SUMMARY:"Notes Against the Threshold of Dreams" with Zevin Polzin
DESCRIPTION:Composer Zevin Polzin’s overnight concert\, Notes Against the Threshold of Dreams\, will be an exploration of the liminal zone between waking consciousness and dream. This process involves the sonification of states of consciousness into contrapuntal melodies that bend and warp over the course of sleep\, finally re-emerging as new melodies created by REM brainwaves. The audience is invited to bring blankets and pillows for falling asleep during the performance. In the morning\, participants share dreams with each other\, assisted by a dream facilitator Ione. \n\n\n\nPresented with the Deep Listening Institute.

SUMMARY:Joe Giardullo's Red Morocco
DESCRIPTION:Formed in 2005 Red Morocco is Joe Giardullo\, tenor/soprano sax; Bob Forbes\, bass; and Harvey Sorgen\, drums. This powerful band features Harvey Sorgen\, former longtime drummer with Hot Tuna. Joe and Harvey go back over 30 years together\, including a time based in Amsterdam\, Holland in the 1970s. Joe Giardullo is a free jazz reed player whose improvisations are microtonal\, a style of playing that features other notes than the twelve octaves used in most Western music. His music has been described as an insinuating sound collage. One reviewer described it as having “a dangerous\, poisonous beauty\,” and that’s where the name comes from–red morocco is the name of a poisonous plant!

SUMMARY:"The Camden 28\," Human Rights Watch Traveling Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:How far would you go to stop a war? Anthony Giacchino’s film The Camden 28\, tells what happened on August 22\, 1971\, when twenty-eight men and women in Camden\, New Jersey\, carried out a powerful act of civil disobedience against United States involvement in the Vietnam War. The group was part of a nonviolent antiwar movement popularly known as the “Catholic Left.” The documentary tells of the activists’ covert preparations\, government intrigue\, a government raid and arrest of the protesters\, and an ensuing legal battle which the late Supreme Court Justice William Brennan called “one of the great trials of the twentieth century.” Thirty-five years later\, key participants openly discuss their motives\, their fears\, and the tremendous personal costs of their actions. It is a story of resistance\, friendship\, and betrayal played out against the backdrop of one of the most turbulent periods in recent American history. Presented with the Department of the Arts at RPI and Women Against the War. Part of the Human Rights Watch Traveling Festival which will have screenings on November 14th\, 15th\, and 16th\, 2006.

SUMMARY:"Conversations on a Sunday Afternoon\," Human Rights Watch Traveling Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Composed of an artful blend of documentary and dramatic elements\, Khalo Matabane’s Conversations on a Sunday Afternoon (2005) is a revolutionary film for South Africa. It breaks from the hard-hitting historical dramas the country has turned out and charges right into the world of ideas from people in the streets. In the film\, the struggle for reconciliation is nudged aside to reveal a country coming to terms with its new status as a promised land. It asks several questions\, such as what does a richer African nation owe to its poorer neighbors\, how does political crisis shape personal identity\, and is the war over now? A selection from the Human Rights Watch Traveling Film Festival\, presented with The Department of the Arts at RPI\, and Women Against War. The Human Rights Watch Traveling Festival will have screenings on November 14th\, 15th\, and 16th\, 2006.

SUMMARY:"Men on the Edge: Fishermen's Diary\," Human Rights Watch Traveling Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:A documentary by Israeli filmmakers Avner Faingulernt and Macabit Abramzon Men on the Edge: Fishermen’s Diary (2005) is set on an isolated and abandoned beach at the border between Gaza and Israel. Here\, against all odds\, Israeli and Palestinian fishermen lived and fished together from 1999 to 2003. The Palestinians were teaching the Israelis ancient fishing techniques passed down from one generation to the next. In turn\, the Israelis\, by their presence\, were enabling the Palestinians to continue to fish in Israeli waters. The film intimately and beautifully documents these four crucial years in the lives of this eclectic group of men from warring cultures. These men are brought together by their shared work and the natural threats they face each day in the open sea. Ultimately\, the greatest obstacle the fishermen face is not the harshness of nature\, but the pressures of politics and the fighting surrounding their enclave. Part of the Human Rights Watch Traveling Festival which will have screenings on November 14th\, 15th\, and 16th\, 2006. \n\n\n\nThe Human Rights Watch Traveling Film Festival is presented with the Department of the Arts at RPI and Women Against War.

SUMMARY:"The Net" Premiere With Political Theorist Langdon Winner
DESCRIPTION:More of a film essay (of the type pioneered by Orson Welles and Chris Marker) than a standard documentary\, German filmmaker Lutz Dammbeck’s The Net: The Unabomber\, the LSD and the Internet 2003) begins with the typical format and structure of a nonfiction film\, and a single subject (the life and times of mail bomber Ted Kaczynski). From the thematic springboard\, Dammbeck branches out omniddirectionally segueing into a series of thematic riffs and variants on such marginally-related subjects as: the history of cyberspace\, terrorism\, utopian ideals\, LSD\, the Central Intelligence Agency\, and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1962) author Ken Kesey and his Merry Pranksters. The film will be followed by an audience Q&A led by Langdon Winner\, a unabomber scholar. He has authored Autonomous Technology (a study of the idea of technology-out-of-control in modern social thought)\, The Whale and The Reactor: A Search for Limits in an Age of High Technology and is the editor of Democracy in a Technological Society. Presented with the Department of Science and Technology Studies at RPI.

SUMMARY:"Independent America" Premiere with Author Michael Shuman
DESCRIPTION:The author of The Small-Mart Revolution and Going Local introduces a screening of a thought-provoking new documentary by Hanson Hosein\, Independent America: The Two Lane Search for Mom & Pop (2005)\, which uncovers the growing opposition to big box retail across the U.S. and the often desperate fight being waged by independent retailers to stay alive. Independent America is an entertaining account of the filmmakers’ expedition through 32 states as they look for an America unchained by corporate retail. Self-imposed road rules bar them from major highways and corporate retail—traveling on alternative roads\, the duo can only do business with Mom & Pop. Presented with Sustainable Hudson Valley\, Honest Weight Food Coop and the Capital District Community Loan Fund.
