DESCRIPTION:Great guitars\, lightning-fast rhythms and a rotating cast of vocalists from the capital city of Niger\, West Africa’s largest nation. By the time Tal National reached international acclaim with 2013’s “Kaani\,” the band’s first release outside of Niger\, they had spent more than a decade crisscrossing their native country\, usually on dirt pathways through the Sahara\, playing epic five-hour sets\, seven days a week\, selling their CDs on street corners and roundabouts. In the process\, they became Niger’s most popular band\, with songs constantly blasted on national TV and cell phones everywhere. Following FatCat’s release of “Kaani\,” Western audiences and critics quickly embraced the band’s singular and finely-honed sound. NPR were hit by “the band’s tightness and fiery energy”; The Guardian praised “their full-tilt approach\, and hypnotic intensity”; whilst Songlines wrote of “a rich\, hybrid sound that draws on familiar West African elements to create something rewardingly fresh and different.” FatCat released the dazzling follow-up\, “Zoy Zoy\,” on April 13th.

The percussionist is one of the leaders of a new circle of young New York City musicians grounded in the African-American roots of their music and dedicated to extending it well into the new century. Comfortable in any setting from jazz club to arena concert\, Jaimeo began his drum career at age 16 with his father bassist Dartanyan Brown and mother pianist and woodwind specialist\, Marcia Miget\, and drum teacher\, Sly Randolph\, himself a Bernard Purdie protégé from Harlem. It is a magical experience. The land will need to be slightly tilled\, turned. We will invite along people who are growing ancient grains to share first-hand their knowledge. Local grain experts\, Howard Stoner\, farmer/researcher\, and Amy Halloran\, writer and grain grower\, will also contribute with the grain planting\, grain husking\, grain milling and pancake making. Also contributing will be farmer and permaculture expert\, Rebekah Rice\, of Nine Mile Farm. The workshop will be a brainstorming session on mapping the local network of actors who contribute to a regional food system. We will also start the beginnings of a seed library. In collaboration with iEAR Presents! and the Department of the Arts at RPI.

DESCRIPTION:Las Cafeteras create a vibrant musical fusion with a unique East LA sound and a community-focused political message. Their Afro-Mexican rhythms\, zapateado and inspiring lyrics tell stories of a community who is looking for love & fights for justice in the concrete jungle of Los Angeles. A remix of traditional Son Jarocho sounds\, Las Cafeteras add Afro-Caribbean marimbol and cajón\, poetry in English and Spanglish\, and instruments like jarana\, requinto\, a donkey jawbone and a wooden platform called the Tarima.
