April 25, 2011 – Troy, NY – Youth from across the country are embracing the power of digital media to express their voices and create positive change in their lives and their communities. This Saturday April 30th some of the finest young media filmmakers and media makers from across New York State will gather for the Second Annual NY Shout Out, a day of creative and technical workshops and an evening film festival presented by The Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy. The youth workshops will take place from 1pm-5pm and the NY Shout Out Film Festival will run from 7pm-9pm. Admission the festival will be $5-10 suggested donation.
The event, which is co-sponsored by Youth FX, a local digital film program for teens in Albany, will bring over 40 young people together to share ideas, create short videos and screen their finest work from the past year. Some of the groups attending and screening their films will include: The Green Guerillas Youth Media Tech Collective (Ithaca, NY), HarlemLive, a youth produced web magazine, Youth Media Sanctuary (Troy, NY), Youth FX (Albany, NY), Tech Valley High video production students, Millennial Youth (Albany, NY), and Troy High School.
Both Youth FX and the Youth Media Sanctuary, the co-sponsors of this event, are intensive hands-on programs designed to empower and inspire young people in the Capital Region through the acquisition of skills in the emerging field of digital media as while fostering their creativity through the art of visual storytelling. During the past year the youth participants of these projects have engaged in their communities by creating documentary and short fiction films that reflect their understanding and vision of the world around them. Please Note: Youth filmmakers will be available during the day (1pm-5pm) for interviews and further follow up.
