SUMMARY:Stockbridge-Munsee Sacred Stories & Song
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a family-friendly event of stories\, songs\, and games with Stockbridge-Munsee sharer of knowkedge Shawn Stevens\, Flying Deer Nature and Stockbridge-Munsee youth from Bowler\, WI. \n\n\n\n\n10-11 Shawn Stevens sacred stories and song\n\n\n\n11-12 Activities\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMessages to the Ancestors and the Future\, with Shawn Stevens\n\n\n\nGames for all ages\, with Flying Deer Nature Center\n\n\n\n\n\nStone bead-making \n\n\n\nCordage from plant fibers\, with Stockbridge Munsee youth mentors\n\n\n\n\n\nHerbal healing balms for takeaway & tour of Collard City Growers garden herbs\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFacilitators and Participating Organizations: \n\n\n\nShawn Stevens (Red Eagle) is an enrolled member of the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans. He lives among his people\, who are originally from the Hudson Valley\, New York\, but now reside in Bowler\, Wisconsin. A spiritualist\, musician\, artist\, historian\, and sharer of knowledge\, Shawn has been fulfilling his path journey for the past few decades by doing a variety of sharing in his people’s ancestral lands as well as the Midwest. \n\n\n\nShawn describes himself as a “Helper” not only to his people but to all. He explains that his spiritual path is to share the many things given to him for spiritual direction and purpose. He does not have\, nor will accept\, any titles such as “Medicine Man” or “Shaman.” Shawn is also a traditional Native American storyteller\, drummer\, dancer\, singer\, and flute player. He is an ordained minister of the Universal Church of Light and a certified facilitator of White Bison’s Mending Broken Hearts. \n\n\n\nShawn has been fulfilling his path journey for the past few decades by doing a variety of sharing in his peoples ancestral lands as well as the Midwest. Shawn describes himself as a “Helper” to not only his people\, but to all of the Creator’s children. He explains that his Spiritual path is to share the many things given to him for direction and purpose. \n\n\n\n\nFlying Deer Nature Center (FDNC) is a nonprofit wilderness school and community dedicated to mentoring children\, youth\, adults\, and families in deep connection to nature\, self\, and others.\n\n\n\nOur work aims not only to teach naturalist practices and wilderness survival skills\, but also to foster in participants a lifelong relationship with nature and access to the gifts it brings: resilience\, creativity\, and the ability to listen deeply to ourselves and to others. We all need the benefits of connecting with the natural world and\, in like measure\, nature needs our care. This deep and reciprocal relationship with the earth is at the heart of our mission.  \n\n\n\n\nStockbridge-Munsee Youth \n\n\n\n\nEleven Stockbridge-Munsee youth have journeyed from their homes on the Reservation in Bowler\, Wisconsin\, for a week of natural wonders with Flying Deer Nature Center’s summer camp. They complete their visit to the Northeast to discover and walk on the land of their ancestors: Freedom Square is located on settler lands of the village of Unawhat’s Castle\, where they will share with Shawn Stevens in songs\, games and Native education. After this public event\, the youth will have a radio workshop and boat rides on the Mahicanituck (Hudson River)\, who lived in harmony with nature for thousands of years\, before being forcibly removed from their ancestral lands. \n\n\n\n\nSanctuary Eco-Art Trail project: \n\n\n\n\nThe Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail is dedicated to celebrating the sacred Mohican soils we are honored to tend. We are beneficiaries of millennia of human history unfolding in a majestic river valley\, where the land has been nurtured by Indigenous hands and traumatized through industrial development and systemic inequity. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe Stockbridge-Munsee Tribe are in partnership on this project\, which features Stockbridge-Munsee as well as other Indigenous artists and musicians\, historians and storytellers\, eco-artists\, and muralists\, connecting Indigenous wisdom to visions for a future of healing and reparations. \n\n\n\n\n\n“We understand that one goal of the Eco-Art Trail is to continue to bring our stories to life. Embedding our history and culture into a publicly accessible and self-guided trail will make it possible for our words and ways of being to connect with a wider audience.“ \nShannon Halsey\, Tribal President\, Stockbridge-Munsee Community Band of Mohican Indians\n\n\n\n\nLearn more about about Stockbridge-Munsee Community Band of Mohicans and their stories of Origin and History. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail’s urban nature walk on 6th Avenue weaves a journey from Glen St. to 101st St and Freedom Square. Check out our developing schedule of events ranging from summer ’23 through spring ’24 here. \n\n\n\n\nThe Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Our Town creative placemaking program\, which supports activities that integrate arts\, culture\, and design into local efforts that strengthen communities over the long term. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWith an earlier NEA Our Town grant\, the Sanctuary collaborated with community to build the Freedom Square Art Stage. A decade later\, NEA Our Town supports “Sanctuary Eco Art Trail\,” as the space welcomes Stockbridge Munsee sharers of knowledge young and old.

SUMMARY:DE-FENCE Part 1: Medicine in the Margins
DESCRIPTION:Join us at NATURE Lab for a multi-sensory drawing and plant-sensing workshop with artist Margaretha Haughwout. We will discover medicinal plants growing in the marginal spaces and edge conditions of the neighborhood\, discuss neighborhood environmental health conditions\, explore practices connected to territorial defense\, and sketch medicinal plants that have historically been used for the immune system. Participants will be given specially designed field notebooks where they can make observational notes and draw the medicinal plants they resonate with. With participants’ consent\, the creative results of this workshop will be repurposed and made a part of the permanent\, living DE-FENCE installation. This is Part 1 in the De-Fence series. \n\n\n\nLocation: NATURE Lab courtyard at 3319 6th Ave. Meet at the back gate. \n\n\n\nMediaSanctuary · A Multi-Sensorial Drawing and Plant-Sensing Workshop\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMargaretha Haughwout works with humans\, and the more-than-human\, across technologies and ecologies\, to cultivate a radical imagination that challenges proprietary regimes\, colonial temporalities\, and capitalist forms of labor. Her work manifests as speculative fabulation\, intervention\, participatory event\, walking tour\, experimental pedagogy\, installation\, and biological processes. Haughwout’s active collaborations include the Coven Intelligence Program\, with efrén cruz cortés\, the Guerrilla Grafters\, and Ruderal Witchcraft with Oliver Kellhammer. She created and maintains the Food Forest Studio in Central New York. \n\n\n\nHaughwout’s personal and collaborative artwork is exhibited nationally and internationally\, most recently\, at Stadwerkstatt in Linz\, Austria\, the Pixelache Festival in Helsinki\, Finland\, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco\, California\, and at Bennington College in Bennington\, Vermont. Haughwout received her MFA from the University of California Santa Cruz. She is Associate Professor of Emerging Media at Colgate University. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is a collaboration between the iEAR Presents series with support from RPI’s ARTS department and School of Humanities\, Arts and Social Science\, and from the New York State Council for the Arts/ NYSCA\, with The Sanctuary for Independent Media\, and from NEA Our Town “Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail” creative placemaking grant. \n\n\n\nDE-FENCE Project \n\n\n\nDE-FENCE is a living installation and a series of community events at NATURE Lab under the umbrella of the Sanctuary’s growing Eco-Art Trail. The living installation is built in relationship to NATURE Lab’s back fence and the other emerging food forest networks and sign systems in the newly inaugurated space. DE-FENCE is an offering of perennial medicinal plants that support the immune system of humans while also enabling mutual support of the plants themselves and their critter companions through nutrient\, structure\, and insect attraction/ repulsion. The planting design and labeling system emerges out of community conversations and observation processes with the artist. DE-FENCE conflates collective health with territorial defense in opposition to medical and legal conceptions of immunity that derive from notions of private property.

SUMMARY:Creative Place-Making on the Hudson: La Retoire "Sediments" Canoe Journey + Lewis Pugh Swim
DESCRIPTION:Where: Ingalls Avenue Boat Launch\, 1 Ingalls Avenue\, Troy\, NY \n\n\n\nJoin the Sanctuary and Riverkeeper at Ingalls Avenue Boat Launch in North Troy to celebrate creative engagement with the Hudson River. \n\n\n\nLe Ratoire is creating a film project entitled “Sediments”. On September 2nd\, join us at 11:00-11:30 am as they depart from the Ingalls Avenue boat launch in North Troy with their canoes to travel south along the Hudson River to New York City. The artists will be traveling by canoe and will use foraged plants to process the film documentation of their trip. Le Ratoire will return in 2024 to lead a plant-based filmmaking workshop with us. Come celebrate the beginning of their river-based creative place-making journey! \n\n\n\n12:00 pm August 31st \n\n\n\nThe Lewis Pugh Foundation will join us on 8/31 at noon for a press event marking Pugh’s Hudson River Swim as he passes through the Capital Region. Members of the Sanctuary’s Water Justice Lab\, NATURE Lab\, and Eco-Art Trail projects are excited to commemorate this river-based journey! \n\n\n\nMore about the two projects: \n\n\n\nOn August 13 2023\, Lewis Pugh began his 315-mile (507-km) swim down the Hudson River\, from its source to its end at New York City. He is doing this to highlight the critical role rivers play in a habitable planet. Lewis will explore the interconnectedness of rivers and oceans\, and stress the urgent need to restore\, protect and respect them. “If we want healthy oceans we also need healthy rivers — it’s that simple.” \n\n\n\nThe end of the swim will coincide with the UN General Assembly Week\, Climate Week NYC 2023\, and the UN Secretary General’s Climate Ambition Summit. Learn more on the Lewis Pugh Foundation website. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLe Ratoire is a filmmaking collective composed of Léa Lanoë\, Pierre Borel (Labo L’argent\,Marseille\, France)\, Katherine Bauer\, Joyce Lainé\, and Loïc Verdillon (Atelier MTK\, Grenoble\, France). Since 2019\, they have elaborated a methodology for collective filmmaking wherein each film is defined by a particular set of parameters; both technical and\, especially\, situational. Sometimes referring to their practice as “action-filming”\, the members of le Ratoire meet to create all aspects and stages of the film in a single go\, from filming\, processing\, and printing to the final edit. The name “Le Ratoire” refers to the verb in french\, rater\, that means “to miss\, fail\, or flunk” and laboratoire\, indicating the analog hand-made laboratory practices that each film is made with. \n\n\n\n“Sediments” is a film conversation of “The River that flows both ways” or Muhheakantuck in Machican (The Hudson River) made from the water and plants with those who live along her shores. They will canoe down the river’s tidal estuary from the Federal Dam in Troy to the mouth of the ocean in NYC. This portion is a unique body of brackish waters with four tides per day\, influenced by the ocean. They plan their travels to go with the ebb and flow. Camping along her shores for roughly 3 weeks and filming in 16mm\, they will process during the journey with a non-toxic developer made only with plants\, wood ash\, and sea salt. They will also record sounds and conduct interviews with local people\, and give free workshops and screenings along the river. They will harvest the commonly referred to invasive plants\, as they are too plentiful and choking out other plant diversity. This can also raise awareness about the different plants existing along the river. They hope that these interactions create a two-way flowing dialogue about life along the river; the flora and fauna as well as the inhabitants of towns\, estates and industries; their buildings both abandoned and active. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe process of making a film about the first industrialized river of the United States needs to be a conversation and collaboration with its inhabitants\, exploring what it is today and what it carries from the past. They will be using 16mm film (produced in New York\, by Kodak) which emerged from the Industrial Revolution using by-products of the industries; steel\, coal and cattle; but they are also moving in the opposite direction by processing with only non-industrial products and moving slowly with our own bodies as power. The public events they host will help all of us engage in the river in a new way. “As more people play in or near our waterways\, public concern and awareness grow\, leading to increased community advocacy.” declares Riverkeeper in their campaigns on how to help the Hudson River.1 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is a collaboration between the iEAR Presents series with support from RPI’s ARTS department and School of Humanities\, Arts and Social Science\, and from the New York State Council for the Arts/ NYSCA\, with The Sanctuary for Independent Media\, and from NEA Our Town “Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail” creative placemaking grant. \n\n\n\nIn 2024 NATURE Lab will invite La Ratoire return to screen “Sediments” along with their other films. They will also teach a “Plant Processing Workshop”. In this plant processing workshop students will learn how to make a plant- based developer that will develop black and white 16mm film (also works to process 35mm film\, still or moving images\, or any film emulsion\, including photo paper emulsion). This workshop will cover the material history and ingredients of celluloid\, what happens during exposure and development\, how industrial chemicals were developed over plant based ones and why. Then\, we will learn the ingredients in plant developers that can create the same results as the industrially produced ones. We will learn about how to harvest\, when to harvest\, and the preparation of the tea/extraction in order to achieve the desired results\, as well as how to embrace the nature of chance and the destandardization of development. Plant developers are not trying to just mimic their industrial counterparts but are their own wild selves. \n\n\n\nBiographies of Le Ratoire Members\n\n\n\nKatherine Bauer manipulates celluloid film and the cinematic apparatus encompassingthe practices of moving and still image\, installation and live performance. Bauer invokesmythologies and folklore as told through the means of obsolete technologies fusing them with mineral and vegital communications. She is represented by Microscope Gallery (New York). Her work has been exhibited and screened at; Hybris Festival (Brazil)\, The Pompidou Center (France)\, Lausanne Underground Film Festival (Switzerland)\, Estudio Teorema (Mexico)\, Shoot the Lobster (Germany); Anthology Film Archives\, The Knockdown Center\, The Museum of the Moving Image (New York) among others. Bauer received a NYSCA Individual Artist Grant (2023)\, ESP TV Unit 11 residency (2017)\, Handmade Film Institute research grant (2016)\, a Cité Internationale des Arts Paris Residency (2012-13)\, and a Carla Bruni-Sarkozy Foundation Fellowship (2012-13). She holds a BA in Film Arts from Bard College and a MFA from NYU Steinhardt in Studio Art. She is on the Board of Directors for The Film-Makers Cooperative of New York and a member of the film collectives Optipus (NY)\, Le Ratoire\, and Atelier MTK (France). She also studied herbalism and worked on various medicinal gardens throughout her life. In the Hudson Valley\, NY she worked for Good Fight Herb Company\, Common Hands Farm\, and The Abode. She currently lives and works between New York and France.  \n\n\n\nPierre Borel is a saxophonist\, composer and filmmaker\, working in the field of improvised and experimental music and experimental cinema. From 2006 to 2017 he was residing in Berlin taking part of the high flow of ongoing creativity that is centered there. He has performed in most European countries\, Japan\, Russia and USA and is a regular playmate of Joel Grip\, Hannes Lingens\, Sven-Are Johansson\, Christian Lillinger\, Axel Dörner\, Tobias Delius to name a few. He obtained a master degree at the Jazz Institute in Berlin in 2008\, and continues questioning sound and composition through his studies in electro-acoustic music in Marseille. Together with Florian Bergmann and Hannes Lingens\, he was running the Umlaut Berlin collective that in recent years released a great number of records and organized four festivals of improvised music. He moved to Marseille in 2017\, and co-founded LaboLargent\, an artists run organization for experimental filmmakers. \n\n\n\nAfter studying history of art and literature in Paris (Université Paris-Diderot) and Berlin (TU)\, Léa Lanoë studied at Ecole National Superieur dʼArt in Bourges\, working on sound installations and collages. Between 2013 and 2017\, she lived in Berlin\, performed in the group Vermulscht\, and focused more on experimental filmmaking. In her work\, she often collaborates with musicians. In 2017\, she takes part in the Master degree of Documentary filmmaking in Lussas\, France\, where she makes her firstdocumentary film Nul Nʼest Censé\, screened in Les États Généraux du film documentaire\, Lussas\, Le Festival du Court Métrage de Clermont- Ferrand\, Festival les inattendus\, Lyon\, 2019. She now lives in Marseille\, where she created with Pierre Borel and other filmmakers LʼArgent\, an artists run laboratory for Analog filmmaking\, and works more and more with 16mm. \n\n\n\nLoïc Verdillon is a musician\, performer\, and printmaker. Between 2012 and 2019 he composed music for theater pieces by the company “mais ou l’as-tu.” Since 2010\, he’s been an active participant of the musical and cinematographic program at Le 102 in Grenoble\, France. Currently\, his research is focused on sound\, its materiality and forms. He built “yotta-phone\,” a performance for multiple megaphones\, played at different festivals in the summer of 2015. His graphic works focus on the sound shapes of Ernest Chladni in experimental engraving. In 2015\, he combined plastic and audio art for theinstallation of an “attraction park” made up of dissected loudspeakers\, working with the primitive elements of copper\, paper\, and magnets. Since 2016\, he has run and worked at Atelier MTK Independent Cinema Laboratory in Grenoble\, France. He has presented Expanded Cinema performances and organized 16mm workshops around the world\, in such places as Norway\, Italy\, Switzerland\, Germany\, France\, Czech Republic\, Belgium\, and Indonesia.  \n\n\n\nAlongside studies in physics and comparative literature\, Joyce Lainé (aka Lucrecia) begins making films through the encounters with people & visions from the NYC film scene (Anthology Film Archives\, Microscope Gallery\, and Christine Choy). She moves to Grenoble\, France and becomes involved in programming at the 102\, an alternative venue for experimental film\, music and collective organizations. She also joins Atelier MTK and after participating in a research seminar seeking to fabricate the 1903 autochrome color photography process on film\, creates a collective performance called “Fecula est-tu là?” (2017) with Clovis LeMaireCardoen\, Loic Verdillon\, and Etienne Caire. Her first personal film made in France was “40 active warheads” (2016)\, an adaptation of a poem by Daniel Owens\, mixing found and personal footage. Recent works include performances with the Un Ensemble\, Etienne Caire\, Pavel Viry\, and the films within the collective called “Le Ratoire.” Today she continues to work at Atelier MTK.

SUMMARY:StoryHarvest with Stockbridge-Munsee Musician Bill Miller
DESCRIPTION:Join us for StoryHarvest–– a festival to celebrate the harvest with music\, food\, and community! Corn will be a source of food\, games\, crafts\, and jokes in this family-friendly celebration with three-time Grammy award winning musician Bill Miller of the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans sharing music and stories on his ancestral homeland at Freedom Square. \n\n\n\nActivities will include corn arts & crafts\, face painting\, and a bicycle-powered mill. Come and play corn hole\, eat corn\, and participate in the CORNy joke open mic. There will also be community resource tables\, tours to the Medicine Garden\, and listening sessions with Lisa Schonberg at her The Insects are Present listening performance. \n\n\n\nThis is a rain or shine event! Rain location: The Sanctuary main space\, 3361 6th Avenue\, Troy\, 12180 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOne of our key annual food justice celebrations is “StoryHarvest: From Seed to Table\,” encouraging diverse members of the community to celebrate and connect through music and stories of food. Initiated back in 2012 by food artist Ellie Markovitch\, we invite you to celebrate with us after a three-year hiatus! A KitchenSanctuary workshop ahead of the workshop with Ellie Markovitch\, Amy Halloran\, and Azuré Keahi will provide food for the festival and context around the importance of corn\, one of the few grains native to the Americas\, in Indigenous food and culture. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBill Miller is an award-winning Native American recording artist\, performer\, songwriter\, activist\, painter\, and world-class native flute player. Over the entirety\, Miller has produced over a dozen albums\, received three GRAMMY® Awards\, numerous Native American Music Awards & Association (NAMA) awards (including a “Lifetime Achievement” Award) and led Wisconsin’s La Crosse Symphony Orchestra. Overcoming the hardships felt by the global community in 2020 during the COVID-19 Pandemic\, 2021 finds the living legend living life— stronger with a renewed focus on healing through song\, art\, and speaking — as he prepares to release a fresh EP. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is part of the Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail project\, funded by a National Endowment for the Arts Our Town creative placemaking grant\, connecting Indigenous legacy to an urban nature walk on 6th Avenue. The Eco-Art Trail weaves a journey from Freedom Square on 101st St south to our newest community platform\, NATURE Lab (with Citizen Science Laboratory and People’s Health Sanctuary) and on our growing permaculture forest reaching south to Glen St. \n\n\n\nThe Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail is dedicated to celebrating the sacred Mohican soils we are honored to tend. We are beneficiaries of millennia of human history unfolding in a majestic river valley\, where the land has been nurtured by Indigenous hands and traumatized through industrial development and systemic inequity. Embedding art\, ancestral history\, culture and local and Indigenous artist presentations\, the trail engages our rich local ecology and the struggle for environmental justice\, while offering settler communities insight into the history and living legacy of Indigenous peoples on these lands. \n\n\n\nThe Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail is located on a block-wide environmental campus in North Central Troy\, near the Northern tip of the Mahicannituck (Hudson) River Estuary—just a few hundred feet from Federal Lock One of the Erie Canal. Part of the river’s historic flood plain and home to significant Mohican cultural sites\, this neighborhood is also one of the poorest in New York State\, with a long history of disinvestment and environmental contamination. The Eco-Art Trail acknowledges these layered histories as we dream and build towards restored biocultural diversity and robust Indigenous futures. \n\n\n\nSubject to change\, last updated in June 2023: Check out our developing schedule of events ranging from summer ’23 through spring ’24.

SUMMARY:Wheelchair Procession Along Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail
DESCRIPTION:Join Petra Kuppers on a literal journey\, as we will walk the Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail and engage in a number of easy 7-minute improvised dances together. Our dances might develop from touching a leaf or from letting fingertips rest on the soil. \n\n\n\n\n 5PM – 6PM: Wheelchair Procession along Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail with Petra Kuppers & diverse disability networks (we will start from the Sanctuary @ 3361 6th Ave. and journey to Freedom Square at the intersection of 6th Ave & 101st St.)\n\n\n\n6PM -7 PM: Community meal\n\n\n\n7PM – 9PM: Petra Kuppers’ Dream Performance & Workshop (3361 6th Ave\, Troy\, NY 12181)\n\n\n\n\nWe welcome people of all abilities! \n\n\n\nA co-production of iEAR Presents\, sponsored by The Department of the Arts and the School of Humanities Arts and Social Sciences\, and the New York State Council on the Arts. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER\n\n\n\nVolunteer Application\n\n\n\n\nMediaSanctuary · Petra Kuppers: Disability Culture Activist and a Community Performance Artist\n\n\n\nSCROLL DOWN FOR THE TRANSCRIPTION OF THIS INTERVIEW \n\n\n\n\n\nADDITIONAL INFO: In these two sessions\, Petra will take participants on journeys: in the first at 5pm\, on a literal journey\, as we will walk the trail and engage in a number of easy 7-minute improvised dances together. We will then gather together and share a community meal in the Sanctuary. \n\n\n\nIn the second session\, Dream Performance and Workshop at 7pm in the Sanctuary\, Petra will use the inspiration from the trail procession to improvise a movement meditation that connects us to the land and its histories and futures. You can engage this meditation in stillness\, lying on the floor or sitting in a chair\, or you can dance freely in space – your choice. Bring comfy clothes\, and maybe a blanket. If accessible to you\, also bring writing or drawing material\, so we can have a harvesting session after the dream journey\, for you to chronicle your experience. \n\n\n\nThis workshop is a development from Petra’s Starship Somatics classes – a modality she developed during the lockdown of COVID. Starship Somatics engage our bodymindspirits as portals\, as trance-mobiles that honor pasts and jet us toward speculative futures\, among the stars or deep into the earth\, in flux and transformation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is preceded by a presentation by Kuppers on October 11 at EMPAC. Kuppers’s Troy engagement is a collaboration with EMPAC and iEAR Presents! and is made possible in part by New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. Co-sponsored with Deep Listening/ ISATMA (Assistive Technologies for Music and Art Symposium) Conference; the Independent Living Center of the Hudson Valley; NATURE Lab/ People’s Health Sanctuary.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPetra Kuppers (she/her) is a disability culture activist and a community performance artist. Petra grounds herself in disability culture methods\, and uses somatics\, performance\, and speculative writing to engage audiences toward more socially just and enjoyable futures. Her latest academic study is Eco Soma: Pain and Joy in Speculative Performance Encounters (University of Minnesota Press\, 2022\, open access). Her third performance poetry collection\, Gut Botany (Wayne State University Press\, 2020)\, was named one of the top ten US poetry books of 2020 by the New York Public Library\, and won the 2022 Creative Book Award by the Association for the Study of Literature and Environment. In 2022\, she was named a Dance/USA Fellow\, and in 2023\, she won a Guggenheim Fellowship. Petra is Artistic Director of The Olimpias\, an international disability culture collective\, and she co-creates Turtle Disco\, a somatic writing studio\, with Stephanie Heit. She is the Anita Gonzalez Collegiate Professor of Performance Studies and Disability Culture at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. www.petrakuppers.com \n\n\n\n\n\nTranscription of Radio interview:\n\n\n\nSina Basila Hickey: Petra Kuppers is a disability culture activist and a community performance artist who is coming to Troy for two events. First\, she will give an artist lecture at EMPAC on October 11\, and then on October 12\, she will come to the Sanctuary to connect with the community. Petra Kuppers joins me now. Welcome to Hudson Mohawk Magazine. \n\n\n\nPetra Kuppers: Thank you so much for having me\, Sina. It’s lovely to be here and lovely to have you pronounce my name in a real German way. I adore that. I take all kinds of pronunciations of my names\, but this is lovely to hear. \n\n\n\nSina Basila Hickey: Wonderful. It’s so great to talk to you. That one sentence barely does you justice. So\, could you please introduce yourself to our listeners? \n\n\n\nPetra Kuppers: Yes. Hello there. So\, I am a German person who lives right now in Michigan on Three Fires Confederacy land in a little rust belt town called Ypsilanti. And I am indeed a disability culture activist and I am a community performance artist. These are my two core identities. So I work with other people in the disability community. I myself am disabled. I’m also a CIS\, queer\, White woman\, and I love bringing people together to create art\, and I’m very much looking forward to doing that in Troy next week. \n\n\n\nSina Basila Hickey: You have a pretty full schedule starting at EMPAC and then two events at the Sanctuary. What can we expect? And\, what are you thinking will take place in Troy? Let’s begin with what’s taking place on Wednesday at EMPAC. \n\n\n\nPetra Kuppers: Lovely. So\, on Wednesday at EMPAC\, I will be sharing with people the first cut— the early cut\, it’s not quite finished— the first cut of the Crip/Mad Archive Dances. This is a project I’ve been engaged in since 2021. It started with a residency at the New York Public Library in the dance archives there\, and I was looking for disabled presences\, disabled and mad presences in the archive. I’m not really a historian\, though\, so I’m in the stacks for a little bit and finding material. But then I go outside and I invite my fellow disabled friends\, dancers and choreographers to join me outside the archive\, to engage in these embodied transmissions. I’m bringing out gestures and we dance these together. And I hope to do something very similar to that on Wednesday in Troy as well. I will be sharing with you community media clips from people who identify as disabled and or as mad and in which they share through movement something about their experiences\, and we will take these in and think together about what it means to engage in embody transmission. \n\n\n\nSina Basila Hickey: The idea of sharing experiences through movements\, do you see dance as a form of communication? \n\n\n\nPetra Kuppers: I do see dance as a form of communication\, and I also see dance as a form of sharing energy and agency. So that’s for me\, a very important aspect here is that we’re moving away from the kind of memoir narrative of this is what happened to me. This is my story. This is how I came from beginning\, middle\, end\, and\, of course\, most of these conditions that we have do not have an end. We’re living our lives as we move through. We’re improvising and shifting our way through our lives. So\, dance for me is a very beautiful metaphor and a beautiful concrete\, material way of thinking about the agency of disabled people. \n\n\n\nSina Basila Hickey: And then on Thursday\, you’ll be coming to the Sanctuary as part of the NEA\, Our Town Sanctuary Eco Art Trail project. How does the wheelchair procession along the Sanctuary Eco Art Trail\, followed by the Dream Performance and Workshop\, connect us to land and its histories and futures and support the Eco Art Trail’s goal of connecting living Indigenous legacy with striving for more environmentally just futures? \n\n\n\nPetra Kuppers: Thank you. So\, yeah\, I’m very excited about this part of my visit because it is a complete improvisation. I have not been to this space yet. I’m a visitor. I am the visitor who will ask for permission to enter this land and to be in engagement with this land. I am someone who flies in and flies out\, and I come. And I like to offer\, if I am invited\, the invitation to explore with me what it means to be on this land as Indigenous people\, as settler people\, our different histories\, our different connections to industry\, to brownfield sites\, to urban development\, to\, all the aspects that likely are part of this trail. So if you come to join\, us\, you will find yourself part of a procession that stops and engages in seven minute dances\, short seven minute dances where people can move just with their hands or just with their eyebrows or even just incite themselves. So it’s not like you have to now go out and fully dance and pirouette through the street. Very few people will be listening right now are\, probably likely to do that. But if you want to\, you’re welcome to. But most of us\, I imagine\, will be just sensing away on the street\, sensing through the asphalt\, sensing through the gravel\, sensing down into the Earth and gaining a sense of what might have been there. And we’ll call on the knowledge that is in the street with us at that point. I do not hold that knowledge. I have to ask local people as knowledge carriers to share that knowledge with me in improvisation. \n\n\n\nSina Basila Hickey: So on Thursday\, there will be the Eco Art Trail Wheelchair Procession\, then a community meal\, and then the Dream Workshop Performance. And this is developed from your Starship Somatics classes\, a modality you developed during the lockdown of COVID. You write that “Starship Somatics engage our bodymindspirits as portals\, as trance-mobiles that honor pasts and jet us towards speculative futures among the stars or deep in the Earth\, in flux and transformation.” What else can you tell us about Starship Somatics? \n\n\n\nPetra Kuppers: Lovely. Thank you. Yeah\, this is one of these\, my description of Starship Somatic is a little bit nebulous\, but I hope it works. So we started this in March 2020\, so just as the pandemic began\, everything shut down\, right? None of us could go anywhere\, and\, I really thought about\, well\, how can I create a Somatic modality that is accessible to all people\, that is accessible to people who are disabled\, who have painful bodies\, who\, are painful body\, mind\, spirits\, who cannot just go out and have a run in the neighborhood? What else can we do to keep our tissues engaged creatively? And how can we use this screen as a way of doing that? So I started to run these sessions\, which are usually about just under an hour long\, and it’s a dream journey\, take people on a journey. And when I do this\, particularly in 2020\, when we were in the lockdown phase of it all\, usually half of the screens in front of me\, half of the zoom screens\, had people who were in their tiny little apartments in Brooklyn or what have you\, like really small\, and they were dancing full out from the bed to their know. I could see them just\, like\, reaching across the Zoom square. And the other half\, of the zoom squares showed people resting very peacefully and just going on this deep internal journey. No outward dancing visible at all. I could just see these deeply relaxed faces\, these deeply relaxed\, human\, beautiful bodies lying there. And then at the end of the session\, when we come out\, we usually create a little communal poem\, in which people share a little glimpse of what they’ve done and where they’ve been. And I get to see and I get to hear that they’ve been on amazing planets. When I take people on a journey\, I don’t tell them what the planets look like. It’s your imagination that furnishes where we’re going. So these little glimpses of poetry are the only way that tells me about the intense experiences people have\, and they’re delicious and beautiful and remind us again and again of the deep creativity that we all hold and that we can activate them through internal and external movement practices. And that’s what Starship Somatics is about. We’re journeying into the Earth\, we’re journeying into the stars. But really what we’re doing is we’re journeying with our bodymindspirits imaginations. \n\n\n\nSina Basila Hickey: That’s wonderful. You wrote on your website that your love of movement is pushing against the established definitions of what dancers can be. So can you talk about what these established definitions of dance are and how you are pushing against that? \n\n\n\nPetra Kuppers: So established definitions of dance are not\, really that established anyway\, right? Because dance is always shifting. Dance is always something different. But I imagine many of the people who are listening to us right now have an idea in their mind of when you say dance. It could be that they’re imagining\, a beautiful\, rich African dance practice that’s really grounding us into the Earth. It could be that you’re imagining right now\, a European ballet practice of people\, like\, flying off into space in beautiful linear ways. So these are some of the imaginations that people hold when they think about dance. I think very few of us think about dance as just this creative\, tender shifting of bodies\, minds\, together\, just being engaged creatively in the fact that we have a body. That is\, for me\, one of the core aspects of dancing. That we are\, in various ways\, spiritually\, physically\, energetically engaged in enjoying\, moving and being creative with the fact that we are material beings on this material world. So that somewhat minimal definition of dance is what I mentioned. Activating that very base\, material sense of enjoyment\, agency and creativity. \n\n\n\nSina Basila Hickey: Petra Kuppers we’re very excited to welcome you to Troy to EMPAC on Wednesday\, October 11\, and to the Sanctuary on Thursday\, October 12. Would you like to leave our listeners with anything? \n\n\n\nPetra Kuppers: Yes. So\, dear listener\, for\, a second\, just feel your feet or your sits bones on the ground just as you’re listening right now. And feel your shoulders dropping down into your hands if you’re sitting. And just take\, a breath and feel the roots extending down from your sit bone from\, whatever it is that’s touching the surfaces closest to Earth right now. And I invite you to listen to the rhythm of the environment that you are in. What are the rhythm and the pulses that come to you? I’m sitting here in a McDonald’s in Madison\, Wisconsin\, because\, this is where I find internet. And so I am listening right now to the pulses and the rhythms of the kitchen\, the radio station cars driving by our doors. And I just invite you to enjoy whatever symphony you are in right now. Invite you to think of it as a symphony\, as a\, musical event\, as an event that can move your bodymindspirit\, Thank you\, and I hope to see some of you on Wednesday and Thursday. \n\n\n\nSina Basila Hickey: Thank you so much.

SUMMARY:"Black Matrilineage\, Photography\, and Representation" Book Talk & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation around the book Black Matrilineage\, Photography\, and Representation\, edited by Lesly Deschler Canossi and Zoraida Lopez-Diago\, the duo that makes up Women Picturing Revolution. They will present their book before a discussion with local photographer and doula Jayana LaFountaine and ending with a Q&A with the audience. \n\n\n\n5:00pm-6:00pm: Join Jayana LaFountaine for a photography-based workshop around our identities and lineage in Who’s On Your Face? \n\n\n\n6:00pm-7:00pm: Community Meal \n\n\n\n7:00pm-9:00pm: A discussion around Black motherhood and representations of it in photography\, centered around the book Black Matrilineage\, Photography\, and Representation \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the book:\n\n\n\nBlack Matrilineage\, Photography\, and Representation questions how the Black female body\, specifically the Black maternal body\, navigates interlocking structures that place a false narrative on her body and that of her maternal ancestors. Drawing on a wide range of scholarly inquiry and contemporary art\, this book addresses these misconceptions and fills in the gaps that exist in the photographic representation of Black motherhood\, mothering\, and mutual care within Black communities. \n\n\n\nThe essays and interviews\, paired with a curated selection of images\, address the complicated relationship between Blackness and photography and in particular its gendered dimension\, its relationship to health\, sexuality\, and digital culture – primarily in the context of racialized heteronormativity. This collection\, then\, challenges racist images and discourses\, both historically and in its persistence in contemporary society\, while reclaiming the innate brilliance of Black women through personal stories\, history\, political acts\, connections to place\, moments of pleasure\, and communal celebration. \n\n\n\nThis visual exploration of Black motherhood through pictures made by Black woman–identifying photographers thus serves as a reflection of the past and a portal to the future and contributes to recent scholarship on the complexity of Black life and Black joy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhotography\, revolution\, representation. Through leading seminars\, curating panels\, and consulting services\, Women Picturing Revolution (WPR) co-creators Lesly Deschler Canossi and Zoraida Lopez-Diago are reclaiming and retelling history in a manner that is both radical and necessary. By highlighting the work of woman photographers who have documented conflicts\, crises\, and revolutions in private realms and public spaces\, WPR sheds light on personal and political experiences that are often overlooked or underrepresented. From images made as a response to forced silence\, oppression\, and the inability to act\, to well-known visual journalists documenting upheaval\, Lesly and Zoraida\, along with WPR participants\, examine not only the photographs but also the conditions under which women make images. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJayana LaFountaine is an Afro-Latina portrait photographer and birth Doula based in Troy\, New York.
