Date(s) - Sunday 11/08/2009
2:00 am - 4:00 am
The Persian-American poet/singer/songwriter Haale will perform at 9 PM on Saturday, November 7, 2009 at The Sanctuary for Independent Media, 3361 Sixth Avenue in Troy. Admission to the all-ages show is $10 (free to patrons of the Indymedia 10th Anniversary Film Festival, which immediately precedes this show). Call (518) 272-2390, email [email protected], or visit www.MediaSanctuary.org for directions and more information.
Drawing on Persian mystical and American folk traditions, Haale weaves engaging lyrics and trance-inducing melodies in a rare solo acoustic set. She will sing new songs as well as songs from her album “No Ceiling,” hailed by the Boston Globe as “one of the most memorable releases of 2008.”
“Haale is… a star on the rise… her raw sound owes as much to ’60s psychedelic rock as it does to the ancient Middle East…” WASHINGTON POST
“[Haale] sings with a supple, blissful Persian flair and the intensity of an arena rocker.” BOSTON GLOBE
Haale (as in halle-lujah or jalepeno), is a Bronx-born woman of Iranian descent whose name means the “halo around the moon.”
She released two mesmerizing EPs in January 2007: “Morning” and “Paratrooper”– and spent the year touring across the country and in Europe, at venues such as the Bonnaroo Festival, SXSW, and the Mimi Festival in France. She performed at David Byrne’s Nonesuch-sponsored series at Carnegie Hall, recorded with Sean Lennon (on “Before the Skies”), and shared the stage with such diverse artists as the legendary Hugh Masekela and Odetta.
On the breathtaking full-length debut, “No Ceiling” Haale explores themes of transformation and evolution, singing in English and Persian through a riveting soundscape of percussion, psychedelic guitars, and soaring strings.
This presentation is made possible by volunteer labor and thousands of small donations from patrons of The Sanctuary For Independent Media. The Sanctuary for Independent Media is a telecommunications production facility dedicated to community media arts located in an historic former church in Troy, NY. The Sanctuary hosts screening, production and performance facilities, training in media production and a meeting space for artists, activists and independent media makers of all kinds.
