DESCRIPTION:Join us Thursday\, July 25 from 12:00 – 1:30 for Community Discussion to brainstorm key nodes for community mapping in North Troy! In this 3-day workshop (7/30/13-8/2/13)\, we will explore what adaptive biological networks in P. polycephalum plasmodia can teach us about the way that we inhabit\, design\, and shape urban communities. By focusing on the social analogy of individual cells coming together to form a complex\, intelligent multicellular organism—the network—we can investigate how cities grow and connect\, how the people and life that inhabit them move through these networks\, and how the configuration of these networks may affect public health\, prosperity\, demographics\, and mobility. Exploring the complex and graceful division of labor employed by these social amoebae (some cells form the stalk\, others form the spores that will propagate future generations) we can talk about the importance of community in sustainable design and thriving lives. Part of the “BioArt in the Industrial Wasteland” series\, funded by the National Endowment for the Arts.

DESCRIPTION:Soul Power (2008) documentary by Jeffrey Levy-Hinte celebrates the legendary music festival that accompanied “The Rumble in the Jungle” between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman. In 1974\, the most celebrated American R&B acts of the time came together with the most renowned musical groups in Africa for a 12-hour\, three-night long concert held in Kinshasa\, Zaire. The dream-child of Hugh Masekela and Stewart Levine\, this music festival became a reality when they convinced boxing promoter Don King to combine the event with “The Rumble in the Jungle\,” the epic fight between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman\, previously chronicled in the Academy Award-winning documentary When We Were Kings.

This presentation is made possible by funding from the NYS Council on the Arts\, the National Endowment for the Arts and the City of Troy as well as volunteer labor and small financial contributions from thousands of patrons of The Sanctuary for Independent Media.

DESCRIPTION:Natalie Jeremijenko will lead the community to begin building a public art sculpture\, Butterfly Bridge. The bridge will demonstrate possibilities of re-imagining our urban infrastructure\, and guide us towards a bio-diverse ecosystem – one upon which our own health critically depends.  A Moth Cinema will be integrated into the structure\, revealing the nightly dramas of love\, survival and the fluttering lifestyles of the dark and mysterious.  This art installation will reveal the fragility of humans’ and insects’ eco systems\, as part of an Environmental Clinic for ‘curing’ our local ecologies through citizen participation. The workshop is in collaboration with “Found Art in North Troy” during Uptown Summer\, a 5-week series of public arts workshops designed to enhance livability through creative place-making.  “Bioart in an Industrial Wasteland” and “Found Art in North Troy” are funded by the National Endowment of the Arts\, with additional support from NYSCA\, community organizations and volunteers.

DESCRIPTION:Night of the Living Dead premiered on October 1\, 1968\, and was completed on a $114\,000 budget. The film became a financial success\, grossing $12 million domestically and $18 million internationally. Night of the Living Dead was heavily criticized at its release owing to explicit content\, but eventually garnered critical acclaim and has been selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry as a film deemed “culturally\, historically or aesthetically significant.” Andrew Alden Ensemble is Andrew Alden\, composer and piano synthesizer; Beltran Del Campo\, violin/viola; Nat Saralamba\, electric guitar; Ryan Masecar\, drums/percussion.

Sound System takes the stage. M.A.K.U. is a New York-based Afro-Colombian band inflected with jazz\, rock\, hip-hop\, punk\, and Colombian folkloric rhythms. This event is the inaugural event at Freedom Square!

DESCRIPTION:Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens creator and artist-in-residence Isaiah Zagar will lead the community in a two-day workshop to transform the Freedom Square Art Stage! Under his direction we will complete an original mural mosaic\, incorporating found material and ceramic tiles crafted by members of community youth and school groups. Participants will work on the mosaic from conception to completion.  \n\n\n\nLearn the art of breaking tile\, cutting mirror\, gluing\, grouting and more! Students will help beautify our North Troy neighborhood by completing a permanent\, public mosaic mural at Freedom Square – creating a shimmering backdrop for a new art stage.

Taking a Chance on God (2011) follows the extraordinary life of 87-year-old John McNeill from his Buffalo\, NY boyhood through his experiences as a Prisoner of War in Nazi Germany\, his Le Moyne College years as Jesuit professor and Vietnam peace promoter\, leading gay rights advocate\, and loving partner of 47 years to Charles Chiarelli. McNeill\, author\, founder of the LGBT Catholic group Dignity/New York\, and a gay community leader during the AIDS crisis of the 1980s\, refused to be silenced by the Vatican on LGBT issues. This resulted in his expulsion from the Jesuit priesthood.

SUMMARY:"Herman’s House" with Filmmaker Angad Bhalla
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of an acclaimed documentary that explores the injustice of solitary confinement and the transformative power of art. There will be a full scale model of a solitary confinement cell on display. Herman’s House tells the story of Herman Joshua Wallace\, who has spent the past 40 years in solitary confinement at Louisiana’s notorious Angola Prison Farm. At the urging of artist Jackie Sumell\, Wallace\, working by letter and occasionally phone\, designs his own post-prison house. The film follows their unique creative partnership\, as Sumell builds an exhibit based on Herman’s story\, complete with plans for the house and a full-scale model of the cell. The story takes a turn when Sumell sets out to build a bricks-and-mortar structure for Herman and authorities decide to review his case. A panel discussion on the film and the arbitrary\, inhumane and unsafe use of solitary confinement in New York State will follow the screening. The event is sponsored by the NYCLU\, New York Council of Churches\, National Religious Campaign Against Torture and Prisoners Legal Services.

DESCRIPTION:Documentary filmmaker Louis Massiah\, along with the Be the Media! artist/educators (Jim deSeve\, Andrew Lynn and Branda Miller) will be part of this workshop have designed this workshop for community groups serious about creating something!  \n\n\n\nThis workshop is for community groups to use media about their work\, representatives (youth\, adult\, elders) will be asked to bring some object or archive material (photo\, audio\, document\, home movie). We’ll create a simple framework to produce a short independent video which shines light on the community. Historians\, media makers and musicians who want to help facilitate are welcome!
