SUMMARY:Margaret Mead Film & Video Festival's Kathy Brew Presents: "Ryan\," "Nalini by Day\, Nancy by Night\," "Phantom Limb"
DESCRIPTION:Margaret Mead Film and Video Festival co-director Kathy Brew visits The Sanctuary For Independent Media to present a selection of shorts. \n\n\n\nRyan is a 2004 Oscar®-winning animated short by Chris Landreth\, produced by the National Film Board of Canada. It is a biography of Ryan Larkin\, former animator for the NFB. Larkin was in his heyday one of the many genius animators who worked for the NFB; his 1968 animated short Walking was nominated for an Oscar\, losing to Disney cartoon It’s Tough to Be a Bird. However\, addictions to alcohol and cocaine cost him his job with the NFB and eventually left him homeless\, begging for spare change on the streets of Montreal. The short consists of Landreth interviewing Larkin at a Montreal homeless shelter. The short is notable for its deeply odd style of 3-D animation. The people appearing in the short\, namely Larkin\, Landreth\, and some of Larkin’s old acquaintances\, are represented by highly stylized\, mangled versions of themselves\, with pieces missing from each of them as means of representing emotional and artistic trauma. \n\n\n\nNalini by Day\, Nancy by Night (2005) is an insightful documentary by filmmaker Sonali Gulati which explores complex issues of globalization\, capitalism and identity through a witty and personal account of her journey into India’s call centers. Gulati\, herself an Indian immigrant living in the US\, explores the fascinating ramifications of outsourcing telephone service jobs to India—including how native telemarketers take on Western names and accents to take calls from the US\, UK and Australia. A fresh juxtaposition of animation\, archival footage\, live action shots and narrative work highlight the filmmaker’s presence and reveal the performative aspects of her subjects. With fascinating observations on how call centers affect the Indian culture and economy\, Nalini by Day\, Nancy by Night raises important questions about the complicated consequences of globalization. \n\n\n\nPhantom Limb (2005) director Jay Rosenblatt states: “The death of my seven-year-old brother when I was nine remains a painful and haunting memory. My parents did not know how to cope with the loss of their child and the entire family experienced indescribable pain. Phantom Limb uses this personal story as a point of departure. Whether it is a loss through death or divorce\, the stages of grieving are the same. Individuals often go through denial\, anger\, bargaining\, depression and\, ultimately\, some kind of acceptance\, in order to heal. The film is loosely structured according to these stages. Interspersed throughout this poetic documentary are interviews with a cemetery owner\, a phantom limb patient and an author of a book about evidence for life after death. Phantom Limb reminds viewers that while grief is painful and isolating\, it is a reminder to each of us that life is impermanent.”

SUMMARY:Margaret Mead Film & Video Festival: "Bride Kidnapping in Kyrgyzstan\," "Children of the Decree"
DESCRIPTION:Bride Kidnapping in Kyrgyzstan (Petr Lom\, 2005) is the first film to document the custom of bride kidnapping\, an ancient marriage tradition in Kyrgyzstan\, a former Soviet Republic in Central Asia. When a Kyrgyz man decides to marry\, he often abducts the woman he has chosen. Typically\, he and several friends hire a car\, stake out his bride-to-be’s movements\, snatch her off the street\, and take her to the groom’s family home. A delegation is then sent to her family. The abducted woman is held until someone from her family arrives to determine whether they will accept the “proposal” and she will agree to marry her kidnapper. Bride Kidnapping documents in harrowing detail four such abductions\, from the violent seizures on city streets and the tearful protests of the women\, who are physically restrained and persuaded to accept their fate by the women of the groom’s family\, to the often tense negotiations between the respective families\, and either the eventual acquiescence or continued refusal of the young women. \n\n\n\nChildren of the Decree (Florin Iepan\, 2004): “Procreation is the social duty of all fertile women\,” was the political thinking during the 1960s and 1970s in Romania. In 1966\, Ceaucescu issued Decree 770\, in which he forbade abortion for all women unless they were over forty or were already taking care of four children. All forms of contraception were totally banned. The New Romanian Man was born. By 1969\, the country had a million babies more than the previous average. Thousands of kindergartens were built overnight. Romanian society was rapidly changing. By using archival footage and excerpts from old fiction films as well as by interviewing famous persons from that time\, the Iepan revives the period of tremendous oppression. Many deaths were caused by the mere fact that women\, including wives of secret Romanian agents\, famous TV presenters and actresses\, had to undergo illegal abortions. Many women were jailed for having abortions done to them. Some died by using awkward abortion methods\, like injecting mustard or lemon juice into the uterus. Sex life was no fun anymore. Nevertheless\, Romania had a demographic boom and hosted a world conference on population in 1974.

SUMMARY:Margaret Mead Film & Video Festival: "Home\," with Filmmakers Jeffrey Togman and Pierre Defendini
DESCRIPTION:Home (2005) will be presented by director Jeffrey Togman and cinematographer Pierre Defendini. On a gang-controlled\, dead end street\, Sheree Farmer is raising her six children alone. With the help of Mary Abernathy\, a former fashion industry executive turned community activist\, Sheree struggles to buy her first home and escape her violent and drug-infested Newark neighborhood. Home follows these two exceptional women in an intimate story that speaks to the future of America’s cities. The film had its world premiere at the SilverDocs AFI/Discovery Channel Documentary Festival (now AFI Docs)\, where it won a Special Jury Recognition Award. The documentary was an official selection of the Margaret Mead Film Festival. The New York Times called Home a “marvelously revealing documentary about the psychology of poverty.” Jeffrey M. Togman is an American filmmaker and political scientist and a long-time member of the faculty at Seton Hall University\, where he is associate professor of political science and film. Home was co-produced and filmed by Pierre Defendini.

SUMMARY:Margaret Mead Film & Video Festival: "Land Mines: A Love Story"
DESCRIPTION:Dennis O’Rourke’s latest documentary Land Mines: A Love Story (2004) is part observational and part essay – driven by a polemic that is both angry and subtle\, and a damning portrayal of the human costs of war. Land Mines is a compelling anti-war film set in Afghanistan\, a country that has become synonymous with conflict. It is also a story of romance and a celebration of life\, hope and love. The film tells the story of Habiba and Shah. Shah\, a former Mujaheddin soldier and land mine victim\, works as a cobbler on the pavements of the ruined city of Kabul. One day\, he noticed a pretty Tajik girl who had only one leg\, and he began to court her. Amidst the chaos and violence\, and despite all the obstacles of tradition and religion\, Shah and Habiba were able to marry. O’Rourke has received numerous awards for his filmmaking including the Director’s Prize for Extraordinary Achievement at the Sundance Film Festival. His films include the award-winning Cunnamulla and The Good Woman of Bangkok.

SUMMARY:Steve Kurtz of the Critical Arts Ensemble Speaking on “Art and Discipline”
DESCRIPTION:This lecture was built upon the following premises: first\, any action within the cultural landscape performed from a minoritarian position will be perceived by authority as contestational act; and second\, once challenged any or all of a variety of disciplinary agents will be sent to restabilize the discourses of the status quo through the managing or silencing of resistant cultural production. Steve Kurtz is a founding member of Critical Art Ensemble (CAE). CAE is a collective of tactical media practitioners of various specializations\, including computer graphics and web design\, wetware\, film/video\, photography\, text art\, book art\, and performance. Formed in 1987\, CAE’s focus has been on the exploration of the intersections between art\, critical theory\, technology\, and political activism. The collective has performed and produced a wide variety of projects for an international audience at diverse venues ranging from the street\, to the museum\, to the Internet. Critical Art Ensemble has also written five books\, and has just released its sixth work Marching Plague: Germ Warfare and Global Public Health. Kurtz is an Associate Professor of Art at SUNY\, Buffalo.

SUMMARY:"The Trouble With Music" with Author Mat Callahan
DESCRIPTION:Mat Callahan’s The Trouble with Music (2005) explores the crisis facing music. The signs are everywhere\, from the saturation of public space by tuneful trivia to the digital downloading controversy. Quantity has replaced quality. The number of units sold is now the criteria by which music is judged and high-gloss\, mass-produced\, low-content music is everywhere. You can’t shop\, eat\, ride a bus or see a movie without hearing it as each day you are inundated with enticements to buy it. Like the replacement of essential nutriment by junk food\, music lovers are expected to surrender their critical faculties and consume the phony McMusic that can be more effectively controlled and profitably sold than the genuine article. Callahan unravels and elucidates the crises facing music as well as its liberatory potential. \n\n\n\nThe Trouble with Music includes discussions of: technology and its effects on music making and listening; superabundance and the absence of critical thought; the development of radio; music criticism; copyright; the digital domain and the Internet; labor and music making; and the special relationships among words\, dance\, politics and music. A large segment of the general public seeks a relationship to music and an exceptional profit for those who own and control it. Callahan provides a means of evaluating music and a powerful critique of the music industry. Whether you whistle at work\, sing in the shower or conduct concertos\, this book will challenge and enhance how you think about music. Includes introductions by musician and Dischord Records founder\, Ian Mackaye; Rock and Rap Confidential editor\, Dave Marsh; and an afterward by Boff\, from the multimillion selling group Chumbawamba. Mat Callahan has been a composer\, musician\, engineer and producer for 40 years.

SUMMARY:Prometheus Radio Project Presents "The Spectrum Roadshow"
DESCRIPTION:The creation of the Low Power FM radio service stands as one of the greatest successes in recent efforts for grassroots media reform. As a result\, hundreds of new low power community stations are broadcasting that otherwise would not be—operated by civil rights groups\, schools\, farmworker organizations\, environmentalists\, cultural organizations\, and others. Low power radio has allowed nonprofits in the United States to re-imagine and revitalize their relationship with media; and this has set the stage for a dramatic expansion of civil society into the world of radio station operations. The Prometheus Radio Project was founded in 1998 by activists working within social change movements such as housing\, environmentalism\, health care\, anti-war\, and criminal justice reform. The success of these movements was limited by corporations’ ownership and control of media\, who used their power to suppress debate on vital issues. Prometheus continues to support dozens of low power stations with their day-to-day operations. We have helped over a hundred groups to apply for full power radio licenses in the 2007 filing opportunity\, and assisted dozens in the 2010 application window. Over 120 interns and volunteers have worked with Prometheus over the past 10 years\, emerging as community leaders and activists in the fight for participatory media.

SUMMARY:Bread and Puppet Theater Presents: "How to Turn Distress Into Success: A Parable of War and Its Making"
DESCRIPTION:How to Turn Distress into Success: A Parable of War and its Making is a funny\, poignant\, radical\, occasionally violent response to the 9/11 attacks\, filtered through the coolest puppets you’ll ever see. It’s a layered event; a commentary on a puppet administration\, put on by puppet masters who\, more than just about anyone\, know exactly what it means to be anything but.

SUMMARY:"Gone Tomorrow: The Hidden Life of Garbage" with Filmmaker and Author Heather Rogers
DESCRIPTION:Author and filmmaker Heather Rogers will screen her documentary on the political history of rubbish in the United States\, “Gone Tomorrow: The Hidden Life of Garbage” and talk about her new book of the same name. Every day a phantasmagoric rush of spent\, used and broken riches flows through our homes\, offices\, and cars. The U.S. is the planet’s number one producer of garbage\, and over the past 30 years America’s garbage output has doubled. Rogers explains that\, despite popular wisdom\, this torrent of trash is not primarily the responsibility of the individual consumer\, instead it’s the outcome of a free market system that needs waste to maintain high consumption levels. To understand the roots of today’s waste-addicted culture\, Rogers examines the grisly\, oddly fascinating underworld of trash.

SUMMARY:“Amandla! A Revolution in Four-Part Harmony”
DESCRIPTION:Lee Hirsch’s 2002 film Amandla! A Revolution in Four-Part Harmony documents South African musicians\, playwrights\, poets and activists as they recall the struggle against apartheid from the 1940s to the 1990s that stripped black citizens of South Africa of basic human rights\, and the important role that music played in that struggle. The documentary uses a mixture of interviews\, musical performances and historical film footage. Among the South Africans who take part are Miriam Makeba\, Abdullah Ibrahim\, Hugh Masekela\, Vusi Mahlasela and others. The freedom songs heard in the film have an important historical context. Particularly in the United States\, freedom songs have referred to protest songs of the abolitionist\, civil rights\, and labor movements. Yet\, in South Africa\, the songs take on a different meaning\, referring to a unique collection of songs tied to the struggle for racial equality during the 20th century. Stylistically\, freedom songs originated in choir as a unifying and prevalent genre that combined southern African signing traditions with Christian hymns. Most of the songs have simple melodies and are sung a cappella. More importantly\, they are composed and sung in groups\, and often reflect changing political circumstances and attitudes. The film is bookmarked by the exhumation of the remains of Vuyisile Mini\, trade union organizer\, member of the African National Congress\, and composer of “Beware Verwoerd” and other protest songs. Mini was executed by the apartheid regime in 1964.

SUMMARY:"Two Square Miles" with Filmmaker Barbara Ettinger and Friends of Hudson Founder Sam Pratt
DESCRIPTION:Barbara Ettinger’s 2006 documentary Two Square Miles tracks the conflicts in the small town of Hudson\, New York as a proposed multinational coal-fired cement plant threatens to reshape the community. With its thriving main street\, diverse population\, and healthy rate of revitalization\, Hudson\, New York could be seen as a model of small-town America. But underneath the surface\, Hudson is dealing with the same issues that communities of all sizes face: ever-widening income gaps and the loss of a middle class; threats to health and environment by polluting corporations\, gentrification and homogenization; and a compromised democratic process. Local business and small farms find it impossible to compete against national chains\, while long-standing friction persists along racial and economic lines. Two Square Miles takes a closer look at this small community in a state of flux\, a town of 7\,500 located 100 miles north of New York City. How do the residents of this town deal with change — and with each other? Presented by Barbara Ettinger and Sam Pratt\, founder of Friends of Hudson.

SUMMARY:"The Next Industrial Revolution" Screening with Community Potluck
DESCRIPTION:In Chris Bedford’s and Shelley Morhaim’s The Next Industrial Revolution (2001)\, architect Bill McDonough and chemist Michael Braungart bring together ecology and human design. While some environmental observers predict doomsday scenarios in which a rapidly increasing human population is forced to compete for ever scarcer natural resources\, Bill McDonough sees a more exciting and hopeful future. In his vision humanity takes nature itself as our guide reinventing technical enterprises to be as safe and ever-renewing as natural processes. Can’t happen? It’s already happening…at Nike\, at Ford Motor Company\, at Oberlin College\, at Herman Miller Furniture\, and at DesignTex…and it’s part of what architect McDonough and his partner\, chemist Michael Braungart\, call ‘The Next Industrial Revolution.’ Shot in Europe and the United States\, the film explores how businesses are transforming themselves to work with nature and enhance profitability.

SUMMARY:"Aristide and the Endless Revolution" with Filmmaker Nicolas Rossier
DESCRIPTION:While the international community passively looked on\, the democratically elected president of the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere was violently deposed twice. Aristide: and the Endless Revolution (2005) investigates the events in Haiti that led to the second brutal deposition of Jean Bertrand Aristide. The archival footage and interviews soon make it clear that the United States played a key role in this. Former colonizer France also had substantial interests in the developments in Haiti. Shortly before his second deposition\, Aristide demanded that France pay compensation for the damage his country had suffered through French colonial exploitation: $21\,685\,135\,671.48\, to be exact. It was a last desperate move of a president (and former priest) who strove for a dignified form of poverty for his people. Both supporters and opponents of his policy are introduced in this investigative documentary. Director Rossier\, whose Brothers and Others was screened at the 2003 IDFA in the USA Today section\, interviewed people like Noam Chomsky\, the assistant United States Secretary of State Roger Noriega\, actor and UN goodwill ambassador Danny Glover\, and many Haitians. Of course\, Aristide himself also appears. Preceeded by a reception for the Underground Gallery\, featuring an exhibition of Haitian art featuring the work of Haitian artists Azouke Sanon and Jean-Marie Gabriel (which will be on display through the month of May).

SUMMARY:"Inter/Play..." with Pauline Oliveros and Surajit Sarkar
DESCRIPTION:Art blends with politics as experimental music pioneer Pauline Oliveros and media artist Surajit Sarkar join creative forces at The Sanctuary For Independent Media!  \n\n\n\nEven as internet use has grown exponentially\, the hierarchy of metaphors that describe it has remained constant: The internet is most of all a mail pigeon\, then a library\, then an amusement park\, then a shopping center. For the most part\, the online world mirrors the offline world. People bring to the Internet the activities\, interests\, and behaviors that preoccupied them before theWeb existed. But it has also enabled new kinds of activities – and certainly not in the way people are doing them now. Broadband internet engenders a new era of instant connection and interactivity. Here\, the totality of representations exists in virtual proximity. Representation and communication have become one. Does it mean that the Net is the infrastructure of a dynamic new human consciousness powered by associative thought\, of CYBERCEPTION? An emerging human faculty of technologically-augmented cognition and perception? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtist Biographies\n\n\n\nSurajit Sarkar is currently visiting from India as a professor in the Arts Department at Rensselaer. He has worked in professional television in India\, creating weekly programs\, as well as documentary and educational films. He has worked as a video artist for theatre and dance stage productions as well\, and is a founding member of the CatapultArts Caravan\, a travelling video+ arts group who believe that the biggest challenge today is to maintain our sense of selves as we grapple the tidal wave of a national and supra national economy and its allied cultural creations. \n\n\n\nPauline Oliveros is a sound explorer\, improviser and composer. She has involved herself with electronic music since the end of the 1959s and is widely known for her accordion playing with electronics using herExpanded Instrument System (EIS). She also founded Deep ListeningInstitute\, Ltd. in 1985 to encourage others in the practice of DeepListening for creativity and heightened awareness of sound and sounding. Recently with her Deep Listening Band she performed with fourteen Philadelphia musicians during a residency at Trinity Center for Urban Life sponsored by the American Composer’s Forum. She teaches at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the Department of the Arts.

SUMMARY:The Beehive Design Collective Presents "Dismantling Monoculture: Globalization and Resistance in the Americas"
DESCRIPTION:Join the Beehive Collective for a high-energy picture-lecture. According to the The Beehive Collective:  Dismantling Monoculture is an anthology of three educational\, visual narratives that illuminate the connections between colonization\, militarization\, and industrial development in the Americas. To create the graphics\, the Beehive interviewed hundreds of community members about the effects of globalization on their lives. The Bees craft these stories into visual metaphors\, weave them together in a patchwork “quilt\,” and lead audiences through a larger-than-life banner version of the graphic”. The Beehive Collective is an all-volunteer non-profit graphics workshop who’s mission is to cross pollinate the grassroots by creating iconic imagery that can be used as popular education and organizing tools.
