DESCRIPTION:We are a research group based out of Cornell University’s Community and Regional Development Institute (CaRDI). Working in partnership with the Hudson River Estuary Program and the NYS Water Research Institute\, we are exploring increased flood risk and responses in New York State. The current focus of our project is on the city of Troy. We are seeking to learn how past flooding has impacted residents and how flood risk impacts people in their day-to-day lives. We are currently recruiting people to participate in focus groups on life in Troy and how it relates to the river and waterfront. The first focus group will meet in North Troy on Tuesday\, May 15 at 6pm. The second focus group will be in South Troy on Wednesday\, May 16 at 4pm.  Each group will last for approximately 2 hours. Drinks and snacks will be provided as well as a $25 gift card to thank participants for their time.

DESCRIPTION:Cornetist Taylor Ho Bynum and drummer Tomas Fujiwara incorporate all manner of inspiration into their purely musical dialogues to celebrate the roots and branches of jazz.  \n\n\n\nTomas Fujiwara is a bandleader\, composer and drummer who is a member of the trio Thumbscrew\, plays as a duo with Taylor Ho Bynum\, and is a supporting member in other groups led by Bynum\, Halvorson\, Matana Roberts\, Tomeka Reid\, Amir ElSaffar\, and Nicole Mitchell.  \n\n\n\nTaylor Ho Bynum is a bandleader and cornetist whose recent works include the 4-album set Navigation (2013) with his Sextet and 7-tette from the Firehouse 12 Records label \, and Enter the Plustet (2016)\, the debut recording of his 15-piece creative orchestra. One of his endeavors is the Acoustic Bicycle Tours where he travels to concerts solely by bike across thousands of miles.  \n\n\n\nThis installment of Free Jazz at The Sanctuary is supported by New Music USA.

SUMMARY:NATURE Lab Crowdfunding Kickoff with Bio-Artist Shu Lea Cheang
DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate the first day of Spring with NATURE Lab and internationally recognized bio-artist Shu Lea Cheang! Cheang’ will present a Mycelium Network Society workshop and we’ll have a mushroom-themed community potluck.  With the help of a few generous individuals and a NYS Department of Environmental Conservation grant we’ve raised $40\,000 of the $100\,000 required to purchase and renovate a vacant building on our 6th Avenue block into an urban environmental education center — with a full science lab.  As NATURE Lab prepares to set down roots as a hub for climate action\, creative STEM-learning projects\, and bio-art\, Shu Lea will describe how supportive systems of artists and organizations is like growing a Mycelium network!

DESCRIPTION:Join us for the sixth annual year-end festivities\, featuring free food from Unity House\, Troy Bike Rescue bike give-away\, tours of our new NATURE Lab gallery\, on-demand typewriter poetry\, music\, arts activities\, portraits by internationally recognized photographer Brenda Ann Kenneally\, and tree lighting at Freedom Square (at the corner of 101st and 5th/6th Avenue)\, and more! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCo-sponsored by North Troy Community Network\, Bella Napoli\, Unity House\, Troy Bike Rescue\, North Central Little League\, Troy Zero Waste\, TEAM Hero and Foto Care. \n\n\n\nThis project is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBrenda Ann Kenneally is a Guggenheim and Soros Criminal Justice Media Fellow. She attended the University of Miami\, where she earned a B.S. in sociology and photojournalism\, and New York University\, where she received an M.A. in studio art. Kenneally has focused on how families get lost in a culture of drugs and prison. She searches for ways to motivate inner-city women to empower themselves\, despite their limited social and economic opportunities. Kenneally’s work has been featured in the New York Times Magazine\, Rolling Stone\, and Ms. Magazine\, among other publications. In 2000\, she won the Community Awareness Award from the National Press Photographer’s Association\, and in 2001 she was awarded the International Prize for Photojournalism in Gijon\, Spain. Kenneally’s work in Brooklyn has received support from the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund\, the Mother Jones Documentary Fund\, and the Nikon Sabbatical Grant\, in addition to the Open Society Institute. Kenneally has worked with us exhibiting her photos\, teaching photojournalism workshops\, and curating several exhibitions.
