SUMMARY:Corn Workshops: Fermentation Fridays
DESCRIPTION:Let’s ferment food and ideas in preparation for StoryHarvest 2023. Travel with Amy Halloran and Ellie Markovitch through many different dishes\, from corn pones to puddings. This virtual workshop is part of the corn workshop series. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\nWe invite you to a series of remote and in person workshops to study and explore corn\, one of the few grains native to the Americas. This is a grain we question and love\, a food with deep cultural roots – not just of one culture\, but of many. Let’s appreciate these roots\, and shower this amazing food with love and wonder. We will discuss this staple food\, and our many histories of it\, and use it in a variety of ways\, including fermentation.  \n\n\n\nThe first two workshops are online\, and part of a series called Fermentation Fridays. These are hosted by Ellie Markovitch and Amy Halloran\, and we will be thinking about corn. In the first class we will make a beverage\, corn kvass or “Aluá de Milho.” The second class will consider how corn is such an adept and adapting traveling. We’ll make some of corn’s many shapes\, from corn pones to puddings. When we meet in person\, please bring your own corn stories and recipes. We will cook as a community and make a variety of cornbreads \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAmy Halloran is a writer and change agent\, working to add social values and economic viability to farms and communities. The author of THE NEW BREAD BASKET\, her activism for specialty grains and changing emergency feeding programs share a common thread of restoring human values to the work of farming and the act of feeding each other. She is working on a history of herself\, bread\, and Troy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEllie Markovitch is a Lecturer at the University of Maine Department of Communication and Journalism. Her work revolves around media and food literacy. Applying her passion for innovative and sustainable food practices\, she uses food as a starting point for conversations and community building. Her approach draws individuals into engaged visual storytelling that build experiences and engage communities. DESCRIPTION:People’s Health Sanctuary is excited to host our third and final Healing Day of the season as part of the Sanctuary’s Campus Wide Open House. Healing Day is a way to connect with community members\, healers\, providers and anyone invested in building a robust network for communal health across the Capital District.  As in July and August\, we will be offering services from holistic healers\, resource sharing by healthcare providers and service groups\, children’s activities\, and free food.  \n\n\n\nWe strive to “re-member” what community health can look like\, so we welcome community members\, and we will be offering healing work on donation basis including body work\, yoga\, and energy work. SUMMARY:Hudson Mohawk Magazine Open Hours
DESCRIPTION:Hudson Mohawk Magazine (HMM) is radio for the community\, by community volunteers. If you are curious about the radio and have questions\, if you’re interested in getting involved\, or if you need some support in production\, these open hours are a perfect time to come to the main Sanctuary space to work directly with HMM producers.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur volunteer HMM producers come with a range of skills and experiences. Many volunteers join with little to no experience. These sessions give support to producers of all levels. This is also an opportunity to train new engineers and hosts.  \n\n\n\nJoin our excellent team of grassroots journalists and report on local stories that interest you. SUMMARY:Creative Place-Making on the Hudson: La Retoire "Sediments" Canoe Journey + Lewis Pugh Swim
DESCRIPTION:Where: Ingalls Avenue Boat Launch\, 1 Ingalls Avenue\, Troy\, NY \n\n\n\nJoin the Sanctuary and Riverkeeper at Ingalls Avenue Boat Launch in North Troy to celebrate creative engagement with the Hudson River.  \n\n\n\nLe Ratoire is creating a film project entitled “Sediments”. On September 2nd\, join us at 11:00-11:30 am as they depart from the Ingalls Avenue boat launch in North Troy with their canoes to travel south along the Hudson River to New York City. The artists will be traveling by canoe and will use foraged plants to process the film documentation of their trip. Le Ratoire will return in 2024 to lead a plant-based filmmaking workshop with us. Come celebrate the beginning of their river-based creative place-making journey! \n\n\n\n12:00 pm August 31st \n\n\n\nThe Lewis Pugh Foundation will join us on 8/31 at noon for a press event marking Pugh’s Hudson River Swim as he passes through the Capital Region. Members of the Sanctuary’s Water Justice Lab\, NATURE Lab\, and Eco-Art Trail projects are excited to commemorate this river-based journey! \n\n\n\nMore about the two projects: \n\n\n\nOn August 13 2023\, Lewis Pugh began his 315-mile (507-km) swim down the Hudson River\, from its source to its end at New York City. He is doing this to highlight the critical role rivers play in a habitable planet. Lewis will explore the interconnectedness of rivers and oceans\, and stress the urgent need to restore\, protect and respect them. “If we want healthy oceans we also need healthy rivers — it’s that simple.” \n\n\n\nThe end of the swim will coincide with the UN General Assembly Week\, Climate Week NYC 2023\, and the UN Secretary General’s Climate Ambition Summit. Learn more on the Lewis Pugh Foundation website. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLe Ratoire is a filmmaking collective composed of Léa Lanoë\, Pierre Borel  (Labo L’argent\,Marseille\, France)\, Katherine Bauer\, Joyce Lainé\, and Loïc Verdillon (Atelier MTK\, Grenoble\, France). Since 2019\, they have elaborated a methodology for collective filmmaking wherein each film is defined by a particular set of parameters; both technical and\, especially\, situational. Sometimes referring to their practice as “action-filming”\, the members of le Ratoire meet to create all aspects and stages of the film in a single go\, from filming\, processing\, and printing to the final edit. The name “Le Ratoire” refers to the verb in french\, rater\, that means “to miss\, fail\, or flunk” and laboratoire\, indicating the analog hand-made laboratory practices that each film is made with. \n\n\n\n“Sediments” is a film conversation of “The River that flows both ways” or Muhheakantuck in Machican (The Hudson River) made from the water and plants with those who live along her shores. They will canoe down the river’s tidal estuary from the Federal Dam in Troy to the mouth of the ocean in NYC. This portion is a unique body of brackish waters with four tides per day\, influenced by the ocean. They plan their travels to go with the ebb and flow. Camping along her shores for roughly 3 weeks and filming in 16mm\, they will process during the journey with a non-toxic developer made only with plants\, wood ash\, and sea salt. They will also record sounds and conduct interviews with local people\, and give free workshops and screenings along the river. They will harvest the commonly referred to invasive plants\, as they are too plentiful and choking out other plant diversity. This can also raise awareness about the different plants existing along the river. They hope that these interactions create a two-way flowing dialogue about life along the river; the flora and fauna as well as the inhabitants of towns\, estates and industries; their buildings both abandoned and active. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe process of making a film about the first industrialized river of the United States needs to be a conversation and collaboration with its inhabitants\, exploring what it is today and what it carries from the past. They will be using 16mm film (produced in New York\, by Kodak) which emerged from the Industrial Revolution using by-products of the industries; steel\, coal and cattle; but they are also moving in the opposite direction by processing with only non-industrial products and moving slowly with our own bodies as power. The public events they host will help all of us engage in the river in a new way. “As more people play in or near our waterways\, public concern and awareness grow\, leading to increased community advocacy.” declares Riverkeeper in their campaigns on how to help the Hudson River.1 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is a collaboration between the iEAR Presents series with support from RPI’s ARTS department and School of Humanities\, Arts and Social Science\, and from the New York State Council for the Arts/ NYSCA\, with The Sanctuary for Independent Media\, and from NEA Our Town “Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail” creative placemaking grant. \n\n\n\nIn 2024 NATURE Lab will invite La Ratoire return to screen “Sediments” along with their other films. They will also teach a “Plant Processing Workshop”. In this plant processing workshop students will learn how to make a plant- based developer that will develop black and white 16mm film (also works to process 35mm film\, still or moving images\, or any film emulsion\, including photo paper emulsion). This workshop will cover the material history and ingredients of celluloid\, what happens during exposure and development\, how industrial chemicals were developed over plant based ones and why. Then\, we will learn the ingredients in plant developers that can create the same results as the industrially produced ones. We will learn about how to harvest\, when to harvest\, and the preparation of the tea/extraction in order to achieve the desired results\, as well as how to embrace the nature of chance and the destandardization of development. Plant developers are not trying to just mimic their industrial counterparts but are their own wild selves. \n\n\n\nBiographies of Le Ratoire Members\n\n\n\nKatherine Bauer manipulates celluloid film and the cinematic apparatus encompassingthe practices of moving and still image\, installation and live performance. Bauer invokesmythologies and folklore as told through the means of obsolete technologies fusing them with mineral and vegital communications. She is represented by Microscope Gallery (New York). Her work has been exhibited and screened at; Hybris Festival (Brazil)\, The Pompidou Center (France)\, Lausanne Underground Film Festival (Switzerland)\, Estudio Teorema (Mexico)\, Shoot the Lobster (Germany); Anthology Film Archives\, The Knockdown Center\, The Museum of the Moving Image (New York) among others. Bauer received a NYSCA Individual Artist Grant (2023)\, ESP TV Unit 11 residency (2017)\, Handmade Film Institute research grant (2016)\, a Cité Internationale des Arts Paris Residency (2012-13)\, and a Carla Bruni-Sarkozy Foundation Fellowship (2012-13). She holds a BA in Film Arts from Bard College and a MFA from NYU Steinhardt in Studio Art. She is on the Board of Directors for The Film-Makers Cooperative of New York and a member of the film collectives Optipus (NY)\, Le Ratoire\, and Atelier MTK (France). She also studied herbalism and worked on various medicinal gardens throughout her life. In the Hudson Valley\, NY she worked for Good Fight Herb Company\, Common Hands Farm\, and The Abode. She currently lives and works between New York and France.  \n\n\n\nPierre Borel is a saxophonist\, composer and filmmaker\, working in the field of improvised and experimental music and experimental cinema. From 2006 to 2017 he was residing in Berlin taking part of the high flow of ongoing creativity that is centered there. He has performed in most European countries\, Japan\, Russia and USA and is a regular playmate of Joel Grip\, Hannes Lingens\, Sven-Are Johansson\, Christian Lillinger\, Axel Dörner\, Tobias Delius to name a few. He obtained a master degree at the Jazz Institute in Berlin in 2008\, and continues questioning sound and composition through his studies in electro-acoustic music in Marseille. Together with Florian Bergmann and Hannes Lingens\, he was running the Umlaut Berlin collective that in recent years released a great number of records and organized four festivals of improvised music. He moved to Marseille in 2017\, and co-founded LaboLargent\, an artists run organization for experimental filmmakers. \n\n\n\nAfter studying history of art and literature in Paris (Université Paris-Diderot) and Berlin (TU)\, Léa Lanoë studied at Ecole National Superieur dʼArt in Bourges\, working on sound installations and collages. Between 2013 and 2017\, she lived in Berlin\, performed in the group Vermulscht\, and focused more on experimental filmmaking. In her work\, she often collaborates with musicians. In 2017\, she takes part in the Master degree of Documentary filmmaking in Lussas\, France\, where she makes her firstdocumentary film Nul Nʼest Censé\, screened in Les États Généraux du film documentaire\, Lussas\, Le Festival du Court Métrage de Clermont- Ferrand\, Festival les inattendus\, Lyon\, 2019. She now lives in Marseille\, where she created with Pierre Borel and other filmmakers LʼArgent\, an artists run laboratory for Analog filmmaking\, and works more and more with 16mm. \n\n\n\nLoïc Verdillon is a musician\, performer\, and printmaker. Between 2012 and 2019 he composed music for theater pieces by the company “mais ou l’as-tu.” Since 2010\, he’s been an active participant of the musical and cinematographic program at Le 102 in Grenoble\, France. Currently\, his research is focused on sound\, its materiality and forms. He built “yotta-phone\,” a performance for multiple megaphones\, played at different festivals in the summer of 2015. His graphic works focus on the sound shapes of Ernest Chladni in experimental engraving. In 2015\, he combined plastic and audio art for theinstallation of an “attraction park” made up of dissected loudspeakers\, working with the primitive elements of copper\, paper\, and magnets. Since 2016\, he has run and worked at Atelier MTK Independent Cinema Laboratory in Grenoble\, France. He has presented Expanded Cinema performances and organized 16mm workshops around the world\, in such places as Norway\, Italy\, Switzerland\, Germany\, France\, Czech Republic\, Belgium\, and Indonesia.  \n\n\n\nAlongside studies in physics and comparative literature\, Joyce Lainé (aka Lucrecia) begins making films through the encounters with people & visions from the NYC film scene (Anthology Film Archives\, Microscope Gallery\, and Christine Choy). She moves to Grenoble\, France and becomes involved in programming at the 102\, an alternative venue for experimental film\, music and collective organizations. She also joins Atelier MTK and after participating in a research seminar seeking to fabricate the 1903 autochrome color photography process on film\, creates a collective performance called “Fecula est-tu là?” (2017) with Clovis LeMaireCardoen\, Loic Verdillon\, and Etienne Caire. Her first personal film made in France was “40 active warheads” (2016)\, an adaptation of a poem by Daniel Owens\, mixing found and personal footage. Recent works include performances with the Un Ensemble\, Etienne Caire\, Pavel Viry\, and the films within the collective called “Le Ratoire.” Today she continues to work at Atelier MTK.

SUMMARY:The Insects are Present
DESCRIPTION:The Insects are Present is a participatory installation by artist Lisa Schonberg that engages with insects and their sound to compose music compositions. Alluding towards Marina Abramović’s 2010 work\, Schonberg’s installation asks audience members to spend an extended time listening to insects in real time\, both through hearing and touch. Schonberg developed this modular system during field research in Oregon\, the Brazilian Amazon\, the Mobile-Tensaw Delta (AL)\, and New York\, adapting recording and playback elements to insects and their sounds at each study site. Participants will be invited to contribute their own sounds to the work in an assertion of our ongoing connection with the insects in our shared living environments. \n\n\n\nThe installation will take place at Ellie Irons’ Lawn (Re)Disturbance Laboratory\, part of NATURE Lab and the Sanctuary’s Eco-Art Trail in North Troy. SUMMARY:DE-FENCE Part 1: Medicine in the Margins
DESCRIPTION:Join us at NATURE Lab for a multi-sensory drawing and plant-sensing workshop with artist Margaretha Haughwout. We will discover medicinal plants growing in the marginal spaces and edge conditions of the neighborhood\, discuss neighborhood environmental health conditions\, explore practices connected to territorial defense\, and sketch medicinal plants that have historically been used for the immune system. Participants will be given specially designed field notebooks where they can make observational notes and draw the medicinal plants they resonate with. With participants’ consent\, the creative results of this workshop will be repurposed and made a part of the permanent\, living DE-FENCE installation. This is Part 1 in the De-Fence series.  \n\n\n\nLocation: NATURE Lab courtyard at 3319 6th Ave. Meet at the back gate.  \n\n\n\nMediaSanctuary · A Multi-Sensorial Drawing and Plant-Sensing Workshop\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMargaretha Haughwout works with humans\, and the more-than-human\, across technologies and ecologies\, to cultivate a radical imagination that challenges proprietary regimes\, colonial temporalities\, and capitalist forms of labor. Her work manifests as speculative fabulation\, intervention\, participatory event\, walking tour\, experimental pedagogy\, installation\, and biological processes. Haughwout’s active collaborations include the Coven Intelligence Program\, with efrén cruz cortés\, the Guerrilla Grafters\, and Ruderal Witchcraft with Oliver Kellhammer. She created and maintains the Food Forest Studio in Central New York. \n\n\n\nHaughwout’s personal and collaborative artwork is exhibited nationally and internationally\, most recently\, at Stadwerkstatt in Linz\, Austria\, the Pixelache Festival in Helsinki\, Finland\, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco\, California\, and at Bennington College in Bennington\, Vermont. Haughwout received her MFA from the University of California Santa Cruz. She is Associate Professor of Emerging Media at Colgate University. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is a collaboration between the iEAR Presents series with support from RPI’s ARTS department and School of Humanities\, Arts and Social Science\, and from the New York State Council for the Arts/ NYSCA\, with The Sanctuary for Independent Media\, and from NEA Our Town “Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail” creative placemaking grant.  \n\n\n\nDE-FENCE Project \n\n\n\nDE-FENCE is a living installation and a series of community events at NATURE Lab under the umbrella of the Sanctuary’s growing Eco-Art Trail. The living installation is built in relationship to NATURE Lab’s back fence and the other emerging food forest networks and sign systems in the newly inaugurated space. DE-FENCE is an offering of perennial medicinal plants that support the immune system of humans while also enabling mutual support of the plants themselves and their critter companions through nutrient\, structure\, and insect attraction/ repulsion. The planting design and labeling system emerges out of community conversations and observation processes with the artist. DE-FENCE conflates collective health with territorial defense in opposition to medical and legal conceptions of immunity that derive from notions of private property.

SUMMARY:Youth Radio Workshop\, Pt.2
DESCRIPTION:When young people get behind the mic\, we are given fresh perspectives on stories. In this workshop\, youth will work with an adult to develop a story idea\, create questions\, record and edit an interview which will be aired on Hudson Mohawk Magazine.  \n\n\n\nYouth Sanctuary and Hudson Mohawk Magazine are coming together to offer this two-part workshop for young journalists when media literacy is more important than ever. This workshop will foster youth’s visions in creating a radio story. Participating youth should come with an adult who will help create the story from beginning to end. At the end of 3 months\, 90% of children who participate in Strong Me! experience a stabilization of their BMIs (Body Mass Index) and 90% demonstrate the development of new healthy habits including increased consumption of vegetables\, fruits\, water as well as increased frequency in exercise sessions per week. Three months after leaving the program\, 60% of children have maintained these habits. Strong Me! is a Stage 2 program that meets the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Strong Me! enables families to develop and sustain healthy health habits. He lives among his people\, who are originally from the Hudson Valley\, New York\, but now reside in Bowler\, Wisconsin. A spiritualist\, musician\, artist\, historian\, and sharer of knowledge\, Shawn has been fulfilling his path journey for the past few decades by doing a variety of sharing in his people’s ancestral lands as well as the Midwest. \n\n\n\nShawn describes himself as a “Helper” not only to his people but to all. He explains that his spiritual path is to share the many things given to him for spiritual direction and purpose. He does not have\, nor will accept\, any titles such as “Medicine Man” or “Shaman.” Shawn is also a traditional Native American storyteller\, drummer\, dancer\, singer\, and flute player. He is an ordained minister of the Universal Church of Light and a certified facilitator of White Bison’s Mending Broken Hearts. \n\n\n\nShawn has been fulfilling his path journey for the past few decades by doing a variety of sharing in his peoples ancestral lands as well as the Midwest. Shawn describes himself as a “Helper” to not only his people\, but to all of the Creator’s children. He explains that his Spiritual path is to share the many things given to him for direction and purpose. \n\n\n\n\nFlying Deer Nature Center (FDNC) is a nonprofit wilderness school and community dedicated to mentoring children\, youth\, adults\, and families in deep connection to nature\, self\, and others.\n\n\n\nOur work aims not only to teach naturalist practices and wilderness survival skills\, but also to foster in participants a lifelong relationship with nature and access to the gifts it brings: resilience\, creativity\, and the ability to listen deeply to ourselves and to others. We all need the benefits of connecting with the natural world and\, in like measure\, nature needs our care. This deep and reciprocal relationship with the earth is at the heart of our mission.  \n\n\n\n\nStockbridge-Munsee Youth  \n\n\n\n\nEleven Stockbridge-Munsee youth have journeyed from their homes on the Reservation in Bowler\, Wisconsin\, for a week of natural wonders with Flying Deer Nature Center’s summer camp. They complete their visit to the Northeast to discover and walk on the land of their ancestors: Freedom Square is located on settler lands of the village of Unawhat’s Castle\, where they will share with Shawn Stevens in songs\, games and Native education. After this public event\, the youth will have a radio workshop and boat rides on the Mahicanituck (Hudson River)\, who lived in harmony with nature for thousands of years\, before being forcibly removed from their ancestral lands. \n\n\n\n\nSanctuary Eco-Art Trail project: \n\n\n\n\nThe Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail is dedicated to celebrating the sacred Mohican soils we are honored to tend. We are beneficiaries of millennia of human history unfolding in a majestic river valley\, where the land has been nurtured by Indigenous hands and traumatized through industrial development and systemic inequity. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe Stockbridge-Munsee Tribe are in partnership on this project\, which features Stockbridge-Munsee as well as other Indigenous artists and musicians\, historians and storytellers\, eco-artists\, and muralists\, connecting Indigenous wisdom to visions for a future of healing and reparations. \n\n\n\n\n\n“We understand that one goal of the Eco-Art Trail is to continue to bring our stories to life. DESCRIPTION:Forensic River is a workshop with artist Isidora Fernandez where we will present a case for protecting life in our streams and rivers. We will also share the various methods of testing water we are involved in at NATURE Lab. We will ask participants to help us make strong arguments for the protection our waterways! This workshop is for all ages open to everyone!  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this public workshop\, artist Isidora Fernandez uses the facilities at NATURE Lab to further understand the injustices of the legacy of urban industrial pollutants such as sewage contamination and microplastics. Part of Fernandez’s month-long residency at NATURE Lab\, this workshop compliments our Water Justice Lab Source to Estuary Program and contributes to our growing NEA-supported Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail project. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIsidora Fernandez studied social communication (PUC)\, graduated in Ecotourism Management (UNAB) and did a Masters degree in Scientific\, Medical and Environmental Communication at UPF-BSM. During the last years\, she worked coordinating the Arts&Science department of Science For Change as creative producer\, developing exhibits\, designing science experiences\, participatory workshops and creative data collection methodologies for citizen science studies. \n\n\n\nScience For Change is a Spanish organization based in Barcelona. They work on citizen science projects\, promoting collaborative science. \n\n\n\n\n\nMediaSanctuary · Artist-in-Residence and the Legacy of Urban Industrial Pollutants in Hudson\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is a collaboration between the iEAR Presents series with support from RPI’s ARTS department and School of Humanities\, Arts and Social Science\, and from the New York State Council for the Arts/ NYSCA\, with The Sanctuary for Independent Media.  \n\n\n\nProgram background: Isidora Fernandez is our first Rubin Family Foundation Artist Resident at NATURE Lab. She will be in residence between June 21-July 21 2023 to work with the North Troy community. This residency will help lay the foundation for the future of NATURE Lab in North Troy by creating collaborative partnerships and programs that lead to creative solutions around our mission for social and environmental justice.  \n\n\n\nNATURE Lab has distinguished itself as a space that embraces the interdisciplinary areas of art and science. These art/sci practices place a distinct focus on an experiential engagement with life\, seeking to catalyze innovative collaborations that draw attention to aspects of the natural world that might otherwise go unnoticed. This area of art/sci thinks about the role of science in society\, how we can all get involved\, what stories we tell\, and how to actively integrate social reflection and critical awareness. \n\n\n\nNATURE Lab Coordinator\, Kathy High\, will lead this new initiative. This program promotes artists whose work focuses not just on art and science\, but also on some aspect of the political moment we are in\, acknowledging racial and environmental justice issues. Our focus this summer will be on Troy water quality. \n\n\n\nOn July 12 we will host a public workshop lead by artist Isidora Fernandez using the facilities at NATURE Lab to further understand the injustices of the legacy of urban industrial pollutants such as lead and microplastics.

SUMMARY:Youth Radio Workshop\, Pt.1
DESCRIPTION:When young people get behind the mic\, we are offered fresh perspectives on the world around us. In this workshop\, youth will be guided on creating radio content from idea conception\, question development\, and recording strategies in part one to editing of recording\, header and footer narration\, and preparation for broadcast in part two. Participants will hear their story broadcast on Sanctuary Radio’s Hudson Mohawk Magazine.   \n\n\n\nYouth Sanctuary and Hudson Mohawk Magazine are coming together to offer this two-part workshop for young journalists at a time when media literacy is more important than ever. This workshop will foster a young person’s visions and encourage critical thinking. Participating youth should come with an adult who will support the young person where needed and help to get a recording before part two. No experience is required- we have volunteers to assist. \n\n\n\nPart 1 (July 8): Idea Development & Interview TrainingPart 2 (July 29): Editing Story & Station IDs \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\nPart 1: – Review the basics of journalism such as objectivity\, etc.– Work on creating a story concept and planning to reach out to potential interviewees.– Practice interviewing and how to record conversations.– Create a plan to record interviews over the next three weeks. \n\n\n\nIdeas for radio stories:– Visit an aquarium\, a park\, or an event and report on the experience. Maybe ask an employee questoins for some additional context.– Get an interview with someone who interests you. This could be someone in your dream career\, a family member\, or someone who impacts your life.– Think about the things that interest you. How can this become a story? Let’s brainstorm during this workshop! \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThis workshop is modeled off of the work that our two youngest producers have done to create radio content with support of a parent. You can also find them fronted by Albany’s own JB!! aka Dirty Moses and singer Dali Soto. Their efforts combined help create a funk/rap show that brings the house down. In January 2019 they released their first album\, ‘Astrobeat’ – now available on vinyl and all streaming platforms! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUnd3rstanding is a three-man Hip-Hop group from Upstate New York featuring Sev Statik\, SES Vth\, and Knowle’ge. Individually\, these artists stand as giants in the realm of underground hip-hop\, but collectively\, they form a powerful group with a mission to entertain\, enlighten and embody what it means to be an emcee. The name Und3rstanding alludes to supreme mathematics and the principles of knowledge\, wisdom\, and understanding – a set of teachings that each of the members have learned from and hold dearly.Founded in 2015\, the members of Und3rstanding had quickly become fans of each other and after performing at several events in the Albany area.  It was Sev Statik who tossed out the idea that they should combine talents and “form like Voltron” into a super lyrical squadron.  Knowle’ge and SES Vth agreed\, and from there they began recruiting the soulful boom-bappington master producer himself\, Deborah’s Son\, to produce their project. SUMMARY:Medicine Garden: Earth Burial
DESCRIPTION:This will be the first event in a series related to the establishment and growth of a Medicine Garden in the NATURE Lab yard at the Sanctuary. Lead by artist Azuré Keahi\, we will be burying hand-sculpted ollas (clay watering vessels) and planting some of the medicines. \n\n\n\nThis living sculpture will feature four powerful plant allies growing among functional sculptural elements\, including slow-release watering vessels (ollas) and cut metal way-finding sign posts. With a focus on Stockbridge-Munsee Mohican medicinal traditions\, the included plants–catmint/Askaskwaamek\, joe-pye weed/Pkuwiimakw\, yarrow/Wtakiipakw\, and bee balm/Wteehaskwal–also have intertribal and cross-cultural resonance. The sculpture’s quadrant design\, with four growing beds arranged in a circle ringed by ollas\, provides a focal point for a series of plant and land-centric gatherings that honor Indigenous pasts and presents on this land as we dream and build towards Indigenous futures. This project is part of the Sanctuary’s growing Eco-Art Trail\, supported by an NEA Our Town Grant in collaboration with the Stockbridge-Munsee Community Band of Mohican Indians.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis project is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Arts Program\, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of The Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by The Arts Center of the Capital Region. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEarth Burial Performance and Workshop

SUMMARY:Healing Herbal Balms at Collard City Growers with Flying Deer Nature Center
DESCRIPTION:When: Garden Open Hours\, 3:30-5:30 Friday May 26th (balm-making from 4:00-5:00)\, Where: 3337 6th Avenue \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for our regular family-oriented garden hours with a special guest! Emma Parrish Post of Flying Deer Nature Center will lead us in a balm-making activity from herbs growing in the garden.
