DESCRIPTION:Join us on Sunday February 17th from 11-2 for an informative interaction with our favorite friends\, the trees!! This pruning workshop officially kicks off the 2019 growing season\, woohoo!  \n\n\n\nOur food forest spans one city block and contains trees of all shapes\, sizes and functions. We will have a workshop and demonstration at freedom square and then break into groups to tackle the different areas\, and wrap up with block-wide brush gathering. The local arborists of Magai Arboriculture will be on hand and on limb to guide us in the pruning process to ensure healthy\, safe\, and productive trees. \n\n\n\nWe will attmept to cover: \n\n\n\n\nTree identification\n\n\n\nNeeds of urban trees\n\n\n\nTool selection\n\n\n\nClimbing and ladder safety\n\n\n\nMaking appropriate cuts\n\n\n\nPruning for fruit production\n\n\n\nThe art of dragging brush\n\n\n\nWhat to do with all those prunings\n\n\n\n\nPlease dress for the weather\, bring water and work gloves\, and any pruning tools you like to use.

DESCRIPTION:Experience the magic of sticks to propagate fruiting shrubs: grow our food forest with elderberries\, blackberries\, raspberries\, grapes and cuttings you bring to experiment with! \n\n\n\nAfterward\, join us inside the Sanctuary for the Holiday Celebration! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCollard City Growers is a volunteer-run food justice project where we connect arts and culture to growing a wealth of annuals and perennials including vegetables\, medicinal herbs\, natural dye plants\, grains\, and fruit trees. We share our homegrown harvest at neighborhood events that host hundreds of community members and passersby who come in search of nutrient dense food or “the best lettuce [they’ve] ever tasted.” During off-season\, we share our harvest in the form of preserved greens\, sauerkraut\, pickles\, and hot sauce.

Kenneally has focused on how families get lost in a culture of drugs and prison. She searches for ways to motivate inner-city women to empower themselves\, despite their limited social and economic opportunities. Kenneally’s work has been featured in the New York Times Magazine\, Rolling Stone\, and Ms. Magazine\, among other publications. In 2000\, she won the Community Awareness Award from the National Press Photographer’s Association\, and in 2001 she was awarded the International Prize for Photojournalism in Gijon\, Spain. Kenneally’s work in Brooklyn has received support from the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund\, the Mother Jones Documentary Fund\, and the Nikon Sabbatical Grant\, in addition to the Open Society Institute. DESCRIPTION:A multimedia performance of “Peace Be With You: Letters from Rap” with the Music Now! Unit. Theodore Burnett III performs music based on letters written by his father during deployment in Vietnam from 1968-1970.  Funded in part by New Music USA. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe Music Now! Unit:Larry Roland–bass and narrationCharley Sabatino–bass Matt Lavelle–trumpet and bass clarinet.Leonid Galaganov–drumsDave Ross–guitarRas Moshe–tenor sax\, flute and narration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRas Moshe Burnett is a native of Brooklyn NY\, born on the 22nd of March 1968 into a family of musicians. He performs on the tenor sax\, soprano sax and flute in the metropolitan area as well as performing as a ten year member of Bill Cole’s Untempered Ensemble. \n\n\n\nHis paternal grandfather Theodore Burnett I (“Teddy Barnett” professionally) performed on alto and tenor saxophones in the bands of Chick Webb\, Lucky Millinder\, Earl Bostic\, Jimmy Mundy\, Henri Woode\, Don Redman\, Benny Carter and Sister Rosetta Tharpe among others after his arrival from Jamaica in 1929. He can be viewed in early film footage performing with some of the orchestras listed. He wrote music for New Canaan Baptist Church in Brooklyn from the early 70’s to the early 90’s \n\n\n\nHis father (Theodore Jacob Burnett II) played alto sax\, and bass clarinet in the Brooklyn area throughout the 70’s and 80’s. He resumed musical activity from 2000 until his passing in 2014.  Ras started music studies in the public schools from 5th grade throughout high school. He played with african drum groups and reggae bands from 1987 to the early 90’s before starting his own ensembles. He is a recent graduate with a B.A in music studies and preparing for a master’s program. He is a recently published poet\, his poems being featured in The Metropolitan Review. \n\n\n\nHe is the founder of the “Music Now!” series in 1999\, a monthly presentation of jazz and new music initially at The Brecht Forum and currently extant at The Brooklyn Commons since 2011. \n\n\n\nRas believes in the power of creative music’s effect on social and personal change. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRas has brought and continues to bring his music to many venues including: The Knitting Factory\, The Sanctuary For Independent Media\, Roulette\, The Brecht Forum\, Issue Project Room\, Syracuse Film Festival\, Outpost 186 (Cambridge MA)\, University of Charlottesville\, Syracuse University\, Rhizome\, The Brooklyn Commons\, WBAI-FM\, WKCR-FM.

SUMMARY:NATURE Lab Workshop with Nathalie Dubois Calero: Tabletop Composting
DESCRIPTION:Life is a cycle\, let’s experience it by eating over decomposing food! Learn what can be composted and how to compost it. We will show you how to use bokashi and worms to compost indoors. \n\n\n\nMentor: Nathalie Dubois Calero \n\n\n\nOne foot in art\, one foot in science (I have a PhD in plant science)\, the head in stars\, I try to keep an uncertain balance. I worked with microalgae\, installed as a mobile or on a split object\, with airborne microorganisms -growing over a 10-foot specific fabric\, floating\, –  or with micro propagated cultures of genetically modified plants\, plastic\, found phones etc\, to create a man-made man. My works are a reflection about the world we construct around us to “protect” us\, the man-made nature we try to impose to the other organisms\, and to ourselves\, our fears of any organisms – specially the smallest and invisible ones- we cannot dominate or control\, but that are intimately in us. \n\n\n\nBorn in France and living in Montreal\, Canada\, I am affiliated to Milieux\, the Institute for Arts Culture and Technology at Concordia University\, in the Lab Cluster. After 21 years in prison and more than a decade on death row\, he was finally exonerated. Check out the New Yorker story\, “How Chicago’s Public Schools Are Teaching the History of Police Torture\,” by Thai Jones\, September 27\, 2018. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRONALD KITCHEN BIO \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRonald Kitchen was walking to buy cookies for his young son on a summer evening in 1988 when Chicago detectives picked him up for questioning. As the officers’ car headed toward the precinct\, the twenty-two-year-old called out the window to his family\, “I’ll be back in forty-five minutes.” It took him twenty-one years to make it home. \n\n\n\nKitchen was beaten and tortured by Chicago’s notorious police commander Jon Burge\, and his cronies\, until finally confessing to a gruesome quintuple homicide he did not commit. Convicted of murder and sentenced to die\, he spent the next two decades in prison—including a dozen years on death row—before at last winning his release and exoneration. Ronald Kitchen’s ordeal was not his alone. He was only one of scores of victims of Jon Burge and his notorious Midnight Crew\, a group of rogue Chicago police detectives who spent decades terrorizing\, brutalizing\, and incarcerating men—more than 120 have come forward so far—in Chicago’s African American communities. \n\n\n\nDuring his years in jail\, Kitchen co-founded the Death Row 10 from his maximum security cellblock. Together\, these men fought to expose the grave injustices that led to their wrongful convictions. The Death Row 10 appeared on 60 Minutes\, Nightline\, Oprah\, and Geraldo Rivera and\, with the help of lawyers and activists\, were instrumental in turning the tide against the death penalty in Illinois. Kitchen was finally exonerated in 2009 and won a high-profile lawsuit against the city of Chicago. My Midnight Years is the first book to be published about the Jon Burge scandal. \n\n\n\nTHAI JONES BIOThai Jones is a lecturer in history at Columbia University\, whose work examines radical social movements and political organizing. He is the author of two previous books his writings have appeared in a variety of national publications\, ranging from the New Yorker and the New York Times to The Nation and the Occupied Wall Street Journal.  \n\n\n\nALICE GREEN BIO \n\n\n\nDr. Alice Green is the Executive Director of the Center for Law and Justice\, a civil rights organization she founded in 1985. She has a doctorate in criminal justice and advanced degrees in education\, social work\, and criminology. \n\n\n\nIn 1985\, Governor Mario Cuomo appointed Dr. Green to membership on the Citizens Policy and Complaint Review Council of the New York State Commission of Corrections. A year later\, with Senate approval\, he appointed her to the position of Deputy Commissioner of the New York State Division of Probation and Correctional Alternatives. She was put in charge of strategic planning\, policy\, and information. After leaving state service\, she became Legislative Director for the New York Civil Liberties Union where she had served as Director of their Albany Office in 1982. \n\n\n\nAlice Green\, an adjunct professor at the University at Albany\, has also taught at Russell Sage and Siena College. She began her career as a secondary school teacher and social worker. For many years\, she directed Trinity Institution\, a youth and family services center in Albany’s South End.While there\, she also did community organizing and founded the South End Scene\, one of the longest published Black newspapers in Albany.

SUMMARY:NATURE Lab Workshop with Heather Dewey-Hagborg: Who Do You Think You Are- DNA Ancestry and Biosurveillance
DESCRIPTION:How much can you learn about a stranger from a stray cigarette butt? Our DNA can reveal stories about us—including our ancestry\, disease risks\, physical characteristics\, and predispositions. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThese stories pass from parent to child hidden within our cells. Today\, millions of people have explored their DNA to uncover these stories using direct-to-consumer sequencing services. In the process\, new questions about ancestry and the predictive power of the genome have arisen.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nWhat does (and doesn’t) your DNA reveal? How are emerging genetic technologies reinforcing age old stereotypes and what can we do to subvert them? \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nIn this workshop we will take a tour of DIY biotech including DNA extraction\, phenotyping\, and concoction of our own genetic obfuscation spray. We will explore the present and future of biological surveillance and discuss what you can do to resist it. Funded by NEA BioArt Futures… \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHeather Dewey-Hagborg is a transdisciplinary artist and educator who is interested in art as research and critical practice. Her controversial biopolitical art practice includes the project Stranger Visions in which she created portrait sculptures from analyses of genetic material (hair\, cigarette butts\, chewed up gum) collected in public places. Heather has shown work internationally at events and venues including the World Economic Forum\, the Shenzhen Urbanism and Architecture Biennale\, the Van Abbemuseum\, Transmediale and PS1 MOMA. Her work is held in public collections of the Centre Pompidou\, the Victoria and Albert Museum\, and the New York Historical Society\, and has been widely discussed in the media\, from the New York Times and the BBC to Art Forum and Wired. Heather has a PhD in Electronic Arts from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She is an artist fellow at AI Now\, and an affiliate of Data & Society. DESCRIPTION:Trumpeter Chris Pasin performs music inspired by free jazz icons in a CD release party with Harvey Sorgen\, Michael Bisio\, Adam Siegel\, and Creative Music Studio founders Karl Berger and Ingrid Sertso. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nFor his fourth CD as leader\, jazz trumpeter Chris Pasin leads his vibrant band Ornettiquette in saluting NEA Jazz Master and Pulitzer Prize winner Ornette Coleman and his long-time collaborator Don Cherry. \n\n\n\n“Imagine standing on a beach with the tide tugging the sand away under your feet while still feeling grounded in sea and sand and ski—absolutely thrilling.”–Michael Hochanadel\, Jukebox\, The Daily Gazette \n\n\n\nWith his accessible and entertaining new album\, “Ornettiquette\,” trumpeter Chris Pasin and his adventurous band of inspired musicians take a joyous look at the music of saxophonist/composer/innovator Ornette Coleman and his long-time sonic partner trumpeter Don Cherry.  This is the fourth release as a leader for New York-native Pasin\, a longtime practitioner of jazz from straight-ahead to avant-garde.  \n\n\n\n“I became acquainted with the music of Ornette Coleman\, Don Cherry\, and Albert Ayler as a teenager\, and played along with their records\,” Pasin recalls. “A little later I transcribed ‘Ghosts\,’ and started playing it with people\, but it was not until recently that the idea of a band playing the music inspired by these heroes occurred to me\, thus engendering ‘Ornettiquette.’” \n\n\n\nHighlights among Ornettiquette’s eight compositions include: \n\n\n\n“Ghosts” salutes its composer\, Albert Ayler\, with steady confidence\, from the ethereal vocal/vibes/drums opening\, through compelling trumpet/sax interplay\, to a tender ending. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA chill-inducing rendition of “Lonely Woman\,” among Coleman’s most renowned compositions\, featuring an ominous bowed bass undercurrent\, introspective vocal\, and gripping trumpet solo. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrnettiquette’s upbeat and jaunty take on the lilting melody of “Tomorrow Is the Question.” Check out the fine saxophone solo and propulsive drumming. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChris Pasin\, a long-time resident of New York’s upper Hudson Valley\, earned a dual degree in classical and jazz trumpet performance at the New England Conservatory.  He has proved his bona fides in both forums\, playing with the likes of Gunther Schuller\, Toshiko Akiyoshi\, George Russell\, Jimmy Giuffre\, Jaki Byard\, Buddy Rich and a host of others.  Chris has an affinity for collaborating with singers\, working with legends including Frank Sinatra\, Mel Torme\, Nancy Wilson\, Sarah Vaughan and Tony Bennett. \n\n\n\nThis album marks the second collaboration between Pasin and producer Patricia Dalton Fennell on Planet Arts records. The first—2017’s successful holiday album “Baby It’s Cold Outside”—earned critical acclaim as well as a meteoric rise to the top 50 on the charts. \n\n\n\nWhen Pasin sought musicians to accompany him on his adventures into Ornette Coleman/Don Cherry territory\, he didn’t have to look far.  Fellow Hudson Valley dwellers Karl Berger (piano/vibes) and Ingrid Sertso (vocals) had both played with Coleman and Cherry. With encouragement from the two icons\, Berger and Sertso cofounded the Creative Music Studio in Woodstock in the early 1970s.  The pair have played and collaborated with innovators including Don Ellis\, Carla Bley\, Sam Rivers\, Pharoah Sanders\, Dave Holland\, Eric Dolphy\, Steve Lacy\, Ed Blackwell\, Bob Moses\, Pauline Oliveros\, Nana Vasconcelos\, Olatunji\, and others. \n\n\n\nAlso joining Pasin on Ornettiquette are: \n\n\n\nAlto saxophonist Adam Siegel\, who has fronted his own bands over the past decade as well as become an in-demand sideman. Recognized for his intense and original approach\, the graduate of Philadelphia’s University of the Arts has played with everyone from Dick Oatts to Pete Seeger. \n\n\n\nBassist Michael Bisio has appeared on dozens of albums as leader\, coleader or sideman with the likes of Matthew Shipp\, Charles Gayle\, Connie Crothers\, Whit Dickey\, Ivo Perelman\, Barbara Donald\, Newman Taylor Baker\, Sonny Simmons and Sabir Mateen.  The winner of multiple awards and grants\, Bisio is also a widely respected composer and educator. \n\n\n\nDrummer Harvey Sorgen has conducted workshops internationally and performed with Ahmad Jamal\, Dave Douglas\, Zakir Hussain\, Wadada Leo Smith\, Roswell Rudd\, Levon Helm\, Bill Frisell\, Carlos Santana\, Greg Allman\, Jack DeJohnette\, and more. \n\n\n\nWith its invigorating and heartfelt sound\, Ornettiquette is certain to delight jazz fans in the know\, as well as be a great introduction to the music for the so-far uninitiated. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBelow are more videos from the event\, featuring several songs from the group.

We will test for tiny life using felt and edible media\, and even grow airborne bacteria on underwear! \n\n\n\nAges 12+ \n\n\n\nMentor: Natalie Dubois Calero \n\n\n\nOne foot in art\, one foot in science (I have a PhD in plant science)\, the head in stars\, I try to keep an uncertain balance. I worked with microalgae\, installed as a mobile or on a split object\, with airborne microorganisms -growing over a 10-foot specific fabric\, floating\, –  or with micro propagated cultures of genetically modified plants\, plastic\, found phones etc\, to create a man-made man. My works are a reflection about the world we construct around us to “protect” us\, the man-made nature we try to impose to the other organisms\, and to ourselves\, our fears of any organisms – specially the smallest and invisible ones- we cannot dominate or control\, but that are intimately in us. \n\n\n\nBorn in France and living in Montreal\, Canada\, I am affiliated to Milieux\, the Institute for Arts Culture and Technology at Concordia University\, in the Lab Cluster.
