Thomas Mapfumo has been the musical voice of protest in Zimbabwe and all of southern Africa for nearly half a century. Hero of the anti-apartheid movement in Rhodesia\, then exiled from Zimbabwe because of his vocal criticism of government corruption\, the legendary composer\, guitarist and singer Thomas Mapfumo leads one of the world’s most dangerous dance bands- a nine-piece ensemble celebrating the past\, present and future of African music. Easily the most famous singer in his native country\, Mapfumo continues to live in exile from the regime of Robert Mugabe\, and his music is banned at home.

SUMMARY:The Sanctuary's 10th Anniversary Celebration With Fatoumata Diawara
DESCRIPTION:Malian singer Fatoumata Diawara (aka Fatou) was born of Malian parents in the Ivory Coast in 1982. As a child she became a member of her father’s dance troupe and was a popular performer of the wildly flailing didadi dance from Wassoulou\, her ancestral home in western Mali. She made the decision to dedicate herself to her passion\, music. Diawara worked to complete an album’s worth of songs and started recording demos for which she composed and arranged all the titles\, as well as playing guitar\, percussion\, bass and singing lead and harmony vocals. An introduction from Oumou Sangaré resulted in a record deal with World Circuit and the recording of her debut album. Perpetuating Mali’s rich traditions with a spectacular contemporary sound all her own\, Diawara has fought the cultural prejudice faced by women throughout the continent and parental opposition to her artistic ambitions to win success as an actress in film and theater before finding her feet in music\, the medium she was always destined to make her own.

SUMMARY:Super-Secret Brunch With Julian Assange!
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday May 15th\, a portal will open between The Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy and the Ecuadorian Embassy in London. The inimitable Julian Assange\, founder of Wikileaks\, will be piped in from his place of exile to tell participants about the latest and most twisted stories from the bleeding edge of journalism: the exciting business of information liberation in the public interest. This will be the highlight of a brunch experience hosted by the Yes Men. The ingredients will be hand-gathered by Anonymous food-hackers and prepared using secret recipes collected by the Yes Men from notable privacy activists. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAssange’s appearance will be introduced by Mike Bonanno from the Yes Men\, who will also show an exclusive\, never-before-seen film from the time The Yes Men learned from Assange that they were being spied on by a private spy firm called Stratfor – and they were invited inside the wikileaks machine to help with the release five million emails that had been liberated from the firm by Anonymous hackers. \n\n\n\nThe super secret\, VIP brunch preceding the Assange appearance will be a totally unique experience. A year in the making\, the menu will feature free-flowing “Adirondack Champagne” (apple cider fermented with sparkling wine yeast) as well as locally gathered flora and fauna – hunted by Tito Ybarra and members of the Sanctuary board. The menu (which will have plenty for vegetarians) will include many of the foods hidden in plain sight in the woods around us including ramps\, fiddleheads\, wild rice\, duck eggs\, and locally landed striped bass. It will be prepared with traditional methods and musical blessings by Tito Ybarra\, who is coming in from Red Lake Minnesota for this event\, and to participate in the Albany hub for protests against fossil fuels. But for the last 4 years\, comedy has been his focus. Tito has built quite a following in the U.S.A. and Canada via his YouTube channels\, “Tito Comedy” and “The Powwow Friends.” \n\n\n\nTito loves to role play as many different characters in his videos\, which is uncommon in the Native Comedy community. “I enjoy doing stand up comedy and have performed at schools\, conferences\, banquets\, graduations and casinos. The information his organization released earned him strong supporters and powerful enemies. For his efforts\, the internet activist earned the Time magazine “Person of the Year” title in 2010. After arriving at the Ecuadorean Embassy in London in June 2012\, seeking to avoid extradition to Sweden\, Assange was granted political asylum by the Ecuadorean government in August 2012. In these films\, they impersonate entities that they dislike\, a practice that they call “identity correction.” \n\n\n\nThe Yes Men are a culture jamming activist duo and network of supporters. Through actions of tactical media\, the Yes Men primarily aim to raise awareness about what they consider problematic social and political issues. The Yes Men operate under the mission statement that lies can expose truth. They create and maintain fake websites similar to ones they intend to spoof\, which have led to numerous interview\, conference\, and TV talk show invitations. They espouse the belief that corporations and governmental organizations often act in dehumanizing ways toward the public.

SUMMARY:"NUTS!" with Filmmaker Penny Lane
DESCRIPTION:Welcome Penny Lane\, co-founder of The Sanctuary for Independent Media\, as she joins us to celebrate our 10th year anniversary with an in-person presentation of her new documentary NUTS! The Sundance Film Festival sensation\, Lane’s documentary is her good old story about a big fat liar and some goat balls. The film presents an opportunity for viewers to actively wrestle with the ethical and epistemological issues central to the narrative nonfiction form. Because who says smart films have to be boring?  \n\n\n\nCo-sponsored by iEAR Presents! and RPI’s School of Humanities\, Arts\, and Social Sciences. \n\n\n\nAbout the film\n\n\n\nNUTS! is a feature-length documentary directed by Penny Lane about Dr. John Romulus Brinkley\, an eccentric genius who built an empire in Depression-era America with a goat testicle impotence cure and a million-watt radio station. \n\n\n\nUsing animated reenactments\, interviews\, archival footage\, and a hilariously unreliable narrator\, NUTS! traces Brinkley’s rise from poverty and obscurity to the heights of celebrity\, wealth and influence in Depression-era America. \n\n\n\nAlong the way\, he transplants tens of thousands of goat testicles; amasses an enormous fortune; is (sort of) elected Governor of Kansas; builds the world’s most powerful radio station; invents junk mail\, the infomercial\, the sound-truck and Border Radio; hosts some epic parties; and annoys the heck out of the establishment\, until finally his audacious actions force the federal government to create regulations to stop him. How he does it\, and what happens when it all comes crashing down\, is the story of NUTS! \n\n\n\nPenny Lane\n\n\n\nPenny Lane was named one of Filmmaker Magazine’s “25 New Faces of Independent Film” in 2012. Her debut feature-length documentary\, Our Nixon\, world premiered at Rotterdam\, had its North American premiere at SXSW\, won the Ken Burns Award for “Best of the Festival” at Ann Arbor\, and was selected as the Closing Night Film at New Directors/New Films. The film is currently in wide distribution\, and has aired on CNN\, ARTE and many other television outlets worldwide. Penny’s films have also screened at AFI FEST\, Antimatter\, IMPAKT\, Images Festival\, Oberhausen\, FLEX FEST\, Hot Docs\, Full Frame\, Rooftop Films\, MoMA’s Documentary Fortnight and many other venues. \n\n\n\nHer second feature-length documentary\, NUTS!\, world-premiered in competition at Sundance in January 2016 where it won a Special Jury Prize for Editing. \n\n\n\nShe has been awarded grants from Creative Capital\, Cinereach\, TFI Documentary Fund\, Jerome Foundation\, LEF Foundation\, NYSCA\, Experimental Television Center\, IFP and Puffin Foundation. She was named “Most Badass!” at the Iowa City Documentary Film Festival in 2009. \n\n\n\nShe received her MFA in Integrated Electronic Arts at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and her BA in American Culture and Media Studies at Vassar College. She has taught film\, video and new media art at Bard College\, Hampshire College and Williams College. She is currently a professor in the Department of Art and Art History at Colgate University\, where she lives in a very old house and shows movies in her barn when she is not working on her upcoming feature documentary NUTS!. And yes\, Penny Lane is her real name. \n\n\n\nDirector’s Comments\n\n\n\nI started dreaming up a film about John Brinkley in 2009\, after coming across the book Charlatan in my local public library. In conversations with friends I would mention this guy who transplanted goat testicles into men to cure impotence. And a lot of people would ask me\, “Well\, did it work?” \n\n\n\nWell… no\, of course it didn’t. But I began to think about how much people want to believe in miracle cures. The weirder the better\, really. How “one weird trick to melt belly fat” is way better click-bait than “eat less to lose weight.” Who doesn’t sometimes wish the world was more interesting\, more magical\, more colorful than it really is? This is why the highest-rated Animal Planet program of all time was a fake documentary about mermaids. This is why Water Kirn falls for Clark Rockefeller. Why conspiracy theories are so compelling. And why we fall for quack doctors\, time and time again: they sell us a story we want to believe. \n\n\n\nI believe that more than any other single human quality\, it is our love of great stories that makes us so endlessly susceptible to being conned. We believe the stories we want or need to believe\, and we believe anyone who tells them to us. Con men know this. So do politicians\, propagandists\, pitchmen\, cult leaders\, televangelists\, pick up artists and manipulators of all kinds – including documentary filmmakers. \n\n\n\nAnd so\, NUTS! is not a film that allows us to sit back and laugh at the dummies who fell for Brinkley’s bullshit. Instead\, it’s a film that shows we are all those dummies. Unlike Brinkley\, however\, I seduce you\, and then I show you how I did it. Brinkley’s story is not presented as the object of a neutral nonfiction gaze\, but as an opportunity for viewers to actively wrestle with the ethical and epistemological issues central to the narrative nonfiction form. \n\n\n\nAnd since I am on a mission to prove that watching documentary films isn’t just about eating your vegetables\, the viewer is supposed to have fun while they wrestle with this stuff. Ultimately\, NUTS! is still just a good old story about a big fat liar\, some goat balls and a million-watt radio station. Because who says smart films have to be boring?
