SUMMARY:NATURE Lab Workshop: Currant Affair
DESCRIPTION:Learn to propagate fruiting shrubs from cuttings as we plant an edible property line of currants for community consumption at Collard City Growers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNATURE Lab (short for North Troy Art\, Technology and Urban Research in Ecology) is a volunteer-led initiative integrating art\, science\, and technology in regular community workshops\, public art installations\, and ongoing research and collection activities in our surrounding ecosystem. Artist/scientist teams will work with the community around issues of “curing” our local ecologies\, environmental health\, public health and sustainability. \n\n\n\nNATURE Lab workshops educate community members on the environmental trials we face in our shared urban habitat\, and open up a dialogue about how we\, together\, can work towards environmental remediation.

Tips include: breath and delivery\, attitude and tone\, vocal placement\, pacing and phrasing.  With Tom Hawn\, longtime instructor at the New School of Radio and Television.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTom’s lengthy tenure at The New School began when his guest lecture on radio arts led to an offer for fulltime employment. 32 years later\, he still helps students perfect their on-air voices for both radio and television. \n\n\n\nTom has served for many years locally in positions such as music director\, morning air personality\, and voice talent at stations including WROW\, WWOM\, WRGB-TV\, and Time Warner\, as well as at WBZ-TV in Boston. His experience allows him to help students gain a deep understanding of station formats and real-world scenarios\, while learning to properly develop and deliver their breaks. – New School Albany \n\n\n\nBe the Media! workshops teach multimedia skills to community members in order to develop urgently needed independent local voices. Our goal is to empower the public through independent media making\, supplying them with the tools to tell their own stories through different mediums of media including video\, radio and journalism.

DESCRIPTION:Documentary filmmaker Jonathan Olshefski presents his first feature-length film: QUEST. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nQuest was filmed with vérité intimacy for over a decade\, and is a moving portrait of a family in North Philadelphia set against the backdrop of a country now in turmoil. Olshefski’s intimate style emphasizes the beautiful complexity of relationships\, and serves as an example of how an American family goes about healing and persevering. Quest premiered at the 2017 Sundance Festival. Presented by director\, John Olshefski and producer\, Sabrina Schmidt Gordon.  \n\n\n\nPreceded by a potluck dinner. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJonathan Olshefski is an artist and documentary filmmaker. QUEST is his first feature-length documentary. He strives to tell intimate and nuanced stories that honor his subjects’ complexity by employing a production process that emphasizes collaboration\, dialogue\, and relationship to amplify their voices and reflect their points of view in an artful way. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the sixth annual year-end festivities\, featuring free food from Unity House\, Troy Bike Rescue bike give-away\, tours of our new NATURE Lab gallery\, on-demand typewriter poetry\, music\, arts activities\, portraits by internationally recognized photographer Brenda Ann Kenneally\, and tree lighting at Freedom Square (at the corner of 101st and 5th/6th Avenue)\, and more! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCo-sponsored by North Troy Community Network\, Bella Napoli\, Unity House\, Troy Bike Rescue\, North Central Little League\, Troy Zero Waste\, TEAM Hero and Foto Care. \n\n\n\nThis project is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBrenda Ann Kenneally is a Guggenheim and Soros Criminal Justice Media Fellow. She attended the University of Miami\, where she earned a B.S. in sociology and photojournalism\, and New York University\, where she received an M.A. in studio art. Kenneally has focused on how families get lost in a culture of drugs and prison. She searches for ways to motivate inner-city women to empower themselves\, despite their limited social and economic opportunities. Kenneally’s work has been featured in the New York Times Magazine\, Rolling Stone\, and Ms. Magazine\, among other publications. In 2000\, she won the Community Awareness Award from the National Press Photographer’s Association\, and in 2001 she was awarded the International Prize for Photojournalism in Gijon\, Spain. Kenneally’s work in Brooklyn has received support from the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund\, the Mother Jones Documentary Fund\, and the Nikon Sabbatical Grant\, in addition to the Open Society Institute. Kenneally has worked with us exhibiting her photos\, teaching photojournalism workshops\, and curating several exhibitions.
