SUMMARY:Be The Media! Workshop with Brandon Ballengée: Love Motel for Insects: Nighttime Insect Watching and Arthropod Monitoring
DESCRIPTION:A participatory workshop on biodiversity and “ecosystem activism” designed to train amateurs to assist in art and science research. The Love Motel for Insects was a huge hit with the people that participated as they were able to learn valuable information about bugs and how they interact in nature. Each person got a hand-out with bugs labeled on the paper to determine which one was which and their role in the environment. This workshop created a temporary “Love Motel for Insects” using insect attracting lights and bait to draw in local nocturnal creatures.

On the strength of his talent with an old bucket\, helmet\, and drum\, Konaté performed nightly outside the family’s front door conducting his first band. A guitarist in Khaira Arby’s band\, he is blazing the trail for a new wave of Malian music. Oumar sings about love\, family\, and social responsibility\, punctuated by his searing electric guitar solos and infectious energy.

SUMMARY:Be The Media! Workshop with Brandon Ballengée: Eco-displacements
DESCRIPTION:Environmental activist and visual artist Brandon Ballengée will work with community participants to collect specimens\, this workshop looks at the aquatic life of the Hudson River and surrounding areas. Firstly as a group we will set-up a 20 gallon aquarium with filtration and discuss the water-cycle\, pollution and habitat requirements for aquatic species. We will fill then go to the river to collect artifacts and specimens and displace them into the aquarium. Funded in part by the National Endowment of the Arts “Bio-Art in an Industrial Wasteland.”  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis program involved the creation of a Hudson River Eco-Displacement sculpture. A beautiful aquarium\, with fish from the toxic waters of the Hudson\, was installed at The Sanctuary for Independent Media. The collected found objects from the desolate beach at Ingalls Ave. Boat Launch became creative elements for the Eco-Displacement environment. This art aquarium was created by workshop participants\, including several North Troy neighborhood youth. The project planted the seed for a continued residency with Brandon and the community of Troy for with NEA Art Works support for “Urban Art Reclamations: Our Upper Hudson Heritage.” \n\n\n\nABOUT THE ARTIST: \n\n\n\nBrandon Ballengée (American\, born 1974) is a visual artist\, biologist and environmental activist based in New York. \n\n\n\nBallengée creates transdisciplinary artworks inspired from his ecological field and laboratory research. Since 1996\, a central investigation focus has been the occurrence of developmental deformities and population declines among amphibians. In 2001\, he was nominated for membership into Sigma XI\, the Scientific Research Society. In 2009\, Ballengée and SK Sessions published “Explanation for Missing Limbs in Deformed Amphibians” in the Journal of Experimental Zoology and received international media attention from the BBC and others. This scientific study was the inspiration for the book Malamp: The Occurrence of Deformities in Amphibians (published by Arts Catalyst & Yorkshire Sculpture Park\, UK) and a solo exhibition at the Royal Institution of Great Brittain (London\, England: 2010). Since 2009 he has continued his amphibian research as a visiting scientist at McGill University (Montréal\, Canada). In 2011 he was awarded a conservation leadership fellowship from the National Audubon Society’s TogetherGreen Program (USA). \n\n\n\nHis art has been featured in several major US publications\, including ARTnews\, Art in America\, The New York Times\, New Yorker\, The New York Times Magazine\, Orion\, Audubon Magazine and Sculpture. Internationally\, it was also featured in Beaux Arts (France)\, Liberation (France)\, L’Oeil (France)\, The Observer (England)\, The Guardian (England)\, Financial Times (England)\, BBC News (England)\, D’Ars (Italy)\, Domenica (Italy)\, Il Venerdi (Italy)\, The Sunday Guardian: New Dehli (India) and others.

SUMMARY:Uptown Summer 2014 Week 1: Mapping Our Community
DESCRIPTION:To map our community\, we began “Uptown Summer 14” presenting participatory arts workshops with neighborhood youth. In a “Mapping Our History” Scrapbook/Sampler Workshop with photo journalist Brenda Ann Kenneally\, youth had a photography lesson and took photos of their homes. The next day\, they had a tour to learn the history of their neighborhood with Kathy Sheehan of the Rensselaer County Historical Society\, and began needle-points (in the history of Victorian Troy) of the photos of their homes. Writing about sense of place and identity\, they had a poetry workshop with Cara Benson of the Millay Colony. North Troy youth also worked with new media artists LoVid\, strategizing how to create a walking video tour of their block. They ended the week in investigating how they can be change-makers in their community. In a meeting with the River Keeper\, they took their cameras to witness the effects of pollution in the Hudson River on their community. And\, they worked on urban gardens in abandoned lots\, striving to transform toxic places into green spaces!

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a “Botanical Intervention” at 5 Glen Avenue with Canadian bio-artist Oliver Kellhammer. Kellhammer\, in collaboration with NATURE Lab Project Coordinator Kathy High\, will create a “botanical intervention” in the long devastated toxic soil of the “L-Lot\,” at 5 Glen Ave. between 6th Ave. and River Street in North Troy. One block away from Lock One (Federal Lock) of the Erie Canal\, we’ll map the biology\, history and current identity of a place\, in this creative “Bio-Art in an Industrial Wasteland” workshop. As part of an ongoing collaboration\, artist Oliver Kellhammer (with Kathy High) will embark on an investigation of Troy’s former industrial lands – areas often referred to as brownfields or ruderal ecologies (from the Latin ‘rudus’ meaning ‘ruin’.)

SUMMARY:Uptown Summer 2014 Week 4: Information Architecture
DESCRIPTION:Atif Akin will lead us in a worksop designing and implementing information architecture for Uptown Summer\, spreading the word about environmental justice in North Troy and beyond! Mapping Dialogue: Artist and Poet Cara Benson from the Millay Colony for the Arts from week one of Uptown Summer returned today to work with the ‘Youth Change Makers’ on how to construct a poem that consist of only memories. The youth change Makers spent time walking around the neighborhood mapping places of violence. They interviewed people asking them about their own personal experiences of violence in the neighborhood and they mapped their own personal memories of violence. Assemblyman John McDonald joined us to speak about important issues within the community as we enjoyed discussion about Troy City Council members Erin Sullivan-Teta and Lynn Kopka came to the Sanctuary for lunch and spoke about important topics in a symbiotic discussion about topics regarding our community.

Alex Torres and His Latin Orchestra take the stage at 3:30 PM\, performing their amazing original blend of Afro-Caribbean rhythms including salsa\, merengue\, cha-cha\, bomba\, plena and Latin jazz. At 5 PM\, the band Nation Beat brings on their 21st century mash-up of the thunderous grooves of northeastern Brazil fused with the strolling swagger of New Orleans funk. The celebration continues until sundown.

DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with Una Chaudhuri\, Oliver Kellhammer\, Fritz Ertl and Sarah Rothberg and sound design by Pejik Malinovski\, Dear Climate is a multifaceted project that reimagines the environment with a poetic series of agit-prop posters and meditative audio pieces. Designed to “retool your inner climate\,” this art exhibit beckons the viewer to meet\, befriend\, and become climate change. The work is designed to flex its nimble agitation mediation muscles in a variety of urban and urbane formats\, connecting the politics of climate change with the personal. Dear Climate is a project with many incarnations. Marina Zurkow builds animations and participatory environments that focus on human’s relationship with animals\, plants and the weather. She is on faculty at NYU’s Interactive Technology Program (ITP) and is represented by bitforms gallery. Dear Climate will be on view from 10/5/14-12/20/14\, with an event featuring Kellhammer and Zurkow on 11/12/14.

DESCRIPTION:Sow an ancient grains garden plot with agrarian-activist scarecrows\, create a community seed exchange\, and make media messages to cultivate consciousness! Let’s sow seeds. It is a magical experience. The land will need to be slightly tilled\, turned. We will invite along people who are growing ancient grains to share first-hand their knowledge. Local grain experts\, Howard Stoner\, farmer/researcher\, and Amy Halloran\, writer and grain grower\, will also contribute with the grain planting\, grain husking\, grain milling and pancake making. Also contributing will be farmer and permaculture expert\, Rebekah Rice\, of Nine Mile Farm. The workshop will be a brainstorming session on mapping the local network of actors who contribute to a regional food system. We will also start the beginnings of a seed library. In collaboration with iEAR Presents! and the Department of the Arts at RPI.

DESCRIPTION:A decade after being under heavy federal surveillance for exercising free speech in support of the underground Earth Liberation Front\, Leslie James Pickering discovered that his associates are being questioned by the FBI\, the US Post Office is copying his incoming mail\, he was put on a secret list for maximum security screening at airports and a federal grand jury subpoena was issued for records on him\, his family and his bookstore\, Burning Books.  Leslie has launched an extensive legal and public campaign to resist this surveillance\, which he believes is aimed to repress Burning Books and the surge of activism and awareness that the bookstore generates\, as well as harass and intimidate the radical environmental movement.  This multimedia presentation will open eyes to methods used by the federal government to repress activists and freedom struggles\, and how they can be resisted…
