SUMMARY:"Shooting Under Fire" Screening
DESCRIPTION:In Shooting Under Fire (2005)\, director Sacha Mirzoeff highlights the individuals who risk their lives to bring us the pictures from the front line.  Part of the Margaret Mead Film & Video Festival. Co-sponsored by iEAR Presents! \n\n\n\nIn a part of the world where perspective dictates politics\, it’s critical for the photojournalist to capture stories without prejudice or bias. This shocking and revealing film follows Reinhard Krause\, the head of the Reuters photo bureau in Israel\, as he manages a team of Jewish and Arab photographers\, helping them capture compelling stills that are persuasive but balanced\, dramatic but not incendiary. \n\n\n\nUsing a vivid mesh of still and moving images\, filmmaker Sacha Mirzoeff assembles a portrait of the dangerous lives of the photographers who patrol the frontlines of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. As they visit the detritus left after deadly firefights and bus bombings\, their public pictures take a private toll. In sum\, it’s the macabre consequence of being the world’s window into conflict and tragedy.

SUMMARY:Be The Media! Workshop With Misha Rabinovich: What Is Free and Open Source Software?
DESCRIPTION:One of the most exciting trends in media today is the open source software revolution. Developers around the world are collaborating to fight the plague of bloated\, buggy and overpriced corporate software to come up with free alternatives. In this four hour workshop\, the history\, politics\, and practical applications of open source software and free software will be discussed\, de-mystified and looked at up close. Topics will include: what is open source\, what kinds of open source licenses are circulating and how they differ\, how open source software affects the commercial software world\, and what this means for businesses and individuals using open source software. A variety of open source software applications will be demonstrated that are practical for media makers as well as everyday use. \n\n\n\nMisha Rabinovich graduated from RPI with a B.S. in Electronic Arts in 2004. From 2004-2006 he worked in New York in the NBC Universal interactive marketing department focusing on Internet delivered video. In 2006 he returned to Troy\, and co-founded Open Box Technologies\, a business focusing on extending the reach of digital media. OBT develops cross-platform media players coupled with a web-based media publishing portal\, leveraging open source\, as well as commercial software. OBT is currently based in Troy\, NY and is working towards a public beta release of their new software in January 2007.

SUMMARY:Be The Media! Workshop With John Feldman: Video - From Idea to Game Plan
DESCRIPTION:So you’ve got a great idea for a film you’d like to make. Now what? Whether your idea is for fiction\, documentary\, educational\, experimental\, or a combination of all of the above\, this workshop will help you (1) articulate your idea in words so that you can raise money\, get partners\, and get started\, and (2) develop a “game plan” of what to do next\, and next\, and next… Regardless of how brilliant your idea is\, you must write it down and\, depending on the genre\, there are set ways to do this. This workshop will cover different types of proposals\, treatments\, pitches\, synopses\, and scripts. We will also cover how to protect your idea and touch on production schedules and budgets. To get the most out of the workshop\, please come with an idea you’d like to develop and a notebook. By the end of the four hours you’ll know what to do next. \n\n\n\nJohn Feldman has been making films and writing scripts\, treatments\, proposals and budgets for over thirty years and he still loves it all! Many of his ideas have been realized as films and videos\, several of these have won prestigious festival awards. He has made four independent dramatic features and many documentaries\, educational\, and experimental films. Feldman teaches digital workshops at various universities and high schools in the US and overseas. His production company\, Hummingbird Films\, is located in Spencertown\, NY and serves clients around the world.

SUMMARY:Premiere of "Kabul Transit" with Filmmaker David Edwards
DESCRIPTION:Kabul Transit is a documentary that explores the soul of a city devastated by nearly three decades of war. The film follows city residents in the course of their daily lives and listens to their stories of the past and their hopes for the future. The central character of Kabul Transit (2006) is the city itself – neighborhoods leveled by rockets\, traditional mud brick homes next to modern glass towers\, gleaming SUVs caught in traffic jams with rebuilt taxis. Kabul Transit is about the spirit\, as much as it is about the problems of the city. It is about the black humor and sardonic good sense that keep people attuned to the realities of their lives\, even as politicians lay the groundwork for battles yet to come. Presented with Women Against War.

SUMMARY:Talking Points + Talking Ponies with Media Artist Ben Coonley
DESCRIPTION:Multi-disciplinary artist Ben Coonley presents a selection of underground art videos\, Internet curiosities\, and avant – PowerPoint performances that defy the logic of corporate aesthetics in favor of an ecstatic self-reflexive personal vision. In his Trick Pony videos\, singing hobby-horses teach the audience how to play football\, dance the Texas Two-Step\, and explain the logic of global currency markets. In a series of new performance art pieces created entirely in PowerPoint\, the ubiquitous graphs and bulleted text of Microsoft Office give way to wizard cats and hallucinatory technological trickery.

SUMMARY:"Independent America" Premiere with Author Michael Shuman
DESCRIPTION:The author of The Small-Mart Revolution and Going Local introduces a screening of a thought-provoking new documentary by Hanson Hosein\, Independent America: The Two Lane Search for Mom & Pop (2005)\, which uncovers the growing opposition to big box retail across the U.S. and the often desperate fight being waged by independent retailers to stay alive. Independent America is an entertaining account of the filmmakers’ expedition through 32 states as they look for an America unchained by corporate retail. Self-imposed road rules bar them from major highways and corporate retail—traveling on alternative roads\, the duo can only do business with Mom & Pop. SUMMARY:"The Net" Premiere With Political Theorist Langdon Winner
DESCRIPTION:More of a film essay (of the type pioneered by Orson Welles and Chris Marker) than a standard documentary\, German filmmaker Lutz Dammbeck’s The Net: The Unabomber\, the LSD and the Internet 2003) begins with the typical format and structure of a nonfiction film\, and a single subject (the life and times of mail bomber Ted Kaczynski). From the thematic springboard\, Dammbeck branches out omniddirectionally segueing into a series of thematic riffs and variants on such marginally-related subjects as: the history of cyberspace\, terrorism\, utopian ideals\, LSD\, the Central Intelligence Agency\, and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1962) author Ken Kesey and his Merry Pranksters. The film will be followed by an audience Q&A led by Langdon Winner\, a unabomber scholar. He has authored Autonomous Technology (a study of the idea of technology-out-of-control in modern social thought)\, The Whale and The Reactor: A Search for Limits in an Age of High Technology and is the editor of Democracy in a Technological Society. Presented with the Department of Science and Technology Studies at RPI.

SUMMARY:"Men on the Edge: Fishermen's Diary\," Human Rights Watch Traveling Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:A documentary by Israeli filmmakers Avner Faingulernt and Macabit Abramzon Men on the Edge: Fishermen’s Diary (2005) is set on an isolated and abandoned beach at the border between Gaza and Israel. Here\, against all odds\, Israeli and Palestinian fishermen lived and fished together from 1999 to 2003. The Palestinians were teaching the Israelis ancient fishing techniques passed down from one generation to the next. In turn\, the Israelis\, by their presence\, were enabling the Palestinians to continue to fish in Israeli waters. The film intimately and beautifully documents these four crucial years in the lives of this eclectic group of men from warring cultures. These men are brought together by their shared work and the natural threats they face each day in the open sea. Ultimately\, the greatest obstacle the fishermen face is not the harshness of nature\, but the pressures of politics and the fighting surrounding their enclave. Part of the Human Rights Watch Traveling Festival which will have screenings on November 14th\, 15th\, and 16th\, 2006. \n\n\n\nThe Human Rights Watch Traveling Film Festival is presented with the Department of the Arts at RPI and Women Against War.
