DESCRIPTION:Join filmmaker Craig Saddlemire for a screening of his critically acclaimed and thought-provoking documentary film\, Household. An extended refugee family from Somalia\, an interracial same-sex couple\, a single mother in a housing cooperative\, and a mother of six who has fostered nearly 50 children in her lifetime… None of these families have ever met each other before\, but at the invitation of a mutual friend and videomaker\, that will soon change. To explore how his friends and neighbors are defining family for themselves today\, Craig Saddlemire requested that four different households in his community allow him to document their routines and challenges. In addition to sharing their personal stories\, members from each family volunteered to research and narrate the story of a different family in the project. Through food\, finances\, and sibling disputes\, Household presents an ever-shifting perspective on the enduring bonds of kinship. It reveals what it means to be a family member by choice\, by birth\, and by circumstance. Co-sponsored by iEAR Presents! \n\n\n\nABOUT THE FILMMAKER \n\n\n\nCraig Saddlemire is an independent filmmaker who founded his production company\, Round Point Movies\, in 2004. Throughout his career\, Craig has explored the potential of film to be a participatory medium at all levels of the process\, as well as effectively upset oppressive cultural myths and misrepresentations in popular media. From developing a concept to recording and even exhibiting a video\, he is constantly exploring how the subject of a movie can be empowered as an agent of knowledge\, rather than the object of the director’s gaze. Combining observational and interactive modes of production\, Craig produces documentaries that\, in the tradition of Jean Rouch\, are not merely recording reality\, but in fact are producing new forms of reality that would not exist absent the camera. Household\, his latest film\, joins a filmography that includes the feature-length documentaries Neighbor by Neighbor (2009)\, about community opposition to a four-lane boulevard\, and De-Interlaced (2005)\, about mass media.

He is the founding director of SymbioticA\, which he co-founded in 2000\, an artistic research centre housed within the School of Anatomy\, Physiology and Human Biology\, The University of Western Australia. In his presentation\, Oron Catts will draw on his extensive experience of using tissue engineering for non-medical and artistic ends to speculate about what leads to these applications and their possible future development and applications. Avoiding utopian and dystopian postures\, opting instead to present scenarios open to be contestably challenged\, this talk will also highlight some philosophical and ethical considerations stemming from new technological approaches to life\, relating fields such as synthetic biology and metagenomics. DESCRIPTION:Join Oron Catts (who will be presenting his BioArt work later in the evening) and Kathy High in an informal walk-through of “Ecological Interventions” and celebrate the launching of NATURE Lab! Internationally-renowned environmental artists Brandon Ballengée (U.S.) and Oliver Kellhammer (Canada) care deeply about our ecology and our future. Their projects explore how we as citizens of the world can change our impact on the environment. The exhibition shows photographic evidence of their experiments and explorations. Ballengée works with aquatic systems\, rivers\, streams\, swamps\, to look at the biodiversity of our waterways and how to repair and deal with pollutants. Kellhammer is a permaculturalist who has worked over years to plant the earth with remediating vegetation. Kellhammer and Ballengée have a mission to help us all learn how to interact with our environments\, and look for signs of damage to aid in the repair that is necessary. Both artists are determined to teach citizens to become scientific investigators able to change their local ecosystems. SUMMARY:NATURE Lab Workshop with Oron Catts: In the Lab
DESCRIPTION:NATURE Lab\, in collaboration with the Arts Department at RPI\, is offering the following workshop the day before his speaking event on 3/19/14. Catts will lead this workshop which will cover some of the main techniques of regenerative biology that are used for in vitro meat and will explore the broader cultural and artistic implication of using living tissue within non-medical context.The idea of growing products rather than manufacturing them has been explored and critiqued through the notion of the semi-living by the Tissue Culture and Art Project (TC&A) since 1996. It stems from the developments in biomedical research in the 1990s\, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine specifically. The premise was that we can evoke the latent regenerative abilities of the biological body to grow organs and tissues either inside or outside of the biological or techno-scientific bodies. Like with synthetic biology\, the engineering mindset of making products out of living being needs to be scrutinized. In the context of tissue engineering\, in-vitro meat and in-vitro leather are two of the main examples. Oron Catts has grown both meat and leather using tissue engineering and was the first person to grow and eat a piece of in-vitro meat.

SUMMARY:"Let the Fire Burn" with Filmmaker Jason Osder
DESCRIPTION:Presented by filmmaker Jason Osder\, Let the Fire Burn is the chilling saga of Philadelphia’s 1985 decision to drop a bomb on black liberation group MOVE\, told using only archival news coverage and interviews. Eleven were killed and 61 buildings burned in one of the most tumultuous clashes between government and citizens. In the astonishingly gripping Let the Fire Burn (2013)\, director Osder has crafted that rarest of cinematic objects: a found-footage film that unfurls with the tension of a great thriller. On May 13\, 1985\, a longtime feud between the City of Philadelphia and controversial radical urban group MOVE came to a deadly climax. By order of local authorities\, police dropped military-grade explosives onto a MOVE-occupied row-house. TV cameras captured the conflagration that quickly escalated. It was only later discovered that authorities decided to “…let the fire burn.” The screening will be proceeded by a community potluck.

DESCRIPTION:With his 2010 World Cup performance before a billion people in Johannesburg\, South Africa\, Vieux Farka Touré has become one of the most celebrated African guitarists in history. Dubbed the “Hendrix of the Sahara” by critics\, Vieux Farka Touré is a guitar master–but he also plays the African kora\, a combination drum and string instrument\, and several other traditional African instruments. He mixes tradition from his roots in Mali\, and inspiration from his father\, Grammy-award winning Ali Farka Touré\, with American blues and jazz. DESCRIPTION:Remember the OJ Simpson case? This talk is designed to creatively counter mass-media dramatizations that typically misinform the public\, and provide audiences with the conceptual tools to understand current issues surrounding use of DNA imaging and databasing. Just as the term DNA fingerprinting has led to misinformation regarding its efficacy\, DNA evidence is also hyperbolized in popular culture. The “CSI effect” is a reference to the phenomenon of shows such as the CSI franchise overstating the accuracy of forensic techniques\, and exaggerating the abilities of forensic science.  Part of the “Bioart in an Industrial Wasteland” project. SUMMARY:Be The Media! Two Day Workshop with Paul Vanouse: North Troy Subject Inversion - PCR by Campfire\, 10/19/13 - 10/20/13
DESCRIPTION:Join the Sanctuary for a two-day Be The Media! workshop with Bio-Artist Paul Vanouse. Polymerase Chain Reaction is a technology of “self-discovery\,” or less optimistically\, authoritarian identification. CR has replaced the original DNA fingerprinting methods in many cases\, including massive government DNA databases such as the US FBI’s CODIS project. With a DIY Laboratory created in the Sanctuary cafe\, artist Vanouse will guide participants through the process of DNA extraction\, amplification\, and photography. We’ll learn the processes of how the criminal justice manipulates these techniques\, and how misinformation in popular culture about DNA fingerprinting endangers personal privacy and criminalizes people of color and low-income populations. Participants who participate in the full process will receive a free t-shirt with their DNA profile!
