DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of two short documentary films made by Indigenous filmmakers\, Katsitsionni Fox and Michelle Schenandoah. They honor the work of our ancestors by regenerating\, rematriating and protecting sacred seeds offering a powerful view of what is possible in Indigenous communities working towards food sovereignty. 2025 RT: 26 mins  \n\n\n\nTRAILER OF KANENON:WE ORIGINAL SEEDS \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRematriation has centered the voice of 9 Indigneous women in a short video series that shares stories of resilience\, leadership\, spirituality and healing. Led by an all women team\, directors and producers\, Katsitsionni Fox (Mohawk) and Michelle Schenandoah (Oneida)\, cinematographer\, Marie Cecile Dietlin\, and multiple editors including Rematriation’s New Media Creator\, Afton P. Lewis. \n\n\n\nWe will be showing the short film on Joanne Shenandoah (Oneida)\, a Grammy winner and humanitarian who had over 40 music awards and 24 recordings. She captured hearts around the world and is an ambassador for peace\, and human and Earth rights.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a film screening of River of Grass\, a documentary film which is described as “An ode to the Florida Everglades\, told through the prescient writings of Marjory Stoneman Douglas\, and those who today call the region home.” This film screening will be followed by a Q&A\, and the filmmakers will also offer a Be The Media! workshop before the screening at 5pm.  \n\n\n\nThis event is a collaboration with the RPI’s iEAR Presents series\, supported by the Department of Arts and the School of Humanities\, Arts\, and Social Sciences\, and is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here\n\n\n\n\nFilm Synopsis\n\n\n\nRIVER OF GRASS is a present-day reimagining of environmentalist Marjory Stoneman Douglas’s celebrated book\, “The Everglades: River of Grass\,” (1947)\, which forever changed the public’s understanding of the area from worthless swamps to an essential source of freshwater\, enabling the ecosystem to endure\, just barely\, today. In the wake of a hurricane\, Douglas visits filmmaker Sasha Wortzel in a dream\, catalyzing a prismatic journey across the Everglades with Miccosukee educator and activist Betty Osceola. Interweaving Douglas’s writing\, personal narration\, present-day verité\, and archival footage\, RIVER OF GRASS reveals how this country’s origin story haunts and inextricably shapes contemporary American life\, while asking how we might weather coming storms better together. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSasha Wortzel is an award-winning filmmaker and interdisciplinary artist using video\, installation\, sculpture\, and sound to explore how past and present are inextricably linked through resonant spaces and their hauntings. Raised in Southwest Florida and based in New York\, Wortzel specifically attends to sites and stories systematically erased or ignored from these regions’ histories. RIVER OF GRASS (2025) is her first feature documentary. The film won the Pare Lorentz Award from IDA\, Hot Docs Joan VanDuzer Special Jury Prize – International Feature Documentary\, and Mead Audience Award\, among others. The film received institutional support from Sundance\, Ford Foundation\, Sandbox Films\, Knight Foundation\, Doc Society\, Field of Vision\, and Chicken & Egg Pictures.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Sanctuary for a session of recording community stories in audio form. Our radio program Hudson Mohawk Magazine (HMM) is a volunteer created news program which platforms stories related to our local community. Everybody Has a Story to Tell is a opportunity for HMM producers to support others in the recording of their own stories.  \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here\n\n\n\n\nThis radio format is Inspired by Storycorp whose mission is “to help us believe in each other by illuminating the humanity and possibility in us all — one story at a time.” There is no better time than now to come to the Sanctuary with a partner to record your story to be included in a community audio archive.  \n\n\n\nBring someone important in your life (family member\, neighbor\, mentor…) to this workshop where you will be guided upon how to conduct an interview\, offered question suggestions\, and then you will be given the opportunity to be paired with volunteer producer to do a radio recording or to record your interview at a later time on your own.  \n\n\n\nAlthough we hope to air these stories on our radio program\, that part is not obligatory.  We also invite you to join us for a community brunch right before the workshop.

DESCRIPTION:Community Radio Days are opportunities for folks to gather around the importance of community radio. Every month a different Hudson Mohawk Magazine producer leads a discussion or exercise\, and anyone is welcome to join. Topics range from how to create grassroots radio\, pursuing a story\, creating a community\, and amplifying lesser heard voices. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer producer or if you just want to be a part of community around the importance of civic journalism\, join us! \n\n\n\nHMM Community Radio Days take place on the first Monday of each month (unless it’s a holiday)\, and we serve some light food and beverages. SUMMARY:Be The Dance Party! feat. Rev. Billy & Stop Shopping Choir
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Sanctuary for our second annual Be The Dance Party!\, an event which emphasized spaces for joy and celebration as acts of resistance. This event is part presentation\, part dance party\, this year featuring Reverend Billy and the Stop Shopping Choir\, a radical performance community focused on justice issues.   \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here\n\n\n\n\nBe The Dance Party! begins with a participatory presentation by Reverend Billy and the Stop Shopping Choir inside the Sanctuary main space followed by a march around our North Troy block and a dance party in Freedom Square. This is a family-friendly event. \n\n\n\nThe Reverend Billy character isn’t so much a parody of a preacher\, as a preacher motif used to blur the lines between performance and religious experience. “It’s definitely a church service\,” Talen explained but\, he added\, it’s “a political rally\, it’s theater\, it’s all three\, it’s none of them.” Alisa Solomon\, the theater critic at the Village Voice\, said of Reverend Billy’s persona\, “The collar is fake\, the calling is real.” Along with the Church of Stop Shopping\, they have been referred to by academics as “performance activism\,” “carnivalesque protest\,” and “artivists.” \n\n\n\nThe Stop Shopping Choir is a radical performance community based in New York City\, with members coming to the Choir from many different creative and activist backgrounds. They have evolved a very particular sound and performance experience from the synthesis of our lived experience\, and are grounded in the work of Justice and in service to the Earth. They love to Sing together.
