DESCRIPTION:A return visit by the internationally renowned 10-piece jazz ensemble that combines the agility and freedom of a jazz combo\, the raw power and subtle coloring of a jazz orchestra\, and the deep grooves of Afro-Latin music\, premiering a new suite commissioned by Chamber Music America. And what about the media? I wanted to put a face on these media nodes\, the places where news is ‘made’ if you will.” This world-premiere exhibition of the eight-year project Media Nodes was originally published in the Columbia Journalism Review. It is a view behind the curtain\, beyond the front page\, to the interior landscape of an industry in transition.

SUMMARY:Sidi Touré and Friends
DESCRIPTION:Our Fall 2011 season opens with music from Mail\, the hotbed of new African music\, featuring: Sidi Touré\, guitar and vocals; Jambla Maiga\, kuntigui; Domu Maiga\, kurbu. Touré made his first guitar as a child\, constructing it from his wooden writing slate in the ancient town of Gao\, Mali. Once the heart of the Songhaï empire and burial place of its Askia kings\, the town rests between the Niger and the encroaching ocean of sand known as the Sahara Desert. The Songhai empire was the last of the great empires of the Sahel\, reaching its zenith under Soni Alibert (Sunni Ali) in the mid 400’s. Sidi Touré was born here in 1959\, but to be born a Touré\, a noble family who trace their lineage directly from the Askia kings\, carried a significance and onus of a past that reaches directly into the present. Like another Malian noble turned singer\, Salif Keita\, Sidi Touré faced a conflict between the inexorable pull of music and the expectations of family and society. Touré’s family had been sung about\, and sung to\, by traditional griots for centuries\, but until a small boy challenged the rules\, the Touré’s did not sing!

Transition initiatives work with deliberation and good cheer to create a fulfilling and inspiring local way of life that can withstand the shocks of rapidly shifting global systems.

DESCRIPTION:A coalition of local community groups is launching Freedom Square–just up the block from the Sanctuary–with free outdoor live music. We call the collaboration between The Sanctuary for Independent Media\, Missing Link Street Ministry\, Troy Bike Rescue and Collard City Growers the Freedom Square Coalition- named after the grassy spot where 5th and 6th Avenues meet 101st Street a block from the Sanctuary. We think of Freedom Square as an urban cultural and spiritual oasis\, so we were pleased to inaugurate it with a special afternoon of food\, bikes and music on the July 4th weekend.  \n\n\n\nAll the way from Boston is Debo Band\, a 10-piece Ethiopian soul group. The Debo Band is not your mother’s Ethiopian dance band. Expect searing horns\, crooning vocals\, and slinky funk grooves. Dubbed out violin and accordion. Bass-heavy\, brazen\, and dense. Led by Ethiopian-American saxophonist Danny Mekonnen and fronted by charismatic vocalist Bruck Tesfaye\, Debo’s performances bring together the best of the last forty years of Ethiopian music\, with a reverence for the vintage sounds of the 1970s and a commitment to discovering contemporary gems\, as well as developing new compositions. They’re stopping in Troy on their way back to Boston from a performance at the Montreal Jazz Festival. Don’t worry–if you miss this show\, you can catch them in August at Lincoln Center in NYC. Also on the lineup\, homegrown talent from Troy’s own Missing Link Mens Chorus (gospel)\, S.K.A.T.E. DESCRIPTION:We’ve got new neighbors!!!! Welcome!! Troy Bike Rescue is moving to North Troy.  What began as a pile of old bikes and a series of parking lot workshops has evolved into a group of dedicated volunteers running and maintaining regular shops in both Albany and Troy.  This bike month\, they will be moving the Troy workshop to North Troy and holding a blowout bike party Fun(d)raiser at the Sanctuary for Independent Media to support their efforts.  The event begins with a bike rodeo for kids and adults\, followed by a silent art auction\, raffles\, dinner\, and a program of short films and music MC’d by TBRs core collective members. There will be home-cooked vegetarian food\, many artworks donated by local and regional artists\, and raffle prizes from local bike shops and other restaurants. [This event would later be dubbed BikeFest.]

DESCRIPTION:In the powerful 2010 documentary Not Just a Game: Power Politics & American Sports (based on Zirin’s best-selling book\, The People’s History of Sports in the United States)\, author and activist Dave Zirin argues that\, far from providing merely escapist entertainment\, American sports have long been at the center of some of the major political debates and struggles of our time. We’ve been told again and again that sports and politics don’t mix\, that games are just games and athletes should just “shut up and play.” But according to Zirin\, this notion is just flat-out wrong.  In a fascinating tour of the good\, the bad\, and the ugly of American sports culture\, Zirin first traces how American sports have glamorized militarism\, racism\, sexism\, and homophobia\, then excavates a largely forgotten history of rebel athletes who stood up to power and fought for social justice beyond the field of play. The result is as deeply moving as it is exhilarating: nothing less than an alternative history of political struggle in the United States as seen through the games its people have played. Screening and Q&A preceded by a community BBQ dinner.
