SUMMARY:New York State Strategy Session for the Future of Community Media & Media Justice
DESCRIPTION:As part of the all day event interAct Troy! (an all day skill share and community celebration)\, the Alliance for Community Media NYS Chapter\, NY Media Alliance\, and saveaccess.org invite you to New York State Strategy Session for the Future of Community Media & Media Justice featuring Betty Yu (Manhattan Neighborhood Network)\, Dee Dee Halleck (PPTV/Deep Dish TV)\, George Stoney (“Father of Community TV”)\, Michael Eisenmenger (SaveAccess.org)\, and Steve Pierce (NY Media Alliance). [A preliminary strategy session will take place Friday\, May 11th from 2-6pm.] \n\n\n\nAs you may know\, there is pending New York statewide franchise legislation that could negatively impact our local communities\, Community Access TV and our public interest media. At the end of the 2006\, as legislation stalled in Washington\, phone companies started to pass statewide video franchises that would undermine Public\, Educational and Governmental (PEG) Access TV and “economically redline” low-income and rural communities. In more than twenty states\, statewide franchise legislation have been adopted or proposed\, having the same negative impact on PEG Access TV. Then early this year\, in another devastating blow to PEG Access\, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) took a favorable position to the telephone companies\, supporting the elimination of local franchises and local control of PEG Access. \n\n\n\nNew York State\, like many other states\, is facing a fast-tracked video franchise bill that could eliminate or weaken local municipal control of the “public rights of way”and PEG Access TV. Unlike other states where franchise legislation is being written almost entirely by the telephone companies to suit their own interests\, the NY ‘Omnibus Telecommunications Act’ (A3980-B) has a broadband initiative that is being supported by the Communications Workers of America (CWA) and several other public interest groups. The bill is long way from it’s final form and could change radically once cable and telephone companies become more involved. \n\n\n\nWe must come together to ensure that this legislation protects our interests as local residents\, PEG Access producers and community media activists to ensure the future of our communities’ media tools!

SUMMARY:Be The Media! Workshop with Andrew Lynn: Beyond You - How to Build Your Own Internet TV Channel
DESCRIPTION:Do you want to deliver your message to the world but don’t know how or even what tools you need? You’ll be relieved to know a lot of the work has been done for you. You just need to plug it in. Participants will learn about resources available for aspiring Internet TV producers and the thriving online viewing community. Going way beyond the latest YouTube gem\, we’ll discuss why (or why not) you should start vlogging (video blogging)\, demonstrate techniques for compression\, syndication\, promotion and offer resources to learn more. Participants will have a chance to create their own syndicated Internet video channel and begin the promotional process. You supply the ideas! Intended for people with some computer experience\, video experience is helpful but not necessary. Participants with laptop computers are encouraged to bring them. If you don’t have a laptop\, but have videos you’d like to post on your new Internet TV channel\, bring them on CD or DVD as data files. PLUS: Brainstorm directly following the session with local community media activists interested in building regional capacity for various Internet distribution projects. \n\n\n\nAndrew Lynn is an artist\, documentarian\, and educator living in Brooklyn\, NY. Currently on staff at Manhattan Neighborhood Network Youth Channel where he develops media literacy curricula and organizes an online video distribution network — he has co-produced documentaries including Independent Media in a Time of War\, Still We Ride\, and is now working on the ongoing series My Survival Kit. www.bbreathingplanet.net

SUMMARY:Scott Ritter: The Crisis in the U.S.-Iran Relations
DESCRIPTION:William Scott Ritter\, Jr. is most noted for being a critic of United States foreign policy in the Middle East following his experiences as a United Nations weapons inspector in Iraq. Prior to the U.S. invasion in March 2003\, Rutter repeatedly stated that Iraq possessed no weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) and was widely condemned for it. Now much of his criticism of U.S. policy has been vindicated. His new book\, Target Iran: The Truth About the White House’s Plans for Regime Change (2006)\, examines the Bush administration’s regime-change policy and the potential of Iran to threaten U.S. national security interests. “The most important thing to know about Scott Ritter the man\, is that he was right\,” Seymour Hersh states. “He told us again and again in 2002 and early 2003\, as President George Bush and Prime Minister Tony Blair prepared for war in Iraq\, that there were no weapons.” \n\n\n\nPresented by the Iran Working Group of Upper Hudson Peace Action. Co-sponsor: Women Against War\, the Social Justice Center\, Troy Peace Action\, Schenectady Neighbors for Peace\, Saratoga Peace Alliance\, Pine Hill Neighbors for Peace\, and Veterans for Peace.

SUMMARY:Prison Reform and Filmmaking
DESCRIPTION:Last time the Sanctuary InfoShop met\, filmmaker Melis Birder was our special guest. Because of our event\, several people from our area have become involved in the production of her documentary The Visitors. This time\, I’d like to introduce you to two special people involved in criminal justice and prison reform work\, one of whom is also making a film. Cheryl Kates is a lawyer in private practice\, specializing in parole appeals and other related prisoner legal issues. Through her work she met filmmaker Stefania Zamparelli who has embarked on a project about clemency. Ms Kates is interested in the possibility the project will help some of her clients. Co-ordinated by Prison Action Network. \n\n\n\nStefania Zamparelli writes:\n\n\n\nI incorporated Community Awareness Through Arts Inc.\, which is a non-profit with a 501 (c) (3) status. Clemency Now! Is the first project for the organization; in the beginning it will focus on prisoners in the New York state. The project is intended to raise public opinion and to create grounds for legal clemency for those inmates who are guilty but have a good conduct record and have already served at least half of their sentence. Ideally it would be great to find inmates who are innocent or whose cases show a lack of evidence. My intention is to meet personally the available inmates after getting a prison permit (?!)\, which would allow me to document with camera and camcorder their particular stories. I’m also planning to interview the inmates’ relatives\, their attorneys and possible witnesses. \n\n\n\nWhy am I doing this? I always had a “rebellious” nature with an inclination towards social and political issues and I’m finally ready to give some more depth to my work. In my first 15 years in NY (I left Italy in 1991) I had to battle to survive without a green card; It took me 10 years to get it\, and in the end I accomplished it as an Alien of Extraordinary Ability (please feel free to laugh\, this is the real title!!!)

SUMMARY:Be The Media! Workshop with Jesse Stiles: Sound On Location
DESCRIPTION:Making high-quality sound recordings in remote locations is an essential part of nearly every form of media production. The production of film\, video\, radio podcasts\, videblogs\, etc. all involve making sound recordings in a wide variety of environments. The quality and intelligibility of your soundtrack is critical in conveying your message and placing your audience “in the scene.” In this workshop we will introduce you to the essential tools of on-location sound recording (or “field recording”)\, go over important techniques to improve the quality of your sound recordings\, and we take microphones to the streets of Troy to put our skills into practice. HM IMG will be providing basic sound recording equipment for the workshop. Bring your own mics\, take recorders\, DAT recorders\, solid state recorders\, or video cameras to the workshop and we’ll check them out to see how they can be put to their best use for sound-recording. Our approach will emphasize field recording on a budget. \n\n\n\nJesse Stiles is a local musician\, sound designer\, and sound engineer. He has recently produced sonic environments for The Field Museum where he used remote sound recordings to sculpt the sound world of woolly mammoths in ancient America. He is currently the sound designer and senior sound editor for an IMAX film being produced by Nanotoon Entertainment. Stiles also makes use of field recordings in his music practice.

This shocking and revealing film follows Reinhard Krause\, the head of the Reuters photo bureau in Israel\, as he manages a team of Jewish and Arab photographers\, helping them capture compelling stills that are persuasive but balanced\, dramatic but not incendiary. \n\n\n\nUsing a vivid mesh of still and moving images\, filmmaker Sacha Mirzoeff assembles a portrait of the dangerous lives of the photographers who patrol the frontlines of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. As they visit the detritus left after deadly firefights and bus bombings\, their public pictures take a private toll. In sum\, it’s the macabre consequence of being the world’s window into conflict and tragedy.
