SUMMARY:Health Autonomy Clinic: Harm Reduction in the Age of Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:Join NATURE Lab and the Health Autonomy Network for a workshop focused on harm reduction solidarity in the age of COVID-19. We will view the opiate epidemic as a crisis within a crisis\, and examine the history of harm reduction networks as well as current harm reduction initiatives and resources. The event also features guests who will discuss current strategies in Harm Reduction and the current COVID-19 crisis\, including Nancy Campbell\, author of “OD: Naloxone and the Politics of Overdose\,” who will speak about the history of an unnatural disaster—drug overdose—and the emergence of Naloxone as a social and technological solution. Additional participants include Frank Coughlin\, MD and Heath Autonomy Clinic Co-Coordinator; Ed Fox\, Harm Reduction Manager with Project Safe Point; Jasmine Landry\, co-founder of Albany Med Addiction Coalition; Leah Miller-lloyd\, harm reductionist and fourth-year medical student at Albany Medical College; and Ariela Zamcheck\, DO. Preceded by a community potluck. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Nancy Campbell\n\n\n\nNancy D. Campbell is Professor and Department Head of Science and Technology Studies at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy\, New York\, where she has taught for over two decades. Her most recent book is OD: Naloxone and the Politics of Overdose Prevention (MIT Press\, 2020). She was a FRIAS Senior Fellow and Marie Curie Fellow of the European Union at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) in 2017-2018. She is one of three editors of the Journal of the Social History of Alcohol and Drugs. Other books include Discovering Addiction: The Science and Politics of Substance Abuse Research (University of Michigan Press\, 2007); Gendering Addiction: The Politics of Drug Treatment in a Neurochemical World (co-authored with Elizabeth Ettorre; Palgrave\, 2011); The Narcotic Farm: The Rise and Fall of America’s First Prison for Drug Addicts (co-authored with JP Olsen and Luke Walden; Abrams\, 2008); and Using Women: Gender\, Drug Policy\, and Social Justice (Routledge\, 2000).

She’s interested in ideals of home and community while working to develop aesthetics rooted in her childhood and upbringing in a muslim environment in the Middle East.  \n\n\n\nAbu Zaineh has exhibited her work internationally across: São Luis and Lisbon\, Portugal; Mexico City; NYC\, USA; Toronto\, London\, and Windsor\, Canada; and was one of the first artists to participate in collaborative residency with the Ontario Science Centre and MOCA Toronto (Canada).  She is currently pursuing her PhD in Electronic Arts at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy\, NY.

SUMMARY:Health Autonomy Clinic: Mask-Making Networks and How to Make a Mask
DESCRIPTION:Join the Health Autonomy Network to find out about local mutual aid networks making masks\, and learn how to make your own. [REMEMBER the use of a mask is NOT a substitute for keeping a distance of 6 feet from other people whenever possible.] This zoom workshop is led by Eileen J. Raab\, with the New Lebanon Health Assembly and  “Community Care Planning\,” a mutual aid organization based in Columbia County\, NY. Of all the failings of the US capitalist model of healthcare that have developed in the Covid Pandemic\, none is perhaps as well-known and despicable as the shortage of masks.  Across the country\, states and hospitals are scrambling to purchase masks and PPE (personal protective equipment).  Because of a lack of preparation and a business model that does not plan for emergencies\, this most essential of items is in critical shortage\, leaving healthcare workers\, grocery workers\, food workers\, sanitation workers\, and millions of other frontline people without this protection. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Workshop:\n\n\n\nAt the same time as the governments fail us\, local communities are self-organizing their own response.  In what started as an individual action\, the DIY Mask Making movement has blossomed as people across the country scramble to assess needs\, compile resources\, hand sew masks\, build distribution networks\, and find ways to protect the frontline workers they love.   \n\n\n\nWe have partnered with New Lebanon Health Assembly and  “Community Care Planning”\, a mutual aid organization based in Columbia County\, NY for this Zoom workshop.  Eileen J. DESCRIPTION:We are in the midst of a “tsunami of social life” that is unprecedented in modern life.  The age-old ideas we had barely begun to formulate around community health and care are now being required in ways that no one was prepared for. Medical staff don’t have the protective equipment they need\, children are out of school\,  many are without work\, so many people are alone and afraid. We are learning how to hold each other without being together. This webinar hosted by the Health Autonomy Clinic will focus on: helping you wade through resources\, answer questions and also point towards building mutual aid networks throughout the region. The focus of the call will be this question: What questions do you have about the Coronavirus and community support? During the webinar\, we will answer questions that people have submitted beforehand. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Webinar:\n\n\n\nWe’ll break the webinar into these parts:Part 1: review of medical information Part 2: what to do at home (i.e. immune support\, staying connected\, point to resources about mental health)Part 3: community support networks that exist or are being built up\, ie what can we do for the community  \n\n\n\nAbout the Presenters:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAriela Zamcheck\, DO is a family physician currently studying at the the School of Public Health at SUNY Albany and the New York State Department of Health as part of a fellowship program. She grew up in the Bronx\, NY\, received her BA at Oberlin College\, attended medical school at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Maine\, and family medicine residency at Phelps Hospital in Sleepy Hollow\, NY. She is interested in learning to shape public health practices to address health disparities.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrank Coughlin\, MD is originally from the Hudson Valley\, but is now living in New Lebanon. He works as an ER physician at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield and Samaritan Hospital in Troy. He helps run the “Health Autonomy at the End of Empire” podcast and is a member of the Lebanon Health Assembly. Coughlin is excited to build on the generations of strong communities in the Capital Region and to foster health autonomy as a liberatory practice. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAileen Javier is a Community Health Worker/ Outreach Educator/Family Advocate. She is passionate about fomenting community health by supporting and empowering people to successfully navigate the local social and health care system. Experienced providing social support\, culturally appropriate health education and connecting people with the resources available in the community. She has a certificate in Community Outreach Education and worked as a Family Advocate in Massachusetts. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJesse Marshall is a trainer and consultant around worker-ownership and self-governance. He’s a co-founder of Capital Bookkeeping Cooperative and works on self-organization and facilitation for Extinction Rebellion in the Capital Region and NYC. He’s lived in Troy since 2013.

Zimmermann offers a glimpse into the ever-evolving constellation of practices known as “documentary” and the way in which they investigate\, engage with\, and interrogate the world. Collected here for the first time are her celebrated essays and speculations about documentary\, experimental\, and new media published outside of traditional scholarly venues. These essays envision documentary as a complex ecology composed of different technologies\, sets of practices\, and specific relationships to communities\, engagement\, politics\, and social struggles. Through the lens of reverse engineering―the concept that ideas just like objects can be disassembled to learn how they work and then rebuilt into something new and better―Zimmermann explores how numerous small-scale documentary works present strategies of intervention into existing power structures. Adaptive to their context\, modular\, and unfixed\, the documentary practices she explores exploit both sophisticated high-end professional and consumer-grade amateur technologies\, moving through different political terrains\, different platforms\, and different exhibition contexts. Together these essays demonstrate documentary’s role as a conceptual practice to think through how the world is organized and to imagine ways that it might be reorganized with actions\, communities\, and ideas.

SUMMARY:NATURE Lab Workshop with Maria Michails: Air Quality [CANCELED/COVID]
DESCRIPTION:Due to COVID rates and concern for community safety\, this event has been CANCELED.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAir pollution is one of the more pervasive and invisible environmental health hazards of cities and has been in the public consciousness for several decades. The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 3.4 million people globally die prematurely as a result of outdoor air pollution each year. In the US a 2019 study\, contradicting previous EPA reports\, found that “more than 100\,000 Americans each year die of heart attacks\, strokes and other illnesses caused by air pollution spewed from factories\, motor vehicles and even bucolic-seeming farmland.”  \n\n\n\nAir pollution is not just an urban problem. Contributing to poor air quality in rural regions are activities such as fossil fuel extraction\, mining\, and large-scale commercial farming operations\, affecting small towns and farming communities. When government air monitoring doesn’t lead to regulatory enforcement of polluters\, how can the public protect themselves? In this workshop we will learn about the different types of air pollutants that may be in the air at any given time in our immediate area\, from particulates to gases. Maria Michails will also demonstrate several do-it-yourself approaches and devices that can monitor one’s immediate air quality and monitoring spikes and patterns over time. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Maria Michails:\n\n\n\nMaria Michails is a Canadian artist whose art installations and community-based projects are at the nexus of art\, science and technology. She has exhibited throughout North America and Europe and has published essays and articles in journals and edited volumes. Her art projects have been featured in Scientific American\, The Alt\, the Albany Times Union\, as well as books and catalogues. She is currently a PhD candidate and SSRHC doctoral fellow in Electronic Arts at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy\, New York\, where she has developed a series of community-based air monitoring projects with community participants in Albany\, NY and in the oil fields of southeastern Saskatchewan.

SUMMARY:Extinction Rebellion Roger Hallam Speaks About Climate Crisis
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: Roger was unable to get permission to enter the U.S. so he’s Skyping in!  \n\n\n\nWhat can we all do to avert catastrophe and avoid extinction? Roger Hallam has answers. In his new book\, “Common Sense for the 21st Century: Only Nonviolent Rebellion Can Now Stop Climate Breakdown and Social Collapse\,” Roger Hallam outlines how movements around the world need to come together now to start doing what works: engaging in mass civil disobedience to make real change happen. The book gives people the tools to understand not only why mass disruption\, mass arrests\, and mass sacrifice are necessary but also details how to carry out acts of civil disobedience effectively\, respectfully and nonviolently. It bypasses contemporary political theory\, and instead is inspired by Thomas Paine\, the pragmatic 18th-century revolutionary whose pamphlet Common Sense sparked the American Revolution. “Common Sense for the 21st Century” urges us to confront the truth about climate change and argues forcefully that only a revolution of society and the state\, similar to the turn that Paine urged the Americans to take into the political unknown\, can save us now. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Roger Hallam:\n\n\n\nIn April 2018\, Roger Hallam met with a group of 15 activists\, environmentalists\, and scientists in a café in Bristol. Along with Gail Bradbrook and Simon Bramwell\, he and others founded ExtinctionRebellion.  A former organic farmer and long-time climate change activist\, Hallam has been on successful hunger strikes\, been arrested 10 times and has served a prison term\, all in the service of preventing a climate catastrophe. \n\n\n\nHe holds nothing back: “Life as we know it is over\, hell is on the way\, and the only half decent thing to do now is to rebel against the governments which are planning the death of our children.  What scientists have told us endlessly for 30 years is now coming true. Climate breakdown is now everywhere.  We face social collapse\, war and starvation–and extinction.” \n\n\n\nRoger inspired Extinction Rebellion with his paper “Pivoting to the Real Issue\,” which argued that a mass nonviolent rebellion against the regimes leading the world toward destruction was now both possible and necessary.  Extinction Rebellion has chapters in more than 70 countries.  Extinction Rebellion/Capital Region is one of them.  \n\n\n\nRoger is coming to the United States to tell the American people that life as they know it is over–climate and ecological breakdown and the collapse of our weather patterns is now inevitable.  He says that huge fires\, massive floods and new diseases will only get many times worse. The only sane response in his view is immediate nonviolent mass civil disobedience against the governments responsible for this outrage\, and to promote the mass mobilization plan of Extinction Rebellion inAmerica. \n\n\n\nHe will be speaking to activists and supporters but most importantly to ordinary Americans to remind them of their own rebellious history and what democracy really means–government by the people for the people. \n\n\n\nThis talk by Roger Hallam at The Sanctuary for Independent Media is made possible by volunteer labor\, thousands of small donations and invaluable support from many organizations. \n\n\n\nThe Sanctuary for Independent Media is a community media arts center located in an historic former church in Troy\, NY.  The Sanctuary hosts screening\, production and performance facilities\, training in media production and a meeting space for artists\, activists and independent media makers of all kinds.

So his vision is what we are aiming for with the Health Autonomy Clinic\, a holistic health approach equal for all. ” \n\n\n\nTaína Asili: \n\n\n\nTaína Asili is a New York-based Puerto Rican singer\, filmmaker and activist carrying on the tradition of her ancestors\, fusing past and present struggles into one soulful and defiant voice. Let’s bring our skills together to build a space where creative\, joyful health is possible and accessible. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn Tuesday\, December 17th we will continue to build towards a permanent health autonomy space as part of the Nature Lab Center. This space would provide basic integrative care\, be a hub for health skill shares\, and serve as the heart of a growing health network. He works as an ER physician at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield and Samaritan Hospital in Troy. He helps run the “Health Autonomy at the End of Empire” podcast and is a member of the Lebanon Health Assembly. Coughlin is excited to build on the generations of strong communities in the Capital Region and to foster health autonomy as a liberatory practice. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJJ Luceno is usually found tight-roping between the plant world and the story universe. She has worked as an educator in many settings: in the woods and urban gardens with children\, in shelters with survivors of domestic violence and facilitating health\, and in sex and puberty education with families. She believes in the undeniable need for liberation medicine and hopes that storytelling and skillsharing can help us reimagine the ways we can care for ourselves and each other.
