DESCRIPTION:May is an exciting and busy month in the garden. For this workshop\, we will be reshaping beds that need sprucing\, planting a variety of seedlings\, and dividing perennials and moving the self-seeded plants to more convenient locations. \n\n\n\nPerennials are a great addition to the garden as they come back every year. At Collard City\, we enjoy a bountiful harvest of perennials such as rhubarb\, sorrel\, lovage\, walking onions\, asparagus\, horseradish and a variety of hardy herbs. Each spring\, we look forward to the return of these generous plants as they are the first to shimmy to the earth’s surface. This year\, we hope to expand our bounty\, by dividing clumps of perennials and transplanting to otherwise empty areas. The overall goal is to build a landscape that is largely self-sustaining and productive. Come and help us green the food desert\, one plant at a time!

More tba. \n\n\n\nWhat is CODEPINK?\n\n\n\nCODEPINK is a women-led grassroots organization working to end U.S. wars and militarism\, support peace and human rights initiatives\, and redirect our tax dollars into healthcare\, education\, green jobs and other life-affirming programs. \n\n\n\nWhat we do \n\n\n\nFounded in fall 2002 as a grassroots effort to prevent the US war on Iraq\, we continue to organize for justice for Iraqis and to hold war criminals accountable. We actively oppose the continuing U.S. war in Afghanistan\, torture\, the detention center at Guantanamo\, weaponized and spy drones\, the prosecution of whistleblowers\, U.S. support for the Israeli occupation of Palestine and repressive regimes. \n\n\n\nHow we do it \n\n\n\nRooted in a network of local organizers\, online supporters and generous donors\, with an emphasis on joy and humor\, our tactics include satire\, street theatre\, creative visuals\, civil resistance\, and directly challenging powerful decision-makers in government and corporations. And of course\, wearing pink! \n\n\n\nWhy women? \n\n\n\nCODEPINK is not exclusively women — we invite men to join us — but we are particularly eager to see mothers\, grandmothers\, sisters\, and daughters\, female workers\, students\, teachers\, healers\, artists\, writers\, singers\, poets and all outraged woman rise up and oppose the global militarism. \n\n\n\nCODEPINK thus emerged out of a deep desire by a group of American women to stop the United States from invading Iraq. The name CODEPINK plays on the former Bush Administration’s color-coded homeland security alerts — yellow\, orange\, red — that signaled terrorist threats. While Bush’s color-coded alerts were based on fear and were used to justify violence\, the CODEPINK alert is a feisty call for people to “wage peace.” \n\n\n\nSince then CODEPINK has become a worldwide network of women and men committed to working for peace and social justice. We have become famous for confronting the warmongers\, whether in the halls and hearing rooms of Congress\, the national conventions of both the Republicans and Democrats\, George Bush’s fundraisers\, the publicity tours of Karl Rove\, Condi Rice\, Donald Rumsfeld and others\, and Nancy Pelosi’s house. \n\n\n\nPink action principles• Nonviolence: We are committed to peaceful means of protest and resolving conflict when executing our actions\, in coalition work\, and within our internal process and relationships.• Clear Goals: We will define CODEPINK’s unique niche in our community (creative protest\, cultivating women’s voices\, etc.) and set attainable goals for local projects that will further CODEPINK’s peace mission.• Communication Guidelines: We write\, speak and listen with respect to all. Disagreements or disappointments are opportunities to practice peaceful and productive communication with each other. We keep our criticisms concise\, specific\, constructive\, and focused on future improvement. We affirm a culture of appreciation\, thanking and valuing all our activists and acknowledging donations\, co-sponsorships\, and other support.• Responsibility and Teamwork: We work in teams\, sharing tasks and responsibilities\, and building skills\, together. We agree to be responsible for something only when we’re 100% sure we are going to do it.• Diversity and Tolerance: We embrace feminist principals of cooperation\, problem-solving\, critical thinking\, compassion\, analysis and processing. We will speak up against racism\, sexism\, homophobia\, transphobia\, classism\, ageism\, and other forms of oppression and prejudice. We will work towards a deeper understanding of our own power and privileges\, and seek to cultivate a diverse local group with connections to the array of social justice groups in our cities. We highly recommend that every activist read this piece about recognizing privilege\, entitled “Unpacking the Invisible Backpack.”• Resource Sharing: Our logos\, photos\, and the downloadable resources on our website are free for local groups to use. Central staff can help send email alerts for local organizers. Local groups can endorse or cosponsor local events without seeking permission from the central staff. Local groups are autonomous and are encouraged to take on national campaigns.• Messaging: We will work to make the messages on our banners\, flyers\, and public/ social media statements clear and potent. We aim to amplify our work through positive media coverage — for example\, sending press releases\, conducting press calls and liaising at events\, providing talking points for participants\, media training for local groups\, etc.• Global Community: CODEPINK’s work to end the war in Iraq was shared by 250 local groups in the US and a dozen international groups. The solidarity between CODEPINK-ers in the US and overseas strengthens our work to end US wars and drone strikes\, curtail government surveillance\, bring justice to war victims\, and reduce militarism worldwide. CODEPINK has taken delegations to Cuba\, Iran\, Israel-Palestine and other conflict zones to promote global and cultural engagement and awareness. DESCRIPTION:Slowly but surely we’re getting underway with local programming at WOOC 105.3 FM now that our technical issues have more or less stabilized. (At the moment we’re running syndicated news & public affairs shows from Pacifica Radio during drive time\, and a reggae/world music mix otherwise.) We’re hoping to start local programming Monday-Friday afternoons SOON with a block of regional news and public affairs daily for an hour (or two\, depending how our capacity develops) across the week during drive time.  \n\n\n\nAs a final workshop for this season\, the focus will be on Program and Audience Development. For now\, we’ll be focusing all of our radio resources on developing these collectively-produced drive time programs. The content will be local and regional with a global perspective\, taking on the kinds of issues we’ve been highlighting over the past decade with our Sanctuary programming.

SUMMARY:Uptown Summer 2016
DESCRIPTION:Now in our 6th year of collaboration with Rensselaer County Summer Youth Employment\, Uptown Summer begins. Uptown Summer is a 5-week program that gives voice to North Troy’s teens. Our ten students work as Neighborhood Storytellers and Environmental Stewards. Each day\, we hold a planning meeting\, then spend the morning working greening our block in the Collard City Growers gardens. At lunch we eat healthy meals that feature our urban homegrown harvest\, and our afternoons are spent producing original media… \n\n\n\nThis summer\, youth created documentaries on abandoned buildings\, which were featured in the public art project Breathing Lights.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDocumentaries\n\n\n\n“Jerry’s House\,” by Kai Griffin\, Bryanna Mangual\, Diajah Grier\, Milan Miles\, and Andrew Pintro\, tells the story of a family forced out of a deteriorating rental “now abandoned”\, with a happy ending of owning a home.  \n\n\n\n“Safer than Yemen?” by Bryan Mangual\, Rachel Lord\, and Arianna Young\, explores violence through the lens of a corner bodega\, opened by 1920s Italian immigrants\, now transferred to Yemeni owners.  \n\n\n\n“Orange and Lex\,” by Shatora Buckman\, Jahsendah Dann\, and Ayisha Menko\, shares a razed childhood neighborhood.  \n\n\n\n“Sadie’s Grandma’s House\,” by Sadie Anson\, recounts restoring a vacant building into a loving home.  \n\n\n\n“Abandoned Building Haikus” were also created\, in collaboration with the “Breathing These Words” poetry workshop. Produced by Media Mentors Jamel Mosely\, Kathy High\, and Branda Miller. \n\n\n\nAbout our youth employees\n\n\n\nFor many of our teens\, Uptown Summer is their first workplace experience and they are confronted with adult professional expectations for the first time (arriving on time\, working effectively\, communicating clearly\, etc.). Our youth work side-by-side with community leaders\, media professionals\, renowned artists\, college professors\, urban gardeners\, nutritionists\, local volunteers\, and others. We work together to repair the environmental damage done to this block through years of neglect and industrial pollutants and to tell homegrown stories of hope and justice. We build confidence and broaden perspective. SUMMARY:Mamadou Kelly in Freedom Square
DESCRIPTION:Mamadou Kelly hails from Goundam and Niafunke\, in the heartland of Mali’s Niger River Delta. Born in 1969\, Kelly first picked up the guitar at age 8 and has now become one of Mali’s music leaders. With a quiet charm and encyclopedic knowledge of Malian music\, Mamadou Kelly has been an in-demand accompanist for much of his career. He and his band mates have played alongside greats such as Ali Farka Toure and Afel Boucom\, helping to lay down the blueprint for what we now call “desert blues.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the performers\n\n\n\nIn 2013\, Mamadou Kelly made his solo debut with the well-received album “Adibar.” Backed by his crack squad of sidemen collectively known as Ban Kai Na – ”Hama” Sankare on calabash\, “Youro” Cisse on djourkel (the monochord “mandolin”)\, Ibrahim Nabo on rhythm guitar\, and Baba Traore on bass – Kelly has established his position as a bandleader in his own right. His 2015 album\, “Djamila” delivered on Adibar’s promise. It is full of subtle\, confident\, and absolutely arresting songs from one of Mali’s emerging contemporary masters. \n\n\n\nMamadou Kelly and Ban Kai Na bring a new sophistication to the sounds from Niafunke. Their music echoes the roots of American blues and bluegrass. Their last North American tour was in 2013 at Lincoln Center New York\, Chicago World Music Festival\, the Lensic Performing Arts Center Sante Fe\, and Festival Nuits d’Afrique in Montreal. SUMMARY:Creative Resistance Art Openings: North Troy Peoples’ History Museum\, Story Candles and Vacant Buildings Vanished Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Exhibitions all take place on the same block as the Sanctuary and are part of Troy Night Out. Take the free historic Troy Trolley to and from Freedom Square with stops at the Arts Center\, Collar Works\, and through the Breathing Lights installation.  \n\n\n\nBranda Ann Kenneally’s North Troy Peoples’ History Museum is presented at 3334 6th Avenue\, Troy. In a newly-reclaimed once-abandoned building\, young peoples’ stories are situated alongside a timeline of Troy’s rich history in an exploration of post-industrial culture. Kenneall’s Story Candles will be parked in front of 3334 6th Avenue and features a 16-ft cargo trailer that has been transformed into a participatory traveling installation. Story Candles is a “memory bank” honoring the lives of children from urban neighborhoods in the Capital Region whose lives ended too soon.  \n\n\n\nVacant Buildings\, Vanished Dreams is a project of the Youth Media Sanctuary in collaboration with Julie Casper Roth and Melissa Sarris. Neighborhood ambassadors will lead walking tours supplemented by an interactive map. Sponsored by the Workforce Development Institute.

SUMMARY:Brenda Kenneally’s "North Troy Peoples’ History Museum" and "Story Candles"
DESCRIPTION:North Troy Peoples’ History Museum explores the changes and evolution of families in the North Troy neighborhood. It is sited in the former home of the family Brenda Ann Kenneally chronicled for her project “Upstate Girls.” After the family was forced to leave\, the building was left vacant and fell into disrepair. It was acquired by The Sanctuary for Independent Media and repurposed into a community bio-art space. A companion exhibition\, Story Candles\, also created by Brenda Ann Kenneally\, co-produced by Kathryn Draper with additional support from Stacey Draper and others at the Rensselaer County Historical Society\, is a 16-foot cargo trailer transformed into a participatory traveling installation to honor the children from Breathing Lights’ communities whose lives have ended too soon. The “memory bank” is a collection of words\, pictures and audio reflections culled from these communities to form an open-ended collage to keep the stories of these young people alive. Many thanks to the dedicated artists and research librarians who made this installation possible.
