SUMMARY:"From Mills River to Babylon and Back" with Filmmaker Joe Stillman and IVAW co-founder Jimmy Massey
DESCRIPTION:The Sanctuary for Independent Media and Bethlehem Neighbors for Peace welcome filmmaker Joe Stillman and Iraq Veterans Against the War co-founder Jimmy Massey for a screening of the new documentary\, From Mills River to Babylon and Back… The Jimmy Massey Story. This film chronicles the life of former Staff Sergeant Jimmy Massey and examines the political\, legal\, moral\, and human rights implications of the war. Massey\, a 12-year Marine veteran\, served in Iraq in 2003. He witnessed and in some cases participated in the killing of innocent civilians. The Iraqis were just doing their normal routines he says\, and they were getting blasted for it. He began to speak out to his superiors and was eventually diagnosed with depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. He won an honorable discharge in December 2003. \n\n\n\nThis film chronicles the life of Jimmy Massey and examines the political\, legal\, moral\, and human rights implications of the war. It was shot in fourteen different states from 2005-2009.  \n\n\n\nThe documentary features Martin Sheen (actor/human rights activist)\, Ramsey Clark (former U.S. Attorney General)\, Cindy Sheehan (founder of the Gold Star Families)\, Congressman Dennis Kucinich \, Father Roy Bourgeois (founder of the School of the Americas Watch)\, former UN weapons inspector Scott Ritter\, Kelley Dougherty (Executive Director of Iraq Veterans Against the War)\, Col. (Ret.) Ann Wright\, Dr. Ed Tick (post-traumatic stress disorder expert)\, and Congresswoman Maxine Waters. \n\n\n\nThe film shows Jimmy’s early life and the tragic death of his father\, his decision to enlist in the marines due to economic conscript\, illicit recruiting tactics that target single parent families by recruiters (Massey was a Marine recruiter)\, weapons of mass deception\, depleted uranium use and its effects on soldiers and civilians\, the administration’s rush to war and taking back our democracy are some of the topics which are discussed in the documentary. \n\n\n\n“Jimmy Massey has paid an incredible price to tell the truth about the real war in Iraq but he would do it again in a heartbeat. I believe it’s particularly important for parents and young people especially\, to understand the tactics military recruiters will use to fill their quotas at the expense of the youth in our communities. This project has opened my eyes to many of the facts that Jimmy has raised and the tragedy of an ongoing war that didn’t have to be fought. I sadly learned\, for instance\, that the U.S. has dropped massive amounts of depleted uranium\, used in ammunition and bombs\, in Iraq and Afghanistan since the first Gulf War and that it is presently having disastrous effects on our returning military personnel and especially on the civilian populations in those countries.  This documentary offers a critical perspective by a veteran which helps the world understand the real implications of what our soldiers are up against in Iraq and Afghanistan and how those conflicts have affected innocent civilians.” – Joseph C. Stillman Producer/Director

SUMMARY:Underground Gallery Exhibition by Nina Berman: "Evidence and Fantasy - Militarism in American Life"
DESCRIPTION:Nina Berman is an award-winning documentary photographer based in New York City\, widely publicized and exhibited\, with a primary interest in the American political and social landscape. Her work examines the influence of war and militarism on American life at this time in our history when so many resources\, both human and material\, are dedicated to military pursuit. Many of the soldiers Nina met said they thought it would be fun\, but their experiences told a different story. She became interested in how as a culture we visualize and fantasize war and what role the burgeoning homeland security state plays in the creation and dissemination of these fantasies. This exhibition featured her series Homeland\, Purple Hearts\, and Marine Weddings. The exhibition will be on view from September 26th through December 12th\, 2009.

SUMMARY:Kombucha Tea Party\, Screening of "Where Are You Go\," and Live Music
DESCRIPTION:The Sanctuary kicks off its Fall 2009 season with a permaculture project opening with tea party\, a great new film\, and three live bands! \n\n\n\nBeginning at 6 PM\, a Kombucha tea party will celebrate the opening of our new outdoor Vertical Mushroom Garden\, a permaculture exhibit designed by Sara Worden and installed with help from Jack Magai. At 7 PM there will be a screening of Where Are You Go\, a new film from directors Benny Zenga and Brian Vernor about their four-month\, 7\,000 mile bicycle adventure between Cairo and Cape Town with the Tour d’Afrique\, one of the world’s longest bicycle races and expeditions. \n\n\n\nCo-Sponsored by Troy Bike Rescue and the New York Bicycling Coalition. \n\n\n\nFour months on a bicycle between Cairo\, Egypt and Cape Town\, South Africa is not your typical African safari.  En route with the Tour d’Afrique\, one of the world’s longest bicycle races and expeditions\, the Zenga Brothers (Canada) and Brian Vernor (USA) make light of this physically daunting trip by sharing a universal love of the bicycle with Africa’s roadside mechanics\, sporting racers\, and innumerable curious strangers.  \n\n\n\nTraveling more than 70 miles per day\, 50 racers and expedition riders experienced the boundless Nubian desert of Sudan\, the great majesty of Victoria Falls\, and finally the cold rush of the Atlantic Ocean.  \n\n\n\nWhere Are You Go captures the 7\,000 mile expedition as a constant adventure full of playfulness and mysterious beauty\, and is a testament to the endurance of human curiosity \n\n\n\nFollowing the screening will be live music by Restys\, My Survival Kit\, and Charlie Don’t Surf.

SUMMARY:"The Baader Meinhof Complex" Screening
DESCRIPTION:The Baader Meinhof Complex (2008) is a new Academy Award-nominated drama by Uli Edel which shows how founders of the Red Army Faction graduated from rhetorical debates to revolutionary violence\, as terrorism rocked the fragile 1970’s German democracy. The radicalized children of the Nazi generation led by Andreas Baader (Moritz Bleibtreu)\, Ulrike Meinhof (Martina Gedeck) and Gudrun Ensslin (Johanna Wokalek) are fighting a violent war against what they perceive as the new face of fascism: American imperialism supported by the German establishment\, many of whom have a Nazi past. Their aim is to create a more human society but by employing inhuman means they not only spread terror and bloodshed\, they also lose their own humanity. The man who understands them is also their hunter: the head of the German police force Horst Herold (Bruno Ganz). And while he succeeds in his relentless pursuit of the young terrorists\, he knows he’s only dealing with the tip of the iceberg. \n\n\n\nStill from The Baader Meinhof Complex (Uli Edel \, 2008\, 2hr 30min)\n\n\n\nAbout the Film:\n\n\n\nProducer and scriptwriter Bernd Eichinger (PERFUME – STORY OF A MURDERER\, DOWNFALL) brings Stefan Aust’s standard work on RAF terrorism\, Baader-Meinhof: The Inside Story of the R.A.F. to the big screen for Constantin Film. Director Uli Edel (LAST EXIT TO BROOKLYN\, ZOO) presents the dramatic events that shook the democratic foundations of the Federal Republic of Germany from 1967 to the “German Autumn” of 1977. \n\n\n\nStefan Aust’s book Baader-Meinhof: The Inside Story of the R.A.F. was first published in 1985 and has defined today’s view of the Red Army Faction’s war against the state like no other book. It is neither a case for the prosecution nor the defense. It does not proclaim any verdict\, either legally or morally. It is a protocol\, a chronicle of the events that reached their peak in the “German Autumn” of 1977\, in the hijacking and liberation of the passengers and crew of the Lufthansa plane “Landshut\,” the suicides of the imprisoned RAF leaders and the murder of the Employers’ Association President Hanns Martin Schleyer. \n\n\n\nStefan Aust’s masterful history of the group presents the definitive account\, capturing a highly complex story both accurately and colorfully. Much new information has surfaced since the mass suicide of the groups’ leaders in the 1980s. Some RAF members have come forward to testify in new investigations and formerly classified Stasi documents have been made public since the fall of the Berlin Wall\, all contributing to a fuller picture of the RAF and the events surrounding their demise. \n\n\n\nAust presents the complete history of the RAF\, from the creation in 1970 to the breakup in 1998\, incorporating all of the new information. For instance\, there is growing evidence that the German secret service eavesdropped on Baader\, Meinhof\, and the other RAF members imprisoned in Stammheim and that they knew that the terrorists planned a mass suicide\, but did nothing to prevent it. Also\, there is new information about the role of the RAF lawyers (among them Otto Schily who later was Minister of the Interior in Gerhard Schroder’s cabinet)\, and the roles of the different RAF members and the rivalry between them. The volume also contains numerous photos. \n\n\n\nTerrorism today is never far from most people’s thoughts. Baader-Meinhof offers a gripping account of one of the most violent terrorist groups of the late twentieth century\, in a compelling look at what they did\, why they did it\, and how they were brought to justice. \n\n\n\nPress:\n\n\n\n“Riveting.” —Washington Post \n\n\n\n“There has never been an account as authoritative\, or as gripping\, as ‘Baader-Meinhof\,’ which has the advantage of being related by a journalist who was once so close to the action that the gang targeted him for death… a riveting portrait of the gang and its two leaders\, Andreas and Ulrike Meinhof. … Mr. Aust tells the Baader-Meinhof story with journalistic care but also with an acute sense of drama… ‘Baader-Meinhof” might seem an unlikely book to recommend — after all\, it’s about far-away and long-ago antiwar radicalism. But it is also a clear-eyed look at the inner workings of a group driven by violent fanaticism\, and on that score Mr. Aust’s indispensable work could not be more timely. “—Wall Street Journal \n\n\n\n“Meticulously researched.”—Kurt Loder\, MTV.com \n\n\n\n“This is one of the best books I’ve read this year in any genre.” —John Wilson\, Christianity Today \n\n\n\n“Riveting.”—Regina Weinreich \n\n\n\n“Aust writes about his subject with admirable dispassion and clarity and in exacting detail\, tracking the cat-and-mouse movements between the group and the German police and its political leaders not just over several years\, but down to the hour… one could not ask for a better guide to this story\, and baring some significant new revelations\, “Baader-Meinhof” is certain to be the final word on the subject.”—The Seattle Times \n\n\n\n“Exhaustively detailing the group’s exploits from 1970 until the prison suicides of the leaders in 1977\, Aust offers fascinating insights into both the spectacular and the mundane aspects of life in a terrorist cadre. He also offers includes new information obtained from Stasi files released after Germany’s reunification… this fast-paced account allows readers to peer into the minds of actors engaged in committing horrific acts of violence with the goal of advancing a political agenda–a timely subject in the age of global terrorism.”—Library Journal \n\n\n\n“Among Germany’s many chronicles of its homegrown terrorists\, Stefan Aust’s 1985 600-page Baader-Meinhof Komplex stands out as the classic…. The 2008 reworked translation of Aust’s book\, Baader-Meinhof: The Inside Story of the R.A.F. \, provides English readers with the German Autumn story\, updated with Aust’s latest findings.” —Washington Monthly \n\n\n\n“Excellent.”—Christopher Hitchens\, Vanity Fair

SUMMARY:Be The Media! Workshop with Nan Rubin: Digital Preservation
DESCRIPTION:“Video Archiving 101: How to Save and Access Your Video Collection” for organizations and individuals. So you made your media and got it out there; now what? This workshop will help you safeguard that treasured masterpiece for generations to come. Learn what formats work and which don’t for archiving your media projects. \n\n\n\nMORE ABOUT NAN RUBIN\, Digital Preservation Pioneer: Since its start in 2005\, the NDIIPP Preserving Digital Public Television Project has made significant progress in building infrastructure\, creating standards and obtaining resources\, and much of the credit goes to its project director\, Nan Rubin. \n\n\n\nRubin has a warm smile and a straight-shooting New Yorker demeanor. She has been a social activist since her teenage years and is accustomed to fighting for causes\, especially empowering under-represented people through broadcast media. “I’ve really focused on trying to expand people’s voices using the media that’s been available\,” Rubin said. She started community radio stations in Cincinnati\, Ohio\, and Denver\, Colo.\, and has been a radio producer for 30 years. \n\n\n\nHer work eventually led her to public television station Thirteen/WNET New York. A project to move the station’s 60\,000 videotapes resulted in creating an archive for the station\, which was a revelation for Rubin. “I realized how important it was to community groups to save their legacy and put it online and make it available to people in new ways\,” she said. Her passion for preservation extends to other projects in addition to her full-time work with Thirteen: she is also helping a large network of bilingual public radio stations in California develop an archive project to make 20 years of news programs available on-line. \n\n\n\nRubin is a driving force in working with the Library of Congress to preserve public television digital program content. Her NDIIPP project focuses on creating a consistent approach to digital curation among stations that produce national programming for PBS. In addition to Thirteen\, there are three other partners in the project: PBS; WGBH in Boston; and New York University. Rubin says that this collaboration has resulted in important benefits. NYU\, for example\, has provided critical digital-preservation expertise. \n\n\n\n“They have a graduate program in moving-image preservation that Howard Besser started\,” she said. “So not only do they have a technical side for building a digital repository\, expertise that doesn’t exist within public television\, but they also have the resource of students and research assistants that we’d never have on our own.” The project has produced new tools and improved practices. “We’ve chosen a set of metadata schema that includes four elements: PBCore (a standard developed by and for public media organizations)\, METS rights\, MODS and PREMIS.” \n\n\n\nRubin has also facilitated several successful data transfer tests with the Library\, and is working to develop transfer tools. The success of the project is also being watched closely in Europe\, where they see the NDIIPP repository as a valuable model for approaching preservation of digital video. “We didn’t expect to be at the leading edge of solving these problems\,” she said\, “but we’re glad to share our experience with and learn from colleagues abroad. Digital sustainability is way too big a task for any single organization to take on alone.” \n\n\n\nIn addition to the NDIIPP project\, Rubin is involved with efforts to send copies of nationally distributed programs to the Library for copyright deposit purposes and long-term storage. In the Library’s 2005 interview with Rubin and her 2006 Library Web cast\, she recounted the history of the relationship between PBS and the Library. She also has impressive knowledge about the evolution of video formats and metadata requirements for storing and retrieving program content. The goal is ultimately for PBS and other national content to arrive in digital form at the Library’s National Audio-Visual Conservation Center\, a bunker turned state-of-the-art repository embedded into a lush Virginia hilltop overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains. There the content will be preserved on servers and data tapes. This goal is a key element of the American Archive\, a new national initiative which will support digital archiving and access for public television and radio programs nationwide. \n\n\n\nRubin has high hopes for the American Archive but she is concerned about getting equal representation for all public broadcasters. “WGBH and Thirteen create 60 percent of the national programming seen on public television\, but the American Archive has to include small stations as well as independent and minority producers in both television and radio\,” she said. “I consider it a really important to represent those community producers. And they’re not going to be brought to the table unless they have advocates. It’s not just Great Performances and Nova that need to be preserved; it includes these all these other parts of public broadcasting – local stations\, independent and small producers\, who represent the heart of our rich collective program sources. All of these need to be part of the planning for preservation.” \n\n\n\nMany stations are still unsure about what to do with their programs for the long term and Rubin promotes the American Archive as a solution. She is frank about the many challenges that must be addressed\, and knows that it will take time and effort to bring about change. But Rubin also has faith that the public-broadcasting world will recognize the achievements of the NDIIPP Preserving Digital Public Television Project and will elevate digital preservation as a priority. “We need to demonstrate how it’s really important to production\, to be able to get your stuff later\, and that it can be integrated without being overly burdensome or unmanageably expensive\,” Rubin said. “We’re working on that now.” \n\n\n\nOur Be the Media! workshop series provides local artists\, producers\, and citizen journalists with opportunities to acquire and improve the skills necessary for successful and powerful independent media-making. We offer an interdisciplinary approach to diverse media arts practices with new technologies\, with core focus on creative practice and artistry. \n\n\n\nBe The Media! is funded in part by New York State Council on the Arts.

SUMMARY:Theatrical Sneak Premiere of "The Yes Men Fix the World" with Filmmaker Mike Bonanno
DESCRIPTION:The Yes Men Fix the World is a screwball true story about two gonzo political activists who\, armed with nothing but thrift-store suits\, pose as top executives of giant corporations\, lie their way into big business conferences\, and pull off the world’s most outrageous pranks\, parodying their corporate targets in ever more extreme ways. \n\n\n\nFrom New Orleans to India to New York City\, the Yes Men squeeze raucous comedy out of all the ways that corporate greed is destroying the planet. Brüno meets Michael Moore in this gut-busting wake-up call that proves a little imagination can go a long way towards vanquishing the Cult of Greed. Who knew fixing the world could be so much fun? Don’t miss this North American theatrical premiere\, presented by Yes Man Mike Bananno.

SUMMARY:"Workers' Republic" with Filmmaker Andrew Freund
DESCRIPTION:Workers’ Republic (2009) is a story of the courage\, resolve\, creativity\, and solidarity of the workers at Republic Windows and Doors in Chicago\, who stood up for their rights after being thrown out of work three weeks before Christmas 2008. \n\n\n\nCo-sponsored by Bethlehem Neighbors for Peace and the Troy Area Labor Council. \n\n\n\nWorkers’ Republic(Filmmaker: Andrew Freund\, 2009\, 62 min)“When the economy fell\, they stood up.” \n\n\n\nThree weeks before Christmas 2008\, in the depths of the economic crisis\, Chicago company Republic Windows and Doors told their workforce that the factory was closing shop. Republic executives complained about dwindling sales due to the crash of the housing market. Three days later\, when the Republic employees came in to pick up their final paychecks\, they were informed that they would not be paid for their final week or receive their accrued vacation pay. Their insurance benefits were cut immediately\, and they were denied the 60-day severance guaranteed under the federal WARN Act. \n\n\n\nWhat those workers did next reverberated across the country\, reminding the working class it possesses a power long forgotten. They occupied the doomed factory 24-hours a day for six days\, declaring they would not leave until they were given what their employer owed them. \n\n\n\nWorkers’ Republic conveys the courage\, the resolve\, the creativity\, and the solidarity of those window-builders who vowed to stand up for their rights. From the opening moments to the final settlement and culminating in the surprise fate of the Chicago factory\, the film commits one of American society’s most grievous sins: speaking in favor of radical action as a solution to exploitation. \n\n\n\nFilmmaker and union steward Andrew Freund has assembled the accounts of several of the main fighters in the Republic struggle\, including front line workers\, the organizers of their tiny union United Electrical\, Radio\, & Machine Workers\, and a few of the thousands of everyday people that supported them through small acts of solidarity. \n\n\n\nBio: \n\n\n\nFilmmaker Andrew Freund is an Emmy-nominated videographer whose work has appeared on PBS and Chicago television stations. He worked on the upcoming documentary film\, Immigrant Nation. Freund has produced several half-hour episodes for the non-profit\, pro-union TV show Labor Beat\, and serves as chairman of its board. He resides in Chicago and is an activist against war and domestic violence\, and uses his video skills to campaign for workers’ rights. He is an IBEW steward. His new film\, Workers’ Republic\, documents the December 2008 factory occupation of Republic Windows and Doors by its laid-off employees.

SUMMARY:Front Lines: Words of Choice
DESCRIPTION:Join us in this creative event for reproductive rights! The evening will include an excerpted reading from the newly published and acclaimed book Front Lines: Book of Plays\, a discussion with editor Alexis Greene\, as well as a creativity workshop around reproductive rights issues led by Words of Choice creator Cindy Cooper. \n\n\n\nThe New Press has just released Front Lines: Political Plays by American Women\, edited by Alexis Greene and Shirley Lauro. From the country’s leading female playwrights\, seven brilliant plays on the hot-button issues of our time. Words of Choice — in its original version — is among the seven contemporary plays from the country’s leading female playwrights on “hot-button issues” of our time. \n\n\n\nThe New Press writes: Front Lines is a pathbreaking collection of the most important\, critically acclaimed plays written by the country’s leading con-temporary female playwrights. In the preface\, Shirley Lauro writes: Ever since this country came into being\, women have waged battles for rights in the pages of their plays\, and on the stages where those plays were performed. \n\n\n\nThe Library Journal writes: Plays tell stories\, and the best ones stay with us. Compiled by theater critic Greene (Women Who Write Plays) and playwright Lauro (Open Admissions)\, the stories in this collection of critically acclaimed works by seven leading female playwrights address some of the most contentious of contemporary issues\, and they will stick in readers’ minds for a long time. Cindy Cooper’s Words of Choice looks at the issue of reproductive choice in first-person accounts\, poems\, and satire. In Elliot\, A Soldier’s Fugue\, Quiara Alegría Hudes deftly interweaves the tales of three gener-ations of Latino men who served in Korea\, Vietnam\, and Iraq. The Exonerated\, by Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen\, is based on interviews with men and women on death row for crimes they did not commit. Also included are plays by Paula Vogel\, Emily Mann\, Lauro\, and Nilaja Sun. Recommended for all academic and public drama collections. \n\n\n\nWriting in the introduction\, Alexis Greene describes Words of Choice:\n\n\n\nWords of Choice\, a compilation of first-person accounts\, satiric sketches\, and poems\, illuminates the many angles from which Americans approach the issues of reproductive choice\, especially the choice of whether or not to have an abortion. Among other things\, the play is intended as a warning about the consequences of reversing the 1973 Supreme Court decision in the case of Roe v. Wade\, which made abortion legal in the United States. A father describes how his daughter was assaulted and raped one Fourth-of-July evening\, as she walked home through Washington\, D.C. [originally from a book of interviews by Angela Bonavoglia.] There is an excerpt from entertainer Kathy Najimy’s stand-up comedy show Parallel Lives and a sprightly riff about an imaginary “morning-after burrito” from Taco Bell [originally from The Onion.] There is also nurse Emily Lyons’s account of being blown nearly apart by a bomb\, which antiabortionist Eric Rudolph exploded at a Birmingham\, Alabama\, women’s clinic in 1998. “I’ve been to war\,” Lyons says. “I’ve gone to hell\, and I’ve come back.” Greene begins her comments by saying\, “Playwrights have a responsibility to address the social and political issues of their time\,” and concludes with noting that the underlying political issue of all of the plays in the volume is the drive to preserve an individual’s freedom.” \n\n\n\nMore about Cindy Cooper: Cindy Cooper is an award-winning playwright and journalist in New York City. Her plays have been produced in New York\, regional theaters\, Canada and parts of Europe\, including at the Women’s Project\, Primary Stages\, Art and Work Ensemble\, the Women’s Project in Minneapolis\, Venus Theater\, and elsewhere. Among her works is How She Played the Game about six women in sports history. A member of the Dramatists’ Guild\, her plays are contained in eleven volumes\, including ‘Great Monologues for Women’ and ‘On The Edge.’ With a background as a lawyer\, she was communications director in the field of reproductive justice\, she first created ‘Words of Choice’ in 2000. Read a commentary by Cindy here: On the Road with Choice. \n\n\n\nThe following is a poem\, created by the audience during the Words of Choice event:\n\n\n\nSanctuary for Independent Media\, Troy NYPoem by Audience:Reproductive Freedom \n\n\n\nMY BODY. \n\n\n\nThe right of any person to choose whether or not to parent.Freedom for MY BODY\, my mind\, my spirit…for my own choice. The ability to decide when\, where and why.Rights to one’s own mind\, spirit\, life & livelihood! \n\n\n\nMY BODY. \n\n\n\nThe ability to make decisions on what birth control to use\, to enjoy MYSELF with the same consequences a man would have. \n\n\n\nFreedom to learn\, understand and exercise the right to decide when and whether to be a parent\, and to access quality care\, regardless of MY choices. \n\n\n\nMY BODY. \n\n\n\nThe freedom to choose how I love myself in the present & future; the freedom to choose the legacy I have.

SUMMARY:The River Runs Both Ways: Reconsidering Dutch Exploration
DESCRIPTION:The evening will present a scintillating exploration of colonization\, imperialism and historical revisionism as the 400-year anniversary celebration of Henry Hudson’s exploration winds down!  First\, a special screening of Mother Dao the Turtlelike (1995)\, an adventurous award-winning assembly of songs\, poetry and nitrate films of 400-years of Dutch occupation of Indonesia from acclaimed Dutch film auteur Vincent Monnikendam.  The screening will be followed by an insightful discussion with Union College Professor of History Andrew Feffer and RPI Professor of Anthropology Tamar Gordon about the broad implications of Dutch “discoveries” across the globe and our peculiar location at the end of this long historical tether. \n\n\n\nThe featured film for the evening is Mother Dao the Turtlelike\, an international award-winning compilation of clips from documentaries and propaganda films shot by Dutch cameramen between 1912 and 1932 in their former colony of Indonesia. The film contrasts the lives of wealthy colonial rulers\, who bark out orders while clad in immaculately white outfits\, with the hopeless situation of the native people\, who are victims of a brutal economic exploitation. Much of the footage used to be shown in the Netherlands as an illustration of the beneficial effect of the Dutch presence\, but nowadays it merely evokes negative associations. Apart from images of economic repression\, Mother Dao the Turtlelike contains archive footage that details the cultural and religious expressions of the indigenous people. The original footage had no soundtrack\, but the filmmaker has added natural sounds from Indonesia\, indigenous music\, and recited poetry\, but no voice-over. The film’s title refers to a mythical story that\, according to the inhabitants of the island of Nias\, situated to the west of Sumatra\, explains the origin of creation. \n\n\n\nConstructed entirely from colonialist documentaries shot by whites in the former Dutch East Indies\, this film succeeds in giving these racist clips a new meaning.  This film uses the colonizers’ own propaganda to condemn their mission to Westernize indigenous groups\, revealing how colonialism corrupted the culture of everyday life. Moreover\, the Dutch settlers are shown living in isolated capsules of Western life\, reproduced and maintained by forced labor. \n\n\n\nMother Dao the Turtlelike has been screened at forty-eight international film festivals and has received eighteen awards and prizes\, among them five Golden Awards. The film was proclaimed the best Dutch film of 1995. \n\n\n\nDirector’s Statement\n\n\n\nClose to a million feet of 35mm documentary nitrate film footage from the Dutch film archives served as the source material for this documentary. In a span of ninety minutes the film aims to show how the Netherlands administered its colony as a colonial enterprise and what the relations were like at the time. The usual commentary has been omitted and in its place poems and songs in Bahasa Indonesia have been included in a digital sound composition. \n\n\n\nIn “Mother Dao the Turtlelike\,” the viewer sees how the colonial machinery in the 1920s was implanted in a world so different from Western Europe. He or she will witness various phenomena and aspects of that colonial enterprise–then at its peak–which\, thanks to cinematography\, were recorded. The shoots for the more than one thousand 35mm nitrate documentary films took place in the Dutch West Indies between 1912 and about 1933. All belong to the collections of the two Dutch film archives\, and in the meantime the main corpus has been preserved. \n\n\n\nThe documentary starts with a shortened version of the legend of the inhabitants of Nias\, an isle to the West of Sumatra. It was told that the earth was created by Mother Dao. When standing on the beach\, the inhabitants of the island could see the horizon half curved like the shell of a turtle. So they called the creator of the world “Mother Dao the Turtlelike.  At some point in time eternal\, she collected the dirt off her body and kneaded it on her knee into a ball. That was the world. Later\, she became pregnant\, without knowing a man\, and gave birth to a girl and a boy. They were the first people and they lived in a fertile world. And it was this fertile world that attracted the Europeans\, and especially the Dutch\, in their colonial endeavors. \n\n\n\nAbout The Director\n\n\n\nVincent Monnikendam was born in 1936 in Hague\, the Netherlands. For 30 years from 1964 onwards\, worked as director\, producer\, editor of documentary film for NOS-TV and NPS-TV. In 1995 he went independent\, and continues his activities as a documentary filmmaker. Most of his works concern issues such as immigrants and race problems. They include: District 69\, depicting the life in the immigrants ghetto in Hague; The Ten Token\, a five-part film on Turkish and Greek immigrants in the Netherlands; and The Illegals\, a documentary on illegal Turkish and Moroccan workers in the Greenhouse industry\, for which Monnikendam spent 6 months living amongst the workers. In 1995 completed Mother Dao the Turtlelike which took 6 years in production\, and was acclaimed at documentary film festivals all over the world.

SUMMARY:Reverend Billy and The Church of Life After Shopping
DESCRIPTION:The rumors are true. Join us on Friday night\, December 18\, for a Shopocalyptic Revival. The Rev\, the choir and members of the Not Buying It band promises our old church a performance we will not forget. Confess your shopping sins! Cast out the demons of overconsumption! Go beyond the market to a life after shopping! Strangalleiuah\, children! \n\n\n\nThe Rev says: “Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit. Blessed are the jobless who force us to change the economy. Blessed are the homeless who unlock empty buildings. Blessed are the evicted who resist with their children watching! Blessed are the broke who re-introduce the what-can-I-do-for-no-money? Blessed are the recycled gifts and home-made art and swap-o-ramas and farmer’s markets. Blessed is the local Christmas. Local-ujah! On this tour there is no room in the inn. We are not paid much – but our hosts have a lot to share. We’re forced out into public space\, nuzzled by cows and sheep with angels over-head! Out into the commons\, out into the new funky Garden of Eden. We’re starting over!”
