DESCRIPTION:Night of the Living Dead premiered on October 1\, 1968\, and was completed on a $114\,000 budget. The film became a financial success\, grossing $12 million domestically and $18 million internationally. Sound System takes the stage. M.A.K.U. is a New York-based Afro-Colombian band inflected with jazz\, rock\, hip-hop\, punk\, and Colombian folkloric rhythms. This event is the inaugural event at Freedom Square!

Taking a Chance on God (2011) follows the extraordinary life of 87-year-old John McNeill from his Buffalo\, NY boyhood through his experiences as a Prisoner of War in Nazi Germany\, his Le Moyne College years as Jesuit professor and Vietnam peace promoter\, leading gay rights advocate\, and loving partner of 47 years to Charles Chiarelli. McNeill\, author\, founder of the LGBT Catholic group Dignity/New York\, and a gay community leader during the AIDS crisis of the 1980s\, refused to be silenced by the Vatican on LGBT issues. This resulted in his expulsion from the Jesuit priesthood.

SUMMARY:"Herman’s House" with Filmmaker Angad Bhalla
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of an acclaimed documentary that explores the injustice of solitary confinement and the transformative power of art. There will be a full scale model of a solitary confinement cell on display. Herman’s House tells the story of Herman Joshua Wallace\, who has spent the past 40 years in solitary confinement at Louisiana’s notorious Angola Prison Farm. At the urging of artist Jackie Sumell\, Wallace\, working by letter and occasionally phone\, designs his own post-prison house. The film follows their unique creative partnership\, as Sumell builds an exhibit based on Herman’s story\, complete with plans for the house and a full-scale model of the cell. The story takes a turn when Sumell sets out to build a bricks-and-mortar structure for Herman and authorities decide to review his case. A panel discussion on the film and the arbitrary\, inhumane and unsafe use of solitary confinement in New York State will follow the screening. The event is sponsored by the NYCLU\, New York Council of Churches\, National Religious Campaign Against Torture and Prisoners Legal Services.

A member of Zimbabwe’s Kore Kore tribe\, he sings in the nation’s dominant Shona language as well as Ndebele and English.

Tobocman will present a spoken word and multimedia event with live music\, featuring Andy Laties (sax) and Eric Blitz (drums). Susan Deer Cloud\, who is a mixed lineage Catskill Indian of Mohawk/Blackfoot and some Seneca lineage\, will present her poetry.

SUMMARY:Be The Media! Workshop with Dee Dee Halleck: Freedom to Connect
DESCRIPTION:What is the structure of the vast World Wide Web? Who owns the wires? Who controls access? As education\, creativity and science become more dependent on this technology\, it is crucial that people globally participate in the protection and development of open infrastructure and a democratic base for Internet governance. To explore infrastructure and governance\, and stake back the claims for free speech\, this workshop will include: a report back from DeeDee Halleck on ICANN – the “multi-stake holder” world of domain regulation; and a report back from Steve Pierce and David Banks on Freedom to Connect: public nets and access.  \n\n\n\nOrganized by legendary media activist DeeDee Halleck\, as part of the Changing the Climate: (r)Evolution for Social and Environmental Justice. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBe The Media! workshops teach multimedia skills to community members in order to develop urgently needed independent local voices. Our goal is to empower the public through independent media making\, supplying them with the tools to tell their own stories through different mediums of media including video\, radio and journalism.

DESCRIPTION:Author Russell Maroon Shoatz and breaking out of the prison industrial complex: a book launch event for Maroon the Implacable. The evening features presentations by Colia Clark\, Theresa Shoatz\, and Milk Not Jails\, plus a welcome to the Sanctuary by Pastor Willy of Missing Link Street Ministry.  \n\n\n\nRussell Maroon Shoatz is a political prisoner who has been held for more than thirty years\, including two decades in solitary confinement. He was active as a leader in the Black Liberation Movement in Philadelphia\, both above and underground. His successful escapes from maximum-security prisons earned him the title “Maroon.” This is the first published collection of his accumulated written works\, and also includes new essays written expressly for this volume. Preceded by a community potluck and exhibition opening.  \n\n\n\nAn opening event for Changing the Climate: (r)Evolution for Social and Environmental Justice\, a 3-day convergence at The Sanctuary for Independent Media.
