DESCRIPTION:Compelling shorts from struggling independent filmmakers\, followed by a discussion of the Occupy movement and role of radical media.  Join regional filmmakers in a fascinating and provocative look at the role that independent media can play in struggle! Curated by Ira McKinley and Bhawin Suchack. who are making a documentary called “The Throwaways\,” which aims to shed light on the struggles of people living on the margins and to challenge a system that oppresses them. McKinley says the films give a “visual history of what took place in the Occupy movement.” Suchak is a filmmaker\, educator and digital media producer who works with emerging technologies as tools to promote expression\, communication\, and connection. He is also the founder and program director of Youth FX\, a digital media program for inner-city teens based out of Grand Street Community Arts.

Dedicated to exploring new perspectives on our country’s most urgent problems\, the Facing Change collective aims to influence public discourse by humanizing a wide spectrum of neglected and misunderstood issues.   \n\n\n\nJoin visiting photojournalists for a walk-through of the exhibition from 5:30 to 6:30 PM on March 3\, 2012. DESCRIPTION:David Gilbert’s new book\, Love and Struggle: My Life in SDS\, the Weather Underground\, and Beyond\, sparks a dialogue about what social justice movements can learn from each other.  \n\n\n\nCurrently serving a 75 year to life sentence in the New York State prison system\, Gilbert chose a political path – an Eagle Scout turned member of the Weather Underground. A panel of today’s young activists will talk with ’60s revolutionaries about their common struggles\, grounded by critical exchange and self-reflection. \n\n\n\nPanelists include Naomi Jaffe\, Barbara Smith\, Jeff Jones\, Dan Lyles\, Laura Travison\, and Victorio Reyes and special guest Larry White\, co-founder of The New Jim Crow Movement to End Mass Incarceration.

DESCRIPTION:Born in Italy but raised in Quebec\, vocalist and guitarist Marco Calliari was a member of Montreal-based Anonymous for 15 years before setting out as a solo artist. Though the band had been an outlet for his love of hard rock and metal\, his parents instilled a love for both opera and Italian pop\, and he had also studied classical singing while in high school. Now he explores the music of the Italian diaspora with nods to flamenco\, klezmer\, ska and more!

DESCRIPTION:Free Jazz and electronica meet the rhythms of the world. Adam Rudolph and Joseph Bowie first performed together in 2000 at Lincoln Center with Yusef Lateef. They have collaborated in numerous projects since then\, including a trio with Omar Sosa and\, most recently\, in Adam Rudolph’s Moving Pictures. Their music is grounded in the American improvisational tradition while embracing music forms\, languages\, instrumentation\, and cosmologies of Europe\, Africa\, the Middle East\, Asia\, and the African Diaspora.   \n\n\n\nDecades of performance and research into these music cultures have given the artists the background and experience to create a unique and unprecedented improvisational art form.  \n\n\n\nJoseph Bowie: trombone\, electronics\, vocal\, harmonica\, congas\, djembe\, percussion; and Adam Rudolph: handrumset (congas\, djembe\, tarija)\, frame drum\, thumb pianos\, gongs\, percussion and multiphonic singing\, sintir\, piano  \n\n\n\nCo-sponsored by iEAR Presents! and the Arts Department at RPI.

DESCRIPTION:Guerrilla Midwife (Deja Bernhardt\, 2010) depicts the courage of mothers and their midwives as they hold hands across barriers of language and culture\, guiding us toward a reinvention of medical protocols. It is the story of a war waged gently in the belief that peace on earth can be achieved\, one baby at a time. The feature will be preceded by a potluck and a short video by journalist Erin Colligan highlighting the work of local midwife K. Michelle Doyle.  \n\n\n\nA Q&A with local midwives will follow the screening.  \n\n\n\nCo-sponsored by Local Care Midwifery\, Birthnet\, and The Pregnancy Project.
