SUMMARY:Lead in the Soil? A Community Investigation
DESCRIPTION:We are investigating lead in North Central Troy\, NY! Come to this public meeting to learn how YOU can be a citizen scientist\, using easy DIY kits to test soil for lead contamination. \n\n\n\nAt this hands-on\, participatory event\, you will: \n\n\n\n\nLearn why we’re taking action on soil lead\n\n\n\nMake a map together of places where we interact with soil (playgrounds\, gardens\, empty lots\, etc.)\n\n\n\nFind out what you can do about contaminated soil – with a special presentation from the Radix Ecological Sustainability Center\n\n\n\nLearn how to collect and prepare soil samples for testing\n\n\n\nSign up for a FREE soil testing workshop that will take place on June 17\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis special event is a joint project of NATURE Lab and the Our Soil team at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (https://oursoil.wp.rpi.edu/). \n\n\n\nThe event on June 3 is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:People's Health Sanctuary Potluck
DESCRIPTION:We welcome community members\, healers\, caregivers\, healthcare workers and all interested in health to join us for a community meal to connect and learn about ways you can get involved. Bring a dish or snack to share\, or just yourself and your ideas and passions! \n\n\n\nWe’ll meet outdoors in the NATURE Lab yard\, 3319 6th Avenue\, weather permitting. In case of rain\, we’ll meet inside on the second floor.  \n\n\n\nJoin us for a community meal at the People’s Health Sanctuary\, to learn more about what we’ve done so far\, and discuss what the PHS space can become. In addition to sharing a meal together\, we will introduce ways for interested folks to become more involved in the planning and organizing of the space\, including a series of Healing Days in July\, August\, and September.

SUMMARY:Medicine Garden: Earth Burial
DESCRIPTION:This will be the first event in a series related to the establishment and growth of a Medicine Garden in the NATURE Lab yard at the Sanctuary. Lead by artist Azuré Keahi\, we will be burying hand-sculpted ollas (clay watering vessels) and planting some of the medicines. \n\n\n\nThis living sculpture will feature four powerful plant allies growing among functional sculptural elements\, including slow-release watering vessels (ollas) and cut metal way-finding sign posts. With a focus on Stockbridge-Munsee Mohican medicinal traditions\, the included plants–catmint/Askaskwaamek\, joe-pye weed/Pkuwiimakw\, yarrow/Wtakiipakw\, and bee balm/Wteehaskwal–also have intertribal and cross-cultural resonance. The sculpture’s quadrant design\, with four growing beds arranged in a circle ringed by ollas\, provides a focal point for a series of plant and land-centric gatherings that honor Indigenous pasts and presents on this land as we dream and build towards Indigenous futures. This project is part of the Sanctuary’s growing Eco-Art Trail\, supported by an NEA Our Town Grant in collaboration with the Stockbridge-Munsee Community Band of Mohican Indians.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis project is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Arts Program\, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of The Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by The Arts Center of the Capital Region. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEarth Burial Performance and Workshop

Join us for an outdoor concert and summer celebration featuring artists of the Capital Region who have been inspired by the 50 year history of hip hop music and culture! Performances kick off at 2:00 pm and featuring Victory Soul Orchestra with special guests UND3RSTANDING. The event MC is H Bosh Jr.  \n\n\n\nTHE EVENT HAS BEEN MOVED INDOORS DUE TO RAIN! The event location is at the Sanctuary main space: 3361 6th Ave\, North Troy  \n\n\n\nThis free\, all-ages event will feature: \n\n\n\n\nLive music by Victory Soul Orchestra & UND3RSTANDING\n\n\n\nBPM Lessons beat making station by Jae Joseph\n\n\n\nFace painting\n\n\n\nFood & refreshments \n\n\n\nArt activities\n\n\n\nGarden activities\n\n\n\nCommunity resource fair\n\n\n\nand more! \n\n\n\n\nCo-sponsoring this event are many fabulous organizations doing great work across our community including Troy Area Labor Council\, Poor People’s Campaign\, Troy Central Little League\, SNUG\, CEO\, Oakwood Community Center\, TRIP\, Shades of Cocoa\, and UAlbany TRIO EOC Program.  \n\n\n\nABOUT THE ARTISTS \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVictory Soul Orchestra is a hometown horn funk favorite. The dirty sounds of New Orleans brass drive their sound with some influences including Galactic as well as the Dap Kings. You can also find them fronted by Albany’s own JB!! aka Dirty Moses and singer Dali Soto. Their efforts combined help create a funk/rap show that brings the house down. In January 2019 they released their first album\, ‘Astrobeat’ – now available on vinyl and all streaming platforms! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUnd3rstanding is a three-man Hip-Hop group from Upstate New York featuring Sev Statik\, SES Vth\, and Knowle’ge. Individually\, these artists stand as giants in the realm of underground hip-hop\, but collectively\, they form a powerful group with a mission to entertain\, enlighten and embody what it means to be an emcee. The name Und3rstanding alludes to supreme mathematics and the principles of knowledge\, wisdom\, and understanding – a set of teachings that each of the members have learned from and hold dearly.Founded in 2015\, the members of Und3rstanding had quickly become fans of each other and after performing at several events in the Albany area.  It was Sev Statik who tossed out the idea that they should combine talents and “form like Voltron” into a super lyrical squadron.  Knowle’ge and SES Vth agreed\, and from there they began recruiting the soulful boom-bappington master producer himself\, Deborah’s Son\, to produce their project.
