SUMMARY:Underground Gallery Exhibition by Nina Berman: "Evidence and Fantasy - Militarism in American Life"
DESCRIPTION:Nina Berman is an award-winning documentary photographer based in New York City\, widely publicized and exhibited\, with a primary interest in the American political and social landscape. Her work examines the influence of war and militarism on American life at this time in our history when so many resources\, both human and material\, are dedicated to military pursuit. Many of the soldiers Nina met said they thought it would be fun\, but their experiences told a different story. She became interested in how as a culture we visualize and fantasize war and what role the burgeoning homeland security state plays in the creation and dissemination of these fantasies. This exhibition featured her series Homeland\, Purple Hearts\, and Marine Weddings. The exhibition will be on view from September 26th through December 12th\, 2009.

SUMMARY:Reverend Billy and The Church of Life After Shopping
DESCRIPTION:The rumors are true. Join us on Friday night\, December 18\, for a Shopocalyptic Revival. The Rev\, the choir and members of the Not Buying It band promises our old church a performance we will not forget. Confess your shopping sins! Cast out the demons of overconsumption! Go beyond the market to a life after shopping! Strangalleiuah\, children! \n\n\n\nThe Rev says: “Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit. Blessed are the jobless who force us to change the economy. Blessed are the homeless who unlock empty buildings. Blessed are the evicted who resist with their children watching! Blessed are the broke who re-introduce the what-can-I-do-for-no-money? Blessed are the recycled gifts and home-made art and swap-o-ramas and farmer’s markets. Blessed is the local Christmas. Local-ujah! On this tour there is no room in the inn. We are not paid much – but our hosts have a lot to share. We’re forced out into public space\, nuzzled by cows and sheep with angels over-head! Out into the commons\, out into the new funky Garden of Eden. We’re starting over!”

SUMMARY:"Day Night Day Night" with Filmmaker Julia Loktev
DESCRIPTION:Filmmaker Julia Loktev presents her feature film\, Day Night Day Night (2006)\, the story of a 19-year old preparing to become a suicide bomber in TImes Square. She speaks with a nondescript American accent\, and it’s impossible to pinpoint her ethnicity. We never see the bomb; we only see the backpack and headphones that disguise the detonator. Inspired in part by a Russian newspaper story about a Chechen in Moscow\, the film could take place anywhere. \n\n\n\nCo-sponsored by the Department of the Arts at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. \n\n\n\nThe 19-year-old\, known only as She\, is a Tabla Rosa\, with no discernible accent\, ethnicity or family history. She is extremely vulnerable\, alone\, except for the men in masks who take her through the motions of preparation for her mission. The viewer never learns why she has made her momentous decision\, we just know it’s been made. We are also left in the dark as to who She represents or what She believes in: we only know she believes it absolutely. The film strips the story down to its existential core\, focusing on microscopic movements\, the smallest of gestures\, an economy of banal details. \n\n\n\nDay Night Day Night is divided into two visually and aurally distinct parts: Preparation and Action. In the first part\, the film faithfully follows the chronological order of events over the span of day to night as She prepares to execute her mission. She washes her socks\, is dressed and fitted into the backpack\, waits. Then the action begins: she’s in Times Square\, alone. The film now becomes a series of trials\, missteps and setbacks. \n\n\n\nThe film has no music and a minimal\, at times improvised\, script. Director Loktev draws out a powerful and emotional performance from untrained\, first-time actress Luisa Williams in the lead role. Loktev also uses an extraordinary sound design track to cleverly build the tension and suspense\, making the experience all too real. \n\n\n\nIt happens to take place in Times Square\, a target whose symbolism is so specific that it becomes generalized; a target so simple because it’s so obvious. Playing off a history of Joan of Arc films\, the movie transpires mainly on the young woman’s face. The minimalism of her expressions is contrasted by the visual and aural noise of New York City as faith comes face-to-face with the possibility of failure. \n\n\n\nAbout the Director\n\n\n\nAt the age of nine\, Julia Loktev emigrated to the United States with her family from St. Petersburg\, Russia\, and currently lives in New York City. \n\n\n\nAs her graduate thesis film from NYU\, Loktev directed the intimate but unsentimental 1998 documentary Moment of Impact\, about the aftermath of a car accident that left her own father severely brain-damaged and bedridden. Shot and edited without a crew\, the film won numerous awards\, including The Directing Audience Award at Sundance\, and the Grand Prize at both Cinema du Reel and the Munich International Documentary Festival. \n\n\n\nLoktev also creates multiple-screen video installations in a museum/gallery context\, and has shown work at the Tate Modern in London\, P.S.1 in New York\, Haus der Kunst in Munich\, Bienal de Valencia\, and Mito Art Tower in Japan. \n\n\n\nWhen asked to talk about her inspiration for Day Night Day Night\, Loktev responded: “It started with an article I read in a Russian newspaper about a girl walking down a main street in Moscow with a bomb in her bag. What really drew me to the story was the elephant in the living room\, the ending. We can’t talk about that. But I can say that it definitely doesn’t turn out how you expect it to. But also I had been walking the same street as this girl was about a week before\, in Moscow\, like tourist with a backpack\, not knowing where I was going and I thought up until you have the explosion from the outside it really looks like the same thing\, two girls walking around disoriented. What fascinated me was that under the surface something completely different was going on and I thought is there a way to make a film that gets out what is happening under this girl’s skin that isn’t about how something looks from the outside but feels from the inside.” \n\n\n\nOn her research for the film\, Loktev told ioncinema.com: “I’ve read more about suicide bombers than any sane person really should…in Russian newspapers\, American and Israeli newspapers… there are interviews available with people who set out to be suicide bombers and for one reason or another didn’t go through with it\, either the thing didn’t work out or they backed out…these interviews are fascinating because often people reveal the most banal details that are part of this story. \n\n\n\nFor instance\, there was one girl who backed out because she felt ‘she was doing it maybe because my boyfriend broke up with me and when I get to heaven god is going to know I came for something that wasn’t a pure reason.’  And so something like that I would work into the story. Not in a direct way\, but with little pieces: girls who would talk about the clothing they wore for the mission because there’s always this part of dress up when they are transformed\, first to look one way for the video\, where they present this image of militancy\, to hold a gun\, to wear a military jacket before the mission and there’s this second part of the dress up which is the way they are dressed up for the mission itself\, to blend in. \n\n\n\nSo in the film they take this very conservative looking girl..this almost clinical but very true scene where these guys select clothes for her to wear to blend in with the other girls in Times Square. No matter how giant the overall task\, extreme events are made up of the most daily details. And that’s usually what people remember after the fact. I was struck by when you hear about people talking about 9/11 and some woman who remembered losing her shoe while she was running\, and for her it will always be associated with that shoe she lost in the street. \n\n\n\nOne Chechen girl in Moscow blew up a truck bomb by running it into a convoy\, but before she did\, she stopped and bought some bananas\,” explains Loktev. “I thought\, it’s not about the truck bomb\, it’s the bananas.” Or the pretzel. In Day Night Day Night\, actress Luisa Williams stands in front of the Duane Reade on 42nd Street\, eating one. With mustard.

SUMMARY:"Freeing Charles: The Struggle to Free a Slave on the Eve of the Civil War" with Author Scott Christianson
DESCRIPTION:Scott Christianson\, author of Freeing Charles: The Struggle to Free a Slave on the Eve of the Civil War\, will give a multimedia presentation that looks at the life and epic rescue of captured fugitive slave Charles Nalle. In an almost unimaginable act – and the most dramatic slave rescue in American history – Nalle was forcibly liberated by Harriet Tubman and hundreds of protesters on April 27\, 1860 in our own Troy\, New York. \n\n\n\nCo-sponsored by the Underground Railroad History Project of the Capital Region. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Event:\n\n\n\nAn Abolitionist History of Troy Through the Life of Charles Nalle \n\n\n\nThe forcible liberation of a captured fugitive slave\, Charles Nalle\, by Harriet Tubman and hundreds of protesters on April 27\, 1860 constituted the most dramatic slave rescue in American history and arguably the most significant event in the history of Troy and Watervliet. Yet until now\, the episode has received little public attention. \n\n\n\nAward-winning author Scott Christianson has spent eighteen years reconstructing Nalle’s life and escape from bondage\, the operation of the Underground Railroad\, and the riots that pitted an interracial mob of local abolitionists against armed proslavery forces.  Now his long-awaited book\, Freeing Charles: The Struggle to Free a Slave on the Eve of the Civil War (University of Illinois Press)\, has just appeared in time for the 150th-year anniversary of Nalle’s rescue.  \n\n\n\nIn a spirited public discussion\, Christianson will share this amazing story\, joined by African American artist Mark Priest\, who has spent the past several years reconstructing the incident in a series of monumental paintings.  Mark’s talk will be accompanied by a short video he produced on the making of the Charles Nalle images.  Local historians\, activists\, church and other community folks\, and actual descendants of Charles Nalle’s family are expected to attend.  \n\n\n\nNoted author Fergus M. Bordewich says Christianson “guides us unflinchingly along the heartbreaking fault line of racial relations that warped life in America–in both the North and the South–in the age of slavery\,” and Tubman’s leading biographer\, Kate Clifford Larson\, has called it “a true testament to those sometimes-ordinary people who did extraordinary things for other human beings.” \n\n\n\nAbout the Author\n\n\n\nSCOTT CHRISTIANSON is an award-winning author\, investigative reporter\, curator\, filmmaker and scholar who lives and works in New York’s Capital District.  He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. from the State University of New York at Albany\, and his B.A. from the University of Connecticut. He has taught at Bard College\, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute\, Union College\, SUNY-Albany and other universities\, and lectured throughout the U.S. and abroad.  His writing has appeared in The New York Times\, Washington Post\, The Nation\, Christian Science Monitor\, Newsday\, Mother Jones\, New York Law Journal\, Journal of American History\, American Legacy\, and many other journals and independent media.  He also appears on national TV and radio and has worked on films for HBO\, PBS\, History Channel\, Discovery\, Arte (France)\, WDR (Germany)\, and Hollywood. He is the author of With Liberty for Some: 500 Years of Imprisonment in America (winner of the Robert F. Kennedy Distinguished Honors Book Award\, cited by the U.S. Supreme Court)\, Condemned: Inside the Sing Sing Death House\, Innocent: Inside Wrongful Conviction Cases and other books.  A strong supporter of the Sanctuary for Independent Media\, he lives in Sand Lake in a house that was part of the Underground Railroad.  \n\n\n\nMARK PRIEST is associate professor of art at the University of Louisville. He received his master’s degree from Yale University. His series of paintings on the rescue of captured fugitive slave Charles Nalle is being exhibited at the Rensselaer County Historical Society and Russell Sage College in February and March 2010.   \n\n\n\n                     \n\n\n\nPress About Freeing Charles:\n\n\n\n“Extensively researched and finely analyzed\, Freeing Charles tells the gripping story of a fugitive slave rescue that has largely escaped our attention until now.” –Richard J. M. Blackett\, author of Divided Hearts: Britain and the American Civil War \n\n\n\n“In this magnificently conceived and subtly rendered book\, Scott Christianson not only brings to life the men and women of the Underground Railroad as they carry out one of the most dramatic rescues of a fugitive slave on record\, he also guides us unflinchingly along the heartbreaking fault line of racial relations that warped life in America–inå both the North and the South–in the age of slavery.” –Fergus M. Bordewich\, author of Bound for Canaan: The Underground Railroad and the War for the Soul of America \n\n\n\n“Absorbing and eminently readable. With a large cast of characters\, this stirring historical narrative centered on one incident also uses a wide-angle lens to reveal many other facets of slavery’s impact during the antebellum years.” –Jean M. Humez\, author of Harriet Tubman: The Life and the Life Stories \n\n\n\n“Scott Christianson’s beautifully written real life story of fugitive slave Charles Nalle\, whose dramatic escape\, recapture\, and then rescue is one of the long forgotten yet incredibly important events in our nation’s history\, is as compelling as the most thrilling contemporary fiction. Simmering tensions between freedom and slavery are abruptly thrown into dramatic public confrontation as notions of race and identity are challenged in ways long ignored by most Americans.  Christianson deftly weaves the complex realities of antebellum America – the ownership of human beings and the absolute control it endowed on owners and masters who were sometimes related by blood\, and the legal and social structures that defined life for African Americans – through the lives of those who lived it. Not all white northerners were anti-slavery\, and therefore life for refugees could be insecure and fraught with danger. But this book is a true testament to those sometimes-ordinary people who did extraordinary things for other human beings. Christianson serves up history like a master storyteller – a great dose of good vs. evil drama in the form of tragedy\, triumph\, love\, illicit sex\, and a cast of characters that will surprise and delight you.” –Kate Clifford Larson\, Bound for the Promised Land: Harriet Tubman\, Portrait of an American Hero \n\n\n\n“A vivid and arresting biography that focuses on one mid-nineteenth century man and his family\, whom slavery constantly imperiled even after they freed themselves not only once\, but several times. It is such stories that help us learn how much was at stake for anyone held to slavery and the lengths to which some white people would go to reverse attempts at self-emancipation.” –Philip J. Schwarz\, author of Migrants against Slavery: Virginians and the Nation

SUMMARY:"The Age Of Stupid" Screening
DESCRIPTION:In Fanny Armstrong’s (McLible\, 2005) The Age of Stupid (2009)\, Oscar-nominated Pete Postlethwaite stars as a man living alone in the devastated world of 2055\, looking at old footage and asking: why didn’t we stop climate change when we had the chance?   \n\n\n\nIn advance of the screening Honest Weight Food will sponsor a reception where there will be information tables from local organizations. \n\n\n\nScreening co-sponsored by The Community Renewable Energy (CoRE) Project\, Capital District Local First\, and Honest Weight Food Co-op. \n\n\n\nThe Climate Crisis Film That Focuses on the Big\, Moral\, Human Stuff\n\n\n\nIn the year 2055 – now a ravaged\, war-torn\, flooded world – an unnamed archivist\, played by Oscar-nominated actor Pete Postlethwaite\, is entrusted with the safekeeping of humanity’s surviving store of art and knowledge. Alone in his offshore repository\, he reviews archive footage from back “when we could have saved ourselves\,” trying to discern where it all went wrong. Amid news reports of the gathering effects of climate change and global civilization teetering towards destruction\, he alights on the stories of seven individuals whose lives in the early years of the 21st century seem to illustrate aspects of the impending catastrophe. These stories take the form of interweaving documentary segments that report on the lives of real people in the present\, and switch the film’s narrative from fiction to fact. \n\n\n\nMore on the film\n\n\n\nThe 2009 film by award winning British director\, Franny Armstrong\, is a drama-documentary-animation hybrid shot in seven countries over a period of three years. The original plan – begun in 2002 – was to borrow the narrative structure of Steven Soderbergh’s movie\, Traffic\, and make a documentary about climate change by following the stories of seven characters However\, after seeing the finished documentary\, Armstrong decided to add a dramatic component to awaken her audience to the impending global crisis.  \n\n\n\nArmstrong Biography\n\n\n\nBorn in 1972\, British documentary film director Franny Armstrong became obsessed with the issue of climate change in high school. Working through her own company\, Spanner Films\, her first documentary\, McLibel\, told the inside story of the infamous McDonald’s trial. Filmed with no commission\, no budget\, and a voluntary crew\, the film took years to both make and screen. It was recently chosen for the prestigious British Film Institute series “Ten Documentaries That Changed the World.” \n\n\n\nNext came the 2002 documentary Drowned Out\, which followed an Indian family who chose to stay with their home and drown rather than make way for the Narmada Dam. After being sold to Television worldwide\, it went on to be nominated for Best Documentary at the 2004 British Independent Film Awards\, and was released theatrically in the U.S. in 2006. Another documentary on climate change\, Baked Alaska\, was never completed.  \n\n\n\n10:10\n\n\n\nAn offshoot of The Age of Stupid project\, 10:10 is a UK-wide campaign encouraging everyone in Britain to reduce their carbon emissions by at least 10 percent during 2010. While the documentary is aimed at raising awareness of climate change as a pending global humanitarian crisis\, 10:10 is presented as a strategy for people to take positive action in the face of such an urgent and daunting problem. \n\n\n\nCrowd-Funding and Distribution\n\n\n\nAlmost as interesting as the film itself is the way it was made and funded. The film was “crowd-funded”\, with the £450\,000 budget being raised by selling shares to 223 individuals and groups\, who donated between £500 and £35\,000. This manner of funding the film gave it the best chance of reaching a mainstream audience while allowing the Armstrong and her crew to retain complete editorial control. \n\n\n\nIn May 2009\, The Age of Stupid team launched their Indie Screenings model\, a new form of film distribution which allows anyone\, anywhere to buy a license to hold a screening of the film – with the price set according to the screeners means. The model immediately proved extremely popular\, with 682 screenings booked in the first four months.

Disambiguate the out-of-control vocabulary of cataloging and metadata for audiovisual materials.  There are many cataloging options out there.  Learn what you need to consider for choosing the best path for you and your collection.  Topics include: What kind of software is right for me?  What kind of schema is right for me?  How much metadata is enough?  What is metadata?  How can I capitalize on my metadata to help manage my collection?  Cataloging is an art\, not a law.  Don’t let it define you! \n\n\n\nDon’t Be Scammed by DAMS \n\n\n\nArchives (perhaps even yours!) are full of examples where the promises of new technology fell short of their realities.  As we move further into the age of digital preservation\, Digital Asset Management Systems hold great promise and importance\, but not always great follow through.  DAMS are large investments and are generally developed for production – not archives – or for documents and still images – not audio and moving images.  Learn how to research DAMS – what to look for\, what questions to ask\, how to develop functional requirements before talking to software vendors – that will help you make the right decision. \n\n\n\nThe Archivist’s Guide to Video Digitization \n\n\n\nThe realities of reformatting and migration require that archivists now at least understand how video digitization works and how to talk about it\, if not how to do it themselves.  From equipment to processes to the alphanumeric soup of standards\, there is a whole new mindset and language to learn.  Whether you’re sending your video to vendors or building a digitization station of your own\, the better you understand digitization the better your preservation needs will be met.  Learn how to select equipment\, digitization workflows\, quality assurance\, recommended outputs\, asset management\, preservation standards\, and everything else you need to .mov your collection into the future. \n\n\n\nThe Archivist’s Guide to Audio Digitization \n\n\n\nThe realities of reformatting and migration require that archivists now at least understand how audio digitization works and how to talk about it\, if not how to do it themselves.  From equipment to processes to the alphanumeric soup of standards\, there is a whole new mindset and language to learn.  Whether you’re sending your audio to vendors or building a digitization station of your own\, the better you understand digitization the better your preservation needs will be met.  Learn how to select equipment\, digitization workflows\, quality assurance\, recommended outputs\, asset management\, preservation standards\, and everything else you need to .wav goodbye to confusion. \n\n\n\n“Digital formats and materials are inherently fragile and any strategy that can help you access and preserve them for future use is essential.  Media management is a basic necessity for anyone working in a digital environment\,” says Jeanne M. Keefe\, who took last season’s digital archiving workshop.  Keefe is Media & Digital Assets Librarian for the Architecture Library at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. \n\n\n\nDate of workshop changed from March 7th to March 14\, 2010.

SUMMARY:Matthew Shipp Trio
DESCRIPTION:The celebrated NYC-based Matthew Shipp Trio (featuring Matthew Shipp\, piano; Michael Bisio\, bass; Whit Dickey\, drums) will perform live at the opening of a new gallery show at The Arts Center of the Capital Region\, 265 River Street in downtown Troy NY.  The exhibition\, which features locally-produced videos and still photos of internationally-known musicians\, is called “Freedom Through Collective Improvisation: iEAR Presents! Free Jazz from the Sanctuary” and runs from April 1 through April 30.  The Matthew Shipp Trio will perform at an opening reception with light refreshments at 6 PM on April 1st\, and there will be a closing reception during Troy Night Out on April 30th. \n\n\n\nBios\n\n\n\nAfter moving to New York City in the mid-1980s\, pianist Matthew Shipp quickly became one of the leading lights on the jazz scene.  He was a sideman in the David S. Ware Quartet and also for Roscoe Mitchell’s Note Factory before making the decision to concentrate on his own music.  He has recorded many albums but his most enduring relationships have been with two labels\, Hatology and Thirsty Ear.  In his collection of recordings he has generated a body of work that is visionary\, far reaching\, multi-faceted and widely-acclaimed. \n\n\n\nTroy native Michael Bisio invariably astounds audiences with the beauty of his tone and the intensity of his very personal musical language on the bass.  His recorded output has consistently met with critical praise; as a recording artist he appears on more than 50 cds. \n\n\n\nWhit Dickey is a uniquely gifted drummer whose work with David S. Ware and Matthew Shipp is legendary.  In addition to numerous recordings as a leader\, he has also worked with Rob Brown\, Joe Morris and numerous other jazz luminaries. \n\n\n\nAbout the Exhibition: “Freedom Through Collective Improvisation: iEAR Presents! Free Jazz from the Sanctuary”\n\n\n\nFreedom Through Collective Improvisation: iEAR Presents! Free Jazz from the Sanctuary celebrates a 13-part series of jazz performance videos and photographs featuring some of the world’s most talented improvisers performing a wide spectrum of music in the genre broadly known as free jazz.  These uncompromising and inventive musicians create new languages and expressive forms\, with an aesthetic and conceptual edge that challenges listeners to look at the world anew. \n\n\n\nLike freedom itself\, free jazz as a term defies definition. The name most likely comes from Ornette Coleman’s 1961 album “Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation.” This music celebrates the individual voice and collective action—and\, like anyone exploring the limits of freedom\, the musicians who play it sometimes find themselves on the edge of what is commercially\, culturally and politically acceptable. But they endure… and their quest continues! \n\n\n\nThe featured musicians in these videos and photographs are: \n\n\n\n• The Thirteenth Assembly (Taylor Ho Bynum\, Tomas Fujiwara\, Mary Halvorson\, Jessica Pavone)• Ethnic Heritage Ensemble (Kahil El’Zabar\, Ernest Dawkins\, Corey Wilkes)• Fay Victor Ensemble (Ken Filiano\, Anders Nilsson\, Michael TA Thompson\, Fay Victor)• From Between Trio (Michel Doneda\, Tatsuya Nakatani\, Jack Wright)• Michael Vlatkovich Quartet (Christopher Garcia\, Jonathan Golove\, David Mott\, Michael Vlatkovich)• Sax Soup Poetry and Voice (Joe Giardullo\, Pierre Joris\, Nicole Peyrafitte)• Trio Tarana (Sam Bardfeld\, Ravish Momin\, Brian Prunka)• The Ras Ensemble (Clif Jackson\, Dave Miller\, Ras Moshe\, Tor Yochai Snyder)• William Hooker• Empty Cage Quartet (Ivan Johnson\, Paul Kikuchi\, Jason Mears\, Kris Tiner)• Weasel Walter Trio (Peter Evans\, Mary Halvorson\, Weasel Walter)• Splatto Festival Chorus (Dave Barrett\, Michael Bisio\, Ed Mann\, Todd Reynolds)• Amiri Baraka and Rob Brown \n\n\n\nThis exhibition contains video and photographs that aspire to capture not only the music\, but the spirit behind the “Free Jazz from the Sanctuary” series. The concerts were recorded live between 2007-2009 at The Sanctuary for Independent Media\, a historic former church in North Troy. \n\n\n\nThe video and sound recordings were the work of a collective of artists working at The Sanctuary for Independent Media. \n\n\n\nAndrzej (Andre) Pilarczyk\, who has documented over two decades of musical events throughout the Capital Region\, photographed all but one of the “Free Jazz from the Sanctuary” concerts. “I am out there in front of the stage with a camera because of my passion for the music and the musicians\,” Andrzej explains. “Since I’m not a musician\, this is the way I emotionally and psychologically connect with the music and the performance.” \n\n\n\nJon Flanders\, a member and former president of International Association of Machinists Local 1145 and a member of the Troy Area Labor Council AFL-CIO\, is also an avid photographer.  He shot one of the “Free Jazz from the Sanctuary” concerts. \n\n\n\nThe “Free Jazz from the Sanctuary” series is a co-production of the Department of the Arts at Rensselaer and NY Media Alliance. \n\n\n\nThe Department of the Arts at Rensselaer is the first integrated electronic arts program within a research university in the U.S.  iEAR Presents! is a series of public performances\, exhibitions\, screenings\, and lectures dealing with innovative aesthetic\, cultural\, and technical explorations of experimental media and electronic arts. www.Arts.RPI.edu \n\n\n\nNY Media Alliance\, a 30 year-old non-profit advocate for the media arts\, operates The Sanctuary for Independent Media.  It’s a place where politically engaged interdisciplinary artists experiment with aesthetic form and challenging content.  In this sanctuary\, the overarching goal is to shed light on media arts’ vital role in the process of building a democratic society. www.MediaSanctuary.org \n\n\n\n“Free Jazz from the Sanctuary” was made possible in part with support from the New York State Council on the Arts Presenting Program and the NYS Music Fund\, established by the New York State Attorney General at Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors when investigations into the practice of “payola” or “pay for play” by major recording and broadcasting companies were resolved. These settlements stipulated that funds paid by the music businesses should benefit the residents of New York State through music education and appreciation programs. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition is supported by the Department of the Arts and the School of Humanities\, Arts and Social Sciences at Rensselaer.  This exhibition is funded in part with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts Electronic Media and Film Program.

SUMMARY:"A Chat With Glendora" with Filmmaker Victoria Kereszi
DESCRIPTION:A Chat with Glendora (2010\, 58 minutes\, digital video) is Victoria Kereszi’s portrait of Glendora Folsom Buell\, a physicist\, philosopher\, and self-made television personality who continues to create weekly public access television programs at age 81. As she prepares for her death and plans her funeral throughout the course of the film she attempts to preserve the legacy of community television and the everyday local voices that she has captured in her six-decade career. The film seeks to uncover the unique power in Glendora’s self-representation and solidifies the importance to preserve all of our stories and to write our collective histories. The screening will be preceded by a vegan potluck and a screening of the short Bernice Perry: Queen of Sinatraland (2008\, 20 minutes\, digital video).
