SUMMARY:Exhibition at the Underground Gallery with Agricultural Stewardship Association: "Kids\, Farm\, Photography: Connecting with the Land"
DESCRIPTION:Connecting with the Land (on view from March 22 – June 15\, 2013)  is a photography exhibit that lets us experience local farms through the eyes of youth. The photos were taken during photography classes at farms in Rensselaer and Washington counties. The Farm Photography for Kids is a program by the Agricultural Stewardship Association (ASA) a community-supported land trust dedicated to protecting our local farmland from encroaching development. High school students in photography classes visited rural farms in Rensselaer and Washington counties\, while urban youth involved in the Capital District Community Gardens Produce Project documented their 8th Street Farm in Troy and Soul Fire Farm in Grafton. With special guests from the Produce Project and Agricultural Stewardship Association.  \n\n\n\nReception food prepared by Produce Project and KitchenSanctuary.

While the beans cook\, create media\, share\, connect!    \n\n\n\nWe will learn to use a pressure cooker to make fast and delicious bean recipes on a budget. Please bring your favorite bean recipes in a recipe card\, photos and stories. While the beans cook\, we will create media\, share and connect. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBe The Media! workshops teach multimedia skills to community members in order to develop urgently needed independent local voices. Our goal is to empower the public through independent media making\, supplying them with the tools to tell their own stories through different mediums of media including video\, radio and journalism.

DESCRIPTION:Zimbabwe’s pride\, most successful artist and national treasure\, Oliver Mtukudzi is gifted with a deep and gusty voice plus a talent for writing songs that reflect on the daily life and struggles of his people. His distinctive sound also has made him one of the most popular Afropop artists in the Western World. ‘Tuku’ as he is known\, began performing in 1977 and has earned a devoted following across Africa and beyond\, all the while incorporating elements of different musical traditions. A member of Zimbabwe’s Kore Kore tribe\, he sings in the nation’s dominant Shona language as well as Ndebele and English.

SUMMARY:"Herman’s House" with Filmmaker Angad Bhalla
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of an acclaimed documentary that explores the injustice of solitary confinement and the transformative power of art. There will be a full scale model of a solitary confinement cell on display. Herman’s House tells the story of Herman Joshua Wallace\, who has spent the past 40 years in solitary confinement at Louisiana’s notorious Angola Prison Farm. At the urging of artist Jackie Sumell\, Wallace\, working by letter and occasionally phone\, designs his own post-prison house. The film follows their unique creative partnership\, as Sumell builds an exhibit based on Herman’s story\, complete with plans for the house and a full-scale model of the cell. The story takes a turn when Sumell sets out to build a bricks-and-mortar structure for Herman and authorities decide to review his case. A panel discussion on the film and the arbitrary\, inhumane and unsafe use of solitary confinement in New York State will follow the screening. The event is sponsored by the NYCLU\, New York Council of Churches\, National Religious Campaign Against Torture and Prisoners Legal Services.

DESCRIPTION:Birth Story is the story of counterculture heroine Ina May Gaskin and her spirited friends\, who taught themselves midwifery from the ground up and created a model of care for women and babies that changed a generation’s approach to childbirth.  Screening preceded by a community potluck with “Birthnet” Bake Sale/Silent Auction Fundraiser. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers and a panel discussion with local midwives.
