SUMMARY:NATURE Lab Workshop: Seed Gathering Walk and Great Leaf Forward
DESCRIPTION:Join Ellie Irons of the Next Epoch Seed Library and Azuré Keahi of Collard City Growers for an urban seed gathering hike in North Troy\, followed by an afternoon of autumnal gardening activity. During this low key urban hike we’ll identify\, bio-map and gather seeds from wild urban plants\, building a North Troy seed collection! Then punctuate the season before hibernation with a hands-on review of fall time garden chores: garlic planting\, deep mulching\, and compost evaluation.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNATURE Lab (short for North Troy Art\, Technology and Urban Research in Ecology) is a volunteer-led initiative integrating art\, science\, and technology in regular community workshops\, public art installations\, and ongoing research and collection activities in our surrounding ecosystem. Artist/scientist teams will work with the community around issues of “curing” our local ecologies\, environmental health\, public health and sustainability. \n\n\n\nNATURE Lab workshops educate community members on the environmental trials we face in our shared urban habitat\, and open up a dialogue about how we\, together\, can work towards environmental remediation.

DESCRIPTION:A rising tenor saxophonist taking the jazz world by storm\, Melissa Aldana leads a high octane quartet featuring: Michael King\, piano; Pablo Menares\, bass; Tommy Crane\, percussion. Originally from Chile\, Aldana broke into the New York jazz scene in 2009. She quickly asserted herself as one of the most esteemed tenor saxophonists of her generation. In 2013\, Aldana was recognized as the first female instrumentalist and the first South American ever to win the prestigious Thelonious Monk Competition. Since then\, she has continued to raise the bar and innovate new sounds from traditional jazz forms.  \n\n\n\nFunded through the Mid Atlantic Tour Program of the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation with support from the National Endowment for the Art.

DESCRIPTION:The Sanctuary’s Underground Gallery presents Susan B. Anthony’s “Troy Project.” This photo series compares the city of Troy’s heyday during the Industrial Revolution with its present challenges\, through intimate portraits and cityscapes. The exhibit will be on view from September 29th through December 16th\, 2017. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“My photographs depict the juxtaposition of past and present\, old and new\, decay and rebirth in this remarkable historical city. Troy was once one of the most prosperous cities in the United States thanks to its proximity to natural resources–especially the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers and the Erie Canal. The city suffered greatly when industry moved out and its economy has never really recovered. There are signs of change because of the community’s resilience\, but it is a slow\, uphill battle. The story of Troy is one of suffering and sadness\, but also of hope and growth.”   \n\n\n\nSusan B. Anthony has been an artist all her life. She was born in Brooklyn and now splits her time between Manhattan and Columbia County. Many of her photographs are set in Upstate New York.

SUMMARY:Bio-Art After Dark: A Sanctuary Sustainer Soirée
DESCRIPTION:Bio-Art After Dark: A Sanctuary Sustainer Soirée is a fundraiser that will feature music by Ryder Cooley and members of her band\, Dust Bowl Faeries\, and a scandalous insect symposium with visiting bio-artist\, Brandon Ballengée. Light refreshments (including artisanal bug pizza) included. \n\n\n\nThis project is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts. \n\n\n\nMore about the Soiree:\n\n\n\nFrom 8-9pm you will be serenaded by artist and musician Ryder Cooley & members of her band\, Dust Bowl Faeries\, playing their original blend of Dark Carnival dream music. The unique compositions of Dust Bowl Faeries have roots in klezmer\, circus and old-timey music. Accordion\, singing saw\, ukulele\, lap ­steel\, electric guitar\, bass & percussion combine to create the Dust Bowl Faeries’ otherworldly sound. The band started as a girl group trio and has now expanded to include five generations of musicians. Hazel\, a taxidermy ram\, joins the Faeries as mascot-spirit animal. \n\n\n\nSEED SONG is a seed-sharing project that pairs plants with extinct and endangered animals. The packets include hand-harvested seeds\, printed artwork\, information about the plant/animal\, planting instructions and a link/download to a song about the animal. The first packet contains Husk Cherry seeds\, which are dedicated to the extinct Dodo bird. This project is a bi-coastal collaboration between art farmer Zoey Kroll & artist/musician  Ryder Cooley. Here we will look for nocturnal bugs attracted to ultraviolet black lights such as beautiful moths\, bold beetles and other segmented critters that go bump in the night! Entomophagy is the human use of insects as food and is considered a “future diet” as insects are full of protein\, ecologically sustainable and downright tasty. Weaving together chimeric visions with songs and projected imagery\, she creates cinematic performances and musical dream worlds. Ryder performs with Hazel\, a disembodied taxidermy ram\, and with the band Dust Bowl Faeries. She is based in the New York Hudson Valley. \n\n\n\nZoey Kroll is an artist\, designer and urban farmer based in San Francisco\, CArydercooley.com \n\n\n\nBrandon Ballengée is a visual artist\, biologist and environmental educator based in Louisiana.  Ballengée creates transdisciplinary artworks inspired from his ecological field and laboratory research. Since 1996\, a central investigation focus has been the occurrence of developmental deformities and population declines among amphibians. In 2001\, he was nominated for membership into Sigma XI\, the Scientific Research Society. In 2009\, Ballengée and SK Sessions published “Explanation for Missing Limbs in Deformed Amphibians” in the Journal of Experimental Zoology and received international media attention from the BBC and others. This scientific study was the inspiration for the book Malamp: The Occurrence of Deformities in Amphibians (published by Arts Catalyst & Yorkshire Sculpture Park\, UK) and a solo exhibition at the Royal Institution of Great Britain (London\, England: 2010). From 2009 through 2015 he continued his amphibian research as a Visiting Scientist at McGill University (Montréal\, Canada) and\, in 2011\, he was awarded a conservation leadership fellowship from the National Audubon Society’s TogetherGreen Program (USA). In 2014 he received his Ph.D. in Transdisciplinary Art and Biology from Plymouth University (UK) in association with Zürich University of the Arts and Applied Sciences (Switzerland). In 2015\, he was the recipient of a fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) \n\n\n\nCurrently\, he is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Biological Sciences Department at Louisiana State University (Baton Rouge\, Louisiana)\, studying the impact on fishes from the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill. His project\, Crude Life Portable Museum: A Citizen Art and Science Investigation of Gulf of Mexico Biodiversity after the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill\, is ongoing thanks to an Interdisciplinary Projects Grant Award from the National Academies Keck Futures Initiative (NAKFI)\, a project of the National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering and Medicine. \n\n\n\nBallengée’s artwork has previously been exhibited throughout the USA and internationally in more than 20 countries\, including Canada\, Argentina\, England\, Germany\, Italy\, Spain\, Slovenia\, Russia\, India\, China\, South Korea and Australia. In the summer of 2013 the first career survey of Ballengeé’s work debuted at the Château de Chamarande (Essonne\, France)\, and travelled to the Museum Het Domein (Sittard\, Netherlands) in 2014. A mid-career retrospective of his work opened in the fall of 2016 at the University of Wyoming Art Museum (Laramie\, Wyoming)\, which will travel to the Rowan University Art Museum (Glassboro\, NJ) and the Acadiana Center for the Arts (Lafayette\, Louisiana). \n\n\n\nHis art has been featured in several major US publications\, including ARTnews\, Art in America\, The New York Times\, New Yorker\, The New York Times Magazine\, Orion\, Audubon Magazine and Sculpture. DESCRIPTION:The 7th annual Uptown Summer begins full-swing July 11th and will run through August. The Rensselaer County Summer Youth Employment Program sponsored The Sanctuary for Independent Media to hire 10 new local youth this year. Over the span of 5 weeks\, our neighborhood youth become community leaders\, environmental stewards\, media producers\, storytelling artists\, scientists\, researchers\, and local volunteers. Via all these diverse roles\, the youth and their mentors will create a multimedia documentary called Echoes from Lock One. Join us for three events: An in-progress showing of Echoes from Lock One at Troy Night out with the Rensselaer County Historical Society; End of Uptown Summer Party and Echoes from Lock One documentary showing; and Bio-Art After Dark: A Sanctuary Sustainer Soiree.

SUMMARY:Post-Industrial Ecologies of the Hudson River Estuary with Seed Bomb Art Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In his talk and workshop\, ecological artist\, writer\, and activist Oliver Kellhammer will frame post-industrial ecologies as sites of renewal and the emergence of novel processes. Together\, we will bio-map our area to begin a field guide to the biodiversity of our North Troy neighborhood brownfields. Followed by a Seed Bomb Art work party with a hands-on demo of how to make a seed bomb. Made from compressed soil and seeds\, seed bombs are designed to be thrown into areas that are degraded\, physically abused\, or in need of vegetation. We’ll release seed bombs along our bio-mapping journey!

Her first feature-length film\, the award-winning Land of Destiny (2010)\, screened internationally and was broadcast on both Canadian and American television. Her second feature documentary\, The Prison in Twelve Landscapes (2016) was awarded the Special Jury Prize for Canadian Feature Documentary at Hot Docs\, the Prize for Best Canadian Documentary at the DOXA Documentary Festival\, and a Special Jury Mention at the Camden International Film Festival. The film will be broadcast on PBS’s Independent Lens in 2017. Her journalism and film criticism have appeared in such outlets as CBC Radio and The Nation magazine\, and she is currently completing a book manuscript for the University of California Press titled The Prison out of Place. Brett holds a PhD in geography from the University of Toronto and is currently a postdoctoral research fellow at the Center for Place\, Culture and Politics at the City University of New York Graduate Center. She was the recipient of the Documentary Organization of Canada Institute’s 2014 New Visions Award and the 2016 Governor General’s Gold Medal from the University of Toronto for academic excellence. Brett is a 2016-2017 Sundance Institute Art of Nonfiction Fellow. \n\n\n\n“I have worked with prisoners and on criminal justice issues\, in Canada and the USA\, for over a decade as an activist\, journalist\, artist and academic. I have long thought about how such coercive structures have come to be so normalized within our social landscapes. SUMMARY:“Letters From Iraq” with Rahim Alhaj Trio
DESCRIPTION:The Iraqi-American oud virtuoso and composer is a two-time Grammy nominee\, National Endowment for The Arts National Heritage Fellow\, and Smithsonian Folkways Recordings artist—traveling the world to “give voice to the voiceless.” A powerful musical meditation on consequences in a post-war reality\, Oud player Rahim Alhaj\, a native of Iraq and a naturalized American citizen\, came into possession of a number of letters written by Iraqis who described such events\, experienced during the American occupation and the subsequent hideous sectarian violence.  \n\n\n\n“Basically\, these letters are short stories\, real stories\, of what happened to Iraqi women and children\,” says Alhaj.  \n\n\n\nSome of these letters came to him directly\, some were passed on to him by others\, and one story was told to him face-to-face by his nephew\, the handicapped boy who fled an attack. \n\n\n\nThe letters came to Alhaj during his 2014 visit to Iraq—his second since fleeing into Jordan as a refugee in 1991—and he was able to meet most of the letter writers. “My hope is to reach people\, because these things have been forgotten\,” he says. “This is real\, and the world has to understand. It could happen anywhere. This record is not just about Iraq. It happened in Syria\, it happened in Libya\, it happened in Yemen\, it could happen here—the same stuff. I’m hoping this record can reach more people\, to open their eyes and hearts: ‘Wait wait wait a minute—not under my name\, not again.’ ” \n\n\n\nAlhaj originally conceived of these pieces for oud and string orchestra\, but because orchestras are expensive and not always available\, he revised his concept for the trio. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPraise for AlHaj\n\n\n\n“Music is Good.
