SUMMARY:Uptown Summer 2014 Week 1: Mapping Our Community
DESCRIPTION:To map our community\, we began “Uptown Summer 14” presenting participatory arts workshops with neighborhood youth. In a “Mapping Our History” Scrapbook/Sampler Workshop with photo journalist Brenda Ann Kenneally\, youth had a photography lesson and took photos of their homes. The next day\, they had a tour to learn the history of their neighborhood with Kathy Sheehan of the Rensselaer County Historical Society\, and began needle-points (in the history of Victorian Troy) of the photos of their homes. Writing about sense of place and identity\, they had a poetry workshop with Cara Benson of the Millay Colony. North Troy youth also worked with new media artists LoVid\, strategizing how to create a walking video tour of their block. They ended the week in investigating how they can be change-makers in their community. In a meeting with the River Keeper\, they took their cameras to witness the effects of pollution in the Hudson River on their community. And\, they worked on urban gardens in abandoned lots\, striving to transform toxic places into green spaces!

SUMMARY:Be The Media! Workshop with Brandon Ballengée: Eco-displacements
DESCRIPTION:Environmental activist and visual artist Brandon Ballengée will work with community participants to collect specimens\, this workshop looks at the aquatic life of the Hudson River and surrounding areas. Firstly as a group we will set-up a 20 gallon aquarium with filtration and discuss the water-cycle\, pollution and habitat requirements for aquatic species. We will fill then go to the river to collect artifacts and specimens and displace them into the aquarium. Funded in part by the National Endowment of the Arts “Bio-Art in an Industrial Wasteland.”  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis program involved the creation of a Hudson River Eco-Displacement sculpture. A beautiful aquarium\, with fish from the toxic waters of the Hudson\, was installed at The Sanctuary for Independent Media. The collected found objects from the desolate beach at Ingalls Ave. Boat Launch became creative elements for the Eco-Displacement environment. This art aquarium was created by workshop participants\, including several North Troy neighborhood youth. The project planted the seed for a continued residency with Brandon and the community of Troy for with NEA Art Works support for “Urban Art Reclamations: Our Upper Hudson Heritage.” \n\n\n\nABOUT THE ARTIST: \n\n\n\nBrandon Ballengée (American\, born 1974) is a visual artist\, biologist and environmental activist based in New York. \n\n\n\nBallengée creates transdisciplinary artworks inspired from his ecological field and laboratory research. Since 1996\, a central investigation focus has been the occurrence of developmental deformities and population declines among amphibians. In 2001\, he was nominated for membership into Sigma XI\, the Scientific Research Society. In 2009\, Ballengée and SK Sessions published “Explanation for Missing Limbs in Deformed Amphibians” in the Journal of Experimental Zoology and received international media attention from the BBC and others. This scientific study was the inspiration for the book Malamp: The Occurrence of Deformities in Amphibians (published by Arts Catalyst & Yorkshire Sculpture Park\, UK) and a solo exhibition at the Royal Institution of Great Brittain (London\, England: 2010). Since 2009 he has continued his amphibian research as a visiting scientist at McGill University (Montréal\, Canada). In 2011 he was awarded a conservation leadership fellowship from the National Audubon Society’s TogetherGreen Program (USA). \n\n\n\nHis art has been featured in several major US publications\, including ARTnews\, Art in America\, The New York Times\, New Yorker\, The New York Times Magazine\, Orion\, Audubon Magazine and Sculpture. Internationally\, it was also featured in Beaux Arts (France)\, Liberation (France)\, L’Oeil (France)\, The Observer (England)\, The Guardian (England)\, Financial Times (England)\, BBC News (England)\, D’Ars (Italy)\, Domenica (Italy)\, Il Venerdi (Italy)\, The Sunday Guardian: New Dehli (India) and others.

A guitarist in Khaira Arby’s band\, he is blazing the trail for a new wave of Malian music. SUMMARY:Be The Media! Workshop with Brandon Ballengée: Love Motel for Insects: Nighttime Insect Watching and Arthropod Monitoring
DESCRIPTION:A participatory workshop on biodiversity and “ecosystem activism” designed to train amateurs to assist in art and science research. The Love Motel for Insects was a huge hit with the people that participated as they were able to learn valuable information about bugs and how they interact in nature. Each person got a hand-out with bugs labeled on the paper to determine which one was which and their role in the environment. This workshop created a temporary “Love Motel for Insects” using insect attracting lights and bait to draw in local nocturnal creatures.

SUMMARY:"The Throwaways" with Filmmakers Bhawin Suchak and Ira McKinley
DESCRIPTION:The Throwaways tells the story of ex-felon\, homeless filmmaker\, activist\, and co-director Ira McKinley\, who channels his experience of living on the streets through the lens of a video camera.  By using his unique perspective\, Ira pulls the curtain back for viewers and exposes how the current economic crisis is having a devastating effect on those who are in greatest need. The story documents his struggle to bring positive changes to his community in inner-city Albany. A gritty\, firsthand look at a reality most would rather turn away from\, The Throwaways challenges viewers to bear witness and confront the daily struggles and hopes of those living on the fringes of a society that has rejected and forgotten them. \n\n\n\nThis is more than just a film; it is an expression of the anger\, sadness\, joys\, and hopes of people who have been historically stereotyped\, silenced and marginalized by the mainstream media. Co-directed by local independent media maker Bhawin Suchak\, The Throwaways places personal narratives against the backdrop of a grassroots movement that is rising up\, using the power of the people to challenge the slashing of publicly funded programs and services in inner city communities.  Not a simple illumination of individuals at their weakest\, The Throwaways seeks to inspire and empower by telling these collective stories of struggle while showing that hope does still exist.

DESCRIPTION:Join filmmakers Joshua B. Pribanic and Melissa Troutman for a screening and discussion of their exciting documentary about shale gas\, Triple Divide. The documentary is Public Herald’s first investigations into the inevitable\, negative impacts from shale gas industrial development and how those impacts are handled by the state\, specifically the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNarrated by Academy Award nominated actor and environmental advocate Mark Ruffalo\, major findings include stark negligence and endangerment of public and environmental health due to shale gas extraction. Through personal stories\, expert interviews\, and investigation of state case files\, Triple Divide tells a cautionary tale about the corruption of a public agency meant to regulate industry and protect the public and environment. Though extraction of shale gas will one day end\, taking many “boom and bust” jobs with it\, contaminated groundwater aquifers\, polluted land\, and stories of victimization will remain. SUMMARY:Be The Media! Workshop with LoVid: QR Code Artworks
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to generate QR codes and explore creative possibilities of this medium — bridging design\, technology and craft. The final “QR Code Artworks” will be presented as public and collaborative art walks that engage audiences in experimental media as public art\, renewing appreciation of our physical surroundings.  \n\n\n\nLoVid is an interdisciplinary artist duo composed of Tali Hinkis and Kyle Lapidus. Their work includes live video installations\, sculptures\, digital prints\, patchworks\, media projects\, performances\, and video recordings. They combine many opposing elements in their work\, contrasting hard electronics with soft patchworks\, analog and digital\, or handmade and machine produced objects. This multidirectional approach is also reflected in the content of their work: romantic and aggressive\, wireless and wire-full. DESCRIPTION:Filmmaker Sean Gallagher will present Brothers of the Black List\, a documentary which tells the story behind the longest litigated civil rights case in U.S. history. It all began in September 1992\, when an elderly woman in Oneonta\, NY reported that she had been attacked in an attempted rape by a young black male who cut his hand during the altercation. This led to a college administrator at nearby SUNY Oneonta giving police a list of the names and residences of all 125 black males in town\, questioning them and demanding to see their hands. Sean will be joined by Kirk Allen and Hugh Harris-Inniss\, and attorney Scott Fein. Kirk Allen and Hugh Harris-Inniss are graduates of SUNY Oneonta and were two of the 125 students put on the Black List. Scott Fein is the lawyer who represented the students during the Black List litigation. He is a partner at Whiteman Osterman & Hanna\, a law firm based in Albany\, NY. An extended refugee family from Somalia\, an interracial same-sex couple\, a single mother in a housing cooperative\, and a mother of six who has fostered nearly 50 children in her lifetime… None of these families have ever met each other before\, but at the invitation of a mutual friend and videomaker\, that will soon change. To explore how his friends and neighbors are defining family for themselves today\, Craig Saddlemire requested that four different households in his community allow him to document their routines and challenges. In addition to sharing their personal stories\, members from each family volunteered to research and narrate the story of a different family in the project. Through food\, finances\, and sibling disputes\, Household presents an ever-shifting perspective on the enduring bonds of kinship. It reveals what it means to be a family member by choice\, by birth\, and by circumstance. Combining observational and interactive modes of production\, Craig produces documentaries that\, in the tradition of Jean Rouch\, are not merely recording reality\, but in fact are producing new forms of reality that would not exist absent the camera. Household\, his latest film\, joins a filmography that includes the feature-length documentaries Neighbor by Neighbor (2009)\, about community opposition to a four-lane boulevard\, and De-Interlaced (2005)\, about mass media.
