DESCRIPTION:PHS is excited to begin hosting individual acupuncture again! Acupuncture is offered by Xavier Coughlin\, a NYS certified physician-acupuncturist. He was trained in Integrative Structural Acupuncture\, which is a form of Japanese Acupuncture. \n\n\n\n\nLearn more and register here\n\n\n\n\nIndividual acupuncture is great for folks with complicated symptoms\, chronic issues\, and structural imbalances. These can include back pain\, chronic headaches\, fatigue\, gynecological issues\, chronic disease\, among many others. \n\n\n\nSessions will last 75 mins and occur in our private consult room. It is located at the PHS space\, at 3319 6th Ave Troy\, NY on the 2nd floor. The building has blue siding with a green door. \n\n\n\nI will palpate multiple spots on your head\, chest\, abdomen\, arms and legs. This palpation allows us to find appropriate acupuncture points. Extremely thin needles will be placed throughout your body to allow healing to occur. People feel incredibly relaxed and usually fall asleep! \n\n\n\nAcupuncture is a subtle healing energy and best works with 3-4 visits over the space of one to two months. \n\n\n\nPlease wear comfy clothes that can easily be pulled above your elbows and knees. If you often get cold\, please bring a blanket. And drink plenty of water. \n\n\n\nWe are asking for sliding scale donations to make these sessions sustainable. If you are able to donate\, please consider donating between $40-100 per session. These go to cover costs\, provide a stipend for the acupuncture team\, and contribute to the space. If you are able to donate more\, it will help cover costs for someone else or go to support the space! If you are unable to donate\, please come for healing regardless\, no one will be turned away. SUMMARY:To Bind Anew: Creative tools for grief\, memory\, and mending
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, participants will gently explore memories through creative practices as a way to navigate grief and loss with the guidance of Sarah Blesener and Jenny Stratton\, both artists and educators. To bind anew: this is an act of love.  \n\n\n\nLimited spots available. Registration with a $10 refundable deposit is required to hold your place. Donations recommended on a sliding scale of $0 – 30; no one will be turned away for lack of funds.* \n\n\n\n*Deposit refunds/cancellations: If you are unable to attend and notify us at least 48 hours before the event begins\, we will offer your spot to someone on the waiting list and refund your deposit. Notify irons@mediasanctuary to cancel. If you attend the event\, we will offer your $10 deposit back in cash on the day of the event. If the workshop is cancelled\, we will refund your deposit or offer you the opportunity to attend a rescheduled event. \n\n\n\nThis workshop is for anyone navigating grief and loss—whether personally\, or as a caregiver or services provider supporting others. Together\, we’ll gently explore personal and shared memories through creative practices such as storytelling\, collage\, poetry\, and working with meaningful objects: photographs\, heirlooms\, flowers\, and more. \n\n\n\nAs we step into the new year\, we’ll co-create a space to reflect\, mourn\, and honor what we carry. Participants will be invited to contribute to a collective archive of our experience\, holding both what has been lost and what still remains. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNote to participants: Please come prepared with around 3 to 6 printed image reproductions of archival photographs or images meaningful to you to work with. All colors\, shapes\, and sizes are welcome. These may include images of loved ones you are grieving\, family albums\, vacation photos\, or visuals from communal archives or media. Please do not bring originals. \n\n\n\nWe recommend printing your photographs at a nearby drugstore such as Walgreens\, CVS\, etc-orders can be placed online or instore. (prints are typically under 1.00 each for a 4×6)  \n\n\n\nWe also encourage you to bring additional archival materials such as letters\, journals\, notes\, memorabilia\, or scraps—anything that holds meaning for you. Provided materials include paint\, tape\, scissors\, pens\, and extra paper. Feel free to bring your own art supplies if you prefer to use them. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSarah Blesener\n\n\n\nSarah Blesener is an educator\, socially engaged artist\, and visual researcher interested in the complexity of human relationships and their visual representations. \n\n\n\n\n\nJenny Stratton\n\n\n\nJenny Stratton is an interdisciplinary artist\, visual researcher and educator. She engages with photography\, art\, and storytelling as emergent processes for co-creation\, restorative narratives\, and acts of care. Jenny’s creative work and research are rooted in relationships—with ourselves and each other\, with inner/outer landscapes and ecologies. She is also a full-spectrum doula care provider.

SUMMARY:Gathering Stories: Black Experiences in the Adirondacks
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a hybrid session to learn about the importance of the Black archive and how you can contribute to the collection for The Black Experience in the Adirondacks\, a 2027 new permanent\, interactive exhibition at the Adirondack Experience\, the Museum on Blue Mountain Lake. Curator Charles Clark III will be at the Sanctuary to present about how your objects help to tell the full story of Black life in the Adirondacks. Join us in person or over zoom\, link will be set out with registration.  \n\n\n\nIn preparation for a landmark exhibition opening in 2027 on The Black Experience in the Adirondacks\, the Adirondack Experience is hosting collecting events around New York State\, including at The Sanctuary for Independent Media on February 18 & 28. The hybrid event on February 18th will be an opportunity to learn about the collection from curator Charles Clark III as well as a drop-off event for folks with physical contributions. February 28th is the event Frederick Douglass and the Power of the Black Archive: A Community Reading of “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July” and Collecting Black Experiences in the Adirondacks.  \n\n\n\nYour objects tell the full story of Black life in the Adirondacks. The Black Experience in the Adirondacks is seeking a wide range of materials\, including photographs\, souvenirs\, letters\, postcards\, recipes\, clothing\, and video clips from the Adirondacks. Any object or memory that holds a piece of the story is a vital piece of this history. Help your story be told by being a part of this upcoming exhibit! \n\n\n\nCan’t make it but have something to contribute? Fill out this online form.  \n\n\n\n\n\nCommemorative Metal:Roland Brown Sr. received the Congressional Gold Medal for his service in WW II. On June 25\, 2011\, Dr. Roland M. Brown\, Jr. donated his father’s medal to the Adirondack Experience.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Closet: In 1957\, a 17 year old Fulton Fryar was the first African-American to sing at the Seagle Music Colony. Today\, the Adirondack Experience exhibits his segregated housing as a historical reminder of racial inequality in the Adirondacks during the 50s.\n\n\n\n\n\nLake George Study: This landscape painting by Takeyce Walter is an example of a style of painting called en plein air. Takeyce’s work is currently on display in the Artists & Inspiration in the Wild exhibit\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCharles Clark III\, curator of The Black Experience in the Adirondacks  Charles employs a Pan-Africanist methodology\, enriched by material cultural approach\, to transform exhibition making in museums. His work addresses ethno cultural erasure and brings to light marginalized narratives within art history. Maybe you’ve purchased seeds in the past\, but didn’t use them all\, and are ready to pass them on? Just curious about seeds? Join us! There’s no need to bring seeds or have any knowledge of seed-keeping to attend–you can also join for company\, conversation\, and learning! We’ll have food to enjoy together\, a kiddo corner\, and various healing modalities available by donation thanks to the People’s Health Sanctuary. We’re also excited to host a table by Soul Fire Farm\, whose seed saving program you can read about below! \n\n\n\nSeed Keeping at Soul Fire Farm\n\n\n\n“At Soul Fire Farm\, we grow dozens of native crops alongside culturally significant crops from African\, Indigenous\, and Palestinian lineages. Joining a global movement of land workers and Indigenous peoples working to defend seed sovereignty against an increasingly monopolized and homogenized seed industry\, we save 8-10 seed varieties annually for distribution through the Truelove Seeds and Ujamaa Seeds catalogues. Winter continues to deepen his love for the trees and relationship with the woods as he tends land at Soul Fire.

DESCRIPTION:This winter and spring\, the People’s Health Sanctuary will continue hosting Healing Days at the Sanctuary main space and other venues in the region. A variety of healing modalities will be on offer\, ranging from community acupuncture and energy work to herbal remedies from the Community Apothecary. You’ll also find a nourishing one pot meal\, and a place to connect. All offerings will be donation based/sliding scale\, so pay whatever you can— and bring a friend! PHS will continue to donate 50% of all Healing Day donations to the Capital Region Sanctuary Coalition (CRSC). SUMMARY:Frederick Douglass and the Power of the Black Archives
DESCRIPTION:A community reading of “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July” and collecting for the Black Experience in the Adirondacks\n\n\n\nJoin us in creating Black history archives in a community reading\, discussion\, and collection. Together we will collectively read Frederick Douglass’ What to the Slave is the Fourth of July before a conversation on storytelling and the importance of recorded Black history\, featuring speakers from the Underground Railroad Education Center and the Adirondack Experience museum. You will also have the opportunity to contribute memorabilia to the soon-to-be permanent exhibition The Black Experience in the Adirondacks at the Adirondack Experience museum. There will be a hybrid event on February 18 to give insight into the collection in Gathering Stories: Black Experiences in the Adirondacks. \n\n\n\n\n\nFrederick Douglass’ legacy demonstrates the importance of archives. Using speeches\, photography\, and print media\, this man who was born into slavery became one of the most important figures in Black history. Douglass gave speaking tours\, was the most photographed man in America during the 19th century\, and wrote books and published The North Star press. We know so much about him and his experience because of his archive\, and participants will leave a legacy of their own with archive opportunities during this event.  \n\n\n\nAttendees will collectively read Frederick Douglass’ abolitionist speech “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July” (which will be recorded and archived in audio and video form followed by a panel discussion which will include the Underground Railroad Education Center as well as Charles Clark III\, the Project Curator for the exhibition The Black Experience in the Adirondacks. The community will then have the opportunity to contribute memorability connected to the Black experience in the Adirondacks to an upcoming exhibition. \n\n\n\n\n\nA portrait of Frederick Douglass created in 1879\n\n\n\n\n\nFeaturing: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLacey Wilson\, Teen Museum Studies Program Manager of Underground Railroad Education CenterLacey was born in Washington DC and has spent 10 years in public history\, leading tours\, managing sites\, and engaging with oral histories and local communities. Today\, she plans and implements a museum studies program for teenagers at the Underground Railroad Education Center in addition to sitting on the advocacy and nominations committees with the National Council of Public History. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPaul & Mary Liz Stewart\, Co-Founders of Underground Railroad Education Center (UREC)UREC is a non-profit organization which grew out of a research project on the Underground Railroad in the Capital Region by Paul and Mary Liz Stewart. Their work uncovered the voices and stories of people written out of this history. Together\, these voices provide a different accounting of Underground Railroad activism and change the American narrative. \n\n\n\n\n\nSince its incorporation in 2003\, Underground Railroad Education Center has created a strong program of education and research that celebrates and preserves the story of the Underground Railroad in Albany and the Capital Region and its relationship with us today. URHPCR has identified the key primary and secondary figures and their activities\, and has developed a general outline of the local history of the movement. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCharles Clark III\, curator of The Black Experience in the Adirondacks  Charles employs a Pan-Africanist methodology\, enriched by material cultural approach\, to transform exhibition making in museums. His work addresses ethno cultural erasure and brings to light marginalized narratives within art history. His approach not only enhances the representation of diverse voices but also redefines the role of museums as spaces for critical dialogue and cultural exploration. \n\n\n\n\n\nIn 2027\, the Adirondack Experience\, the Museum on Blue Mountain Lake\, will open The Black Experience in the Adirondacks\, a new permanent\, interactive exhibition. This exhibition will comprehensively explore the history of Black people in the region\, from their important and well-documented role in the settlement and development of the Adirondacks to current efforts ensuring an inclusive community and enriching the region’s recreational opportunities.

He was awarded the Right Livelihood Award\, sometimes called the alternative Nobel\, in the Swedish Parliament. Foreign Policy named him to its inaugural list of the world’s 100 most important global thinkers. \n\n\n\nMcKibben helped found 350.org\, the first global grassroots climate campaign\, which has organized protests on every continent\, including Antarctica\, for climate action. He played a leading role in launching the opposition to big oil pipeline projects like Keystone XL\, and the fossil fuel divestment campaign\, which has become the biggest anti-corporate campaign in history\, with endowments worth more than $40 trillion stepping back from oil\, gas and coal. He stepped down as board chair of 350 in 2015\, and left the board and stepped down from his volunteer role as senior adviser in 2020\, accepting emeritus status. He lives in the mountains above Lake Champlain with his wife\, the writer Sue Halpern\, where he spends as much time as possible outdoors. In 2014\, biologists credited his career by naming a new species of woodland gnat—Megophthalmidia mckibbeni–in his honor.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a film screening of River of Grass\, a documentary film which is described as “An ode to the Florida Everglades\, told through the prescient writings of Marjory Stoneman Douglas\, and those who today call the region home.” This film screening will be followed by a Q&A\, and the filmmakers will also offer a Be The Media! workshop before the screening at 5pm.  \n\n\n\nThis event is a collaboration with the RPI’s iEAR Presents series\, supported by the Department of Arts and the School of Humanities\, Arts\, and Social Sciences\, and is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here\n\n\n\n\nFilm Synopsis\n\n\n\nRIVER OF GRASS is a present-day reimagining of environmentalist Marjory Stoneman Douglas’s celebrated book\, “The Everglades: River of Grass\,” (1947)\, which forever changed the public’s understanding of the area from worthless swamps to an essential source of freshwater\, enabling the ecosystem to endure\, just barely\, today. In the wake of a hurricane\, Douglas visits filmmaker Sasha Wortzel in a dream\, catalyzing a prismatic journey across the Everglades with Miccosukee educator and activist Betty Osceola. Interweaving Douglas’s writing\, personal narration\, present-day verité\, and archival footage\, RIVER OF GRASS reveals how this country’s origin story haunts and inextricably shapes contemporary American life\, while asking how we might weather coming storms better together. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSasha Wortzel is an award-winning filmmaker and interdisciplinary artist using video\, installation\, sculpture\, and sound to explore how past and present are inextricably linked through resonant spaces and their hauntings. Raised in Southwest Florida and based in New York\, Wortzel specifically attends to sites and stories systematically erased or ignored from these regions’ histories. RIVER OF GRASS (2025) is her first feature documentary. The film won the Pare Lorentz Award from IDA\, Hot Docs Joan VanDuzer Special Jury Prize – International Feature Documentary\, and Mead Audience Award\, among others. The film received institutional support from Sundance\, Ford Foundation\, Sandbox Films\, Knight Foundation\, Doc Society\, Field of Vision\, and Chicken & Egg Pictures.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Community Brunch\, an opportunity to sit together over food to celebrate each other. This event is for regular contributors and attenders of Sanctuary events as well as for folks who have never been to the Sanctuary.
