SUMMARY:DIY Air Purifier Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Air Justice Lab and Clean Air Capital Region are hosting a workshop to build a Corsi-Rosenthal Box (DIY air purifier) while discussing air quality issues and the intersections of environmental\, health\, and disability justice.  \n\n\n\nUnhealthy air quality got you down? Want to slow the spread of viruses over the holidays? Join us to build a Corsi-Rosenthal box! We will supply building materials and guide you through the construction. Come solo or bring a friend! \n\n\n\nAt this workshop\, we will work together to build DIY air purifiers using a box fan\, a furnace filter\, and cardboard! We will be able to supply free materials for up to 12 builds. Items will be supplied in order of first registered for the event. \n\n\n\nRegistration for this limited event is FULL.High quality masks/respirators (such as N95s) will be required and provided for all attendees. \n\n\n\nClean Air Capital Region is a mutual aid project that is hosted by the Sanctuary for Independent Media. Donations will support the Sanctuary so they can continue to offer community events like this one. \n\n\n\nAccess info:\n\n\n\n\nThe Sanctuary and upstairs bathroom are wheelchair accessible. There is a ramp at the entrance of the Sanctuary.\n\n\n\nPlease do not wear any fragrances. We will not use aerosols in the space before the event.\n\n\n\nRapid antigen testing for COVID-19 is required on day-of event for all attendees. If you need a free rapid test\, please show up to the event 20 minutes early (1:40pm) and we will supply you with a test.\n\n\n\nAll participants are required to wear a high-quality respirator (minimum KN95\, N95 preferred) throughout the entire workshop. If a participant needs to unmask\, please go outside\, and maintain at least 10 feet from any other workshop participants.

He has written extensively about freedom\, democracy and education\, the cultural contexts of school\, and teaching as an intellectual\, ethical and political enterprise. His new book\, When Freedom is the Question\, Abolition is the Answer: Reflections on Collective Liberation\, shares reflections that incorporate history\, political theory\, literature\, and his own personal experience within social movements. They come together to offer a radical vision for a more just and equitable world. \n\n\n\nThe book asks these essential questions: What is freedom? How do we get free? His new book shares his own history\, political theory and literature to offer an antiracist radical vision for a just and equitable world. “Freedom is large\, generous\, and generative—and it’s free for all.” \n\n\n\n\n\nBarbara Smith\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBarbara Smith and her colleagues in the Combahee River Collective are credited with originating in 1977 the term “identity politics\,” defining it as an inclusive political analysis for contesting the intersectional oppressions of race\, gender\, class and sexuality. Barbara’s work has been a source of guidance and inspiration to people and movements committed to battling for freedom. In 1980 she co-founded Albany-based Kitchen Table: Women of Color Press\, the first U.S. publisher of books for women of color and has led freedom struggles ever since.

SUMMARY:Community Overdose Response Training
DESCRIPTION:The Alliance for Positive Health‘s Community Overdose Response Training teaches participants the impact of opioid overdoses in New York State\, the signs and symptoms of an opioid overdose\, and how to respond. This workshop is preceded by an Cultural Humility Training at 1pm. \n\n\n\nAn opioid overdose emergency can happen anywhere\, at any time. This training will help empower participants to respond\, and potentially reverse\, an opioid overdose emergency. Following this training\, all participants are provided with a free overdose response kit\, which includes two doses of naloxone/Narcan (the medication that reverses opioid overdoses). \n\n\n\nAbout the Alliance for Positive Health: Serving 15 counties in New York State\, the Alliance for Positive Health is a leader in testing and care coordination services for those living with or at risk of contracting HIV. Our responsibility is to empower and support those impacted by sexually transmitted diseases\, substance use and substance use disorder\, and associated health and mental health challenges. Through our 9+ service programs\, we are able to support individuals with housing\, nutrition\, medical care coordination\, harm reduction\, and more.  \n\n\n\nAbout Sophie (class leader): Sophie (she/they) is the Capital Region Opioid Overdose Prevention Program Coordinator at the Alliance for Positive Health. With a background in neuroscience and chemistry\, Sophie brings the most up-to-date research on substance use to life through interactive presentations and judgement-free education. SUMMARY:Cultural Humility Training
DESCRIPTION:The Alliance for Positive Health‘s Cultural Humility Training is a judgement-free\, educational workshop investigating the best practices for interacting with and engaging with people who use drugs. This training will be followed by an Community Overdose Response Training at 2pm. \n\n\n\nDuring this 60-minute workshop\, we discuss how drugs work in the brain\, why people use substances\, and how to use accurate and stigma-free language to talk about substance use. We also investigate stigma that exists around substance use\, the harm that stigma causes\, and how to best work against systemic\, institutional\, and individual stigma. SUMMARY:"Farming While Black" Screening & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of the feature-length documentary film Farming While Black followed by a panel discussion which will include local Black farmers and gardeners\, moderated by Leah Penniman of Soul Fire Farm. Complimentary light refreshments will be served featuring Soul Fire Farm’s harvest and provided by Rumah Kitchen. The screening will be preceded by a Be The Media! workshop with the film’s director\, Mark Decena from 5-6pm. \n\n\n\n\nLeah Penniman\, co-founder of Soul Fire Farm\, reflects on the plight of Black farmers in the United States. From the height of Black-owned farms at 14% in 1910 to less than 2% today. Leah and her Soul Fire Farm cohorts help propel a rising generation finding strength in the deep historical knowledge of African agrarianism – and its potential to save the planet. \n\n\n\n\nThis event is co-curated by Kathy High and Branda Miller\, and is a collaboration with the RPI’s iEAR Presents series\, supported by the Department of Arts and the School of Humanities\, Arts\, and Social Sciences\, and is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFarming While Black is a feature-length documentary film which examines the historical plight of Black farmers in the United States and the rising generation reclaiming their rightful ownership to land and reconnecting with their ancestral roots. \n\n\n\nAs the co-founder of Soul Fire Farm in upstate New York\, Leah Penniman finds strength in the deep historical knowledge of African agrarianism – agricultural practices that can heal people and the planet. Influenced and inspired by Karen Washington\, a pioneer in urban community gardens in New York City\, and fellow farmer and organizer Blain Snipstal\, Leah galvanizes around farming as the basis of revolutionary justice. \n\n\n\nIn 1910\, Black farmers owned 14 percent of all American farmland. Over the intervening decades\, that number fell below two percent\, the result of racism\, discrimination\, and dispossession. The film chronicles Penniman and two other Black farmers’ efforts to reclaim their agricultural heritage. SUMMARY:Be The Media! workshop: Regenerative Filmmaking– Is it possible?
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Be The Media! workshop with the director of Farming While Black\, Mark Decena of Kontent Films. Using inspiration from film clips relating to resilience Decena will discuss the concept of sustainability and methods of regenerative actions as related to filmmaking\, but also as a self-preservation concept. Decena will address the highs and lows of activist filmmaking\, being overstretched some days/months waiting on projects others\, as well as being overwhelmed when things hit all at once\, and dealing with the grind of fundraising. He will think with participants various ways to keep moving forward even when things look bleak\, embracing regenerative and sustainable practices in farming as translated to filmmaking – or rather\, “how to be a regenerative filmmaker” in harmony with the planet and each other. \n\n\n\nStay after the workshop for the Screening of Farming While Black followed by a panel discussion\, beginning at 7pm. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMark Decena: Founder of Kontent Films\, Director – Raised by an immigrant single mother\, Mark spent his formative years softening hard adobe clay soil with compost. Besides keeping him in line\, it infused Decena with a love of growing things – to date: feature films\, television shows\, and short film series. \n\n\n\nA three time Sundance alumni\, Mark’s first feature\, Dopamine won the Alfred P. Sloan Prize. Decena’s documentary work spans across themes of social justice\, sustainable design and the environment. He wrote and directed the Redford Center film\, Watershed\, and was a writer and producer on Stand Up Planet\, a Gates funded project that aired on Participant Media’s channel\, Pivot and KCET. His latest feature film\, Not Without Us\, premiered as the closing night film at the S.F. Green Film Festival and aired nationally on PBS. Decena’s latest short films\, Remothering the Land\, co-produced with Patagonia Films\, premiered at the DC Environmental Film Festival\, and Me & My Robot premiered at COPDOX and aired on PBS. SUMMARY:PHS Community Acupuncture
DESCRIPTION:PHS is excited to begin hosting regular Community Acupuncture on most Friday afternoons in the fall.  Community acupuncture is a grassroots technique developed to offer the healing benefits of acupuncture at an accessible cost as well as coupled with the benefit of healing in community.  Folks can sign up ahead of time or walk in!   \n\n\n\nSessions are spaced every 15 mins and usually last about an hour. Please only register if you are sure you can make it\, holding spots doesn’t allow others to sign up. Contact fxcoughlin@gmail.com to if you need to cancel. \n\n\n\n\nRegister for Community Acupuncture \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYou will be seated in a cozy lounge chair\, in a large semi-circle with up to 4 other people.\n\n\n\nThe acupuncturist will ask a few simple questions about your health\, then place appropriate needles in your arms\, legs and ear.  People find it quite relaxing and often take a nap!\n\n\n\nAcupuncture is a subtle healing energy and best works with 3-4 visits over the space of one to two months.\n\n\n\nPlease wear comfy clothes that can easily be pulled above your elbows and knees. If you often get cold\, please bring a blanket. And drink plenty of water.\n\n\n\nWe are asking for sliding scale donations to make these sessions sustainable. Please plan to donate between $20-40 per session\, these go to cover costs\, provide a stipend for the acupuncture team\, and take care of the space. If you are able to donate more\, it will help cover costs for someone else. If you are unable to donate\, please come for healing regardless\, no one will be turned away. Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners believe the human body has more than 2\,000 acupuncture points connected by pathways or meridians. These pathways create an energy flow (Qi\, pronounced “chee”) through the body that is responsible for overall health. Disruption of the energy flow can cause disease. By applying acupuncture to certain points\, it is thought to improve the flow of Qi\, thereby improving health. Read more \n\n\n\nMore about community acupuncture\n\n\n\nCommunity acupuncture is a grassroots model designed to increase access to acupuncture. It is done in a group setting\, mainly using points mainly in your hands\, feet\, and ears.  In the US\, specifically at the Lincoln Hospital Detox Program in the Bronx\, the practice was brought over in the 70’s from China by Black Panther and Young Lord activists.  It has been refined and spread through the work of the Peoples Organization of Community Acupuncture (POCA).

SUMMARY:PlaceKnowing and Ruderal Ecologies
DESCRIPTION:Join us and guests Dr. Ted Jojola and Kahstoserakwathe Paulette Moore for a presentation and conversation to discuss how place-knowing concepts connect with land restoration concerns in current-day North Central Troy\, informed by a series of case studies with Indigenous communities\, and having walked the Sanctuary campus with local land stewards. They will talk about how changemakers can engage Indigenous planning methods as they remediate contaminated and neglected land and make way for healthy communities.  \n\n\n\n\n\nGuests Dr. Ted Jojola and Kahstoserakwathe Paulette Moore will share insights from their recently completed PlaceKnowing podcast series\, connecting them to the Sanctuary’s ongoing investigation into caring for urban lands shaped by stress informed by our two Ruderal Ecologies convenings (2018\, 2021). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Place-knowing” (rather than “place-making”) acknowledges that a place may already be made. One must “walk the land” to learn about it and about the world-views of the communities that inhabit it. Place-knowing as a framework in the context of brownfield remediation on Indigenous lands is explored in depth on the PlaceKnowing podcast. Hosted by Dr. Ted Jojola\, the series supports “social changemakers to engage Indigenous planning methods as they remediate contaminated and neglected land and make way for healthy communities.” Kahstoserakwathe Paulette Moore’s approach to media-making is explored in a Hudson Mohawk Magazine interview: Indigenous Media-Making: Land\, Language\, Relationship. \n\n\n\n“Ruderal\,” from the Latin rudus (rubble)\, refers to plant species that are first to repopulate disturbed habitats. “Ruderal ecologies” are formed by hardy\, adaptive communities of human and more-than-human life who begin the healing process in the wake of damaging processes like colonization\, urbanization\, and industrialization.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresenters\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKahstoserakwathe Paulette Moore is an independent filmmaker\, podcaster\, and educator. Moore is Kanyen’kehà:ka (Mohawk) and an enrolled member of Six Nations of the Grand River territory where she is based. She is a founding member and co-owner of The Aunties Dandelion (TAD): a media organization informed by traditional Onkwehon:we (Indigenous) teachings and focused on revitalizing communities through stories of land\, language\, and relationships. TAD recently completed their short film titled VESS\, featuring Mi’kmaq actor Glen Gould and Six Nations community members. The film is about love\, listening and returning to the Rez. \n\n\n\nTAD projects include The Aunties Dandelion’s monthly podcast which in its third year. Moore completed a trilogy of films with Free Speech TV about the 2016/17 Standing Rock water protection actions and from 2017 – 2019 was an affiliated professor of Indigenous media and philosophy at Northland College in Ashland\, Wisconsin. \n\n\n\nHudson Mohawk Magazine · Storytelling About PlaceKnowing\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheodore (Ted) Jojola\, PhD\, is a Distinguished Professor and Regents’ Professor Emeritus in the Community & Regional Planning Program\, School of Architecture + Planning\, University of New Mexico (UNM). He holds a PhD in Political Science from University of Hawaii at Manoa where he attended the EastWest Center. He has a Masters in City Planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology\, and a BFA in Architecture from the UNM.  \n\n\n\nHe is an enrolled tribal member of the Pueblo of Isleta. From 2008-2010\, he was Visiting Distinguished Professor at Arizona State University where he was a member of the faculty of the School Geographic Sciences and Planning. He was Director of Native American Studies at UNM from 1980-1996\, and established the interdisciplinary undergraduate degree program in Native Studies. He is the founder of the Indigenous Design + Planning Institute and a cofounder of the Indigenous Planning Division of the American Planning Association. He is President of a non-profit foundation\, The Society for the Preservation of American Indian Culture\, as well as board member of other foundations including the Chamiza Foundation\, Tricklock Theatre Company\, and the BataanCorregidor Foundation of New Mexico.  \n\n\n\nHudson Mohawk Magazine · Supporting Communities Rather than Extracting from Them Benefits All\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRespondents\n\n\n\nThese invited guests have unique perspectives on connecting with land in North Central Troy. \n\n\n\nA’Livija Mullins-Richard\, affectionately known as Livi or Olive\, is the new kid on the block at the Sanctuary for Independent Media. Her multifaceted roles as the Air Justice Lab (AJL) Project Lead at NATURE Lab and Outreach and Volunteer Coordinator for The Sanctuary reflect her dedication to fostering collective action and  filling data gaps in underserved communities. A first-generation college graduate\, she holds a B.A. in Environmental Studies with a concentration in Environmental Justice from Siena College.  As the Outreach & Volunteer Coordinator\, she is determined to forge stronger connections with organizations\, schools\, and individuals throughout Troy. Through her work with AJL\, a community air monitoring initiative\, A’Livija aims to gather data that validates the lived experiences of individuals residing in sacrifice zones\, commonly known as environmentally unjust areas. By collecting this data\, she seeks to cultivate awareness and encourage participatory action concerning air quality issues.  In addition to her primary roles\, A’Livija is involved in various projects at The Sanctuary\, including tending to the Collard City Garden and contributing to radio production via Hudson Mohawk Magazine. A’Livija’s areas of focus include racial health disparities\, urban ecology\, cartography\, and New York State History. Her unwavering dedication is focused on cultivating a culture of care in spaces where complacency often prevails. She firmly believes that this transformative journey begins with her—and with you. \n\n\n\nAzuré Iversen-Keahi is a mixed Kanaka ‘Ōiwi\, mother\, grower\, writer\, and administrator based on Mohican soils of Upstate New York. Transitioning from the landscape of the Koʻolau Mountains to the Hudson Valley of the Northeast\, she began to explore earthwork as healing for herself and the surrounding community centering her commitment to food sovereignty and intersectional justice. Her stories of diaspora\, ʻāina-based healing and ancestral reunion have been published in The Greenhorns’: New Farmer’s Almanac\, Tropic Magazine\, GRIST\, Atmos and The Daily Yonder. Having managed a food business in NYC\, farmer’s markets for Denison Farm\, holding worker-ownership at Capital Bookkeeping Cooperative\, and having served as the Business Manager of Soul Fire Farm\, she weaves indigenous ways of knowing into the design of administrative systems that cultivate care and support for teams centering collective liberation. \n\n\n\ndamaris miller (they / them) is a community organizer\, facilitator\, and grower committed to creating spaces of rest\, discovery\, and connection for Black\, Indigenous and other People of Color\, queer and trans folks\, and activists. They have been creating & curating transformative spaces for over 10 years through practices of breath\, Buddhist-based meditation\, Ancestral Wisdom and Earth reverence. Damaris has over 10 years of experience working for and with nonprofits in the spheres of environmental action\, food justice\, healing justice and abolition. This experience includes (though is not limited to) working with WE ACT For Environmental Justice\, Khoryug Environmental Network\, Soul Fire Farm and Troy 4 Black Lives. In their work to unpack the nonprofit industrial complex\, they created Rested Root’s framework to “T.R.A.N.S.F.O.R.M. the NPIC.” As a Queer and Trans survivor\, they strive to live into personal healing as a practice of communal liberation and community healing as the root of personal liberation. Damaris has a B.A. in Anthropology and Environmental Studies from Princeton University.  \n\n\n\nEllie Irons (she/her) is an artist and educator living and working on Mohican land in current-day Troy\, New York\, USA. From foraged watercolor paintings to un-lawning experiments\, her work combines socially engaged art\, ecology fieldwork\, and embodied learning. She is a co-founder of the Next Epoch Seed Library and the Environmental Performance Agency\, collaborations investigating relationships between humans and spontaneous urban plants (aka weeds). Ellie received a BA from Scripps College in Los Angeles and an MFA from Hunter College in New York. In December 2021\, She completed a PhD in arts practice at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute\, focused on socially engaged environmental art. She is currently a community science educator and lab manager at the Sanctuary for Independent Media’s NATURE Lab. One iteration of her ongoing Lawn (Re)Disturbance Laboratory project enlivens a lawn south of Collard City growers on the Sanctuary campus. \n\n\n\nKathy High is an artist / educator who collaborates with scientists and others\, and considers living systems\, animal sentience\, and ethical dilemmas of biotechnology and medical industries. High is Professor of Video and New Media in the Arts department at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She is NATURE Lab coordinator at the Sanctuary for Independent Media. \n\n\n\nMargaretha Haughwout  works with humans\, and the more-than-human\, across technologies and ecologies\, to cultivate a radical imagination that challenges proprietary regimes\, colonial temporalities\, and capitalist forms of labor. Her work manifests as speculative fabulation\, intervention\, participatory event\, walking tour\, experimental pedagogy\, installation\, and biological processes. Haughwout’s active collaborations include the Coven Intelligence Program\, with efrén cruz cortés\, the Guerrilla Grafters\, and Ruderal Witchcraft with Oliver Kellhammer. She created and maintains the Food Forest Studio in Central New York\, and is working with the Sanctuary to create the living installation De-Fence.  \n\n\n\nWanonah Spencer is an Indigenous youth advocate visiting her Mohican homelands from current-day Wisconsin. She is Stockbridge-Munsee Mohican and Oneida. She received the Alliance for a Viable Future’s first ever Mohican Ancestral Healing Fellowship to deepen her relationship with her homelands and The Berkshires. In 2023 she visited the Sanctuary with her daughter Gracie who participated in Water Justice Lab. Wanonah’s long-term plan is to establish a sister organization dedicated to cultural revitalization and climate education on her reservation in Wisconsin.

You can join for the whole session\, or drop in to just one or two! These classes are a great way for parents and kids to move and sing and play together. DESCRIPTION:Due to potential thunderstorms\, this event is being moved inside to our main space\, at 3361 6th Avenue! \n\n\n\nHi kids\, hi families! Did you decorate a flower pot at Freedom Fest? Whether you did or not\, we invite you to join us in celebrating Make Music Day during our open garden hours! Join in music-making\, then enjoy the garden. \n\n\n\nMiss Deb\, who offers Music Together at People’s Health Sanctuary\, will lead Flowerpot Music! Bring your flowerpot and play along in the garden! Everyone can come and play their flowerpot in the garden (limited amount of flowerpots will be available on-site)\, no experience necessary! Vic Firth Mallets will be provided to all participants courtesy of Troy Savings Bank Music Hall and the Make Music Alliance.
