SUMMARY:Army of None
DESCRIPTION:With the Army of None Project\, David Solnit aims to counter military recruitment\, end war\, and build a better world. He is traveling across the United States to share his knowledge and experience with the counter-recruitment movement\, one of the fastest-growing\, most strategic forms of community organizing. \n\n\n\nThe military recruitment complex insinuates itself into the daily lives of children and youth in ways of which most people are not aware. Millions of dollars are poured into advanced marketing strategies; recruiters walk freely into classrooms with false promises of a way out of poverty. \n\n\n\nThe Army of None Project argues that childhood should be free of military influence and the constant pressure to enlist. This is not just a way to protect our most valuable national resource– children; it is an effective way to take local action to provide equal opportunity and youth leadership training for those who bear the burden of fighting in Iraq and beyond. \n\n\n\nCo-sponsored by Women Against War and Bethlehem Neighbors for Peace.

SUMMARY:"Mission Accomplished"\, 10/15 - 11/14/07
DESCRIPTION:A response to President Bush’s statement made early in the Iraq War\, Christine Heller’s installation\, Mission Accomplished is layered with the grey Muslim figures tangled in wire and fencing. Limp and skeletal\, the figures are shells\, souls\, and shrouds. Their life is gone. They have faded from existence\, faded from our consciousness\, a reminder of lost identity and lost life. These figures represent American soldiers. Iraqi citizens\, prisoners at Guantanamo\, or those tortured at Abu Ghraib. \n\n\n\nSince 2005\, Christine Heller’s installations have focused on the devastating physical and emotional turmoil of the Iraq War including America Comes Home\, about the ravaged lives of American Soldiers\, In Our Name\, about Iraqi children in the war\, and Mission Accomplished\, about the continuing struggle in Iraq.

SUMMARY:Haale
DESCRIPTION:Haale\, vocals\, guitarMatt Kilmer\, percussionChris Hoffman\, cello \n\n\n\nHaale evokes both the spiritual and traditional culture of her parents’ homeland of Iran and the energy of psychedelic rock and roll from the sounds of New York City\, where she was born. Her music and her message are formed by the powerful combination of these influences\, invoking both a swaying trance and a rock sensibility she describes as “psychedelic Sufi trance rock.” \n\n\n\nHaale never strays far from the cultural and mystical influences of her Persian roots\, but she’s no throwback to the New Age movement. Haale’s music is a new kind of global rock\, and while some try to find the neat stylistic pigeonhole for her\, the best response is to go along with her\, wherever that may lead. \n\n\n\nCo-sponsored by Women Against War.

SUMMARY:Author Reese Erlich
DESCRIPTION:Will the United States and Iran Find Themselves at War? In The Iran Agenda: The Real Story of U.S. Policy and the Middle East Crisis (Poli Point Press\, 2007)\, author and journalist Reese Erlich shows how the U.S. government is planning to subvert the Iranian government and lie about it to the American people. He traces the troubled history between the two countries that has led to the current showdown over nuclear technology and he reports from Iran and northern Iraq to uncover details of how the U.S. has funded ethnic minorities to carry out guerrilla raids and terrorist bombings inside Iran. Potluck at 6 pm and talk at 7 pm. \n\n\n\nIn his previous book\, the best-selling Target Iraq: What the News Media Didn’t Tell You (co-authored with Norman Solomon\, 2003)\, Erlich presciently exposes the harsh realities and consequences of the run-up to the Iraq War and the media’s failure to present the full spectrum of the facts to the public. \n\n\n\nReese Erlich has been a working journalist for 40 years– starting as a staff writer and research editor for Ramparts\, an investigative reporting magazine published in San Francisco from 1963 to 1975. Today he works as a freelance reporter\, regularly filing print and broadcast stories for the Canadian and Australian Broadcasting Corporations\, Radio Deutsche Welle and National Public Radio. His articles appear in the San Francisco Chronicle\, St. Petersburg Times and the Dallas Morning News. His television documentaries have aired on PBS stations nationwide. \n\n\n\nProduced by the Iran Working Group of Upper Hudson Peace Action and co-sponsored by Women Against War and Bethlehem Neighbors for Peace.

SUMMARY:Underground Gallery: "Unseenamerica NYS: Layers of Working Life" (9/14/07 - 10/14/07)
DESCRIPTION:Working people are often defined solely by their occupation\, yet there is so much more to the story. Each of our lives is comprised of layer upon layer of people\, places\, and events that have shaped who we are. In Unseen America NYS: Layers of Working Life\, we see images of family\, work\, community\, and self that reveal the true story of what it means to be a registered nurse\, a security guard\, or teacher\, among many other professions\, as seen through the eyes of the workers themselves. Unseen America NYS is an innovative arts project that gives workers the tools to document their own experience and describe their worlds with the assistance of professional photographers. The program embodies the transformative power of looking\, for a moment\, through another’s eyes. The goal is to amplify the creativity and vision of voices that often go unheard\, and to use artistic expression as an exercise in democracy with the integration of these voices into the larger social and cultural fabric of the nation. The exhibition runs from September 14th through October 14th\, 2007. \n\n\n\nA collaboration of the Workforce Development Institute\, NYS AFL-CIO\, and Bread and Roses Cultural Project of 1199 SEIU.

The Attorney General’s Office enlisted the services of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors\, one of the nation’s largest and most experienced philanthropy services\, to develop and manage the grant program.

SUMMARY:New York State Strategy Session for the Future of Community Media & Media Justice
DESCRIPTION:As part of the all day event interAct Troy! (an all day skill share and community celebration)\, the Alliance for Community Media NYS Chapter\, NY Media Alliance\, and saveaccess.org invite you to New York State Strategy Session for the Future of Community Media & Media Justice featuring Betty Yu (Manhattan Neighborhood Network)\, Dee Dee Halleck (PPTV/Deep Dish TV)\, George Stoney (“Father of Community TV”)\, Michael Eisenmenger (SaveAccess.org)\, and Steve Pierce (NY Media Alliance). [A preliminary strategy session will take place Friday\, May 11th from 2-6pm.] \n\n\n\nAs you may know\, there is pending New York statewide franchise legislation that could negatively impact our local communities\, Community Access TV and our public interest media. At the end of the 2006\, as legislation stalled in Washington\, phone companies started to pass statewide video franchises that would undermine Public\, Educational and Governmental (PEG) Access TV and “economically redline” low-income and rural communities. In more than twenty states\, statewide franchise legislation have been adopted or proposed\, having the same negative impact on PEG Access TV. Then early this year\, in another devastating blow to PEG Access\, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) took a favorable position to the telephone companies\, supporting the elimination of local franchises and local control of PEG Access. \n\n\n\nNew York State\, like many other states\, is facing a fast-tracked video franchise bill that could eliminate or weaken local municipal control of the “public rights of way”and PEG Access TV. Unlike other states where franchise legislation is being written almost entirely by the telephone companies to suit their own interests\, the NY ‘Omnibus Telecommunications Act’ (A3980-B) has a broadband initiative that is being supported by the Communications Workers of America (CWA) and several other public interest groups. The bill is long way from it’s final form and could change radically once cable and telephone companies become more involved. \n\n\n\nWe must come together to ensure that this legislation protects our interests as local residents\, PEG Access producers and community media activists to ensure the future of our communities’ media tools!
