A combo of demo and hands on\, we will utilize basic ingredients and build skills which empower greater confidence in the kitchen. Intaba Liff-Anderson is a graduate of Anne Marie Colbin’s Natural Gourmet Cooking School and has been cooking and teaching classes using seasonal and whole ingredients for 25 years. Intaba is the Head Chef at Blue Mountain Center\, and a Kitchen Sanctuary educator. She specializes in diverse health-supportive cooking styles from many traditions.  \n\n\n\nCo-sponsored by Unity House.

SUMMARY:NATURE Lab Workshop with Maria Michails: Air Quality [CANCELED/COVID]
DESCRIPTION:Due to COVID rates and concern for community safety\, this event has been CANCELED.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAir pollution is one of the more pervasive and invisible environmental health hazards of cities and has been in the public consciousness for several decades. The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 3.4 million people globally die prematurely as a result of outdoor air pollution each year. In the US a 2019 study\, contradicting previous EPA reports\, found that “more than 100\,000 Americans each year die of heart attacks\, strokes and other illnesses caused by air pollution spewed from factories\, motor vehicles and even bucolic-seeming farmland.”  \n\n\n\nAir pollution is not just an urban problem. Contributing to poor air quality in rural regions are activities such as fossil fuel extraction\, mining\, and large-scale commercial farming operations\, affecting small towns and farming communities. When government air monitoring doesn’t lead to regulatory enforcement of polluters\, how can the public protect themselves? In this workshop we will learn about the different types of air pollutants that may be in the air at any given time in our immediate area\, from particulates to gases. Maria Michails will also demonstrate several do-it-yourself approaches and devices that can monitor one’s immediate air quality and monitoring spikes and patterns over time. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Maria Michails:\n\n\n\nMaria Michails is a Canadian artist whose art installations and community-based projects are at the nexus of art\, science and technology. She has exhibited throughout North America and Europe and has published essays and articles in journals and edited volumes. Her art projects have been featured in Scientific American\, The Alt\, the Albany Times Union\, as well as books and catalogues. She is currently a PhD candidate and SSRHC doctoral fellow in Electronic Arts at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy\, New York\, where she has developed a series of community-based air monitoring projects with community participants in Albany\, NY and in the oil fields of southeastern Saskatchewan.

SUMMARY:Extinction Rebellion Roger Hallam Speaks About Climate Crisis
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: Roger was unable to get permission to enter the U.S. so he’s Skyping in!  \n\n\n\nWhat can we all do to avert catastrophe and avoid extinction? Roger Hallam has answers. In his new book\, “Common Sense for the 21st Century: Only Nonviolent Rebellion Can Now Stop Climate Breakdown and Social Collapse\,” Roger Hallam outlines how movements around the world need to come together now to start doing what works: engaging in mass civil disobedience to make real change happen. The book gives people the tools to understand not only why mass disruption\, mass arrests\, and mass sacrifice are necessary but also details how to carry out acts of civil disobedience effectively\, respectfully and nonviolently. It bypasses contemporary political theory\, and instead is inspired by Thomas Paine\, the pragmatic 18th-century revolutionary whose pamphlet Common Sense sparked the American Revolution. “Common Sense for the 21st Century” urges us to confront the truth about climate change and argues forcefully that only a revolution of society and the state\, similar to the turn that Paine urged the Americans to take into the political unknown\, can save us now. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Roger Hallam:\n\n\n\nIn April 2018\, Roger Hallam met with a group of 15 activists\, environmentalists\, and scientists in a café in Bristol. Along with Gail Bradbrook and Simon Bramwell\, he and others founded ExtinctionRebellion.  A former organic farmer and long-time climate change activist\, Hallam has been on successful hunger strikes\, been arrested 10 times and has served a prison term\, all in the service of preventing a climate catastrophe. \n\n\n\nHe holds nothing back: “Life as we know it is over\, hell is on the way\, and the only half decent thing to do now is to rebel against the governments which are planning the death of our children.  What scientists have told us endlessly for 30 years is now coming true. Climate breakdown is now everywhere.  We face social collapse\, war and starvation–and extinction.” \n\n\n\nRoger inspired Extinction Rebellion with his paper “Pivoting to the Real Issue\,” which argued that a mass nonviolent rebellion against the regimes leading the world toward destruction was now both possible and necessary.  Extinction Rebellion has chapters in more than 70 countries.  Extinction Rebellion/Capital Region is one of them.  \n\n\n\nRoger is coming to the United States to tell the American people that life as they know it is over–climate and ecological breakdown and the collapse of our weather patterns is now inevitable.  He says that huge fires\, massive floods and new diseases will only get many times worse. The only sane response in his view is immediate nonviolent mass civil disobedience against the governments responsible for this outrage\, and to promote the mass mobilization plan of Extinction Rebellion inAmerica. \n\n\n\nHe will be speaking to activists and supporters but most importantly to ordinary Americans to remind them of their own rebellious history and what democracy really means–government by the people for the people. \n\n\n\nThis talk by Roger Hallam at The Sanctuary for Independent Media is made possible by volunteer labor\, thousands of small donations and invaluable support from many organizations. \n\n\n\nThe Sanctuary for Independent Media is a community media arts center located in an historic former church in Troy\, NY.  The Sanctuary hosts screening\, production and performance facilities\, training in media production and a meeting space for artists\, activists and independent media makers of all kinds.

DESCRIPTION:This Martin Luther King Labor Celebration\, begun in 1999 by the Solidarity Committee of the Capital District\, will be held in Troy for the first time. A short segment will be shown of M.L.K.’s 1967 speech “The Three Evils of Society\,” where he talks about the need for a redistribution of wealth in America. This is why Martin Luther King the phrase/quote below. \n\n\n\nNow we have access to healthcare\, it seems that we have a healthcare system that is equal for everyone\, nobody gets denied care because of color or gender\, we even get assistance to pay\, if we need it. Still\, our health care system is not equal\, it is based on income. Until all people have equal access to the same care\, regardless of their income\, the health disparities continue to exist\, and his quote prevails. So his vision is what we are aiming for with the Health Autonomy Clinic\, a holistic health approach equal for all. ” \n\n\n\nTaína Asili: \n\n\n\nTaína Asili is a New York-based Puerto Rican singer\, filmmaker and activist carrying on the tradition of her ancestors\, fusing past and present struggles into one soulful and defiant voice. Taína Asili y la Banda Rebelde combines powerful vocals carrying themes of hope and liberation with an energetic fusion of Afro-Latin\, reggae and rock. DESCRIPTION:As part of the Sanctuary for Independent Media’s growing Nature LAB\, JJ Luceno and Dr. Frank Coughlin are working to establish a central space in Troy to share health skills\, provide basic integrative care and explore ways to build networks of community health. Though caring for our elders\, our children\, or cooking soul-nourishing food for family or friends may not be deemed ‘real’ healthcare\, they know that in fact\, it’s what holds us together and keeps us sane. Let’s bring our skills together to build a space where creative\, joyful health is possible and accessible. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn Tuesday\, December 17th we will continue to build towards a permanent health autonomy space as part of the Nature Lab Center. This space would provide basic integrative care\, be a hub for health skill shares\, and serve as the heart of a growing health network. He works as an ER physician at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield and Samaritan Hospital in Troy. He helps run the “Health Autonomy at the End of Empire” podcast and is a member of the Lebanon Health Assembly. Coughlin is excited to build on the generations of strong communities in the Capital Region and to foster health autonomy as a liberatory practice. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJJ Luceno is usually found tight-roping between the plant world and the story universe. She has worked as an educator in many settings: in the woods and urban gardens with children\, in shelters with survivors of domestic violence and facilitating health\, and in sex and puberty education with families. She believes in the undeniable need for liberation medicine and hopes that storytelling and skillsharing can help us reimagine the ways we can care for ourselves and each other. DESCRIPTION:Let Nikki Rogers guide us in yoga practice dedicated to healing arts and mindfulness. Nikki has devoted the past decade of her professional life to promoting the health\, and wellbeing of the community of Albany. She began her personal journey into yoga in 2005 and in 2012 a 200-hour Hatha Yoga teacher training opened the door to her dream of sharing yoga with the Albany community as a pathway to stress relief and a healthy lifestyle. Nikki’s classes could be described as “beginner plus.” She designs her classes specifically to be done by people with little experience with the practice\, while still providing a challenge to all skill levels. Linking breath and movement for a relaxing practice\, Nikki safely guide students into poses and tailors each session to the individual needs of each of her classes. \n\n\n\nThis event will be taking place after the NATURE Lab Open Hours workshop: Next Epoch Seed Library with Ellie Irons.

The Next Epoch Seed Library is crowd-sourced seed library for spontaneous urban plants\, otherwise known as weeds. Join environmental artist Ellie Irons in a seed-sorting workshop where you will learn seed identification\, the impact of intra-species genetic diversity\, and receive your very own Evening Primrose seeds to distribute throughout the growing ecology of Troy! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Ellie Irons:\n\n\n\nEllie Irons is an artist and educator based in Brooklyn and Troy\, New York. She works in a variety of media\, from video to workshops to re-wilding experiments\, to reveal how human and more-than-human lives intertwine with other earth systems. Her recent work focuses on plants\, people and urban ecosystems in the so-called Anthropocene. She is a cofounder of the Next Epoch Seed Library and the Environmental Performance Agency. Irons received her BA from Scripps College in Los Angeles and her MFA from Hunter College\, CUNY in New York. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Electronic Arts at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute\, where she is researching the intersection of socially engaged art\, community science\, and urban ecology as a means for envisioning and enacting multispecies solidarity in the face of climate chaos.

DESCRIPTION:The quintet Pilgrim\, founded by Zurich-based tenor saxophonist Christoph Irniger\, has over the years become one of the most exciting ensembles in young European jazz. Later Viridiana Martinez joined him infiltrating the female side of the detention center. \n\n\n\n“The Infiltrators” documents the work of the activist DREAMERS as they navigate inside the detention center\, outsmarting the agents and organizing to free detainees. “The Infiltrators shows we are not powerless. We can fight back and be effective\,” said Martinez. We’re taking our agency back\, she continues. “We need allies and we need people to have our back and to be standing beside us but to not speak for us.” \n\n\n\nUnable to shoot inside the actual detention center\, directors Rivera and Cristina Ibarra\, opted for mixing genres and experimenting with adding scripted material. “The story needed an innovative approach because it’s about people who go into a place where you can’t film\,” said Rivera. \n\n\n\nUsing memory workshops with Saavedra\, Martinez and Rojas\, as well as the Freedom of Information Act\, Rivera and Ibarra worked meticulously to recreate the sounds\, colors and textures of the detention center. They also worked hard to hire actors who physically resembled their counterparts and could embody their essence. \n\n\n\nThe film is a testimony to the steadfast commitment of the DREAMERS\, the detainees they served and to the power of the Latinx community’s vision and heroism. “We’re here to push back and to tell a story in which immigrants are hacking the system and are smarter than their opponents\,” explains Rivera. “Immigrants not as victims\, but as leaders\, as visionaries.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore About the Co-Sponsors:\n\n\n\nCapital District Border Watch: The scope of this committee will be to monitor the situation at the border and respond with direct action to human rights\, humanitarian crises\, and militarization at the border. DESCRIPTION:Explore strategies that blur the lines between documentary and fiction\, from script writing to media activism to studio production to post-production. Alex Rivera is an award-winning filmmaker whose work explores issues that impact the Latino community\, particularly on subjects of labor\, immigration\, and gender. He is best known for his science fiction film\, Sleep Dealer (2008)\, which screened at the Sundance Film Festival\, and has made a number of mockumentaries particularly focusing on the transnational struggles of immigrants. Preceding the workshop at 6pm is a Community Meal and Resource Exchange: connect and broaden the network of resistance\, with community organizers from Capital District Border Watch\, ICE-Free Capital District\, Troy Sanctuary\, Saratoga Immigration Coalition (SIC)\, and Extinction Rebellion Capital Region. SUMMARY:NATURE Lab Workshop with Kayla Coldsnow: Waste Compost
DESCRIPTION:Come learn about where our waste comes from\, the issues associated with it\, and how to reduce it! We will talk about refusing\, reducing\, reusing\, recycling\, and composting. Techniques will span from cheap or even money saving to expensive\, easy and sometimes easier to hard\, and from no to large effects on your health. There will be an apartment-style worm composting bin present to see as well.  \n\n\n\nKayla Coldsnow is a 5th year biology Ph.D. student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Her research investigates the many ways humans are impacting our vital freshwater ecosystems\, including a variety of contaminants and invasive species. In addition to her research\, Kayla also loves to complete STEAM outreach with a variety of organizations including NATURE Lab. At NATURE Lab\, she has held workshops that focus on freshwater ecosystems\, careers involving STEAM\, composting\, and our waste.
