Drop by to see what it’s all about.  \n\n\n\nHudson Mohawk Magazine (HMM) is a volunteer-produced\, local news hour that provides sanctuary for the discussion of topics affecting our communities. Our program builds community in Troy and the surrounding Capital Region through broad grassroots participation. \n\n\n\n3:00pm: Doors open. Producers come in and work on projects in our computer lab. We offer light beverages and snacks.4:30pm: Established producers and newcomers gather around the conference table to discuss HMM and how we do what we do. Discussions often have a theme such as interview tactics\, outreach\, editing\, structuring a story\, etc. 6:00pm: See a live recording of HMM. Hear the variety of stories on our program in real time\, and see how hosts and engineers in action. 7:07pm: Join our weekly programming meeting where producers come together to program the week ahead. Meet our team\, and share your ideas for for stories.  \n\n\n\nDo you like to tell stories? Are you interested in reporting on issues you care about? Do you want to engage with your community? This event is featured as part of the Sanctuary for Independent Media’s Freedom Fest in collaboration with the American Music Festival. Join us at the Sanctuary Main Space for the culmination of our multi-year NEA Our Town Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail Project! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBrent Michael Davids is an internationally celebrated Mohican and Munsee-Lenape composer\, and self-described music warrior. As an advocate for Native equity and parity\, Davids places Native voices front and center. He originated and co-founded the award-winning Native American Composer Apprentice Project (NACAP)\, championing indigenous youth to compose their own written music. He uses indigenous instruments\, including handmade quartz flutes\, and pens performable notations that are themselves visual works of art. Davids is co-director of the Lenape Center in Manhattan\, and is enrolled in the Stockbridge-Munsee Community. His composing career spans nearly five decades\, with countless awards and commissions from America’s most celebrated organizations and ensembles. \n\n\n\n“When we collaborate and experiment in song\, we are discovering life benefits\, not simply musical ones. DESCRIPTION:Host! Tea\, Pie\, and Dialogue. \n\n\n\nDuring this workshop\, we will explore what it means to host. Hospitality is an important part of my art. I will share my meditations on what the word “host” means to me and invite you to do the same. We will make tea\, pie and weave our meditations together into a community art piece. \n\n\n\nStoryCooking\, my practice\, involves developing recipes\, facilitating cooking and storytelling workshops\, and producing multimedia. “Host!” project engages with the local community\, creating opportunities for skill sharing\, the use of local food\, and food rescue. At the core Ellie’s work is an exploration of the aesthetic of the quotidian and hospitality as art and community building.More background on Ellie’s extensive work with the Sanctuary: One of our key annual food justice celebrations is “StoryHarvest: From Seed to Table\,” encouraging diverse members of the community to celebrate and connect through music and stories of food. Initiated back in 2012 by food artist Ellie Markovitch\, Ellie returned to North Central for in September 2023 for an NEA Our Town Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail Residency to focus on the Indigenous and diverse cultural legacies of food. Born in Brazil\, Ellie now lives in Maine with her family\, where she teaches at the University of Maine.

SUMMARY:PHS Community Acupuncture
DESCRIPTION:PHS is offering the first People’s Health Community Acupuncture as part of our Healing Days.  Community acupuncture is a grassroots model to increase access to acupuncture. It is done in a group setting (about 5 people at a time) in comfortable recliners and uses points mainly in your hands and feet.   \n\n\n\nThe last appointment of the day is at 3:10p. Walk-ins are welcome\, if there is space. Please wear comfy clothes and drink plenty of water!  Acupuncture will be performed by Xavier\, a NYS certified physician-acupuncturist. He was trained in a Japanese style formulated by Kiko Matsumoto through the Acumed program. \n\n\n\n\nSign up here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat is acupuncture?\n\n\n\nJohn Hopkins Medicine writes\, acupuncture is the practice of penetrating the skin with thin\, solid\, metallic needles which are then activated through gentle and specific movements of the practitioner’s hands or with electrical stimulation.  \n\n\n\nAcupuncture is part of the ancient practice of Traditional Chinese medicine. Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners believe the human body has more than 2\,000 acupuncture points connected by pathways or meridians. These pathways create an energy flow (Qi\, pronounced “chee”) through the body that is responsible for overall health. Disruption of the energy flow can cause disease. By applying acupuncture to certain points\, it is thought to improve the flow of Qi\, thereby improving health. Read more \n\n\n\nMore about community acupuncture\n\n\n\nCommunity acupuncture is a grassroots model designed to increase access to acupuncture. It is done in a group setting\, mainly using points mainly in your hands\, feet\, and ears.  In the US\, specifically at the Lincoln Hospital Detox Program in the Bronx\, the practice was brought over in the 70’s from China by Black Panther and Young Lord activists.  It has been refined and spread through the work of the Peoples Organization of Community Acupuncture (POCA).

We will have drop in activities for families and garden tasks for our adult volunteers. \n\n\n\nJune 21 will include a Make Music Day activity with special guest Miss Deb\, who will lead children and families in flower pot drumming from 4:00-5:00 pm! (come out to Freedom Fest on June 8 if you want to make a drum!) \n\n\n\nWe are open for regular open garden hours every Friday through October. Join us in tending\, harvesting\, and caring for the plants and the land\, or just take some time to rest amongst greenery and appreciate the gifts of the garden. These open hours are family-oriented and open to all!
