SUMMARY:The Underground Gallery Opening: Troy Project by Susan B. Anthony
DESCRIPTION:The Sanctuary’s Underground Gallery presents Susan B. Anthony’s “Troy Project.” This photo series compares the city of Troy’s heyday during the Industrial Revolution with its present challenges\, through intimate portraits and cityscapes. The exhibit will be on view from September 29th through December 16th\, 2017. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“My photographs depict the juxtaposition of past and present\, old and new\, decay and rebirth in this remarkable historical city. Troy was once one of the most prosperous cities in the United States thanks to its proximity to natural resources–especially the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers and the Erie Canal. The city suffered greatly when industry moved out and its economy has never really recovered. There are signs of change because of the community’s resilience\, but it is a slow\, uphill battle. The story of Troy is one of suffering and sadness\, but also of hope and growth.”   \n\n\n\nSusan B. Anthony has been an artist all her life. She was born in Brooklyn and now splits her time between Manhattan and Columbia County. Many of her photographs are set in Upstate New York.

SUMMARY:Melissa Aldana Quartet
DESCRIPTION:A rising tenor saxophonist taking the jazz world by storm\, Melissa Aldana leads a high octane quartet featuring: Michael King\, piano; Pablo Menares\, bass; Tommy Crane\, percussion. Originally from Chile\, Aldana broke into the New York jazz scene in 2009. She quickly asserted herself as one of the most esteemed tenor saxophonists of her generation. In 2013\, Aldana was recognized as the first female instrumentalist and the first South American ever to win the prestigious Thelonious Monk Competition. Since then\, she has continued to raise the bar and innovate new sounds from traditional jazz forms.  \n\n\n\nFunded through the Mid Atlantic Tour Program of the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation with support from the National Endowment for the Art.

Whether you just want to take in the exhibit\, pick up a plant identification guide\, or get hands-on bio-mapping the area\, packaging some seeds or coloring postcards using plant-based ink\, our doors are open to you! Open Hours are an opportunity to share your experience of nature in North Troy. What part of our urban ecosystem caught your eye this week? What do you love? What could you live without? NATURE Lab is partnering with a range of collaborators (from artists and scientists to farmers\, community volunteers and students) in an effort to better understand the environmental challenges we face in our shared urban habitat. Your contribution can help us further our mission of environmental remediation through education\, resource access\, and inspiration!  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis season’s Open Hours are hosted by artist-naturalist Ellie Irons of the Next Epoch Seed Library and Environmental Performance Agency\, and a rotating selection of artists\, researchers and other community members.

SUMMARY:NATURE Lab Workshop: Seed Gathering Walk and Great Leaf Forward
DESCRIPTION:Join Ellie Irons of the Next Epoch Seed Library and Azuré Keahi of Collard City Growers for an urban seed gathering hike in North Troy\, followed by an afternoon of autumnal gardening activity. During this low key urban hike we’ll identify\, bio-map and gather seeds from wild urban plants\, building a North Troy seed collection! Then punctuate the season before hibernation with a hands-on review of fall time garden chores: garlic planting\, deep mulching\, and compost evaluation.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNATURE Lab (short for North Troy Art\, Technology and Urban Research in Ecology) is a volunteer-led initiative integrating art\, science\, and technology in regular community workshops\, public art installations\, and ongoing research and collection activities in our surrounding ecosystem. Artist/scientist teams will work with the community around issues of “curing” our local ecologies\, environmental health\, public health and sustainability. \n\n\n\nNATURE Lab workshops educate community members on the environmental trials we face in our shared urban habitat\, and open up a dialogue about how we\, together\, can work towards environmental remediation.

DESCRIPTION:Chilean singer/songwriter\, instrumentalist and composer Nano Stern’s style is a unique fusion of jazz\, rock\, folk and traditional Chilean music. This workshop explores the global state of music for social change\, focusing on the neuva canción tradition in South America. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBe the Media! workshops teach multimedia skills to community members to develop urgently needed independent local voices. Our goal is to empower the public through independent media making\, supplying them with the tools to tell their own stories through different mediums of media including video\, radio and journalism.

DESCRIPTION:Nano Stern- appearing with Patricio Rojas on bass and Cristian Carvacho on drums- is the voice of a newly politicized Chilean generation squarely in the nueva canción tradition. The band’s vibrant musical style exudes the same colorful energy indicated by the tour’s title. As folk legend Joan Baez once said\, Stern “stands out for his ability to play various instruments\, but his most faithful companions will always be his guitar and his voice in the simplicity that characterizes him as a person.” Watch them capture this colorful simplicity live at The Sanctuary. Local heroes Taína Asili and Gaetano Vaccaro open the show.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPreceded by a workshop and a potluck.
