SUMMARY:"My Country\, My Country" with Filmmaker Laura Poitras
DESCRIPTION:Working Alone in Iraq over eighteen months\, My Country\, My Country (2006) Peabody Award-winning filmmaker Laura Poitras creates an extraordinarily intimate portrait of Iraqis living under US occupation. Her principal focus is Dr. Riyadh\, an Iraqi medical doctor\, father of six and Sunni Political candidate. An outspoken critic of the occupation\, he is equally passionate about the need to establish democracy in Iraq\, arguing that Sunni participation in the January 2005 elections is essential. Yet all around him\, Dr. Riyadh sees only chaos\, as his waiting room fills each day with patients suffering the physical and mental effects of ever-increasing violence.  My Country\, My Country is a powerful mosaic of daily life in Iraq\, and according to the Village Voice it is “the most valuable piece of film to emerge about the war in all of its three years.” \n\n\n\nThis event is a collaboration with P.O.V. (the acclaimed independent non-fiction film series on PBS)\, and is presented with Bethlehem Neighbors for Peace and Women Against War.

SUMMARY:"Private" Film Screening with Activist George Rishmawi
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by real events\, documentary filmmaker Saverio Costanzo’s feature debut Private (2004) is a minimalist psychological drama about a Palestinian family of seven who are suddenly confronted with a volatile situation in their home that\, in many ways\, reflects the larger ongoing conflict between Palestine and Israel. Convincingly shot in a documentary style with a hand-held camera and a quick pace\, Costanzo created a unique occasion for both Israeli and Palestinian actors to work together\, and being an outsider himself\, he has worked to maintain a neutral standpoint while dramatizing the conflict. \n\n\n\nPresented with the Palestinian Rights Committee and Women Against War.

SUMMARY:"Sir! No Sir!" Screening
DESCRIPTION:David Zeiger’s new film Sir! No Sir! (2005) focuses on a forgotten 1960’s anti-war movement that altered the course of history. This movement didn’t take place on college campuses\, but in barracks and on aircraft carriers. It flourished in army stockades\, navy brigs and in the dingy towns that surround military bases. It penetrated elite military colleges like West Point\, and it spread through the battlefields of Vietnam. It was a movement no one expected\, least of all those in it. Hundreds went into hiding and thousands into exile. By 1971 it had\, in the words of one colonel\, infested the entire armed services. Yet today\, few people know about the GI movement against the war in Vietnam. Followed by a candlelight vigil in observance of International Peace Day. \n\n\n\nPresented with Bethlehem Neighbors For Peace and Women Against War.

SUMMARY:"Gram Parson: Fallen Angel" and Gram Parsons Tribute
DESCRIPTION:On September 19\, 1973\, the musician and heir to a million-dollar fortune died under the influence of drugs and alcohol near his favorite place – the Joshua Tree National Monument in the Californian desert. As the founder of the Flying Burrito Brothers\, a member of the hit-making legendary The Byrds\, an important influence on the Rolling Stones and the man who catapulted Emmylou Harris to fame\, Gram Parsons made music history in only a few years. Using rare footage of his performances\, Gram Parson: Fallen Angel (2004) director Gandulf Hennig shows why Gram Parsons has become a legend. Interviewees include Keith Richards\, Emmylou Harris\, Chris Hillman and “Road Mangler” Phil Kaufman. Plus a live musical tribute featuring Micheal Eck (guitar\, mandolin\, vocals)\, Jeff Sohn (bass)\, Sten Isachsen (lead guitar)\, Kevin Maul (pedal steel and dobro)\, Bob Girouard (drums) and guest vocalists Leigh Gibson\, Hayseed\, Mother Judge\, the Slaughter Jug All-Stars\, members of the Ramblin’ Jug Stompers and other local musicians performing their favorite Gram Parsons songs!

SUMMARY:Underground Gallery Presents "Unseen America NYS: Layers of Working Life"
DESCRIPTION:Working people are often defined solely by their occupation\, yet there is so much more to the story. Each of our lives is comprised of layer upon layer of people*\, places\, and events that have shaped who we are. In Unseen America NYS: Layers of Working Life\, we see images of family\, work\, community\, and self that reveal the true story of what it means to be a Registered Nurse\, Security Guard\, or Teacher\, among many other professions\, as seen through the eyes of the workers themselves. Unseen America NYS is an innovative arts project that gives workers the tools to document their own experience and describe their worlds with the assistance of professional photographers. The program embodies the transformative power of looking\, for a moment\, through another’s eyes. The goal is to amplify the creativity and vision of voices that often go unheard\, and to use artistic expression as an exercise in democracy with the integration of these voices into the larger social and cultural fabric of the nation. A collaboration of the Workforce Development Institute\, NYS AFL-CIO\, and Bread and Roses Cultural Project of 1199 SEIU. This exhibit will be on view from September 15th through October 14th\, 2006.

SUMMARY:"Salvador Allende" Premiere with Editor Fernando Leiva
DESCRIPTION:Salvador Allende’s brief rule as President of Chile from 1970 to 1973 is a central moment in the modern history of South America. However\, who was Salvador Allende? Was he a Marxist\, as many claim? Was he too civilized to govern in a world of international power politics? A moving biographical portrait\, Salvador Allende (2006) by filmmaker Patricio Guzman (The Battle of Chile) tells Allende’s story\, from his youth in Valparaiso and his early presidential campaigns\, to his bold nationalist reforms and his death during a violent rightist coup of September 11\, 1973. Introduced by Fernando Leiva\, editor of Democracy in Chile: The Legacy of September 11\, 1973. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nPresented with Action for Health in the Americas and the SUNY Albany Department of Latin American\, Caribbean and US Latino Studies.

SUMMARY:"Who is Bozo Texino" with Filmmaker Bill Daniel
DESCRIPTION:The secret history of hobo and railworker graffiti. Shot on freight trips across the western US over a period of 16 years\, Who is Bozo Texino? chronicles the search for the source of a ubiquitous rail graffiti–a simple sketch of a character with an infinity-shaped hat and the scrawled moniker\, “Bozo Texino”–a drawing seen on railcars for over 80 years. This spectacular travel adventure faithfully photographed in realistic black and white film at considerable risk from speeding freight trains and in secret hobo jungles in the dogged pursuit of the impossibly convoluted and heretofore untold history of the century-old folkloric practice known as hobo and railworker graffiti and chronicling the absurd quest for the true identity of railroading’s greatest artist will likely amuse and confound you in its sincere attempt to understand and preserve this mysterious artform.

SUMMARY:African Film Festival: "Malentendu Colonial (The Colonial Misunderstanding)" and "Nkan Mii (Something Else)"
DESCRIPTION:Malentendu Colonial (The Colonial Misunderstanding) directed by Jean-Marie Teno\, Cameroon\, 2004\, 78 minutes. The Colonial Misunderstanding is a bold exploration of Germany’s “African past”—specifically\, its attempts to colonize parts of Africa through religion and trade. Jean-Marie Teno looks at the role that missionaries played in laying the groundwork for colonialism in countries like Togo\, Cameroon\, Namibia and South Africa. The later crimes of the Nazi regime were actually anticipated by Germany’s genocidal war against the Herrero people in Namibia (1904-1907)\, which forcibly dispersed them and interned them in concentration camps. Through interviews with experts from Germany and Africa\, Teno paints a provocative picture of the relatively short but nevertheless horrific colonial history of Germany in Africa. Nkan Mii (Something Else) directed by Seke Somolu\, Nigeria\, 2003\, 16 minutes. A man in financial distress is left with few options and must turn to his family for help in this micro-cosmic look at middle-class life in Nigeria today. Co-Sponsored with the Art Department of RPI and by iEAR Presents!

SUMMARY:African Film Festival: "Niiwam" and "Safi La Petite Mere (Safi the Little Mother)"
DESCRIPTION:Based on a novel by Ousmane Sembene\, Niiwam (Clarence Thomas Delgando\, Senegal\, 1991\, 80 min) recounts the travails of a young couple’s attempt to save the life of their infant son\, who is gravely ill. Unable to find a cure in their village\, Thierno and his wife take him to a city hospital\, only to discover that the “blessings” of modern life has caused a degradation of even the most basic human relationships. The film avoids sentimentalization\, seeing its main characters as tragic examples of much larger\, social problems. As their struggle mounts\, Thierno takes a bus trip across the city\, only to be caught in a more desperate situation. Director Clarence Delgado\, who has worked as Sembene’s assistant\, effectively updates the quiet yet powerful style of Sembene’s own early work. The first-time feature director does not let the simplicity of his story detract from its harrowing and immediate call for humanity. Safi La Petite Mere (Safi the Little Mother) directed by Rasò Ganemtoré\, Burkina Faso\, 2004\, 30 minutes. When her mother died at birth\, Safi\, eight years\, was found with newborn in her arms\, fleeing her village where\, according to the tradition\, the baby must be sacrificed in order to be joined together to his mother and to thus draw aside the bad fate of the village. Having taken refuge in the large city\, Safi is found with a double problem of survival\, for both herself and her brother. Despite hardships however\, Safi finds solidarity and the compassion of a family. In addition\, the value of the market will also be transformed into a multitude of moms ready to give their milk to the baby. Co-Sponsored with the Art Department of RPI and by iEAR Presents!

SUMMARY:African Film Festival: "Le ballon d’or (The Golden Ball)" and "Be Kunko (Everybody's Problem)"
DESCRIPTION:The Golden Ball (Le ballon d’or) directed by Cheik Doukouré\, Guinea/France\, 1992\, 90 minutes. Cheik Doukouré’s second feature celebrates the powerful dream of becoming an African soccer star\, a dream that is pursued by kids in innumerable small villages who play in the dust with bare feet and footballs made of rags. A thoroughly engaging adventure story\, Le ballon follows Bandian\, a boy-wonder on the soccer field\, from his village in the bush through a series of hilarious and not so funny contretemps to superstardom in France. He’s assisted on his way by his hometown witch doctor; the young French doctor (Agnés Soral) who gifts him with a real football — the “golden” ball of the film’s title\, a dwarf (Aboubacar Koita) who offers him a brother’s love\, soccer star Karim (played by Salif Keita)\, and a canny businessman with an eye for the main chance. Be Kunko (Everybody’s Problem) directed by Cheick Fantamady Camara\, Guinea\, 2004\, 30 minutes. Bè Kunko depicts the spiral of violence that a group of teenagers fall into as they struggle to survive day-to-day in a Guinean refugee camp in the capital of Conakry. Little by little\, we discover the teenagers’ daily lives. John and Tom go from burglary to armed robbery\, whilst Satou and Dady end up in prostitution. As time goes by\, the gap widens between Tom\, who revels in an extreme violence\, and John\, who is violent because that’s the only way to survive\, but who nonetheless struggles to build himself a “normal” life again. Despite the love and attention she showers on them\, seventy-year-old Mémé\, their grandmother\, who is a refugee too\, can do nothing to save John\, Tom\, Satou and Dady from this infernal spiral.
