In 1988 he wrote The End of Nature\, the first book for a common audience about global warming. McKibben comes to the Sanctuary for a talk on his latest book\, followed by a Q&A and book sale. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur climate\, and our democracy\, are melting down. But Bill McKibben\, one of the first to sound the alarm about the climate crisis\, insists the moment is also full of possibility. Energy from the sun and wind is suddenly the cheapest power on the planet and growing faster than any energy source in history—if we can keep accelerating the pace\, we have a chance. \n\n\n\nHere Comes the Sun tells the story of the sudden spike in power from the sun and wind—and the desperate fight of the fossil fuel industry and their politicians to hold this new power at bay. From the everyday citizens who installed solar panels equal to a third of Pakistan’s electric grid in a year to the world’s sixth-largest economy—California—nearly halving its use of natural gas in the last two years\, Bill McKibben traces the arrival of plentiful\, inexpensive solar energy. And he shows how solar power is more than just a path out of the climate crisis: it is a chance to reorder the world on saner and more humane grounds. You can’t hoard solar energy or hold it in reserves—it’s available to all. \n\n\n\nThere’s no guarantee we can make this change in time\, but there is a hope—in McKibben’s eyes\, our best hope for a new civilization: one that looks up to the sun\, every day\, as the star that fuels our world. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBill McKibben is founder of Third Act\, which organizes people over the age of 60 for action on climate and justice. \n\n\n\nHis 1989 book The End of Nature is regarded as the first book for a general audience about climate change\, and has appeared in 24 languages. He’s gone on to write 20 books\, and his work appears regularly in periodicals from the New Yorker to Rolling Stone. He serves as the Schumann Distinguished Scholar in Environmental Studies at Middlebury College\, as a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences\, and he has won the Gandhi Peace Prize as well as honorary degrees from 20 colleges and universities. He was awarded the Right Livelihood Award\, sometimes called the alternative Nobel\, in the Swedish Parliament. Foreign Policy named him to its inaugural list of the world’s 100 most important global thinkers. \n\n\n\nMcKibben helped found 350.org\, the first global grassroots climate campaign\, which has organized protests on every continent\, including Antarctica\, for climate action. He played a leading role in launching the opposition to big oil pipeline projects like Keystone XL\, and the fossil fuel divestment campaign\, which has become the biggest anti-corporate campaign in history\, with endowments worth more than $40 trillion stepping back from oil\, gas and coal. He stepped down as board chair of 350 in 2015\, and left the board and stepped down from his volunteer role as senior adviser in 2020\, accepting emeritus status. He lives in the mountains above Lake Champlain with his wife\, the writer Sue Halpern\, where he spends as much time as possible outdoors. In 2014\, biologists credited his career by naming a new species of woodland gnat—Megophthalmidia mckibbeni–in his honor.

It is ideal for use in group settings and has been proven effective internationally for addiction\, withdrawal\, emotional regulation\, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). \n\n\n\nThis simple 5 needle protocol was developed first in the 1970s in Hong Kong\, then adopted in the Bronx by the Black Panthers and the Young Lords to treat addiction. Their focus always comes back to embodiment\, grounding\, and how we can learn so much about healing from our human and non-human kin. They like to explore body movement through dance and somatic healing and offer reiki\, somatic meditations\, ear seeds\, and ear acupuncture in the tradition of the Young Lords and Black Panthers. Every month a different Hudson Mohawk Magazine producer leads a discussion or exercise\, and anyone is welcome to join. Topics range from how to create grassroots radio\, pursuing a story\, creating a community\, and amplifying lesser heard voices. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer producer or if you just want to be a part of community around the importance of civic journalism\, join us! \n\n\n\nHMM Community Radio Days take place on the first Monday of each month (unless it’s a holiday)\, and we serve some light food and beverages. Led by an all women team\, directors and producers\, Katsitsionni Fox (Mohawk) and Michelle Schenandoah (Oneida)\, cinematographer\, Marie Cecile Dietlin\, and multiple editors including Rematriation’s New Media Creator\, Afton P. Lewis. \n\n\n\nWe will be showing the short film on Joanne Shenandoah (Oneida)\, a Grammy winner and humanitarian who had over 40 music awards and 24 recordings. She captured hearts around the world and is an ambassador for peace\, and human and Earth rights.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a film screening of River of Grass\, a documentary film which is described as “An ode to the Florida Everglades\, told through the prescient writings of Marjory Stoneman Douglas\, and those who today call the region home.” This film screening will be followed by a Q&A\, and the filmmakers will also offer a Be The Media! workshop before the screening at 5pm.  \n\n\n\nThis event is a collaboration with the RPI’s iEAR Presents series\, supported by the Department of Arts and the School of Humanities\, Arts\, and Social Sciences\, and is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here\n\n\n\n\nFilm Synopsis\n\n\n\nRIVER OF GRASS is a present-day reimagining of environmentalist Marjory Stoneman Douglas’s celebrated book\, “The Everglades: River of Grass\,” (1947)\, which forever changed the public’s understanding of the area from worthless swamps to an essential source of freshwater\, enabling the ecosystem to endure\, just barely\, today. In the wake of a hurricane\, Douglas visits filmmaker Sasha Wortzel in a dream\, catalyzing a prismatic journey across the Everglades with Miccosukee educator and activist Betty Osceola. Interweaving Douglas’s writing\, personal narration\, present-day verité\, and archival footage\, RIVER OF GRASS reveals how this country’s origin story haunts and inextricably shapes contemporary American life\, while asking how we might weather coming storms better together. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSasha Wortzel is an award-winning filmmaker and interdisciplinary artist using video\, installation\, sculpture\, and sound to explore how past and present are inextricably linked through resonant spaces and their hauntings. Raised in Southwest Florida and based in New York\, Wortzel specifically attends to sites and stories systematically erased or ignored from these regions’ histories. RIVER OF GRASS (2025) is her first feature documentary. The film won the Pare Lorentz Award from IDA\, Hot Docs Joan VanDuzer Special Jury Prize – International Feature Documentary\, and Mead Audience Award\, among others. The film received institutional support from Sundance\, Ford Foundation\, Sandbox Films\, Knight Foundation\, Doc Society\, Field of Vision\, and Chicken & Egg Pictures.

SUMMARY:Everybody Has a Story To Tell Radio Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Sanctuary for a session of recording community stories in audio form. Our radio program Hudson Mohawk Magazine (HMM) is a volunteer created news program which platforms stories related to our local community. Everybody Has a Story to Tell is a opportunity for HMM producers to support others in the recording of their own stories.  \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here\n\n\n\n\nThis radio format is Inspired by Storycorp whose mission is “to help us believe in each other by illuminating the humanity and possibility in us all — one story at a time.” There is no better time than now to come to the Sanctuary with a partner to record your story to be included in a community audio archive.  \n\n\n\nBring someone important in your life (family member\, neighbor\, mentor…) to this workshop where you will be guided upon how to conduct an interview\, offered question suggestions\, and then you will be given the opportunity to be paired with volunteer producer to do a radio recording or to record your interview at a later time on your own.  \n\n\n\nAlthough we hope to air these stories on our radio program\, that part is not obligatory.  We also invite you to join us for a community brunch right before the workshop.
