DESCRIPTION:Moving forward with Scotland’s past! Inspired by their rich heritage of Celtic music and fired by the strength and vibrancy of today’s Scottish cultural scene which they have done much to create and fuel\, The Battlefield Band has led and been at the forefront of a great revival in Scottish music. Refusing to be limited musically by suffocating antiquarianism\, or musical fashions\, they have mixed the old songs and music with a new self-penned repertoire\, all played on a fusion of ancient and modern instruments – bagpipes\, fiddle\, synthesizer\, guitar\, flutes\, bodhran and accordion. Band Members: Sean O’Donnell\, Alasdair White\, Ewen Henderson\, and Mike Katz.

DESCRIPTION:Christine Salem sings dangerous tunes that rouse the spirits and challenge the authorities – which means that her shows are as controversial as they are spellbinding. The rousing deep-voiced singer from Reunion Island – the multi-ethnic French province in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar – performs maloya. The once-banned\, African-influenced music of the Creole descendants of slaves who worked the sugar plantations\, maloya is a blues-like music rooted in the work songs and chants of the island’s African slaves. Rising up from a troubled childhood on the streets of Saint-Denis\, Salem has become the greatest living champion of maloya\, infusing the trance-inducing blend of voices and percussion with fresh inspiration and contemporary influences.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening at the Underground Gallery: "Female Vets Speak" with Women from Guardian House (10/17/13-12/03/13)
DESCRIPTION:From 2012-13\, women from Guardian House- a transitional home for female veterans in Ballston Spa attended photography and writing workshops that documented their lives after serving in the military. Some of the women were active duty and others were not; however\, similarities in their experiences were powerful and created lasting friendships. As one participant reflected\, “Why did it take this class to talk about our experiences as women in the military? It seems that being in the military is a natural topic for men to talk openly about\, but not for women!” The women speak of long dark journeys\, homelessness and hope\, struggles and personal strength. As they reflect upon being looked at but not seen\, their powerful photographs and poetic prose offer lights of hope. Hear from Ed Murphy\, Executive Director of Workforce Development Institute\, Vickie Kereszi\, Art of Labor Manager\, and participants\, to learn the stories and process of this amazing project! Exhibition on view in the Underground Gallery through December 3\, 2013. Co-sponsored by Workforce Development Institute.

SUMMARY:Be The Media! Two Day Workshop with Paul Vanouse: North Troy Subject Inversion - PCR by Campfire\, 10/19/13 - 10/20/13
DESCRIPTION:Join the Sanctuary for a two-day Be The Media! workshop with Bio-Artist Paul Vanouse. Polymerase Chain Reaction is a technology of “self-discovery\,” or less optimistically\, authoritarian identification. CR has replaced the original DNA fingerprinting methods in many cases\, including massive government DNA databases such as the US FBI’s CODIS project. With a DIY Laboratory created in the Sanctuary cafe\, artist Vanouse will guide participants through the process of DNA extraction\, amplification\, and photography. We’ll learn the processes of how the criminal justice manipulates these techniques\, and how misinformation in popular culture about DNA fingerprinting endangers personal privacy and criminalizes people of color and low-income populations. Participants who participate in the full process will receive a free t-shirt with their DNA profile!

DESCRIPTION:Remember the OJ Simpson case? This talk is designed to creatively counter mass-media dramatizations that typically misinform the public\, and provide audiences with the conceptual tools to understand current issues surrounding use of DNA imaging and databasing. Just as the term DNA fingerprinting has led to misinformation regarding its efficacy\, DNA evidence is also hyperbolized in popular culture. The “CSI effect” is a reference to the phenomenon of shows such as the CSI franchise overstating the accuracy of forensic techniques\, and exaggerating the abilities of forensic science.  Part of the “Bioart in an Industrial Wasteland” project. DESCRIPTION:With his 2010 World Cup performance before a billion people in Johannesburg\, South Africa\, Vieux Farka Touré has become one of the most celebrated African guitarists in history. Dubbed the “Hendrix of the Sahara” by critics\, Vieux Farka Touré is a guitar master–but he also plays the African kora\, a combination drum and string instrument\, and several other traditional African instruments. He mixes tradition from his roots in Mali\, and inspiration from his father\, Grammy-award winning Ali Farka Touré\, with American blues and jazz. It’s simply impossible to burden Vieux with old associations. A benefit for the Sanctuary for Independent Media.
