DESCRIPTION:Join us for the final celebration of the 2018 Uptown Summer youth employment program and see what we’ve been working on! At 1pm\, architect Cameron Toler will be presenting the NATURE Lab prototypes generated from last week’s community design think tank. Then\, we’ll watch a few short films about the Uptown Summer program and hear the finished radio pieces the youth employees have been laboring over for the past five weeks. The youth were tasked with sharing stories of environmental justice and resilience. Expect to hear them report on topics including gardening\, negligent landlords\, and police brutality. The Uptown Summer ’18 programming has been absolutely packed with diverse guests\, eye-opening workshops\, and hands-on skill-building. We are excited to share what we’ve learned\, discovered\, and created!

SUMMARY:Delgrès
DESCRIPTION:A deep roots trio made up of guitarist and vocalist Pascal Danae\, Rafgee on sousaphone and drummer Baptiste Brondy\, blending French Caribbean and New Orleans’ musical styles for a contemporary Creole blues sound with an African flair. Named for Officer Louis Delgrès\, the band pays tribute to the forgotten hero\, a biracial man who spent his life actively resisting colonial forces in Guadeloupe and died in battle fighting Napoleon’s enforced reinstatement of slavery in 1802. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe trio was founded by award winning Guadelupean composer and musician Pascal Danae who was inspired by  New Orleans jazz fusion\, and brought together drummer Baptiste (with whom he had played previously in the band Rivière Noire) and experienced jazz horn player Raphael ‘Rafgee’ Gouthière\, on a whim\, to produce a critically acclaimed\, radical roots group. The group sings mainly in Creole\, with dance worthy tracks that encourage pause and reflection. Their debut album Mo Jodi was released in 2018\, and can be purchased here.

DESCRIPTION:The eighth consecutive year of this community celebration\, with free music\, food and arts activities outdoors at Freedom Square. Just as farmers reap the harvest\, providing sustenance for all\, it is time to celebrate all our harvests–the results of seeds sown through art\, education\, agriculture\, tolerance\, and everything we do to build strong\, healthy\, tolerant communities. Expect fun\, Caribbean-inspired tunes from Rootbrew on the Freedom Square stage. DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Opening Wednesday\, Sept. 26\, 6-7pm\, with photographer Catherine Rafferty! \n\n\n\nDuring her internship at The Sanctuary for Independent Media\, Catherine Rafferty photographed the images in this exhibition during the Uptown Summer 2018 program. Born in Albany\, she is working toward a BFA in Photojournalism at Rochester Institute of Technology. She is currently the photography editor for Reporter Magazine at RIT. Catherine’s interests are in telling stories of environmental justice\, gentrification\, immigration and health care. Her focus is on understanding communities and social relationships. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom monitoring eel populations in the Poestenkill\, to painting “poetic crosswalks\,” to leading a community design process\, the eighth season of Uptown Summer was filled with remarkable projects and exciting workshops. In partnership with the Rensselaer County Summer Youth Employment and NYS Department of Environmental Conservation Environmental Justice programs\, the Sanctuary offered local teens a chance to learn hands-on skills while enriching their community. These experiences are captured in this extensive photo collection now on display in our Underground Gallery.  \n\n\n\nThe youth in these photos focused sharing stories of environmental justice and resilience. Working alongside scientists\, artists\, and community leaders\, they explored diverse realms including data analysis\, seed-saving\, and the health of Hudson River fish. The 2018 Uptown Summer crew left their mark on the neighborhood with the new NATURE Lab Environmental Education Center. With the help of the Troy Architecture Project\, we’ll be transforming a long-abandoned building in North Troy into a grassroots science resource for the neighborhood. Design ideas generated by the Uptown Summer youth employees and other community members will provide the framework for the project as it moves forward. The building and gardens will house workshop and meeting spaces\, a science lab\,  a community kitchen\, and much more! \n\n\n\nCatherine was a team member of a small army of interns who contributed their support this summer\, from Rochester Institute of Technology\, Concordia University\, Skidmore College\, the University at Albany\, Sage College\, and Rensselaer. DESCRIPTION:Working with simple DIY tools and protocols\, participants will learn to extract and identify estrogenic compounds in liquids ranging from waterways to common foods. We will construct our own scientific tools using readily available components that we will use to collect estrogenic compounds from the water and liquids around us. \n\n\n\nThrough this workshop\, participants will learn about the complex interrelationships between industrial agriculture and production\, food systems\, ecosystems\, human bodies and the bodies of organisms that live in affected regions. The workshop will illuminate how our bodies are not our own\, and whether there is emancipatory potential in subversively using industrial waste products. Funded by Vollmer Fries/HASS/RPI. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nBio: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nByron Rich is an artist\, professor\, and lecturer born in Calgary\, Alberta\, Canada. His work exploring speculative design\, biology futures\, and tactical media ecology has been widely shown and spoken about internationally. He was the recent recipient of an Honorary Mention from Ars Electronica (2017)\, and runner-up at the Bio-Art & Design Awards in 2016. He pursued a BFA in New-Media from The University of Calgary before finding himself in Buffalo\, New York where he received an MFA in Emerging Practices at The University at Buffalo. He now teaches Electronic Art & Intermedia at Allegheny College in Meadville\, Pennsylvania. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpecial thanks to prof. Kathy High\, from RPI’s Humanities Arts and Social Science department\, for her collaboration with the Sanctuary for Independent Media on this workshop though her Biopunk class which is part of the NEA funded Bioart Futures and (Forgotten) Urban Ecologies: a series of artist Residencies/workshops presenting contemporary art working with living systems\, sustainable practices\, and using biological techniques and materials. Biopunk is an upper level art and science seminar combining lectures\, critical readings\, hands-on workshops and diy methodologies that teaches the language\, aesthetics and techniques of working with biological materials. Emphasis will be on acquisition of a working knowledge of the history and contemporary investigations of the microbiome and how to culturally explore these scenarios of living amongst multiple diverse communities and species. Influenced by the “punk” era and the beginnings of punk resistance\, as well as the biohacker community\, emphasis will also be placed on developing critical and transgressive thought around ethical issues and cross-disciplinary experimentation in art – such as art/science collaborations\, art as research.

I worked with microalgae\, installed as a mobile or on a split object\, with airborne microorganisms -growing over a 10-foot specific fabric\, floating\, –  or with micro propagated cultures of genetically modified plants\, plastic\, found phones etc\, to create a man-made man. My works are a reflection about the world we construct around us to “protect” us\, the man-made nature we try to impose to the other organisms\, and to ourselves\, our fears of any organisms – specially the smallest and invisible ones- we cannot dominate or control\, but that are intimately in us. \n\n\n\nBorn in France and living in Montreal\, Canada\, I am affiliated to Milieux\, the Institute for Arts Culture and Technology at Concordia University\, in the Lab Cluster. Their mediums are poetic visibility\, feeling-perception\, and the simple acts of everyday life in an effort to regenerate and repair disturbed ecologies. Their work has been supported by the National Endowment for the Arts\, Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts\, Center for Land Use Interpretation\, New York Foundation for the Arts\, New York State Council on the Arts\, Andrew W. DESCRIPTION:The Sanctuary for Independent Media welcomes acclaimed South African artist Vusi Mahlasela back to the Capital Region with his full band for a concert at The Egg in Albany to benefit WOOC 105.3 FM. \n\n\n\nKnown simply as “The Voice” in his home country of South Africa\, singer\, songwriter\, guitarist\, and poet Vusi Mahlasela and his band will perform “Township”–an uplifting special tribute to the music of Miriam Makeba\, Hugh Masekela\, Dorothy Masuka\, and Brenda Fassie–and celebrating the 100th birthday of global peacemaker Nelson Mandela and nearly 25 years of freedom from apartheid. \n\n\n\nPresented by The Egg in cooperation with The Sanctuary for Independent Media as a fundraising concert for radio station WOOC.
