DESCRIPTION:A coalition of local community groups is launching Freedom Square–just up the block from the Sanctuary–with free outdoor live music. We call the collaboration between The Sanctuary for Independent Media\, Missing Link Street Ministry\, Troy Bike Rescue and Collard City Growers the Freedom Square Coalition- named after the grassy spot where 5th and 6th Avenues meet 101st Street a block from the Sanctuary. We think of Freedom Square as an urban cultural and spiritual oasis\, so we were pleased to inaugurate it with a special afternoon of food\, bikes and music on the July 4th weekend.  \n\n\n\nAll the way from Boston is Debo Band\, a 10-piece Ethiopian soul group. The Debo Band is not your mother’s Ethiopian dance band. Expect searing horns\, crooning vocals\, and slinky funk grooves. Dubbed out violin and accordion. Bass-heavy\, brazen\, and dense. Led by Ethiopian-American saxophonist Danny Mekonnen and fronted by charismatic vocalist Bruck Tesfaye\, Debo’s performances bring together the best of the last forty years of Ethiopian music\, with a reverence for the vintage sounds of the 1970s and a commitment to discovering contemporary gems\, as well as developing new compositions. They’re stopping in Troy on their way back to Boston from a performance at the Montreal Jazz Festival. Don’t worry–if you miss this show\, you can catch them in August at Lincoln Center in NYC. Also on the lineup\, homegrown talent from Troy’s own Missing Link Mens Chorus (gospel)\, S.K.A.T.E. Troy Bike Rescue is moving to North Troy.  What began as a pile of old bikes and a series of parking lot workshops has evolved into a group of dedicated volunteers running and maintaining regular shops in both Albany and Troy.  This bike month\, they will be moving the Troy workshop to North Troy and holding a blowout bike party Fun(d)raiser at the Sanctuary for Independent Media to support their efforts.  The event begins with a bike rodeo for kids and adults\, followed by a silent art auction\, raffles\, dinner\, and a program of short films and music MC’d by TBRs core collective members. There will be home-cooked vegetarian food\, many artworks donated by local and regional artists\, and raffle prizes from local bike shops and other restaurants. [This event would later be dubbed BikeFest.]

DESCRIPTION:In the powerful 2010 documentary Not Just a Game: Power Politics & American Sports (based on Zirin’s best-selling book\, The People’s History of Sports in the United States)\, author and activist Dave Zirin argues that\, far from providing merely escapist entertainment\, American sports have long been at the center of some of the major political debates and struggles of our time. We’ve been told again and again that sports and politics don’t mix\, that games are just games and athletes should just “shut up and play.” But according to Zirin\, this notion is just flat-out wrong.  In a fascinating tour of the good\, the bad\, and the ugly of American sports culture\, Zirin first traces how American sports have glamorized militarism\, racism\, sexism\, and homophobia\, then excavates a largely forgotten history of rebel athletes who stood up to power and fought for social justice beyond the field of play. The result is as deeply moving as it is exhilarating: nothing less than an alternative history of political struggle in the United States as seen through the games its people have played. DESCRIPTION:Narrative journalist  Adrian Nicole LeBlanc will respond to questions by photo journalist Brenda Ann Kenneally about her current Sanctuary exhibit\, Scrappin’ Upstate. LeBlanc will explore the issues addressed in Scrappin’ Upstate\, and the vital role of independent journalism\, with a focus on marginalized members of society: adolescents living in poverty\, prostitutes\, women in prison\, etc. One of the central families in LeBlanc’s book Random Family: Love Drugs\, Trouble and Coming of Age in the Bronx (2003) are residents of North Troy\, and a focus of Upstate Girls. When Random Family was selected to be excerpted in the N.Y. Times Magazine\, the N.Y. Times assigned Kenneally the task of photographing the people that LeBlanc had documented through her ten-year reportage.  This marks the beginning of Brenda Ann Kenneally’s Upstate Girls project.  LeBlanc redefined immersion reporting in Random Family\, an intimate chronicle of urban poverty. Some of the central characters in her book are residents of North Troy. In her presentation\, LeBlanc will explore the vital role of independent journalism and focus on the issues addressed in the gallery show.

In particular\, the implications for how we inhabit the landscape.  \n\n\n\nCo-sponsored by the Uptown Initiative. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nJames Howard Kunstler has written extensively about the mutilated everyday environment where most Americans live and work. \n\n\n\nHe says he wrote The Geography of Nowhere\, “Because I believe a lot of people share my feelings about the tragic landscape of highway strips\, parking lots\, housing tracts\, mega-malls\, junked cities\, and ravaged countryside that makes up the everyday environment where most Americans live and work.” \n\n\n\nHome From Nowhere was a continuation of that discussion with an emphasis on the remedies. A portion of it appeared as the cover story in the September 1996 Atlantic Monthly. \n\n\n\nHis next book in the series\, The City in Mind: Notes on the Urban Condition\, published by Simon & Schuster / Free Press\, is a look a wide-ranging look at cities here and abroad\, an inquiry into what makes them great (or miserable)\, and in particular what America is going to do with it’s mutilated cities. \n\n\n\nThis was followed by The Long Emergency\, published by the Atlantic Monthly Press in 2005\, is about the challenges posed by the coming permanent global oil crisis\, climate change\, and other “converging catastrophes of the 21st Century.” \n\n\n\nHis 2008 novel\, World Made By Hand\, was a fictional depiction of the post-oil American future. The sequel to that book\, “The Witch of Hebron\,” is scheduled for publication in October 2010. \n\n\n\nThe Atlantic Monthly Press also published his novel\, Maggie Darling\, in 2004. \n\n\n\nKunstler is also the author of eight other novels including The Halloween Ball\, An Embarrassment of Riches. He is a regular contributor to the New York Times Sunday Magazine and Op-Ed page\, where he has written on environmental and economic issues. \n\n\n\nJames Howard Kunstler was born in New York City in 1948. He moved to the Long Island suburbs in 1954 and returned to the city in 1957 where he spent most of his childhood. He graduated from the State University of New York\, Brockport campus\, worked as a reporter and feature writer for a number of newspapers\, and finally as a staff writer for Rolling Stone Magazine. In 1975\, he dropped out to write books on a full-time basis. He has no formal training in architecture or the related design fields. \n\n\n\nHe has lectured at Harvard\, Yale\, Columbia\, Dartmouth\, Cornell\, MIT\, RPI\, the University of Virginia and many other colleges\, and he has appeared before many professional organizations such as the AIA \, the APA.\, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. \n\n\n\nHe lives in Saratoga Springs in upstate New York.

DESCRIPTION:A day of skill-sharing and planning featuring workshops with many local and regional teachers to help build a network of shared values and knowledge around urban gardens\, food networking\, food preservation\, passive and alternative energies\, water catchment\, and social justice. Together we can manifest the critical and necessary transition from resource-rich industrial capitalism to bio-regional sustainability and community. Against the backdrop of anti-war protests around the country\, we gather to imagine and build an alternative to endless violence. Don’t miss this all-day festival of workshops\, which culminates in a 6 PM community potluck and 7 PM talk by visionary author/activist/farmer Sharon Astyk on “What Will We Eat: An Exploration of the Future of Our Food\,” followed by a discussion. The event culminates with an afterparty.
