Register and donate to find out more about how you can help us make this citizen science center a reality.Ruderal Ecologies is a weekend-long symposium to commence Earth Week. Art\, urban ecology\, and social justice activities focus on living in urban environments shaped by stress. “Ruderal ecologies” are formed by hardy and adaptive organisms and grassroots activist communities that grow out of the ruins of urban wastelands.Hosted by The Sanctuary for Independent Media’s NATURE Lab\, the symposium involves thinkers and activists from ecology\, public health\, urban planning\, environmental science\, environmental justice\, permaculture\, the arts\, and science and technology studies. DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate the first day of Spring with NATURE Lab and internationally recognized bio-artist Shu Lea Cheang! Cheang’ will present a Mycelium Network Society workshop and we’ll have a mushroom-themed community potluck.  With the help of a few generous individuals and a NYS Department of Environmental Conservation grant we’ve raised $40\,000 of the $100\,000 required to purchase and renovate a vacant building on our 6th Avenue block into an urban environmental education center — with a full science lab.  As NATURE Lab prepares to set down roots as a hub for climate action\, creative STEM-learning projects\, and bio-art\, Shu Lea will describe how supportive systems of artists and organizations is like growing a Mycelium network!

She attended the University of Miami\, where she earned a B.S. in sociology and photojournalism\, and New York University\, where she received an M.A. in studio art. Kenneally has focused on how families get lost in a culture of drugs and prison. She searches for ways to motivate inner-city women to empower themselves\, despite their limited social and economic opportunities. Kenneally’s work has been featured in the New York Times Magazine\, Rolling Stone\, and Ms. Magazine\, among other publications. In 2000\, she won the Community Awareness Award from the National Press Photographer’s Association\, and in 2001 she was awarded the International Prize for Photojournalism in Gijon\, Spain. Kenneally’s work in Brooklyn has received support from the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund\, the Mother Jones Documentary Fund\, and the Nikon Sabbatical Grant\, in addition to the Open Society Institute. Kenneally has worked with us exhibiting her photos\, teaching photojournalism workshops\, and curating several exhibitions.

SUMMARY:NATURE Lab Workshop: Currant Affair
DESCRIPTION:Learn to propagate fruiting shrubs from cuttings as we plant an edible property line of currants for community consumption at Collard City Growers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNATURE Lab (short for North Troy Art\, Technology and Urban Research in Ecology) is a volunteer-led initiative integrating art\, science\, and technology in regular community workshops\, public art installations\, and ongoing research and collection activities in our surrounding ecosystem. Artist/scientist teams will work with the community around issues of “curing” our local ecologies\, environmental health\, public health and sustainability. \n\n\n\nNATURE Lab workshops educate community members on the environmental trials we face in our shared urban habitat\, and open up a dialogue about how we\, together\, can work towards environmental remediation.

DESCRIPTION:In his documentary A Sinner in Mecca\, Parvez Sharma\, an openly gay Muslim\, travels to Mecca to reveal a never-before-seen side of Islam with his book and film. Sharma’s documentaries and written works dissect the complicated intersection of faith and sexuality. Through his work as a director and writer\, Sharma continually confronts the dissonance between his gay and Muslim identities\, enabling dialogue for an otherwise taboo topic. Sharma has also worked as an advocate and activist for the LGBT community and was featured as a keynote speaker to the United Nations at the Geneva Summit for Human Rights and Democracy. His work as an author\, activist\, and director has given a voice to communities where\, as Sharma puts it\, “the silence is strongest.”

SUMMARY:NATURE Lab Workshop: Seed Gathering Walk and Great Leaf Forward
DESCRIPTION:Join Ellie Irons of the Next Epoch Seed Library and Azuré Keahi of Collard City Growers for an urban seed gathering hike in North Troy\, followed by an afternoon of autumnal gardening activity. During this low key urban hike we’ll identify\, bio-map and gather seeds from wild urban plants\, building a North Troy seed collection! Then punctuate the season before hibernation with a hands-on review of fall time garden chores: garlic planting\, deep mulching\, and compost evaluation.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNATURE Lab (short for North Troy Art\, Technology and Urban Research in Ecology) is a volunteer-led initiative integrating art\, science\, and technology in regular community workshops\, public art installations\, and ongoing research and collection activities in our surrounding ecosystem. Artist/scientist teams will work with the community around issues of “curing” our local ecologies\, environmental health\, public health and sustainability. \n\n\n\nNATURE Lab workshops educate community members on the environmental trials we face in our shared urban habitat\, and open up a dialogue about how we\, together\, can work towards environmental remediation.

Open Hours are an opportunity to share your experience of nature in North Troy. What part of our urban ecosystem caught your eye this week? What do you love? What could you live without? NATURE Lab is partnering with a range of collaborators (from artists and scientists to farmers\, community volunteers and students) in an effort to better understand the environmental challenges we face in our shared urban habitat.
