SUMMARY:Trio da Kali
DESCRIPTION:Trio Da Kali is a group of outstanding musicians from the Mande culture of southern Mali who come from a long line of distinguished griots (hereditary musicians). The group features Hawa Kasse Mady Diabaté\, Lassana Diabaté\, and Mamadou Koyaté. Formed of voice\, ngoni\, and balafon\, the Trio aim to bring a contemporary twist to ancient and neglected repertoires. To coincide with their British “Making Tracks” tour\, their label World Circuit released their debut EP\, which is out now on CD (available exclusively via the World Circuit shop and on tour) and download. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore about Trio da Kali\n\n\n\nHawa Kasse Mady Diabaté\, daughter of legendary Kasse Mady Diabaté\, is the singer of the Trio\, and has one of the finest griot voices in Mali. She has been compared by some to Mahalia Jackson (America’s great gospel singer). At home\, Hawa performs mainly on the wedding circuit\, singing at parties held on the streets of Bamako (the main context in which most musicians in Mali make a living).  \n\n\n\nThe most distinctive feature of the Trio is the balafon\, and Lassana Diabaté\, formerly of Afrocubism and Toumani Diabaté’s Symmetric Orchestra\, is one of Mali’s most astonishing players. Its cascading lines\, rippling and percussive riffs\, and buzzing gourd resonators\, are a familiar element in many Malian ensembles\, but here for the first time the balafon is the lead instrument.  \n\n\n\nThe youngest member of the trio is bass ngoni player Mamadou Kouyaté – the eldest son of world-renowned Bassekou Kouyaté. Still in his early 20s\, he is one of Mali’s most creative musicians of the new generation. \n\n\n\nTrio Da Kali only came into being in late 2012\, but already they have performed at a BBC Prom\, the Theatre de la Ville in Paris\, and at the London Jazz Festival. They were formed specifically to develop a project with The Kronos Quartet; David Harrington (of Kronos) describing it as ‘one of the most beautiful collaborations Kronos has had in our first 40 years’.  \n\n\n\nRecorded in Bamako\, produced by Lucy Durán (‘Toumani & Sidiki’\, ‘New Ancient Strings’\, ‘Segu Blue’) for World Circuit\, the 5 track EP is the first time this repertoire has been showcased on a release for an international market.

Bill Ayers\, author of the new book Demand the Impossible\, and fellow activist/educator Bernadine Dohr (both former members of the Weather Underground) for an engaged conversation about the world\, this historical (or hysterical) moment and where we go from here. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the presenters\n\n\n\nBill Ayers is a social justice activist\, teacher\, Distinguished Professor of Education (retired) at the University of Illinois at Chicago\, and author of two memoirs\, “Fugitive Days” and “Public Enemy.” \n\n\n\nHis new book\, “Demand the Impossible\,” is a manifesto for movement-makers. In an era defined by mass incarceration\, endless war\, economic crisis\, catastrophic environmental destruction\, and a political system offering more of the same\, radical social transformation has never been more urgent. “Demand the Impossible” urges us to imagine a world beyond what this rotten system would have us believe is possible. In critiquing the world around us\, insurgent educator and activist Bill Ayers uncovers cracks in the system\, raising our sights for radical change\, and envisioning strategies for building a movement to create a more humane\, balanced\, and peaceful world. \n\n\n\nBernardine Dohrn\, activist\, academic and children’s and women’s rights advocate\, is a retired Associate Clinical Professor at Northwestern University School of Law\, where she was the (founding) director of the Children and Family Justice Center for twenty-three years. Dohrn was national leader of SDS and the Weather Underground\, and was on the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted List. \n\n\n\nDohrn is an author and co-editor of three books: “Race Course: Against White Supremacy (2009) with Bill Ayers; “A Century of Juvenile Justice” (2002); and “Resisting Zero Tolerance: A Handbook for Parents\, Teachers and Students” (2001). Most recently she has written “In My Lifetime\, Young People Have Changed the World: Children as Social Actors” in Diving In\, and “The Surprising Role of the CRC in a Non-State Party” in Litigating the Rights of the Child. \n\n\n\nShe is co-editor of Sing A Battle Song: Documents of the Weather Underground\, and wrote the introduction to Letters from Young Activists. Dohrn taught women and children’s human rights law at Northwestern\, was a visiting professor over ten years at Leiden University faculty of law in the Netherlands and at Vrieje University in Amsterdam\, and a Lecturer at the University of Chicago.

DESCRIPTION:10^32K. The Planck temperature; the temperature at which matter ceases to exist\, and conventional physics breaks down. According to Nova\, at this point\, “strange things\, unknown things\, begin to happen to phenomena we hold near and dear\, like “space and time.” Also an apt description for what happens when you mix the cerebral flamboyance of Frank Lacy’s trombone with Andrew Drury’s kaleidoscopic percussion\, and the big broad bass sound of Kevin Ray. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe great tradition of jazz includes the reinterpretation of the works of its master composers. Because of the complexity and originality of the interpretive method\, this makes a repertory-focused ensemble far more than a “cover band.” But in the case of 10^32K.\, this approach is highly unique. \n\n\n\nRather than focusing upon the more traditional masters – Ellington\, Monk\, Miles\, etc. – this remarkable trio has\, in addition to their own compositions\, selected a compelling repertoire from some of the less-often played\, but powerfully innovative composers and players of modern Jazz. Among these are Sam Rivers\, Albert Ayler\, Roswell Rudd\, Henry Threadgill and Reggie Workman\, along with unique takes on Mingus\, Strayhorn and Jimi Hendrix. \n\n\n\nWith their debut album\, That Which is Planted\, on Oliver Lake’s Passin’ Thru label\, they showcase their interpretations of works by Mingus\, Threadgill\, Ayler\, Joe Ford and Steve McCall. \n\n\n\nThe members of 10^32K are most qualified to explore this territory\, having worked with a veritable who’s-who of the modern era. McCoy Tyner\, Andrew Hill\, Julius Hemphill\, Sam Rivers\, Henry Threadgill\, Oliver Lake\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Abdullah Ibrahim\, Bobby Watson\, John Hicks\, Lester Bowie\, Greg Osby\, Charles Gayle and the Mingus Big Band are only a partial list of the great artists with whom the members have performed extensively. 10^32K offers a delightfully singular and most enjoyable voyage in modern jazz history\, while making a good bit of their own on the way. \n\n\n\nAbout the performers\n\n\n\nAfter studies at Berklee College of Music in Boston and Rutgers University in New Jersey\, Frank Lacy (#3 2015 Downbeat critics poll\, trombone\, #2 Rising Star\, vocals) toured with greats such as Dizzy Gillespie\, Abdullah Ibrahim\, Henry Threadgill\, Julius Hemphill\, Oliver Lake\, The Eurythmics\, Carla Bley and Don Pullen. He was a member of the first Bobby Watson Horizon Band and spent a year and a half as musical director of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. \n\n\n\nFrank was an integral part of Lester Bowie’s Brass Fantasy as a singer\, arranger and trombonist\, and a member of the big bands of McCoy Tyner and David Murray. He is currently one of the longest serving members of the Mingus Big Band. He has two cds on the Enja label: Tonal Weights and Measures\, and Settegast Strut. \n\n\n\nAndrew Drury is a percussionist\, composer\, improviser\, and educator whose work is animated by a tendency toward exploration and expansion\, balanced with a love of tradition\, lyricism\, humor\, theater\, and narrative. His formative years were devoted to jazz\, centering on studies with Dave Coleman in Seattle and Ed Blackwell at Wesleyan University\, and playing experiences with artists ranging from Wadada Leo Smith and Wayne Horvitz to the Basie-era trombonist Dickie Wells and a teenage Brad Mehldau. In addition to “conventional” techniques he employs friction and air pressure in combination with a variety of gears\, clamps\, construction site detritus\, and metal objects to conjure an extreme range of frequency and texture from the drums. He has become one of very few drummers known for circular breathing and bowing a metal dust pan. \n\n\n\nDrury plays with a wide range of musicians including Jason Kao Hwang\, TOTEM\, Iron Dog\, Steve Swell\, Jack Wright\, and others. His four cds as a bandleader feature Myra Melford\, Mark Dresser\, Briggan Krauss\, and Chris Speed among others. He has performed internationally and on more than 40 recordings with Christine Abdelnour\, Michel Doneda\, Peter Evans\, Charles Gayle\, Darius Jones\, Mazen Kerbaj\, Denman Maroney\, Andrea Neumann\, Angelica Sanchez\, Jenny Scheinmann\, and Nate Wooley to name a few. \n\n\n\nWhile many young musicians were embracing the retrospection of the period\, Kevin Ray was hearing the adventurous call of The Art Ensemble of Chicago\, Henry Threadgill\, The World Saxophone Quartet\, Andrew Cyrille and other artists who held innovation higher than preservation. Supporting himself in the early 90s with a straight gig managing a division at Forbes Publishing\, Kevin continued to study and play and toward the end of the decade came into contact with one of his spiritual mentors\, Andrew Hill. \n\n\n\n“Andrew gave me the confidence to become truly serious about becoming a musician” Ray explains\, and he played regularly with the pianist\, as well as performed and recorded with other outstanding artists like John Hicks\, Oliver Lake\, Greg Osby\, John Stubblefield\, Ray Anderson\, Matt Shipp\, Hamiet Bluiett and Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre. He also performed in the premieres of major works by a wide range of composers\, including Lee Hyla\, Joe McPhee and Leroy Jenkins. \n\n\n\nUnfortunately\, what seemed to be a bout with strep throat in 2000 turned into a decade-long nightmare of mysterious maladies that defied proper diagnoses and sapped the energetic young musician of strength\, while crippling him with pain and other physical issues. Following hernia surgery in 2011\, Ray found himself on the path to complete recovery and is now at full strength and at peak powers as a player and improviser.

Many thanks to the dedicated artists and research librarians who made this installation possible. \n\n\n\nVacant Buildings\, Vanished Dreams \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn collaboration with the Workforce Development Institute\, this experimental media arts mapping project includes walking tours led by Neighborhood Ambassadors in the community immediately surrounding The Sanctuary and expresses working people’s economic\, social and personal experiences as they struggle to survive amidst urban blight. Featured videos include works by Youth Media Sanctuary\, media artist Julie Caspar Roth and artist Melissa Sarris. \n\n\n\nBreathing These Words \n\n\n\nTroy-based poets and performers\, Nancy Klepsch and Danielle Colin Charlestin\, along with other poets and writers\, will perform Breathing These Words\, a pop-up poetry project that will involve scattered poetry readings at vacant buildings connected to Breathing Lights\, as well as community-based instruction for students and seniors.

SUMMARY:Creative Resistance Art Openings: North Troy Peoples’ History Museum\, Story Candles and Vacant Buildings Vanished Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Exhibitions all take place on the same block as the Sanctuary and are part of Troy Night Out. Take the free historic Troy Trolley to and from Freedom Square with stops at the Arts Center\, Collar Works\, and through the Breathing Lights installation.  \n\n\n\nBranda Ann Kenneally’s North Troy Peoples’ History Museum is presented at 3334 6th Avenue\, Troy. In a newly-reclaimed once-abandoned building\, young peoples’ stories are situated alongside a timeline of Troy’s rich history in an exploration of post-industrial culture. Kenneall’s Story Candles will be parked in front of 3334 6th Avenue and features a 16-ft cargo trailer that has been transformed into a participatory traveling installation. Story Candles is a “memory bank” honoring the lives of children from urban neighborhoods in the Capital Region whose lives ended too soon.  \n\n\n\nVacant Buildings\, Vanished Dreams is a project of the Youth Media Sanctuary in collaboration with Julie Casper Roth and Melissa Sarris. Neighborhood ambassadors will lead walking tours supplemented by an interactive map. Sponsored by the Workforce Development Institute.

SUMMARY:Mamadou Kelly in Freedom Square
DESCRIPTION:Mamadou Kelly hails from Goundam and Niafunke\, in the heartland of Mali’s Niger River Delta. Born in 1969\, Kelly first picked up the guitar at age 8 and has now become one of Mali’s music leaders. With a quiet charm and encyclopedic knowledge of Malian music\, Mamadou Kelly has been an in-demand accompanist for much of his career. He and his band mates have played alongside greats such as Ali Farka Toure and Afel Boucom\, helping to lay down the blueprint for what we now call “desert blues.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the performers\n\n\n\nIn 2013\, Mamadou Kelly made his solo debut with the well-received album “Adibar.” Backed by his crack squad of sidemen collectively known as Ban Kai Na – ”Hama” Sankare on calabash\, “Youro” Cisse on djourkel (the monochord “mandolin”)\, Ibrahim Nabo on rhythm guitar\, and Baba Traore on bass – Kelly has established his position as a bandleader in his own right. His 2015 album\, “Djamila” delivered on Adibar’s promise. It is full of subtle\, confident\, and absolutely arresting songs from one of Mali’s emerging contemporary masters. \n\n\n\nMamadou Kelly and Ban Kai Na bring a new sophistication to the sounds from Niafunke. Their music echoes the roots of American blues and bluegrass. Their last North American tour was in 2013 at Lincoln Center New York\, Chicago World Music Festival\, the Lensic Performing Arts Center Sante Fe\, and Festival Nuits d’Afrique in Montreal. We have: fun-filled games and art activities in the garden; healthy recipes for fresh summer produce; seed exchange; tips on accessing nutritional food. Held on July 12th and 19th. \n\n\n\nThis workshop series is presented by Uptown Summer ‘16.

SUMMARY:Uptown Summer 2016
DESCRIPTION:Now in our 6th year of collaboration with Rensselaer County Summer Youth Employment\, Uptown Summer begins. Uptown Summer is a 5-week program that gives voice to North Troy’s teens. Our ten students work as Neighborhood Storytellers and Environmental Stewards. Each day\, we hold a planning meeting\, then spend the morning working greening our block in the Collard City Growers gardens. At lunch we eat healthy meals that feature our urban homegrown harvest\, and our afternoons are spent producing original media… \n\n\n\nThis summer\, youth created documentaries on abandoned buildings\, which were featured in the public art project Breathing Lights.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDocumentaries\n\n\n\n“Jerry’s House\,” by Kai Griffin\, Bryanna Mangual\, Diajah Grier\, Milan Miles\, and Andrew Pintro\, tells the story of a family forced out of a deteriorating rental “now abandoned”\, with a happy ending of owning a home.  \n\n\n\n“Safer than Yemen?” by Bryan Mangual\, Rachel Lord\, and Arianna Young\, explores violence through the lens of a corner bodega\, opened by 1920s Italian immigrants\, now transferred to Yemeni owners.  \n\n\n\n“Orange and Lex\,” by Shatora Buckman\, Jahsendah Dann\, and Ayisha Menko\, shares a razed childhood neighborhood.  \n\n\n\n“Sadie’s Grandma’s House\,” by Sadie Anson\, recounts restoring a vacant building into a loving home.  \n\n\n\n“Abandoned Building Haikus” were also created\, in collaboration with the “Breathing These Words” poetry workshop. Produced by Media Mentors Jamel Mosely\, Kathy High\, and Branda Miller. \n\n\n\nAbout our youth employees\n\n\n\nFor many of our teens\, Uptown Summer is their first workplace experience and they are confronted with adult professional expectations for the first time (arriving on time\, working effectively\, communicating clearly\, etc.). Our youth work side-by-side with community leaders\, media professionals\, renowned artists\, college professors\, urban gardeners\, nutritionists\, local volunteers\, and others. We work together to repair the environmental damage done to this block through years of neglect and industrial pollutants and to tell homegrown stories of hope and justice. We build confidence and broaden perspective. Her inspirations come from her diverse experiences and interests; often drawing from her travels\, and the raw and powerful sources that nature provides. Heard’s dynamic and eclectic lineup of musicians gives Elizabeth a multitude of talents and textures to compose for as they develop their many-colored musical tapestry. \n\n\n\nElizabeth received her formal musical training at the University of Washington and Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle\, where she studied ethnomusicology\, piano performance and composition with Brazilian pianist Jovino Santos Neto\, trombonist Julian Priester and Big Band leader/trumpet player Jim Knapp\, as well as with Nigerian Juju musician IK Dairo. She received her BA in African Studies from Brown University. Elizabeth has also been a member of the Brazilian drumming group\, The Berkshire Bateria for 10 years\, where she has studied with Sambista\, Jim Weber. \n\n\n\nIn addition to teaching composition and piano privately\, she has been an adjunct professor for 11 years in the Dance Department at Russell Sage College in Troy\, NY\, where she works as a dance musician and composer-in-residence. Her collaborations with dancers have also led her to work with the NYC-based Mark Morris\, José Limon\, and Doug Varone Companies\, and the NYC Ballet\, and with Saratoga Springs’ TangoFusion. Her work with the Capital-District based Ellen Sinopoli Modern Dance Company has led to numerous Arts-in-Education Residencies in regional elementary school.
