SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening at the Underground Gallery: "Female Vets Speak" with Women from Guardian House (10/17/13-12/03/13)
DESCRIPTION:From 2012-13\, women from Guardian House- a transitional home for female veterans in Ballston Spa attended photography and writing workshops that documented their lives after serving in the military. Some of the women were active duty and others were not; however\, similarities in their experiences were powerful and created lasting friendships. As one participant reflected\, “Why did it take this class to talk about our experiences as women in the military? It seems that being in the military is a natural topic for men to talk openly about\, but not for women!” The women speak of long dark journeys\, homelessness and hope\, struggles and personal strength. As they reflect upon being looked at but not seen\, their powerful photographs and poetic prose offer lights of hope. Hear from Ed Murphy\, Executive Director of Workforce Development Institute\, Vickie Kereszi\, Art of Labor Manager\, and participants\, to learn the stories and process of this amazing project! Exhibition on view in the Underground Gallery through December 3\, 2013. Co-sponsored by Workforce Development Institute.

The once-banned\, African-influenced music of the Creole descendants of slaves who worked the sugar plantations\, maloya is a blues-like music rooted in the work songs and chants of the island’s African slaves. Rising up from a troubled childhood on the streets of Saint-Denis\, Salem has become the greatest living champion of maloya\, infusing the trance-inducing blend of voices and percussion with fresh inspiration and contemporary influences.

DESCRIPTION:Join us Thursday\, July 25 from 12:00 – 1:30 for Community Discussion to brainstorm key nodes for community mapping in North Troy! In this 3-day workshop (7/30/13-8/2/13)\, we will explore what adaptive biological networks in P. polycephalum plasmodia can teach us about the way that we inhabit\, design\, and shape urban communities. By focusing on the social analogy of individual cells coming together to form a complex\, intelligent multicellular organism—the network—we can investigate how cities grow and connect\, how the people and life that inhabit them move through these networks\, and how the configuration of these networks may affect public health\, prosperity\, demographics\, and mobility. Exploring the complex and graceful division of labor employed by these social amoebae (some cells form the stalk\, others form the spores that will propagate future generations) we can talk about the importance of community in sustainable design and thriving lives. Part of the “BioArt in the Industrial Wasteland” series\, funded by the National Endowment for the Arts.

DESCRIPTION:Soul Power (2008) documentary by Jeffrey Levy-Hinte celebrates the legendary music festival that accompanied “The Rumble in the Jungle” between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman. In 1974\, the most celebrated American R&B acts of the time came together with the most renowned musical groups in Africa for a 12-hour\, three-night long concert held in Kinshasa\, Zaire. The dream-child of Hugh Masekela and Stewart Levine\, this music festival became a reality when they convinced boxing promoter Don King to combine the event with “The Rumble in the Jungle\,” the epic fight between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman\, previously chronicled in the Academy Award-winning documentary When We Were Kings.

DESCRIPTION:Natalie Jeremijenko will lead the community to begin building a public art sculpture\, Butterfly Bridge. The bridge will demonstrate possibilities of re-imagining our urban infrastructure\, and guide us towards a bio-diverse ecosystem – one upon which our own health critically depends.  A Moth Cinema will be integrated into the structure\, revealing the nightly dramas of love\, survival and the fluttering lifestyles of the dark and mysterious.  This art installation will reveal the fragility of humans’ and insects’ eco systems\, as part of an Environmental Clinic for ‘curing’ our local ecologies through citizen participation. The workshop is in collaboration with “Found Art in North Troy” during Uptown Summer\, a 5-week series of public arts workshops designed to enhance livability through creative place-making.  “Bioart in an Industrial Wasteland” and “Found Art in North Troy” are funded by the National Endowment of the Arts\, with additional support from NYSCA\, community organizations and volunteers.

DESCRIPTION:Night of the Living Dead premiered on October 1\, 1968\, and was completed on a $114\,000 budget. The film became a financial success\, grossing $12 million domestically and $18 million internationally. Night of the Living Dead was heavily criticized at its release owing to explicit content\, but eventually garnered critical acclaim and has been selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry as a film deemed “culturally\, historically or aesthetically significant.” Andrew Alden Ensemble is Andrew Alden\, composer and piano synthesizer; Beltran Del Campo\, violin/viola; Nat Saralamba\, electric guitar; Ryan Masecar\, drums/percussion.

SUMMARY:Inaugural Freedom Festival and Juneteenth Celebration
DESCRIPTION:This event celebrates diverse freedom movements\, and is inspired by Juneteenth\, the oldest national commemoration of the abolition of slavery in the United States. The festival features performances by Taína Asili y la Banda Rebelde and M.A.K.U.   \n\n\n\nAt 3 pm\, Troy Bike Rescue will hold a bike clinic and bike schwag art workshop.  \n\n\n\nAt 4 pm\, we will host a community potluck and hold the inauguration of Freedom Square.  \n\n\n\nAt 5 pm\, Puerto Rican vocalist Taína Asili y la Banda Rebelde performs\, carrying on the tradition of her ancestors\, fusing past and present struggles into one soulful and defiant voice.  \n\n\n\nAt 6:30 pm\, M.A.K.U. Sound System takes the stage. M.A.K.U. is a New York-based Afro-Colombian band inflected with jazz\, rock\, hip-hop\, punk\, and Colombian folkloric rhythms. This event is the inaugural event at Freedom Square!

DESCRIPTION:Join food artist Ellie Markovitch\, as she shares her secrets with this delicious recipe! Feijoada is a delicious stew of beans.  In Brazil\, feijoada (feijoada brasileira) is often considered the national dish. The name comes from feijão\, Portugese for “beans.” This workshop continues KitchenSanctuary’s themes of cooking nutritious food on a budget for large groups of people.   \n\n\n\nThe beans will be served later that day on Freedom Square\, as the community gathers with artist Isaiah Zagar for the Mosaic Art Workshop!

SUMMARY:Found Art Mosaic Mural Workshop with Isaiah Zagar
DESCRIPTION:Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens creator and artist-in-residence Isaiah Zagar will lead the community in a two-day workshop to transform the Freedom Square Art Stage! Under his direction we will complete an original mural mosaic\, incorporating found material and ceramic tiles crafted by members of community youth and school groups. Participants will work on the mosaic from conception to completion.  \n\n\n\nLearn the art of breaking tile\, cutting mirror\, gluing\, grouting and more! Students will help beautify our North Troy neighborhood by completing a permanent\, public mosaic mural at Freedom Square – creating a shimmering backdrop for a new art stage.
