SUMMARY:"Notes Against the Threshold of Dreams" with Zevin Polzin
DESCRIPTION:Composer Zevin Polzin’s overnight concert\, Notes Against the Threshold of Dreams\, will be an exploration of the liminal zone between waking consciousness and dream. This process involves the sonification of states of consciousness into contrapuntal melodies that bend and warp over the course of sleep\, finally re-emerging as new melodies created by REM brainwaves. The audience is invited to bring blankets and pillows for falling asleep during the performance. In the morning\, participants share dreams with each other\, assisted by a dream facilitator Ione. \n\n\n\nPresented with the Deep Listening Institute.

SUMMARY:The Billy Bang Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Born Billy Walker\, Billy studied violin as a youngster growing up in New York’s South Bronx. Drafted into Vietnam\, he had a political awakening and returned to America to throw himself into the anti-war movement. When he began to play music again in 1971\, Bang experimented with saxophones\, but came back to the violin\, recognizing that this was where his technical facility lay. Bang became known as an associate of Sam Rivers and Frank Lowe\, playing an essential role in the celebrated Loft scene. In the early 70’s he formed his own group\, The Survival Ensemble\, and in 1977 co-founded the String Trio of New York. Associations with Sun Ra\, Don Cherry\, Marilyn Crispell and James Blood Ulmer were also productive. Like other musicians of his generation\, Bang refuses categories; from elegant free jazz and austere art music to playing on Bootsy Collin’s comeback album. Billy Bang (violin)\, Andrew Bemkey (piano)\, Todd Nicholson (bass)\, Newman Taylor Baker (drums). \n\n\n\nPresented with Women Against War. \n\n\n\nIn the Underground Gallery\, the opening of Unseen America: New York\, featuring photographs of working life by working hands\, a Bread and Roses cultural program of 1199 SEIU. Reception from 5-7.

SUMMARY:"Witches in Exile" with Filmmaker Allison Berg
DESCRIPTION:Africa deals with its internal pressure  in specifically African ways\, as revealed in Allison Berg’s lucid\, fascinating and wide-ranging study of how witch hunts break out at times of social and economic stress and about the camps in Ghana that provide a haven for accused women. \n\n\n\nIn Ghana\, women accused of witchcraft are torn from their families and banished to isolated “witch villages.” Witches in Exile (2004) filmmaker Allison Berg follows accused witches through their daily struggle to survive in the Kukuo Witches Camp in Northern Ghana. As government agencies attempt to abolish this age-old tradition\, these women find themselves caught between their society’s deeply rooted beliefs and its drive toward modernization. Witches in Exile captures a country at a dramatic and emotional crossroads. Potluck with the filmmaker precedes the screening.  \n\n\n\nCo-sponsored with the Experimental Television Center Presentation Funds program\, which is supported by the New York State Council on the Arts.

SUMMARY:"My Country\, My Country" with Filmmaker Laura Poitras
DESCRIPTION:Working Alone in Iraq over eighteen months\, My Country\, My Country (2006) Peabody Award-winning filmmaker Laura Poitras creates an extraordinarily intimate portrait of Iraqis living under US occupation. Her principal focus is Dr. Riyadh\, an Iraqi medical doctor\, father of six and Sunni Political candidate. An outspoken critic of the occupation\, he is equally passionate about the need to establish democracy in Iraq\, arguing that Sunni participation in the January 2005 elections is essential. Yet all around him\, Dr. Riyadh sees only chaos\, as his waiting room fills each day with patients suffering the physical and mental effects of ever-increasing violence.  My Country\, My Country is a powerful mosaic of daily life in Iraq\, and according to the Village Voice it is “the most valuable piece of film to emerge about the war in all of its three years.” \n\n\n\nThis event is a collaboration with P.O.V. (the acclaimed independent non-fiction film series on PBS)\, and is presented with Bethlehem Neighbors for Peace and Women Against War.

SUMMARY:"Private" Film Screening with Activist George Rishmawi
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by real events\, documentary filmmaker Saverio Costanzo’s feature debut Private (2004) is a minimalist psychological drama about a Palestinian family of seven who are suddenly confronted with a volatile situation in their home that\, in many ways\, reflects the larger ongoing conflict between Palestine and Israel. Convincingly shot in a documentary style with a hand-held camera and a quick pace\, Costanzo created a unique occasion for both Israeli and Palestinian actors to work together\, and being an outsider himself\, he has worked to maintain a neutral standpoint while dramatizing the conflict. \n\n\n\nPresented with the Palestinian Rights Committee and Women Against War.

SUMMARY:"Sir! No Sir!" Screening
DESCRIPTION:David Zeiger’s new film Sir! No Sir! (2005) focuses on a forgotten 1960’s anti-war movement that altered the course of history. This movement didn’t take place on college campuses\, but in barracks and on aircraft carriers. It flourished in army stockades\, navy brigs and in the dingy towns that surround military bases. It penetrated elite military colleges like West Point\, and it spread through the battlefields of Vietnam. It was a movement no one expected\, least of all those in it. Hundreds went into hiding and thousands into exile. By 1971 it had\, in the words of one colonel\, infested the entire armed services. Yet today\, few people know about the GI movement against the war in Vietnam. Followed by a candlelight vigil in observance of International Peace Day. \n\n\n\nPresented with Bethlehem Neighbors For Peace and Women Against War.

SUMMARY:"Gram Parson: Fallen Angel" and Gram Parsons Tribute
DESCRIPTION:On September 19\, 1973\, the musician and heir to a million-dollar fortune died under the influence of drugs and alcohol near his favorite place – the Joshua Tree National Monument in the Californian desert. Using rare footage of his performances\, Gram Parson: Fallen Angel (2004) director Gandulf Hennig shows why Gram Parsons has become a legend. Interviewees include Keith Richards\, Emmylou Harris\, Chris Hillman and “Road Mangler” Phil Kaufman. Plus a live musical tribute featuring Micheal Eck (guitar\, mandolin\, vocals)\, Jeff Sohn (bass)\, Sten Isachsen (lead guitar)\, Kevin Maul (pedal steel and dobro)\, Bob Girouard (drums) and guest vocalists Leigh Gibson\, Hayseed\, Mother Judge\, the Slaughter Jug All-Stars\, members of the Ramblin’ Jug Stompers and other local musicians performing their favorite Gram Parsons songs!

SUMMARY:Underground Gallery Presents "Unseen America NYS: Layers of Working Life"
DESCRIPTION:Working people are often defined solely by their occupation\, yet there is so much more to the story. Each of our lives is comprised of layer upon layer of people*\, places\, and events that have shaped who we are. In Unseen America NYS: Layers of Working Life\, we see images of family\, work\, community\, and self that reveal the true story of what it means to be a Registered Nurse\, Security Guard\, or Teacher\, among many other professions\, as seen through the eyes of the workers themselves. Unseen America NYS is an innovative arts project that gives workers the tools to document their own experience and describe their worlds with the assistance of professional photographers. The program embodies the transformative power of looking\, for a moment\, through another’s eyes. The goal is to amplify the creativity and vision of voices that often go unheard\, and to use artistic expression as an exercise in democracy with the integration of these voices into the larger social and cultural fabric of the nation. A collaboration of the Workforce Development Institute\, NYS AFL-CIO\, and Bread and Roses Cultural Project of 1199 SEIU. This exhibit will be on view from September 15th through October 14th\, 2006.

SUMMARY:"Salvador Allende" Premiere with Editor Fernando Leiva
DESCRIPTION:Salvador Allende’s brief rule as President of Chile from 1970 to 1973 is a central moment in the modern history of South America. However\, who was Salvador Allende? Was he a Marxist\, as many claim? Was he too civilized to govern in a world of international power politics? A moving biographical portrait\, Salvador Allende (2006) by filmmaker Patricio Guzman (The Battle of Chile) tells Allende’s story\, from his youth in Valparaiso and his early presidential campaigns\, to his bold nationalist reforms and his death during a violent rightist coup of September 11\, 1973. Introduced by Fernando Leiva\, editor of Democracy in Chile: The Legacy of September 11\, 1973. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nPresented with Action for Health in the Americas and the SUNY Albany Department of Latin American\, Caribbean and US Latino Studies.
