DESCRIPTION:Join us on Sunday February 17th from 11-2 for an informative interaction with our favorite friends\, the trees!! This pruning workshop officially kicks off the 2019 growing season\, woohoo!  \n\n\n\nOur food forest spans one city block and contains trees of all shapes\, sizes and functions. We will have a workshop and demonstration at freedom square and then break into groups to tackle the different areas\, and wrap up with block-wide brush gathering. The local arborists of Magai Arboriculture will be on hand and on limb to guide us in the pruning process to ensure healthy\, safe\, and productive trees. \n\n\n\nWe will attmept to cover: \n\n\n\n\nTree identification\n\n\n\nNeeds of urban trees\n\n\n\nTool selection\n\n\n\nClimbing and ladder safety\n\n\n\nMaking appropriate cuts\n\n\n\nPruning for fruit production\n\n\n\nThe art of dragging brush\n\n\n\nWhat to do with all those prunings\n\n\n\n\nPlease dress for the weather\, bring water and work gloves\, and any pruning tools you like to use.

SUMMARY:NATURE Lab Workshop With Marta De Menezes: 3-day DIY CRISPR
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a three-part DIY Workshop series on CRISP-CAS9\, a genome editing system.  Explore the possibilities modern  science offers artists\, with an internationally-renownedpioneer of biological arts. \n\n\n\nPrior to the workshop will be an introductory lecture from 5:30-6:30. de Menezes will reflect on the possibilities and strategies of identity and nature\, and how they interconnect and entangle. Then roll up your sleeves for three evenings of do-it-yourself scientific investigation with CRISPR! \n\n\n\nCRISPR refers to a range of novel gene editing systems that can be programmed to edit DNA at precise locations. It allows the permanent modification of the genes in cells of living organisms. CRISPR enables novel basic research and promises a wide range of possible applications from biomedicine and agriculture to environmental challenges. The previously unknown precision and simplicity of CRISPR and its possibilities has led to a wide diversity of reactions. While some welcome it as a gene editing revolution others urge for a worldwide moratorium\, especially when it comes to human germline modifications. Particularly controversial is the CRISPR given possibility to intervene in the evolution of organisms. \n\n\n\nWe will investigate and work with DIY CRISPR\, look into its materiality and artistic possibilities\, and discuss and explore socio-cultural\, political and ethical implications within our transdisciplinary group over the course of three days!  \n\n\n\nMore about Marta de Menezes \n\n\n\nMarta de Menezes is a Portuguese artist (b. Lisbon\, 1975) with a degree in Fine Arts by the University in Lisbon\, and a MSt in History of Art and Visual Culture by the University of Oxford. She has been exploring the interaction between Art and Biology\, working in research laboratories demonstrating that new biological technologies\, DNA\, proteins and live organisms can be used as an art medium. Her work has been presented internationally in exhibitions\, articles and lectures. She is since 2005 artistic director of Ectopia – Experimental Art Laboratory and from 2009 director of Cultivamos Cultura – Association. \n\n\n\nMarta de Menezes’ work explores the possibilities modern biology offers to artists. She has been developing the use of biology and biotechnology as new art media\, conducting her practice in research laboratories that also are her art studios. She has been trying to not only portray the recent advances of biological sciences\, but to incorporate biological material into her art as a way to convey a discourse that is not possible with any other medium: using DNA\, proteins\, cells and bodies offer an opportunity to explore novel ways of representation and communication. In the artistic research and practice that Marta de Menezes has been developing over the last 20 years\, she experiments with living and pulsing material\, changing that material to express her concepts. \n\n\n\nThrough her art works she positions herself and the audience in a range of perspectives that allow different understanding of self through other\, through nature and our alternative selves. \n\n\n\nThe works to be discussed include de Menezes’ first seminal bioart project entitled “Nature?” (1998) that questions the definition of nature through a non-genetic manipulation of live butterfly wing patterns\, and her most recent projects that use the technology of CRISPR-cas9 to reengage with questions of identity as a species\, as animals\, as composites\, and multiples – and how we understand these concepts in relation to our future. The works discussed are a series called The origin of Species: Post evolution using CRISPR-Cas9 to silence a transgenic modification of corn\, creating a new variety simultaneously natural and genetically modified\, developed in collaboration with Mexican philosopher Maria Antonia Gonzalez Valeiro (UNAM-Mexico)\, with geneticist and immunologist Luis Teixeira (IGC-Portugal)\, Truly Natural – using genome editing of GMO organisms through CRISPR-Cas9 leading to removal of transgenes\, Immortality for Two– where the author and her collaborator (her partner)\, Luís Graça\, immortalize each other immune cells\, achieved by introducing cancer-inducing genes in the cells with a viral vector\, and the most recent project\, Anti-Marta: self and non-self\, looking at antibodies between parents\, in collaboration with her partner\, immunologist Luís Graça (UNICEL Group\, Intituto de Medicina Molecular – Portugal). Kauffman’s new book\, How to Read a Protest: The Art of Organizing and Resistance\, the mobilizing coordinator of the 2003-2004 Iraq War protests explains what makes today’s grassroots resistance different from past movements in America. \n\n\n\n\nWhen millions of people took to the streets for the 2017 Women’s Marches\, there was an unmistakable air of uprising\, a sense that these marches were launching a powerful new movement to resist a dangerous presidency. But the work that protests do often can’t be seen in the moment. It feels empowering to march\, and record numbers of Americans have joined anti-Trump demonstrations\, but when and why does marching matter? After that she worked as a community garden organizer for almost two years. On the side\, she has her illustrations published in two books. When she’s not at work\, Danielle can be spotted on a bicycle\, in the mountains\, or perhaps even writing bad poetry. \n\n\n\nLuke | Engineering Technician

SUMMARY:Hope in Charm City / Collar City
DESCRIPTION:In memory of youth victims of violence\, a screening of “Charm City” with cinematographer Andre Lambertson\, followed by an informational discussion and candlelight vigil which will be held in memory of local youth victims. Please join us for an informational discussion about unreported crime and under-served youth victims for youth community conducted by various speakers. This event is part of National Crime Victims’ Week. Youth participants will receive NCVRW themed t-shirt. \n\n\n\nThis event begins with a community meal and victim resource info tables from 5:00 – 6:00\, an introduction to the screening at 6:00.  Following the film\,  a panel of Lisa Good\, Urban Grief\, Andres Lambertson\, Charm City\, and Messiah Cooper\, Justice for Dahmeek\, will discuss the issues and lead the audience in a discussion. The evening will end with a vigil for youth victims. \n\n\n\nCHARM CITY delivers a candid portrait of citizens\, police\, community advocates\, and government officials on the frontlines during three years of unparalleled\, escalating violence in Baltimore. The film highlights the positive actions undertaken by groups and individuals\, optimistically offering  humanity as common ground. \n\n\n\nOn the streets of Baltimore\, shooting is rampant\, the murder rate is approaching an all-time high and the distrust of the police is at a fever pitch. With nerves frayed and neighborhoods in distress\, dedicated community leaders\, compassionate law-enforcement officers and a progressive young city councilman try to stem the epidemic of violence. Filmed over three tumultuous years covering the lead up to\, and aftermath of\, Freddie Gray’s death in police custody\, CHARM CITY is an intimate cinema verité portrait of those surviving in\, and fighting for\, the vibrant city they call home.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a panel on science activism and advocacy in the Capital Region with public officials\, scientists\, and activists focusing on how we\, as concerned citizens\, can get involved most effectively. The event\, which replaces this year’s March for Science\, is produced by CapSci. This informal panel will be followed by a Q&A with some prepared questions. Then we will open it up to Q&A: we are open to some lively discussion. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMORE ABOUT CapSci:This CapSci event is a “Fact Finding Mission”.  Since our group has organized the March for Science\, and since there is no National March\, we were asked by the National organization to plan a “Day of Science Activism” instead.  We asked ourselves\, “what does that actually look like?  Is it letter writing\, some other form of protest? What would make a Day of Science Activism look different than an Earth Day event?  What are the best ways for individuals to have an influence and be able to speak about Science in a relevant manner?” \n\n\n\nCapSci aims to advance the public understanding of science in the New York Capital Region. Our mission is to foster interactions between scientists and nonscientists\, to promote science-based public policy and scientifically literate policy makers\, and to nurture diversity within the scientific community. We hold monthly Science lectures in area bars\, Science communication workshops using Improv techniques\, Science-themed poetry nights and theater performances\, and youth STEM outreach activities. Please join us to get involved!  PANELISTS FOR CapSci:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCara Ocobock is Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University at Albany  \n\n\n\nProfessor Ocobock’s research focuses on how humans physiologically and behaviorally acclimatize and adapt to extremes of physical activity and environment. She recently started a field site in northern Finland working with reindeer herders to better understand modern human adaptations to cold climates and the physical work of herding reindeer. She is the co-founder of CapSci—a non-profit organization that focuses on science outreach and education in the New York Capital Region. In her spare time\, she an avid powerlifter. \n\n\n\nBobbi Wilding- Deputy Director\, Clean and Healthy NY \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBobbi Wilding\, MS\, Deputy Director of Clean and Healthy NY\, has two decades of experience as an environmental health advocate. She directs the national Getting Ready for Baby coalition and CHNY’s Reducing Toxics in Child Care Program. Bobbi is an author and co-author of numerous reports and guides\, including most recently the Getting Ready for Baby campaign’s Safe Baby Products Guide. Her past writing includes Selling Safer Products\, about retailers to the child care community\, The Mattress Matters: Protecting Babies and Toddlers While They Sleep; Flame Retardants Finally Fade\, No Silver Lining\, Hazardous Chemicals in Health Care\, and numerous other reports. \n\n\n\nShe has trained hundreds of child care providers to avoid chemicals of concern\, and organized the NYS Healthy Economy and Environment conference of 2011. She is a NYS Pollution Prevention Institute Advisory Board member\, and serves on the Governance\, Outreach and Recruitment\, and Data Collection workgroups of the Interstate Chemicals Clearinghouse. She has co-led the Coming Clean coalition’s Emerging Technologies and Fenceline Action Workgroups\, and served as the coalitions’ BPA Coordinator. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKaty Dunn – District Office Congressional Aide for Paul Tonko \n\n\n\nKaty Dunn is the Field Representative for the Office of Congressman Paul D. Tonko (NY-20). Katy is responsible for staffing\, briefing\, and attending all meetings and events with Congressman Tonko when he is in the district. She is also responsible for meeting with groups\, organizations\, and individuals on the Congressman’s behalf in addition to performing constituent outreach out of the Albany District Office. She has helped plan and execute multiple district-related outreach events\, including the office’s monthly Mobile Office Hours program. She is passionate about advocacy\, public service\, and social justice. \n\n\n\nPrior to her current position\, Katy worked primarily on various state\, local\, and federal political campaigns. Katy received her B.A. in Political Science with a concentration in Public Law from the University at Albany\, SUNY. Outside of the office\, Katy enjoys spending time outside and exploring all the Capital Region has to offer. \n\n\n\nCongressman Paul Tonko represents New York’s 20th Congressional District\, including the communities of Albany\, Schenectady\, Troy\, Saratoga Springs and Amsterdam. He represents all of Albany and Schenectady Counties and parts of Montgomery\, Rensselaer and Saratoga Counties. He is serving his sixth term\, after first being sworn into Congress in 2009. \n\n\n\nPaul serves on the Energy and Commerce Committee\, the oldest standing committee in the House\, created in December of 1795. He is the first Upstate New York Democratic member to serve on the committee since Leo O’Brien\, who resigned the post in October 1966. He was elected by his peers in the 116th Congress to chair the Subcommittee on Environment and Climate Change. He was also selected to continue his service on the Science\, Space and Technology Committee\, as well as on the Natural Resources Committee. \n\n\n\nHe has previously served on the Education and Labor Committee and the Budget Committee. \n\n\n\nDr. Abby Kinchy- Associate Professor of Science and Technology\, RPI \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbby Kinchy studies how social movements\, such as the alternative agriculture movement and anti-fracking activists\, resist and shape the development of controversial technologies. Her forthcoming book\, Science by the People (Rutgers\, Sept. 2019)\, explores how citizen science—research by people who are not professional scientists—can advance goals of environmental justice and social transformation. She is also the author of Seeds\, Science\, and Struggle: The Global Politics of Transgenic Crops(MIT Press\, 2012). Kinchy completed her PhD in sociology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and is currently an associate professor in the Science and Technology Studies Department at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Emilly Obuya\, Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry\, Sage Colleges \n\n\n\nDr. Obuya is an Associate Professor of Chemistry at The Sage Colleges in Troy\, NY. She graduated with a BSc. in Chemistry from Kenyatta University (Kenya) and obtained her PhD in Inorganic Chemistry from The State University of New York in Binghamton. Emilly has worked on nanotechnological solutions for environmental remediation that includes removal or organic dyes from water systems. Her current research interest are to develop solar disinfection (SODIS) as a reliable water treatment technology for residents of Obunga slums in Kisumu\, Kenya. Emilly is passionate about citizen science and has speared-headed a number of initiatives geared towards the youth in Troy\, including the “GO GREEN” summer institute at the Troy Boys and Girls Club and The Troy YMCA Teen Mentor program.  Meghan Marohn- Green Sanctuary Committee of the Albany Unitarians and Extinction Rebellion \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMeghan Marohn is an artist\, environmentalist\, and educator. She’s the founder of a community art project\, the Troy Poem Project\, and has been a high school English teacher and an adjunct professor of education at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Recently\, she’s been working with the students of the ALP School 12 in Troy\, Troy Prep\, Lansingburgh Middle School and Shaker High to create youth segments for WOOC. Her favorite moments of teaching\, radio\, and the poem project have been those in which people young and old share the vulnerable parts of themselves and are received in kindness\, joy\, and connection. She’s now working to build shared storytelling communities as a board member and education consultant for A Little Creative Class\, Inc.\, a nonprofit that seeks to strengthen youth in the most economically and socially vulnerable parts of New York State. \n\n\n\nTrained as a Climate Reality Leader in Denver in March of 2017\, Meghan has also presented on the climate crisis at various religious and academic institutions in New York and New Jersey. Through the Climate Reality Project and Uptown Summer at The Sanctuary for Independent Media\, she has worked with young people to develop their creative expression of environmental changes in the Anthropocene. She heads the Green Sanctuary Committee of the First Unitarian Universalist Society of Albany\, and since this past winter\, she has joined up with activists worldwide to support the mission of Extinction Rebellion\, a movement of nonviolent direct action addressing the imminence of anthropogenic climate change. \n\n\n\nHer personal work includes poetry and stories focused on the internal lives of everyday people\, particularly women\, as they navigate power structures in late capitalism and search for portals to spiritual freedom.

DESCRIPTION:Prepare garden beds that have been resting all winter\, readying for this year’s plantings. Learn to turn one plant into many by the simple practice of root division! \n\n\n\nCollard City Growers is a volunteer-run food justice project where we connect arts and culture to growing a wealth of annuals and perennials including vegetables\, medicinal herbs\, natural dye plants\, grains\, and fruit trees. We share our homegrown harvest at neighborhood events that host hundreds of community members and passersby who come in search of nutrient dense food or “the best lettuce [they’ve] ever tasted.” During off-season\, we share our harvest in the form of preserved greens\, sauerkraut\, pickles\, and hot sauce. \n\n\n\nNATURE Lab [North Troy Art Technology and Urban Research in Ecology] is the Sanctuary’s resident ecological education program. NATURE Lab promotes sustainability\, and urban research in ecology using art\, technology and science. Programming is open to novices and experts alike. We are currently in development of the NATURE Lab Urban Environmental Center\, a resource for community science.

DESCRIPTION:Join Ellen Rocco\, manager of North Country Public Radio\, to learn the secrets of recording a great interview\, from research to writing questions to post-production. She will also share her experiences and insights on First Amendment and journalism best practices. \n\n\n\nBorn and raised and schooled in Manhattan\, Ellen Rocco moved to the North Country farm she still lives on in 1971. She has been at the station since 1980; station manager since 1985. Ellen served six years on the NPR Board (tenure ended about 18 months ago)\, and has been a panelist for CPB\, the NYS Council on the Arts\, and other media and cultural organizations. She’s at NCPR because it’s great to do good work…in this place. She has never had ambitions to climb the ladder to bigger\, better known stations. She works there because she lives there\, and is part of that community. \n\n\n\nBe the Media! workshops teach multimedia skills to community members to develop urgently needed independent local voices. DESCRIPTION:Mike Burke is a long time producer with the international daily news program Democracy Now!\, with years of experience in all aspects of news production.  \n\n\n\nJoin Mike as he shares tips and tricks\, processes and strategies\, playing DN! excerpts to dissect and discuss. Mike will share techniques for shaping a show to keep audiences engaged. He will review his process scouring the news and condensing texts to write headlines. Finally\, Mike will conduct a hands-on lab\, focusing on a Hudson Mohawk Magazine local story to share research strategies for investigative journalism. \n\n\n\n\nBurke is a former staff reporter at the Springfield Union News and Greenfield Recorder in Massachusetts where he also helped start and run the Flywheel Community Arts Space\, a DIY music and artist space. As a freelance reporter his work has appeared in Punk Planet\, Clamor\, the Ashville Global Report and Left Turn. In addition to his work on Democracy Now!\, he helped found\, “The Indypendent”\, a monthly social and economic justice newspaper based in New York.  \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nBe the Media! workshops teach multimedia skills to community members to develop urgently needed independent local voices.
