SUMMARY:Lost Film Fest with Scott Belbin
DESCRIPTION:A laugh-riot performance with equal emphasis on both “laugh” and “riot.” The Lost Film Fest focuses on pranks vs. corporations and government institutions. You’ll love the punk rock urgency of the Lost Film Fest and its celebration of media archaeology and illegal art. A traveling multimedia spectacle incorporating live performance and video\, it’s a truly independent\, anti-authoritarian\, anti-corporate grassroots DIY media extravaganza. Scott Belbin travels the globe with the Fest telling stories and spinning movies using a video projector\, dvd player\, and backpack filled with goodies. The roadshow incorporates a sexy\, smash-it-up\, radical anti-capitalist\, anti-globalization perspective. The Lost Film Fest features scathing and hilarious social commentary in the form of narrative shorts\, documented pranks\, hot amateur protest footage\, and video re-mixes.

SUMMARY:Underground Gallery: "Unseenamerica NYS: Layers of Working Life" (9/14/07 - 10/14/07)
DESCRIPTION:Working people are often defined solely by their occupation\, yet there is so much more to the story. Each of our lives is comprised of layer upon layer of people\, places\, and events that have shaped who we are. In Unseen America NYS: Layers of Working Life\, we see images of family\, work\, community\, and self that reveal the true story of what it means to be a registered nurse\, a security guard\, or teacher\, among many other professions\, as seen through the eyes of the workers themselves. Unseen America NYS is an innovative arts project that gives workers the tools to document their own experience and describe their worlds with the assistance of professional photographers. The program embodies the transformative power of looking\, for a moment\, through another’s eyes. The goal is to amplify the creativity and vision of voices that often go unheard\, and to use artistic expression as an exercise in democracy with the integration of these voices into the larger social and cultural fabric of the nation. The exhibition runs from September 14th through October 14th\, 2007. \n\n\n\nA collaboration of the Workforce Development Institute\, NYS AFL-CIO\, and Bread and Roses Cultural Project of 1199 SEIU.

Originally proposed by Vonn New with the assistance of technical director Scot Gresham-Lancaster\, the three concerts are the proof of concept. Via the internet using Skype\, musicians form new ensembles\, improvise\, plan and rehearse in audio conferences up to ten players at a time. The concerts will feature various world premieres and a wide array of compositions including Pauline Oliveros’ famous Worldwide Tuning Meditation.  \n\n\n\nCo-sponsored by the Deep Listening Institute. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAmbient Sins Brigitte Meyer\, cello (Switzerland) & Heloise Gold\, (US) \n\n\n\nThe Worldwide Tuning Meditation by Pauline Oliveros (US) –for company and audience \n\n\n\nMouth-piece Kristin Norderval\, voice & electronics (NYC/Norway)\, Viv Corringham\, voice (UK)\, Monique Buzzarté\, trombone (NYC) \n\n\n\nUntitled (quartet variations on a silent theme) Seth Cluett\, amplified objects (US)\, Anne Bourne\, cello and voice (Canada)\, Kenta Nagai\, shamisen (NYC)\, Scott Smallwood laptop (US) \n\n\n\nXylo 2 by Al Margolis (US) for large ensemble \n\n\n\nSpiral Tap by Sarah Weaver (US) – ensemble \n\n\n\nPatterns of Living and Sounding by Marc Jensen (US) for large ensemble \n\n\n\nthe water of the ocean of sky –Will Swofford\, electronics (NYC)\, Brigitte Meyer\, cello (Switzerland)\, and Anne Bourne\, cello (Canada) \n\n\n\nHMMM by Kathy Kennedy (Canada)–large ensemble \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe New York State Music Fund was created when the New York State Attorney General’s Office resolved investigations against major record companies that had violated state and federal laws prohibiting “pay for play” (also called “payola”). The settlement agreement stipulated that funds paid by music businesses would support music education and appreciation for the benefit of New York State residents. The Attorney General’s Office enlisted the services of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors\, one of the nation’s largest and most experienced philanthropy services\, to develop and manage the grant program.

SUMMARY:New York State Strategy Session for the Future of Community Media & Media Justice
DESCRIPTION:As part of the all day event interAct Troy! (an all day skill share and community celebration)\, the Alliance for Community Media NYS Chapter\, NY Media Alliance\, and saveaccess.org invite you to New York State Strategy Session for the Future of Community Media & Media Justice featuring Betty Yu (Manhattan Neighborhood Network)\, Dee Dee Halleck (PPTV/Deep Dish TV)\, George Stoney (“Father of Community TV”)\, Michael Eisenmenger (SaveAccess.org)\, and Steve Pierce (NY Media Alliance). [A preliminary strategy session will take place Friday\, May 11th from 2-6pm.] \n\n\n\nAs you may know\, there is pending New York statewide franchise legislation that could negatively impact our local communities\, Community Access TV and our public interest media. At the end of the 2006\, as legislation stalled in Washington\, phone companies started to pass statewide video franchises that would undermine Public\, Educational and Governmental (PEG) Access TV and “economically redline” low-income and rural communities. In more than twenty states\, statewide franchise legislation have been adopted or proposed\, having the same negative impact on PEG Access TV. Then early this year\, in another devastating blow to PEG Access\, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) took a favorable position to the telephone companies\, supporting the elimination of local franchises and local control of PEG Access. \n\n\n\nNew York State\, like many other states\, is facing a fast-tracked video franchise bill that could eliminate or weaken local municipal control of the “public rights of way”and PEG Access TV. Unlike other states where franchise legislation is being written almost entirely by the telephone companies to suit their own interests\, the NY ‘Omnibus Telecommunications Act’ (A3980-B) has a broadband initiative that is being supported by the Communications Workers of America (CWA) and several other public interest groups. The bill is long way from it’s final form and could change radically once cable and telephone companies become more involved. \n\n\n\nWe must come together to ensure that this legislation protects our interests as local residents\, PEG Access producers and community media activists to ensure the future of our communities’ media tools!

SUMMARY:Be The Media! Workshop with Andrew Lynn: Beyond You - How to Build Your Own Internet TV Channel
DESCRIPTION:Do you want to deliver your message to the world but don’t know how or even what tools you need? You’ll be relieved to know a lot of the work has been done for you. You just need to plug it in. Participants will learn about resources available for aspiring Internet TV producers and the thriving online viewing community. Going way beyond the latest YouTube gem\, we’ll discuss why (or why not) you should start vlogging (video blogging)\, demonstrate techniques for compression\, syndication\, promotion and offer resources to learn more. Participants will have a chance to create their own syndicated Internet video channel and begin the promotional process. You supply the ideas! Intended for people with some computer experience\, video experience is helpful but not necessary. Participants with laptop computers are encouraged to bring them. If you don’t have a laptop\, but have videos you’d like to post on your new Internet TV channel\, bring them on CD or DVD as data files. PLUS: Brainstorm directly following the session with local community media activists interested in building regional capacity for various Internet distribution projects. \n\n\n\nAndrew Lynn is an artist\, documentarian\, and educator living in Brooklyn\, NY. Currently on staff at Manhattan Neighborhood Network Youth Channel where he develops media literacy curricula and organizes an online video distribution network — he has co-produced documentaries including Independent Media in a Time of War\, Still We Ride\, and is now working on the ongoing series My Survival Kit. www.bbreathingplanet.net
