DESCRIPTION:Robot Workshop with FSD.Temp\n\n\n\nFor this follow up to the MYOB (Make Your Own Brick) workshop\, bring a brick or just watch and chat as a low-cost\, low-impact robot places bricks to create a wall and planter in the NATURE Lab yard.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBricks have shaped the industrial and visual language of Troy for centuries\, while advances in technology and manufacturing are shaping questions about our collective future. In part 2 of our brick series\, participants are invited to bring their own bricks to the NATURElab yard\, where a low-cost\, low-impact robot will use them to build a wall and planter. This event is an invitation to witness\, discuss\, and participate in the robot’s “work”.  The robot was built by FSD.TEMP\, a temporary creative group exploring the accessibility of complex and expensive technologies through experimentation\, hyper-local materials\, and community collaboration.   \n\n\n\nThis is the second of two events from FSD.TEMP hosted by the NATURE lab\, made possible by the Capital Region Arts Thrive & Grow grant.  Arts Thrive & Grow is funded by New York State & the New York State Council on the Arts\, with support from Governor Kathy Hochul\, Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart Cousins\, and local elected officials\, including Senators Jake Ashby and Patricia Fahy and Assemblymembers Scott H. Bendett\, John T. Her work centers on the fabrication of architectural-scale\, multi-media interventions. She is a lecturer at the RPI School of Architecture.  \n\n\n\nDierdre Shea is a multidisciplinary object-designer investigating meaningful ecosystems in product and manufacturing through sustainable materials\, creative experimentation and novel technology. She is a founding industrial designer at Fun Stuff Design. \n\n\n\nRiley Studebaker is a lecturer at the RPI School of Architecture where he focuses on robotic labor embedded in the built environment.

This is a collaboration with the Coalition for Civil Freedoms. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n7pm: The Forever War; The War on Terror\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBarry Rubinow Is the director of “Tarik Shah: Don’t Play Like Them.” Rubinow’s career as a producer\, director\, editor\, and indie filmmaker includes an Emmy Award for editing the CBS science show\, Beakman’s World\, and an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Short Subject for the first documentary he edited\, “Red Grooms: Sunflower in a Hothouse.” He was also a founding member of The Documentary Channel. His latest film\, “Tarik Shah: Don’t Play Like Them\,” won Best Documentary at the 2025 Albany Film Festival. \n\n\n\nPatrick Cone founded his production company\, C1 Entertainment\, to give voice to those who might not otherwise be heard. That guiding principle has led him to explore stories across America and the world. His 2021 short\, South\, garnered an official selection at Slamdance and the Audience Award for Best Documentary Short at the Hot Springs Film Festival. He is currently producing a feature documentary on the life of a civil rights activist.

The event will conclude with a musical performance with Tarik Shah on bass accompanied by guitarist by Luke Franco. This is a collaboration with the Coalition for Civil Freedoms. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n5pm: Be The Media! workshop with Barry Rubinow\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocally-based jazz musician Tarik Shah is one of the many victims of “the war on terror.” “Tarik Shah: Don’t Play Like Them\,” a documentary film by Barry Rubinow\, takes the viewer through Tarik’s release and subsequent jobs\, gigs\, past career highlights\, his imprisonment\, life events\, and difficulties in getting back into the ever-changing jazz scene in New York City. This short film (37 minutes) will be followed by a panel discussion which will include Tarik Shah\, Barry Rubinow\, and Kathy Manley and Jeanne Finley on behalf of Coalition for Freedoms. This event looks at the lasting impact on the lives of political prisoners. \n\n\n\nPanelists: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTarik Shah\, Locally-based jazz musician who was incarcerated for almost 15 years on terrorist accusations\, and the subject of “Tarik Shah: Don’t Play Like Them.” Shah’s musical journey began in earnest at the age of 16\, when he became the sole bass student of internationally acclaimed bassist Slam Stewart. By age 21\, Shah was touring the world with legendary vocalist Betty Carter. From there\, he has performed and recorded with a stunning array of Jazz legends\, including Ahmad Jamal\, Randy Weston\, Abbey Lincoln\, Pharoah Sanders\, the Duke Ellington Orchestra\, Dr. Lonnie Smith and so many more. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKathy Manley is the Legal Director of the Coalition for Civil Freedoms and the Vice-President of the Capital Region Council of the New York Civil Liberties Union. She is also a founding member of Project SALAM. Her main emphasis is criminal defense and constitutional rights. With colleagues\, she now advocates for prisoners through Coalition for Civil Freedom. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe Coalition for Civil Freedoms (CCF) is a survivor-led nonprofit organization dedicated to ending the abuses of the U.S. domestic “War on Terror.” Founded in 2010\, CCF is a coalition of civil liberties and human rights organizations that challenges preemptive prosecution and the post-9/11 targeting\, surveillance\, and criminalization of Muslim communities. CCF’s core areas of work include education and outreach\, prisoner and family support.

The workshop opens with a session on film practice\, after which Suneil Sanzgiri and Bhawin Suchak of Youth FX reflect on the practical work of filmmaking and consider its impact on the histories and communities it engages. Sanzgiri’s recent work serves as a departure point with focus on challenges facing emerging filmmakers. The workshop is followed by a dinner for participants\, and a concluding screening of works from Sanzgiri’s series Golden Jubilee. \n\n\n\nEMPAC series: An Impossible Address\, Suneil Sanzgiri\n\n\n\nSuneil Sanzgiri is an artist\, researcher\, and filmmaker. Spanning experimental video and film\,animations\, essays\, and installations\, his work contends with questions of identity\, heritage\,culture\, and diaspora in relation to structural violence and anticolonial struggles across theGlobal South. Sanzgiri’s films offer sonic and visual journeys through family history\, localmythology\, and colonial legacies of extraction in Goa\, India—where his family originates—deftlyutilizing and vividly blending together 3D renderings\, drone videography\, photogrammetry andlidar scanning\, 16 mm film and animation\, archival footage\, and desktop documentary practices. \n\n\n\nBhawin Suchak is an educator\, filmmaker\, and the co-founder and co-executive director of Youth FX\, a nationally renowned media arts organization focused on empowering young people by teaching creative and technical skills in film and digital media.  He is also co-director of NeXt Doc\, a year-round fellowship program of Youth FX that exists to amplify the voices of emerging documentary filmmakers of color.  Bhawin is the director\, cinematographer and editor of Outta The Muck (2022)\, a feature length documentary supported by Sundance Institute\, ITVS\, Just Films\, Black Public Media and Southern Documentary Fund which aired on PBS’ Independent Lens series in 2023.  He also previously directed The Throwaways (2014) and Free To Learn (2004).  Bhawin is a 2019 Just Films Rockwood Fellow\, 2019 Sundance Documentary Film Program Fellow\, and a member of A-Doc: Asian American Documentary Network and the Documentary Accountability Working Group.

This event is co-sponsored by Riverkeeper\, Beyond Plastics. and iEar Presents. \n\n\n\n4:30-7pm Water Justice Lab End of Season Celebration\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPanelists:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNicole Chochrek holds an MFA from the University at Buffalo and a Bachelor of Arts in Geography and Environmental Science from the University of North Texas. As an interdisciplinary artist\, she has exhibited nationally and internationally\, from Al Shaheed Park in Kuwait (2016) to El Museo Gallery in Buffalo\, New York (2022). She created Broken Plastics\, an arts and education initiative that has launched Microplastic Recycling Art Bins across New York state and beyond. Photo by Pat Cray. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHeather Davis is associate professor of Culture and Media at Eugene Lang College\, The New School. As an interdisciplinary scholar working in environmental humanities\, media studies\, and visual culture\, she is interested in how fossil fuels have shaped contemporary culture. Her most recent book\, Plastic Matter (Duke University Press\, 2022)\, explores the transformation of geology\, media\, and bodies in light of plastic’s saturation. Davis is an active member of the Synthetic Collective\, an interdisciplinary team of scientists\, humanities scholars\, and artists\, who investigate and make visible plastic pollution in the Great Lakes. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIleya Du Boulay served as the 2025 Water Justice Lab youth mentor. A 2025 graduate of RPI with a Bachelors of Science in Biology and Arts Minor in Video\, Performance\, and Social Practice\, Ileya is a passionate researcher\, ecologist\, artist\, and multidisciplinary creator. She centers her work in using healing as a modality within scientific discovery. They are a proponent in advancing scientific discovery while maintaining awareness of developing alternative methods that slow down or stop our planet’s degradation.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlexis Goldsmith is the National Organizing Director for Beyond Plastics\, a nonprofit focused on ending plastic pollution. An energetic grassroots organizer\, she previously worked at the Sanctuary\, coordinating the permaculture campus and the Hudson Mohawk Magazine radio program. She has produced hundreds of interviews\, largely on petrochemicals and environmental activism. She co-founded the Hudson Mohawk Environmental Action Network\, a grassroots consortium fighting for environmental justice and Indigenous rights along the Hudson River.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Sarah Cadieux is an Earth and Environmental Sciences professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She takes an interdisciplinary approach to understanding biogeochemical cycling within freshwater systems by combining limnology\, aquatic chemistry\, isotope biogeochemistry\, sedimentology and geomicrobiology. She is researching microplastics contamination in local surface water and drinking water\, including through her Microplastics Watch project at NATURE Lab.

SUMMARY:White Pine Therapy
DESCRIPTION:Lead by Raei Bridges and Azuré Keahi\n\n\n\nJoin Raei Bridges and Azuré Keahi for an exploration of white pine. Participants will learn to make small containers out of white pine bark while learning about other medicinal aspects of this Vitamin C-rich tree. This event will run alongside The People’s Health Sanctuary November Healing Day at the Sanctuary’s main space.  \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhite Pine Therapy is one part of a workshop series called Strands of Regeneration. Started by artists Ellie Irons and Azuré Keahi\, Strands of Regeneration is an eco-socially engaged project rooted in participatory art and creative practice centered on reciprocity\, building connections between humans\, the land and more-than-human life. Hosted on the Sanctuary’s inner city Eco Art Trail\, these workshops offer an opportunity to learn from local artists and makers whose creative practices are intertwined with care for land. Together\, we will weave plant fibers and other strands into art and objects from natural materials as an act of care and reverence for earth\, celebrating how this cycle of care supports our movements. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFacilitator Bio:  \n\n\n\nRaei Bridges (they/them) is the founder of Black&Wild\, an organization dedicated to creating transformative experiences in nature. At the helm\, Raei orchestrates mindful wilderness trips and ancestral skills campouts specifically tailored for Black\, Indigenous\, & People of Color in the Northeast. Their work at Black&Wild is intended to support folks of the global majority to rekindle their wild animal self\, take more time to play\, and find their own personal pathway to attunement with the natural world. Raei’s work de-centers heady intelligence and seeks to uplift intuitive ways of knowing and being in kinship with the natural world. Black&Wild creates space to rest\, recenter\, and remember our wildness.  \n\n\n\n\n\nStrands of Regeneration is supported by the Arts Center of the Capital Region’s Arts Thrive Grow grant program. Arts Thrive and Grow has been funded by New York State\, Kathy Hochul\, Governor. He was trained in Integrative Structural Acupuncture\, which is a form of Japanese Acupuncture. \n\n\n\n\nLearn more and register here\n\n\n\n\nIndividual acupuncture is great for folks with complicated symptoms\, chronic issues\, and structural imbalances. These can include back pain\, chronic headaches\, fatigue\, gynecological issues\, chronic disease\, among many others. \n\n\n\nSessions will last 75 mins and occur in our private consult room. It is located at the PHS space\, at 3319 6th Ave Troy\, NY on the 2nd floor. The building has blue siding with a green door. \n\n\n\nI will palpate multiple spots on your head\, chest\, abdomen\, arms and legs. This palpation allows us to find appropriate acupuncture points. Extremely thin needles will be placed throughout your body to allow healing to occur. People feel incredibly relaxed and usually fall asleep! \n\n\n\nAcupuncture is a subtle healing energy and best works with 3-4 visits over the space of one to two months. \n\n\n\nPlease wear comfy clothes that can easily be pulled above your elbows and knees. If you often get cold\, please bring a blanket. And drink plenty of water. \n\n\n\nWe are asking for sliding scale donations to make these sessions sustainable. If you are able to donate\, please consider donating between $40-100 per session. These go to cover costs\, provide a stipend for the acupuncture team\, and contribute to the space. If you are able to donate more\, it will help cover costs for someone else or go to support the space! If you are unable to donate\, please come for healing regardless\, no one will be turned away.
