DESCRIPTION:Jaimeo Brown (pronounced jah-mayo) is emerging as one of the preeminent drummers on the new creative music scene. The percussionist is one of the leaders of a new circle of young New York City musicians grounded in the African-American roots of their music and dedicated to extending it well into the new century. Comfortable in any setting from jazz club to arena concert\, Jaimeo began his drum career at age 16 with his father bassist Dartanyan Brown and mother pianist and woodwind specialist\, Marcia Miget\, and drum teacher\, Sly Randolph\, himself a Bernard Purdie protégé from Harlem. A 2001 cum laude graduate of the vaunted jazz program at William Paterson University\, Jaimeo’s first offer after graduation was to take the drum chair for the Charles Mingus Big Band. While families wait for their turn getting their photo taken\, we’ll have arts activities in the main Sanctuary space. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBe The Media! workshops teach multimedia skills to community members in order to develop urgently needed independent local voices. Our goal is to empower the public through independent media making\, supplying them with the tools to tell their own stories through different mediums of media including video\, radio and journalism.

DESCRIPTION:In the spirit of ideas worth spreading\, TEDx is a program of local\, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event\, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local\, self-organized events are branded TEDx\, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program\, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. “Changing the Way We Eat” is a one-day conference featuring a dynamic and diverse group of speakers addressing issues in the sustainable food and farming movement. There will be breakfast snacks provided and a potluck lunch.

Two decades after his death\, today Chavez remains the most significant Latino leader in US history. His place in history is secure\, but the route he travelled from migrant worker to national icon is shrouded in myth. That path has become well-worn that reality lies half-buried beneath the legends. DESCRIPTION:Great guitars\, lightning-fast rhythms and a rotating cast of vocalists from the capital city of Niger\, West Africa’s largest nation. By the time Tal National reached international acclaim with 2013’s “Kaani\,” the band’s first release outside of Niger\, they had spent more than a decade crisscrossing their native country\, usually on dirt pathways through the Sahara\, playing epic five-hour sets\, seven days a week\, selling their CDs on street corners and roundabouts. In the process\, they became Niger’s most popular band\, with songs constantly blasted on national TV and cell phones everywhere. Following FatCat’s release of “Kaani\,” Western audiences and critics quickly embraced the band’s singular and finely-honed sound. NPR were hit by “the band’s tightness and fiery energy”; The Guardian praised “their full-tilt approach\, and hypnotic intensity”; whilst Songlines wrote of “a rich\, hybrid sound that draws on familiar West African elements to create something rewardingly fresh and different.” FatCat released the dazzling follow-up\, “Zoy Zoy\,” on April 13th.

DESCRIPTION:One of the pioneer production groups when consumer video was first introduced in the late 1960s\, the Videofreex produced several thousand videotapes and multimedia events–training hundreds of video makers in the brand new medium. Over their nine-plus years together\, the Videofreex produced several thousand videotapes\, installations and multimedia events and trained hundreds of video-makers in the brand new video medium.  The first members of the group met at the Woodstock Music Festival in 1969 (taping in a muddy temporary counter culture community).  In 1971 they all relocated to Maple Tree Farm in the Catskill Mountains\, which became one of the earliest media centers.  In early 1972 they launched the first pirate TV station\, Lanesville TV\, using a transmitter given to them by Yippee Abbie Hoffman. DESCRIPTION:In the workshop\, we will be generating the content for and carrying out a fundraising campaign for our new radio station. We will cover basic best practices for running such a campaign – whether it’s on Kickstarter\, Indiegogo\, or in our case\, using our own system independent of the platforms. During our time together\, we will have fun writing several fundraising emails\, facebook posts\, tweets\, and videos. We will even do lots of old-school phone banking\, directly connecting with Sanctuary supporters to try to get the dollars flowing in and the radio station off the ground.
