Incorporating interviews and media footage from the earliest days of the AIDS panic through the present\, Sex in an Epidemic reminds us that\, though the world has been living with the realities of HIV/AIDS for nearly 30 years\, ignorance and prejudice about the disease must still be combated.

SUMMARY:Either/Orchestra: "The Collected Unconscious"
DESCRIPTION:A return visit by the internationally renowned 10-piece jazz ensemble that combines the agility and freedom of a jazz combo\, the raw power and subtle coloring of a jazz orchestra\, and the deep grooves of Afro-Latin music\, premiering a new suite commissioned by Chamber Music America. This concert is part of a four date mini-tour to premiere The Collected Unconscious\, a new suite composed by band founder Gershon and based in the pentatonic modes of and triple rhythms of Ethiopian music.  \n\n\n\nThe language of the suite goes far beyond those parameters\, recalling Ellington\, Mingus\, Tito Puente and others in its broad scope. Based on a sneak preview in Cambridge MA\, audiences will find it moving and nostalgic as well as hot\, exciting and challenging.  \n\n\n\nTom Halter – trumpet; Dan Rosenthal – trumpet; Joel Yennior – trombone; Hailey Niswanger – alto saxophone\, flute; Russ Gershon – tenor\, soprano saxophone; Charlie Kohlhase – baritone saxophone; Gilson Schachnik – piano\, organ; Rick McLaughlin – bass; Pablo Bencid – drums; Vicente Lebron – congas\, percussion.  \n\n\n\nCo-sponsored by the Arts Department at Rensselaer\, part of iEAR presents!

DESCRIPTION:In 2003\, on the eve of the Iraq war\, director Iara Lee embarked on a journey to better understand a world increasingly embroiled in conflict and\, as she saw it\, heading for self-destruction. After several years\, traveling over five continents\, Iara encountered growing numbers of people who committed their lives to promoting change. This is their story.  \n\n\n\nFrom Iran\, where graffiti and rap became tools in fighting government repression\, to Burma\, where monks acting in the tradition of Gandhi take on a dictatorship\, moving on to Brazil\, where musicians reach out to slum kids and transform guns into guitars\, and ending in Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon\, where photography\, music\, and film have given a voice to those rarely heard\, filmmaker Iara Lee’s Cultures of Resistance (2010) explores how art and creativity can be ammunition in the battle for peace and justice.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception for Underground Gallery Exhibition: "Media Nodes" Photos by Sean Hemmerle
DESCRIPTION:Media Nodes was born of award-winning photographer Sean Hemmerle’s desire to document the news media in the midst of an historic transformation. “People throw around this word all the time\, mostly disparagingly: ‘oh\, the media\,’ and ‘media spin\,” he says. “That made me think: who is the media? And what about the media? I wanted to put a face on these media nodes\, the places where news is ‘made’ if you will.” This world-premiere exhibition of the eight-year project Media Nodes was originally published in the Columbia Journalism Review. It is a view behind the curtain\, beyond the front page\, to the interior landscape of an industry in transition.
