The Infiltrators\, director by Alex Rivera and Christina Ibarras\, is a film about a rag-tag group of undocumented youth—Dreamers—who deliberately get arrested by Border Patrol to infiltrate a shadowy detention center. Nearly a decade ago\, filmmaker Alex Rivera first encountered the DREAMER activist group the National Immigrant Youth Alliance. Captivated by their grit and determination\, he began filming The Infiltrators. The NIYA\, Obama-era youth led movement\, focused on stopping deportations. As their vision and creativity grew\, their civil disobedience actions also escalated and became more daring. Rivera’s vision also grew from imagining a short documentary to seeing the potential for a longer film when the activists decided to get detained to stop deportation from within.  \n\n\n\nPreceded by a Be The Media! workshop and a community meal and resource exchange. \n\n\n\nCo-sponsored by iEAR Presents! the School of Humanities\, Arts and Social Sciences at Rensselaer\, made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Rivera’s vision also grew from imagining a short documentary to seeing the potential for a longer film when the activists decided to get detained to stop deportation from within. \n\n\n\nWith the initial intent of helping Argentinian Claudio Rojas\, the undocumented youth infiltrated the Broward Detention Center in Florida by sending Marco Saavedra inside to gather intelligence\, spread information to other detainees and to coordinate a plan to free them. Later Viridiana Martinez joined him infiltrating the female side of the detention center. \n\n\n\n“The Infiltrators” documents the work of the activist DREAMERS as they navigate inside the detention center\, outsmarting the agents and organizing to free detainees. “The Infiltrators shows we are not powerless. We can fight back and be effective\,” said Martinez. We’re taking our agency back\, she continues. “We need allies and we need people to have our back and to be standing beside us but to not speak for us.” \n\n\n\nUnable to shoot inside the actual detention center\, directors Rivera and Cristina Ibarra\, opted for mixing genres and experimenting with adding scripted material. “The story needed an innovative approach because it’s about people who go into a place where you can’t film\,” said Rivera. \n\n\n\nUsing memory workshops with Saavedra\, Martinez and Rojas\, as well as the Freedom of Information Act\, Rivera and Ibarra worked meticulously to recreate the sounds\, colors and textures of the detention center. They also worked hard to hire actors who physically resembled their counterparts and could embody their essence. \n\n\n\nThe film is a testimony to the steadfast commitment of the DREAMERS\, the detainees they served and to the power of the Latinx community’s vision and heroism. “We’re here to push back and to tell a story in which immigrants are hacking the system and are smarter than their opponents\,” explains Rivera. “Immigrants not as victims\, but as leaders\, as visionaries.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore About the Co-Sponsors:\n\n\n\nCapital District Border Watch: The scope of this committee will be to monitor the situation at the border and respond with direct action to human rights\, humanitarian crises\, and militarization at the border. We also see ourselves creating educational events and sharing information from Amnesty International\, ACLU\, local organizations working at the border\, and other partners involved in immigration and human rights. We might also partner with a local organization at the border to facilitate local material aid and volunteer partnerships. We consider ourselves a subcommittee of ICE-free Capital District and we seek to support and coordinate with other local immigration\, refugee organizations. \n\n\n\nICE-FREE Capital District is a newly-formed organization committed to protecting families and defending immigrants in the Capital District of New York State.We are composed of residents of all backgrounds who want to see the presence of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement removed from our towns and cities. We advocate for the complete end to collaboration with ICE from police and municipal agencies. All residents\, regardless of status\, should feel free and comfortable utilizing public services\, and should not fear raids or threats of detention and deportation in their homes\, their workplaces\, or their communities. We work to advance Sanctuary legislation at city and county levels. We work to accompany and defend immigrants who are facing deportation. We work to advance state legislation that would protect and strengthen immigrant rights. \n\n\n\nThe Saratoga Immigration Coalition\, a network of civic groups\, faith communities and concerned individuals\, seeks to foster\, through support\, education and advocacy\, a community that is welcoming to all immigrants without regard to legal status. \n\n\n\nExtinction Rebellion Capital Region: We are facing an unprecedented global emergency. DESCRIPTION:Explore strategies that blur the lines between documentary and fiction\, from script writing to media activism to studio production to post-production. Alex Rivera is an award-winning filmmaker whose work explores issues that impact the Latino community\, particularly on subjects of labor\, immigration\, and gender. He is best known for his science fiction film\, Sleep Dealer (2008)\, which screened at the Sundance Film Festival\, and has made a number of mockumentaries particularly focusing on the transnational struggles of immigrants. Preceding the workshop at 6pm is a Community Meal and Resource Exchange: connect and broaden the network of resistance\, with community organizers from Capital District Border Watch\, ICE-Free Capital District\, Troy Sanctuary\, Saratoga Immigration Coalition (SIC)\, and Extinction Rebellion Capital Region. DESCRIPTION:Come learn about where our waste comes from\, the issues associated with it\, and how to reduce it! We will talk about refusing\, reducing\, reusing\, recycling\, and composting. Techniques will span from cheap or even money saving to expensive\, easy and sometimes easier to hard\, and from no to large effects on your health. There will be an apartment-style worm composting bin present to see as well.  \n\n\n\nKayla Coldsnow is a 5th year biology Ph.D. student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Her research investigates the many ways humans are impacting our vital freshwater ecosystems\, including a variety of contaminants and invasive species. In addition to her research\, Kayla also loves to complete STEAM outreach with a variety of organizations including NATURE Lab. At NATURE Lab\, she has held workshops that focus on freshwater ecosystems\, careers involving STEAM\, composting\, and our waste.

Bring your friends\, family and community members to celebrate the hard work of our Community Scientists and our shared commitment to clean water. \n\n\n\nThis event is FREE and open to all and we will provide some “stone soup” as well! \n\n\n\n\nRiverkeeper was established in 1966 and was first known as the Hudson River Fishermen’s Association when local fishers formed the group to reverse the effects of pollution by factories on the river. They have three missions: “guarding your waterways\, defending clean drinking water\, and finding solutions.” While there have been significant strides to clean the river\, much work is still needed and budget cuts in government funding and climate change are causing these missions to get harder. “Riverkeeper’s vision is of a Hudson teeming with life\, with engaged communities boating\, fishing and swimming throughout its watershed.” They are well on their way. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTo learn more about Riverkeeper and this event\, listen to this interview done with the organizers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCo-sponsored by Riverkeeper.

DESCRIPTION:Learn tips and tricks for editing with appropriated footage from this award-winning nonfiction filmmaker! Penny Lane is an award-winning nonfiction filmmaker who was named one of Filmmaker Magazine‘s “25 New Faces of Independent Film” and a Chicken & Egg Breakthrough Award winner. Her most recent feature-length documentary HAIL SATAN? recently debuted at Sundance and released by Magnolia Pictures in 2019.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPenny has been awarded grants from the Sundance Institute\, Catapult Film Fund\, Creative Capital\, Cinereach\, TFI Documentary Fund\, Jerome Foundation\, LEF Foundation\, NYSCA\, Experimental Television Center\, IFP and Puffin Foundation. She was named “Most Badass!” at the Iowa City Documentary Film Festival in 2009. She received her MFA in Integrated Electronic Arts at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and her BA in American Culture and Media Studies at Vassar College. She has taught film\, video and new media art at Colgate University\, Bard College\, Hampshire College and Williams College. SUMMARY:NATURE Lab: Health Autonomy Clinic - Session 1
DESCRIPTION:Health Autonomy Clinic with Dr. Francis Coughlin and JJ Luceno. As part of the Sanctuary for Independent Media’s growing NATURE Lab\, JJ Luceno and Dr. Frank Coughlin are working to establish a central space in Troy to share health skills\, provide basic integrative care and explore ways to build networks of community health. Though caring for our elders\, our children\, or cooking soul-nourishing food for family or friends may not be deemed ‘real’ healthcare\, they know that in fact\, it’s what holds us together and keeps us sane. Let’s bring our skills together to build a space where creative\, joyful health is possible and accessible. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn Tuesday\, November 12th we will be hosting the first in a series of “Health Autonomy Clinics.”  At the core of the clinics will be tangible services and a place to connect. The clinic will include basic first aid materials\, blood pressure and blood sugar screenings. We hope to offer childcare during the hours. We are looking for practitioners that would like to offer skills or interactive demos during the clinics\, as a first step to building a health network in the region. \n\n\n\nThere will be an Open House from 4-5pm and a Community Conversation from 5-6:30pm. From 6:30-8:00\, we’ll roll up our sleeves and develop strategies for our next session.  \n\n\n\nMore about our session leaders: \n\n\n\n\nDr. Frank Coughlin is originally from the Hudson Valley\, but is now living in New Lebanon. He works as an ER physician at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield and Samaritan Hospital in Troy. He helps run the “Health Autonomy at the End of Empire” podcast and is a member of the Lebanon Health Assembly. Coughlin is excited to build on the generations of strong communities in the Capital Region and to foster health autonomy as a liberatory practice. \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nJJ Luceno is usually found tight-roping between the plant world and the story universe. She has worked as an educator in many settings: in the woods and urban gardens with children\, in shelters with survivors of domestic violence and facilitating health\, and in sex and puberty education with families. She believes in the undeniable need for liberation medicine and hopes that storytelling and skillsharing can help us reimagine the ways we can care for ourselves and each other. Luceno grew up in the Hudson Valley and now lives in New Lebanon\, NY.

SUMMARY:NATURE Lab Chimera Workshop with Boryana Rossa and Heidi Hehnly
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to participate in a workshop co-led by artist Boryana Rossa and biologist Heidi Hehnly.  Through the lens of an artist scientist collaboration\, this experimental hands on workshop will stimulate conversations from the biological to the ethical — including discussion of genetic predisposition of behavior and policing\, as well as scientific and media representations of the state of genetic research. \n\n\n\nRossa will also present her “Mirror of Faith” bio-art project\, meant to provoke critical public dialogue about genetic research\, exposing some issues this technology and its political and commercial promotion creates. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA message from Boryana and Heidi: \n\n\n\nDuring this workshop\, create your chimera. In this workshop you will collage and create your own imaginary bestiary creature based on genetics as both dream and science.  Speculate on its aesthetic\, metaphorical\, fantastical or utilitarian properties\, its ethical ramifications\, and us. \n\n\n\nBring two or more objects (stuffed and plastic toys\, plants\, but not living animals) that represent these species from which you will create your chimera. For instance an elephant stuffed toy and a lavender plant. During the workshop you will make a collaged chimerical object and write a paragraph description of the use of this chimera or its aesthetics. Any approach is good – playful\, anecdotal or serious. At the end we will make a book with images of the chimeras and their descriptions\, which will resemble an ancient bestiary. During your work we will engage you in complex conversations about genetic modification. \n\n\n\nThis program is FREE and open to all! \n\n\n\nBoryana Rossa is an interdisciplinary artist and curator who works in the fields of electronic arts\, film\, video\, performance and photography. In 2004 together with the Russian artist and film maker Oleg Mavromatti\, Rossa established UTRAFUTURO–an international group of artists engaged with issues of technology\, science and their social implications. Her works have been shown internationally at museums such as the Brooklyn Museum\, NY; Garage Museum of Contemporary Art\, Moscow; Museum of Modern Art MUMOK\, Vienna\, Austria etc. Currently\, Boryana is an Associate Professor in the Transmedia department at Syracuse University. Boryana earned a doctorate degree from the Department of the Arts\, at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 2012. More information can be found on her website. \n\n\n\nProfessor Heidi Hehnly is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology\, at Syracuse University. She holds doctorate degrees from the the University of Iowa\, Iowa City IA (2003-2009) and did her postdoc at University of Massachusetts Medical School\, Worcester Mass (2010-14). Her research interests include understanding the interface between cytoskeletal dynamics and membrane transport and defining how they co-regulate one another to control essential cellular processes such as cell division\, fate\, and polarity. SUMMARY:RAM Haiti
DESCRIPTION:Haiti’s preeminent band\, RAM\, straight from the famed Hotel Olo son in Port-au-Prince! Founded by band leader\, Richard A. Morse\, with over 25 years of consistently producing quality music\, they released their 7th album\, August 1791\, their second album in just three years. Ancient Folkloric drums intertwine harmoniously with punk rock guitars and swinging Caribbean melodies\, led by the entrancing singer\, Lunise–all combining for a truly magical experience. The band\, which Morse describes as Voudu Rock and Roots\, has consistently gigged at the famed Hotel Oloffson in Port-au-Prince\, Haiti since 1990\, where the performances are known to take on another dimension. People frequently describe a spiritual sensation when describing a RAM concert. You don’t simply go to a RAM concert\, you experience one.

SUMMARY:StoryHarvest and the Finale of the Spirit of the Suffragettes: Toko Telo and Katani
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our 9th Annual StoryHarvest and the final event the Spirit of the Suffragettes Summer Festival and Community Resource Fair. Just as farmers reap the harvest\, providing sustenance for all\, StoryHarvest is a time to celebrate all our harvests–the results of seeds sown through music\, art\, education\, agriculture\, tolerance\, and everything we do to build strong\, healthy\, tolerant communities. The century-old suffragette message needs to be heard and updated to be made more inclusive. Women\, especially women of color\, still struggle for equity in their everyday lives.  \n\n\n\nWe’ll bring history alive with music\, positioning the suffragettes as radical role models to explore gender imbalance throughout society–from music festivals to single mother households in low-wealth communities. The Spirit of the Suffragettes is an 8-week summer concert series and Women’s Resource Fair celebrating the history of radical historical activists through an updated and more racially/economically inclusive lens. We’re presenting female and gender non-conforming musicians (predominantly women of color) alongside a resource fair highlighting the organizations and opportunities that support women and families in our extremely low-wealth neighborhood.  \n\n\n\nThank you to the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M.
