In addition to a TBR bike gift-away\, there will be family activities including food and baked goods\, ornament-making\, skits\, a coat raffle and a tree lighting at 5pm in Freedom Square (at the corner of 101st and 5th/6th Avenue). The coats have been generously donated through a partnership with the Champlain Rotary and Troy City Hall.

SUMMARY:"Let the Fire Burn" with Filmmaker Jason Osder
DESCRIPTION:Presented by filmmaker Jason Osder\, Let the Fire Burn is the chilling saga of Philadelphia’s 1985 decision to drop a bomb on black liberation group MOVE\, told using only archival news coverage and interviews. Eleven were killed and 61 buildings burned in one of the most tumultuous clashes between government and citizens. In the astonishingly gripping Let the Fire Burn (2013)\, director Osder has crafted that rarest of cinematic objects: a found-footage film that unfurls with the tension of a great thriller. On May 13\, 1985\, a longtime feud between the City of Philadelphia and controversial radical urban group MOVE came to a deadly climax. By order of local authorities\, police dropped military-grade explosives onto a MOVE-occupied row-house. TV cameras captured the conflagration that quickly escalated. It was only later discovered that authorities decided to “…let the fire burn.” The screening will be proceeded by a community potluck.

Just as the term DNA fingerprinting has led to misinformation regarding its efficacy\, DNA evidence is also hyperbolized in popular culture. DESCRIPTION:Join the Sanctuary for a two-day Be The Media! workshop with Bio-Artist Paul Vanouse. Polymerase Chain Reaction is a technology of “self-discovery\,” or less optimistically\, authoritarian identification. CR has replaced the original DNA fingerprinting methods in many cases\, including massive government DNA databases such as the US FBI’s CODIS project. With a DIY Laboratory created in the Sanctuary cafe\, artist Vanouse will guide participants through the process of DNA extraction\, amplification\, and photography. We’ll learn the processes of how the criminal justice manipulates these techniques\, and how misinformation in popular culture about DNA fingerprinting endangers personal privacy and criminalizes people of color and low-income populations. Participants who participate in the full process will receive a free t-shirt with their DNA profile!

DESCRIPTION:From 2012-13\, women from Guardian House- a transitional home for female veterans in Ballston Spa attended photography and writing workshops that documented their lives after serving in the military. Some of the women were active duty and others were not; however\, similarities in their experiences were powerful and created lasting friendships. As one participant reflected\, “Why did it take this class to talk about our experiences as women in the military? It seems that being in the military is a natural topic for men to talk openly about\, but not for women!” The women speak of long dark journeys\, homelessness and hope\, struggles and personal strength. As they reflect upon being looked at but not seen\, their powerful photographs and poetic prose offer lights of hope. Hear from Ed Murphy\, Executive Director of Workforce Development Institute\, Vickie Kereszi\, Art of Labor Manager\, and participants\, to learn the stories and process of this amazing project! Rising up from a troubled childhood on the streets of Saint-Denis\, Salem has become the greatest living champion of maloya\, infusing the trance-inducing blend of voices and percussion with fresh inspiration and contemporary influences.

DESCRIPTION:Several of the most exciting talents in hip hop music will stop in Troy NY for “Bend the Bars with Beats\,” a free all-ages show in Freedom Square beginning at 5 PM on Saturday\, August 3\, 2013. Freedom Square is located at 39 5th Avenue\, where 101st Street meets 5th and 6th Avenues in North Troy.  Bring lawn blankets and chairs; the rain location is The Sanctuary for Independent Media\, 3361 6th Avenue (at 101st Street). Featured artists include Rebel Diaz\, Baam Bada\, S.K.A.T.E. and DJ Trumastr with DJ Cold Cut. “Bend the Bars with Beats” is co-sponsored by the NYS Prisoner Justice Network.

SUMMARY:Be The Media! and NATURE Lab 3-day Workshop with Blaine O’Neill: Community Mapping with Slime Mold
DESCRIPTION:Join us Thursday\, July 25 from 12:00 – 1:30 for Community Discussion to brainstorm key nodes for community mapping in North Troy! In this 3-day workshop (7/30/13-8/2/13)\, we will explore what adaptive biological networks in P. polycephalum plasmodia can teach us about the way that we inhabit\, design\, and shape urban communities. By focusing on the social analogy of individual cells coming together to form a complex\, intelligent multicellular organism—the network—we can investigate how cities grow and connect\, how the people and life that inhabit them move through these networks\, and how the configuration of these networks may affect public health\, prosperity\, demographics\, and mobility. Exploring the complex and graceful division of labor employed by these social amoebae (some cells form the stalk\, others form the spores that will propagate future generations) we can talk about the importance of community in sustainable design and thriving lives. Part of the “BioArt in the Industrial Wasteland” series\, funded by the National Endowment for the Arts.
